A proper Grumpy Old Coaches Christmas Special with Simon Ward joined by Steve Lumley and Marc Laithwaite, plus Bethany Ward back in the hot seat(and, as ever, dropping a couple of absolute show-stoppers). We kick off with the state of triathlon participation and what Marc is seeing on the ground as an organiser, including the way athletes are now leaving entries later and how that makes it harder to predict numbers. From there we zoom out and compare triathlon to what's booming elsewhere, especially road running, open water swimming and cycling. Next up, we dig into why running is flying right now, particularly half marathons and marathons. We talk simplicity, cost, time commitment, and why formats like Parkrun, plus the rise of newer fitness events, are pulling people in. We also go properly into the youth pathway problem. Marc shares the TryKidz work in primary schools and why the missing piece is not enthusiasm or delivery, it's the “what next?” step after the taster day. Then we take on Ironman age group qualification. The principle seems fair, but the real-world experience can be confusing, with Beth mentioning a calculator tool a friend built to help make sense of it. And because it's Christmas, we finish with a proper 2025 debrief and 2026 goal setting session. Steve's return to long-distance racing at 60, Beth's Ironman Austria recap (including the WhatsApp group drama and a very honest observation about what people pay attention to), plus Simon's Bosphorus swim from Asia to Europe and why destination events just hit different. Then it's onto 2026 with Hyrox, ultras, swims, 70.3 plans, gravel adventures, and Beth trying to bundle unfinished 2025 business into one slightly chaotic solution involving a horse. Key takeaways Triathlon may have bottomed out, but recovery depends on costs, accessibility, and the on-ramp for newcomers. Road running's growth makes sense: low barrier, low faff, easy to fit around life. Destination events (point-to-point swims, iconic routes) create memories, not just results. Youth participation is fixable, but only if there's a clear next step after “try it” days. Ironman qualification can be fairer in theory, but the system has to be understandable and consistent to earn trust. Some memorable quotes “If you want anybody to care, you either win or you almost don't make it.” “Fitness is very specific, isn't it? You're fit for purpose.” “I started off with low expectations, and I was not disappointed.” Listener action steps If you're feeling stuck or bored, plan a destination event for 2026 (swim point-to-point, iconic route, a proper adventure). If triathlon feels like too much right now, there's no shame in leaning into a 70.3, open water swims, or running while life is busy. Coaches and clubs: if you're working with juniors, build a clear next step after “intro sessions” so kids have somewhere to go next. Have a brilliant Christmas, enjoy the food and the downtime, and don't try to “win Christmas” by smashing training when your body is begging for a breather. The Grumpy Old Coaches will be back next year, and the mission rolls on: 500 episodes first… then a million downloads. Steve Lumley is back in the market for athletes. You can contact Steve via his email, TriCoach.Lum@gmail.com Marc Laithwaite runs The Endurance Store, an independent running and triathlon store in West Lancashire, and Croston Cycles, just down the road from The Endurance Store! Epic Events organise swim, cycle, run, and triathlon events throughout the North West. Www.theendurancestore.com https://www.crostoncycles.com/ Www.epicevents.co.uk Marc also talked about his charity: TryKidz (triathlon introduction days in primary schools, NW England) Join the SWAT Inner Circle And if you want structure, accountability, and a tactical plan for staying strong, mobile, and resilient all year round, the SWAT Inner Circle is where you'll find the support to stay Battle Ready for life's adventures. Elizabeth Sheridan has developed a great love of ParkRun, and it has inspired travel all around the US and to many other parts of the world; currently ParkRun happens in 22 countries, and Elizabeth has done