The New PC That Made Me Rethink the Hobby + Memorabilia Cards vs Autographed Cards

We kick off with a tease for next week's show: a topic that surprised even me once I actually sat with it. I collect memorabilia cards. I love patches. I collect autograph memorabilia cards too. But I don't chase autograph only cards, and I'm not talking about vintage autos or in person signatures. I mean modern autograph sets and modern autograph singles. So why do patches pull me in, but autographs on their own usually don't? I think I finally figured it out. Next week, I'll lay out the theory and we'll talk it through with the guys. After that, we roll into show and tell, and it's a full spread. A meaningful gift from a viewer that lands right on a top want list item. A quick rip through a stack of early 2000s era hockey memorabilia that reminds you how fun and affordable the hobby can still be when you collect with your own lane in mind. Then we keep going with more pickups, a few modern slabs, a handful of personal favorites, and a couple of oddball additions that turned into a fun new little side quest. We wrap by checking in on a major auction watch and setting the table for next week's episode, where a big hobby conversation and a big result are both coming into focus. The conversation goes back to a simple truth: the hobby can be enjoyable at any price point, and if modern collecting is stressing you out, you're allowed to pivot and find a lane that actually fits you. Kyle flips the script and asks the question everyone hates: “What's your favorite card in your collection?” That leads to a real conversation about how cards aren't just cardboard. They carry stories, experiences, and personal meaning that has nothing to do with a price tag. You share a funny, oddly perfect moment from years ago when a hobby friend referred to his cards as “his babies,” and why that idea kind of works, even if it sounds ridiculous out loud. Kyle wraps with a strong closing message about the hobby being an ocean with room for every kind of collector, then he signs off to get home to the family. From there, the episode turns into a full-on reveal of a brand new personal collecting lane that you did not expect to fall into. What started as a quick walk through the West Coast Card Show turns into a long conversation with a specialist vendor, a deal you couldn't say no to, and a stack of pickups that feels like you're holding real history. You break down why this lane hits so hard for you, why it complements the way you already collect, and why it has you genuinely fired up to keep building it. And yes, during the reveal, a “Michael Jordan” comparison comes up in a way that will make sense the second you hear it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We're hundreds of episodes into Sleeping with Celebrities but we're just now getting a PBS voice on? I know. We're so sorry. But this will make up for it. The brilliant, engaging, and funny Simeon Lipman from Antiques Roadshow knows more about baseball cards and, actually, punk rock memorabilia than most people will ever know about anything. And his knowledge includes a whole lot of arcane data. Let him regale with tales of Jimmy Claxton and of Simeon's long quest to acquire that one Billy Ripken card. You know the one I'm talking about. Yes, baseball can be exciting, and, yes, punk rock even more so, but we promise you that the dulcet tones of Simeon Lipman (current PBS voice) and John Moe (former public radio voice) will zonk you out faster than a fastball to the head and with much less pain.Watch Antiques Roadshow online or on PBS. In this episode of the Powers Sports Memorabilia Show, we go inside one of our most memorable signings ever with Patriots legend Julian Edelman. Julian and I quickly connected over something bigger than football — we're both from the same area — and that shared background set the tone for a signing experience that was personal, detailed, and unforgettable.Julian was genuinely shocked when he saw that we had a pair of his game-used cleats. What made the moment even more special was how locked in he was on every single item he signed. For each card placed in front of him, Julian knew exactly what play it came from. Not the season. Not the game. The exact play. It was a masterclass in how deeply he remembers his career and respects the history behind the items collectors cherish. One of the wildest moments came when Julian picked up a helmet we believed might be game-used. Unsure if it was worn in a game or served as his backup, Julian did what only Julian Edelman would do — he tried it on. Watching him examine it, react to it, and get completely absorbed by the memory tied to that helmet was something you rarely get to see outside the locker room. This episode pulls back the curtain on what a true player-collector connection looks like and why game-used memorabilia carries meaning far beyond the autograph. If you collect, love football history, or appreciate the stories behind iconic moments, this is one you won't want to miss.https://powerssportsmemorabilia.com/

Episode 291 continues with Jeremy Lee and Joe Poirot are joined by Leighton Sheldon of Just Collect for a focused conversation on where the line sits between cards and memorabilia. They dig into what happens when card prices climb into serious money, whether collectors should pivot to memorabilia at certain price points, and how space, display, and personal taste factor into those decisions. From there the trio shifts into a long, honest discussion about sticker autographs, PSA 10 autograph grades, and whether grading the auto itself adds real value or just marketing noise. Topics in this segment include: • Leighton's main question: when your card budget hits its ceiling, do you start looking at memorabilia instead• Jeremy's “cards only” stance and why game used gloves made the cut when jerseys did not• Space, storage, and display issues that push some collectors away from big items and back to cards• Jackie Robinson examples: 1950 Bowman in different grades versus signed pieces and scorecards• How memorabilia can offer historically significant items at prices below top tier card grades• Why some collectors chase one key piece of memorabilia per player while others stay strictly cardboard• Sticker autos versus on card autos and why some collectors refuse stickers entirely• PSA 10 autograph grades on modern pack pulled autos and whether the extra premium is justified• Vintage signed cards, fading ink, ballpoint quirks, and when an autograph grade actually helps• The psychology of “10/10” labels, population reports, and how grading companies changed how autos are valued Sports Cards Live streams live on YouTube every Saturday night, and this audio comes from that live video show. Why do some autographs turn out bold and beautiful while others look rushed, streaky, or barely readable? In this episode of The Powers Sports Memorabilia Show, Matt breaks down the four core factors that determine autograph quality—essential knowledge for any collector or anyone sending items into private signings. You'll learn how the item itself impacts ink absorption, why certain materials like glossy photos, baseball leather, and stitched jersey numbers consistently deliver better results, and why mesh jerseys or dark basketballs can be a challenge even for experienced signers.Matt also dives into pen choice, from paint pens and Sharpies to Staedtlers, explaining how ink type, freshness, and tip size can make or break the signature. Next, you'll hear how signing speed affects legibility and why autographs from game-day or walk-by moments often look totally different from clean, controlled private signing signatures. Finally, we break down the often-overlooked issue of pressure—how too much or too little can cause flooding, streaking, or light, patchy lines depending on the surface.By the end of this episode, you'll know exactly how to choose the best item and the best pen to maximize your autograph quality—and avoid the common mistakes that lead to disappointing signatures.Perfect for collectors, fans, and anyone who wants to get the best possible results from their next signing. https://powerssportsmemorabilia.com/
