Tonight on Normal World, Dave Landau, 1/4 Black Garrett, and Angela dive into Russell Brand's charges, comparing them to the Jimmy Savile scandal, and question the timing of Brand's spiritual pivot and grifty recovery products. Bridget Phetasy's viral critique fuels a larger conversation on addiction, accountability, and the right's vulnerability to charismatic influencers. From Porky's and strip club buffets to OnlyFans economics, the team blends cultural commentary with absurd tangents. A horror movie pitch (Whack Shack), amulet skepticism, and a YouTuber's misguided visit to a reclusive tribe keep the chaos rolling. They wrap with Russell Brand reboot pitches, James Lipton trivia, and the unintended symbolism of diet soda diplomacy. In our first Share the Chair episode of 2025, we welcome talented jazz musician and educator, Tobi Stone. Tobi has played an important part of CH's own journey into jazz musicianship, and after almost a year's worth of planning (yes, really!), finally got the chance to sit down to talk all-things musical life journey - from Tobi discovering her passion for music at a young age; to knowing early on that she wanted to teach in addition to perform; to the key influences and experiences that have helped shape her career - including recovering from an early injury during her time studying jazz performance at the University of Washington. Tobi's uplifting approach to music education, and her ongoing efforts to support aspiring young musicians - especially female musicians - is all part of her goal to create an inclusive, empowering environment that blends the art of playing with the joy of teaching. Whether you're a jazz enthusiast, an aspiring musician, or simply curious about the life of a professional musical artist, this episode has a little bit of everything. Show Notes For those looking for more information on Tobi, you can visit her official Web site, Tobi Stone Music (tobistone.com). Some key highlights: Her full list of credits and in-depth biography can be found under the About Tobi section of her site. She has several key performances scheduled for the first part of 2025 that can be found under the Performances section of her site. A key callout performance will be May 9, 2025 at the Black Box Theatre in Olympia, Washington. It will be a tribute performance for one of her saxophone teachers, Bert Wilson. It is part of the Washington Center for Performance Arts Women In Jazz Series. The influential substitute teacher that inspired and influenced Tobi's early appreciation for the saxophone is professional saxophonist, Darren Motamedy. The non-profit Tobi has started that aims to elevate musicianship of under served communities is called Kindred Blue Notes. Additional information can be found on KindredBlueNotes.org. Tobi also is a long-standing faculty member of Seattle's Jazz Night School, where she teaches various combos and also offers private lessons. The technique Tobi referenced that is used as an alternative treatment to improve both voice and posture for people in the performing arts is called the Alexander Technique. 52 weeks. 52 episodes. One full year of being here in the podcast universe! To commemorate this special milestone, we did another in our Share the Chair series of episodes with CH's former senior marketing operations leader, Jen Phillips, who is currently the host of the The Progress Report Podcast. CH's heartfelt conversation delves into Jen's inspiring journey from professional burnout to personal rejuvenation, and how it ultimately led her to abandon her former sense of self (affectionately referred to in this episode as RoboJen - yes, as in robot), and find a new sense of purpose and well-being. Tune in for a great hour of discussion that delves into the importance of self-care, the impact of workplace culture on mental health, and the transformative power of taking time for oneself - three themes that have remained very important to us here as we navigate life ... one story at a time. Show Notes If you would like to check out Jen's podcast, The Podgress Report, you can find it where you get your podcasts. Jen's LinkedIn profile is here for those interested in learning more about her or connecting with her. The wellness resort Jen mentions is the Eupepsia Wellness Resort located in the state of Virginia in the United States. Nolo is one of Jen's new business adventures, a non-alcoholic bottle shop, located in Asheville, North Carolina in the United States. Visit their Instagram at @hey_nolo to check them out. The Jim Carrey quote Jen mentions is: "Something magical is going to happen. I don't know how it's going to happen. If there's no way in, a new way will be created." The first episode of season 2 is here!! This week we talk to actor and SKS alum Raymond Lee. He walks us through his entire career, from moving to LA, getting his SAG card, the importance of a strong actor community (which he found at SKS!), booking his first series regular role, working with Tom Cruise on Top Gun, and his incredible experience as the lead on Quantum Leap. There is so much amazing advice for actors in this episode and we are so excited to share it with you! WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO HEAR: 1:05 How Ray got his SAG card acting in a Verizon droid commercial 3:11 Acting in theatre in LA and what led him to create his clown troupe, Four Clowns, and the opportuniites that followed because of it. 7:46 Auditioning for TV roles in LA and the huge difference between theatre training and audition training. Discovering SKS and how it helped in train his audition muscle. “And it was so important at that time to learn how to audition, because auditioning is such a strength and a skill in and of itself. Once you're on set, it can feel a lot different. But it was important that we had to figure out how to audition, which is where SKS case came in.” 10:04 At SKS I took away the most important lesson of all, which is to stay positive, to stay hopeful 10:24: You don't rise to the occasion. You fall to the level of your training. 12:56 Demystifying the audition process in classes at SKS 15:46 You didn't come to LA to sit on the bench…… 18:19 Relocating to New York after being cast in the play Vietcong and how the role helped transform him into a true leading male actor. 19:47 How Colleen helped bring the leading man out of him during and audition coaching. 24:07 When actors say “I want to make this different”. It's already different – YOU make it different. Embrace what you bring to the role. 25:21 The process of auditioning and booking the Alan Ball show Here and Now. 30:01 How becoming a dad changed Ray and changed the types of roles he was playing. 34:23 Ray shares his epic audition story for Top Gun: Maverick. 40:09 Life lessons from Tom Cruise on set of Top Gun. “as an actor, you can never know enough. I can do everything now at my age, because I was interested in doing everything. You need to be good at everything, because you never know when you're going to use this stuff.” 44:05 INSIDE STAN KIRSCH STUDIOS SEGMENT (our ode to James Lipton) 48:17 How Ray took care of himself during the long hours of shooting Quantum Leap. 51:14 Colleen and Ray working together on Quantum Leap and how special it was to watch the first episode.
Today, I'm thrilled to announce the second part of Backstage Babble's 200th episode celebration—a conversation with two of my favorite former guests, two friends, two mentors, two veteran performers, two Tony nominees--Lee Roy Reams and Brandon Maggart. Tune in to hear some of the stories of their parallel lives in the theater, including what it was like sharing a dressing room during APPLAUSE, the difference between Lauren Bacall and Carol Channing, their unusual experience arriving in Oklahoma City with LORELEI, how Tamara Long influenced the cast of that show and what made Jule Styne decide to keep her in it, what it was like for Lee Roy to teach Madeline Kahn the humor of HELLO, DOLLY!, how Susan Stroman convinced Brandon not to quit MUSICAL CHAIRS, how Lee Roy almost directed a revival of ANNIE 2, and Brandon's run-in with Howard Keel during South Pacific. Plus, they talk about Ron Field, Karen Morrow, Oric Bovar, and Jane Powell, and both of them answer the James Lipton questionnaire! You won't want to miss this episode with two super talents and very special people.
We all have a purpose, but have we found it, yet? Do we even know how to find it? In another of our Share the Chair series of episodes, CH sits down with namesake friend, mentor, and former boss, Courtney Andriunas, to talk about the pursuit of one's true calling. Courtney shares how her long-standing love of Boston, Massachusetts and a bucket list desire to take a class at Harvard lead her to a transformative workshop during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Listen in as she discusses what it means to truly find one's individual sense of purpose, what inspiring and authentic leadership looks like in the workplace (hint: it should NOT be that different from how we are in our personal lives), and how her passion for creating a supportive and encouraging space for others remains one of her key tenets. This episode has you covered with wisdom and uplifting energy from not one but two Courtneys. Show Notes Courtney's LinkedIn profile is here for those interested in learning more about her or connecting to talk further about the workshop (note: you will need a LinkedIn account to see her full profile and be able to follow her). The workshop was through the Harvard Extension School. More information on the discussion CH and Courtney were having regarding different leadership styles as defined by distinct colors (e.g., Red, Yellow, Blue, Green) can be found on a number of Web sites and through various organizations. I tease Harry Duran about how we first connected, because it makes me feel good about my scrappiness as a podcaster. He wasn't mean, just way bigger than me - and he still is, we're just connected now, which I'm so grateful for!Harry's first podcast, Podcast Junkies just hit the 10 year mark recently, and I'm super grateful to have been a guest (see episode 332). If you remember the show Inside the Actor's Studio, with James Lipton, it's based on that, but for podcasters. There are so many podcasters, and everyone has a story --His 2nd podcast, Vertical Farming, is about just that, and has brought him all over the world. He talks to CEOs of companies in the field to learn more about practices and purpose, and they love the chance to be featured, and Harry loves learning. so it's a win win. He also has a group that he's guiding in podcasting called podcast Blueprint - Harry talks about it on his Fullcast website here: https://fullcast.co/Harry and his partner moved a few years ago to Minnesota from NYC, and he doesn't talk about it a lot, so I thought it would be fun to see how that transition has been - listen to the full episode here! In this final part of my interview with Hayley Krischer, journalist and author of the just-released “Where Are You, Echo Blue?”--the juiciest beach read of the year about a missing Hollywood starlet on the cusp of Y2K and the obsessed journalist determined to find here--we peek at what's coming around the bend for her and I get her answers to my fast five questions. ** This week's episodes are a replay. ** We talked about: - The incredible allure of hot tubs - How re-watching “The Actor's Studio with James Lipton” was a key part of her research process for “Where Are You, Echo Blue?” - What she learned from studying actors about getting in to the psychology of her characters - The Instagram influencer who's helping Hayley understand her perimenopausal body and learning how to take care of herself - Thinking ahead to when her youngest child is out of the house - A preview of both her YA novel that's coming out in 2025 (think Charles Manson meets Goop meets teenage girls) and the adult novel she's writing next - The 620-page novel Hayley read in four days because she couldn't put it down - The exact morning beverage that fuels Hayley, and the (dark) song that gets her fired up when she needs a kick in the pants Follow Hayley on Instagram and Threads @haylerkrischer Follow Hayley on TikTok @hayleykrischerauthor Hayley's website: hayleykrischer.net For full show notes with links to everything we discuss, plus bonus photos!, visit katehanley.substack.com. Welcome to a peak Behind The Curtain! Introducing "Parker", a house dancer I worked with for several years. I've wanted to do This episode of Behind The Curtain since the show's conception. Finally, I have a woman who worked as an Entertainer for several years, took what the Industry had to offer her, and capitalized on those opportunities to create the life she wanted! For listener's who have never worked in the Adult Night Club industry, you may not know that there is a stigma held to all of us who have worked in the Industry, therefore it is often difficult to find people willing to discuss their experiences. Even when you want to change careers and move on it can be difficult to find gainful employment with years of SCI (Strip Club industry) on your resume. Parker started as a cocktail server and ultimately became a weekly "house dancer" for several years. We discuss how she began in the industry and what her perceptions were coming in. Parker shares her experiences candidly from how she learned how to be successful, to traveling to other markets to dance, and how her upbringing led to her entering the Industry. What were her goals coming in? What were her fears/concerns? How did she figure out the right clientele for her? How did she navigate marriage, parenthood, and getting her nursing degree all while in the industry? She shares her views on what she liked and didn't like about the business. What did life look like when she left the Industry? How did she ween herself from the cash-rich work of being an entertainer? Parker also talks about being a travel nurse in New York City during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. How did that impact and change her life? All of this, and I put Parker on the HOT SEAT by asking the 10 questions made famous by Bernard Pivot and then James Lipton on Inside The Actors Studio with a twist!:) Learn more about your ad choices. Having retired from official Chief Marketing Officer duties after spending over 20 years in the C-Suite space, she joins CH this week to talk all things life journey and experience - from her beginnings in the United States Air Force, to her ascendence into executive marketing leadership, to her passion and advocacy for people and possibilities. It's a great hour of conversation covering both work/life insights and wisdoms from an executive leader who ALSO has a knack of leading through her own life. Actor. Painter. Businesswoman. All around creative spirit. In this very special Share the Chair episode, CH chats with one of her longtime inspirations, Ellie Cornell. Some might know Ellie from her portrayal of Rachel Carruthers in 'Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers' (it's our fave scary movie, what can we say.) But Ellie's artist journey has evolved to include her passion for painting. Join us as she reflects on her days as a working television and film actor (including being taken under Bill Murray's wing ... yes, that Bill Murray); her lifelong love of painting (and from her front porch, no less); connecting to Nantucket Island's spirit of place (we also share that sentiment); and, always finding a way to honor and stay true to one's creative callings (because, as she says, there is a place for all of us). Show Notes Ellie's full list of film, television and producing credits can be found on her IMDb profile. The theatre company she had previously been a part of is Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Massachusetts. She also has participated in productions put on by the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket located on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. Front Porch Studio is the online home of Ellie's paintings and home goods that are inspired by her long time affiliation and love of Nantucket. The book Ellie references that she reads daily is 'The Book of Awakening' by Mark Nepo. Those interested in learning more about Nantucket, Massachusetts can visit the town/county official Web site. The Nantucket lighthouses CH mentions are: Brant Point, Sankaty and Great Point (a.k.a. Nantucket Light). Young's Bicycle Shop is where CH rented both car and bike during her visits; she also stayed at Brant Point Courtyard. The Ship's Inn is the Bed & Breakfast establishment that Ellie was a part of for over 20 years. Our C17 version is our own take on these two famous questionnaires.
Warning: If you prefer to watch a film with a blank slate, don't listen to this episode if you haven't seen or read Killers of the Flower Moon. While it doesn't give away spoilers or information that isn't widely known, and the film itself will be a powerful discovery given the stunning directing, acting, and musical score, it does prepare you for an unforgettable experience with a crash course on the brutal history. Andrea and Terrell Starr of the essential Black Diplomats Podcast and Substack have been watching the rich offering of Best Picture Oscar contenders, and have a lot to say about Killers of the Flower Moon. While it was eclipsed by buzzier films like Oppenheimer and Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon is a monumental masterpiece that explains how America was founded and the forces we are up against today. No one should be surprised by Trump. Trumpism is what founded our country. Killers of the Flower Moon reminds us of the urgent importance and power of art. Befriending failure. Believing we are good enough. Holding space for ourselves. Just a few of the thoughtful themes that emerge from another special episode of our Share the Chair series as CH sits down with good friend, former colleague and former boss (yes, true), Nathan Waldvogel, to discuss Nathan's journey to becoming a yoga therapist. He shares his belief and vision on what he is trying to build as a practitioner, but also reflects on what it has helped him build within himself as he pursues a passion to help people discover the importance of a mind body connection as part of a journey to healing. (P.S. Cat lovers will appreciate the cat meows in the background of our conversation). Show Notes For those interested in learning more about Nathan, his practice of yoga therapy, or to book an appointment, you can visit his Web site: YogaHausNW.com. Information on some of the different styles of yoga, including the definition of yoga therapy, can be found on Nathan's Web site under the Yoga Styles section. Information on Reiki can be found via Wikipedia. (NOTE: This is purely an informational share for those unfamiliar; it is not something Nathan is a practitioner of.) James Lipton's Inside the Actor's Studio questionnaire, and the original Bernard Pivot/Marcel Proust versions that inspired it, can be found here. Our C17 version is our own take on these two famous questionnaires.

Introducing Steven Rosen, author of Tonechaser, a book about the late Edward Van Halen culled from interviews and experiences across their 25+ year friendship. Steven has written for Guitar Player, Guitar World and many other Rock publications. He has authored numerous books about rock legends Jeff Beck, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Black Sabbath, Free/Bad Company and Randy Rhoads. Here is PART 2 of our conversation. We begin PART 2 with the Sammy Hagar era. We discuss with Eddie's search for a new singer and his feelings about Sammy during the 'Honeymoon' period. What might have created the rift between Eddie & Sammy? What might be the reason for Eddie's drive and obsession with music to the detriment of his own health and relationships? Was Eddie able to achieve happiness in his life? What was the difference between Eddie the ROCKSTAR and Eddie the MAN? We delve into Van Halen III with Gary Cherone. How did Eddie feel about his 3rd singer and how did we deal with the crushing public rejection of the record and of Gary? We also discuss the loss of the friendship between Steven and Eddie. Who were some of the friends that Eddie had both in and out of the industry? I ask Steven some questions about Eddie from my lifelong friends Tom Lang & John Hardin. Steven gives us some great answers to these questions:) Buy TONECHASER! www.tonechaserbook.com And please leave a review!:) All of this, and of course, we put Steven on the HOT SEAT by asking the 10 questions made famous by Bernard Pivot and then James Lipton on Inside The Actors Studio with a twist!:) Learn more about your ad choices. Introducing Phoenix, AZ DJ Chris "Big Nasty" Allen! Today's interview brings us a cautionary and inspirational story about overcoming major ongoing medical issues! Chris tells us about how he broke several vertebrae in his neck, was temporarily a quadriplegic, and the many setbacks in his ongoing recovery process from spinal reconstruction surgery (Vertebraes, C3-C7), all through the COVID Pandemic till this very day! We also discuss how being a musician often leads to becoming a strip club DJ! And how being a one-man band singing and playing "porno blues" (a genre Chris created) led to an offer to DJ at his first strip club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. How did preaching influence Chris's style on the mic? His first club had a Juke Box for music selections and he learned how to Emcee by listening to the owner, Al (a former Pentecostal minister) 'preach' to the crowd. "The Sunday congregation at the first church of what's shakin' now!" The Naked Sermon! Can I get an AMEN?! Lol From there he DJ'd off of a 5-disc changer/CD player with a cassette deck attached to it (Google it youngsters! LOL), to professional CD players, to today's DJ programs while working in San Francisco, and ultimately settling in the Valley of the Sun, Phoenix, AZ! He overcame a meth addiction 17 years ago too! Special shout out to the P.A.N.D.A.s who have helped him with his addiction (Daniel Montoya), and mentored him on the craft of being a Strip Club DJ! Chris then reveals how he broke his neck and wrist (and all these years we've been told that masturbation makes you go blind!), and the many complications in his recovery due to poor treatment by medical personnel, health insurance intricacies, and just the sheer physical pain involved with such catastrophic injuries. "Big Nasty" shares invaluable information with all of us on how to be your own ADVOCATE while dealing with insurance and treatment centers. He gives us 2 KEY terminologies that will empower anyone going through similar major long-term medical recovery! KNOW your insurance coverage!!! KNOW who your 'charge nurse" is! Chris has had to relearn how to walk, use his hands, and really, every basic function we do on a day-to-day basis that we all take for granted! From bathing, and feeding himself to playing his beloved guitar! Truly a remarkable journey! All of this, and of course, we put Chris on the HOT SEAT by asking the 10 questions made famous by Bernard Pivot and then James Lipton on Inside The Actors Studio with a twist!:) Learn more about your ad choices. He's the DJ that all of the South Florida PANDAS (Professional Adult Nightclub DJ Association) raved about for years before I finally met him in 2015. Tristan is a 34-year veteran DJ who started his career at Thee Dollhouse and Fantasy Ranch in Tampa, Florida. Born in Minnesota and living his early years in Minnesota and North Dakota, Tristan spent his formative years in Louisiana and began his musical journey as a guitarist who loved 80's Metal like Ozzy Osbourne (Randy Rhoads specifically), Steve Vai, AC/DC, Stryper, and White Snake. Eventually, he discovered Florida Break Beats through a dancer he dated in Tampa, which kickstarted his love for DJing and Electronic Music in the 90s! He soon got an opportunity to be trained and start DJing/MCing at strip clubs and after-hours clubs! A truly genuine, hard-working, and insightful guy who understands how he got where he is and what his process does to allow him to remain on top! What is the common thread for so many Strip Club DJs in our 'origin stories'? What is Tristan's "Moving Target"? We talk about how long it takes to truly become excellent at DJing/MCing, and what are some of the nuances and keys to becoming a top Strip Club DJ! The need to constantly learn new techniques and technologies to hone your craft. DJing extra long shifts in Strip Clubs. Creating the best Work/Life/Family Balance! Tristan discusses his secret to becoming one of the best DJs in the business. How do you 'read a room'? Tristan also describes all of the amazing performers, musicians, aerialists ("Vixen's Angels") and guest DJs that Vixen's Cabaret employs to give their guests a unique and high-energy experience! And of course, we put Tristan on the HOT SEAT by asking the 10 questions made famous by Bernard Pivot and then James Lipton on Inside The Actors Studio with a twist!:) Learn more about your ad choices.
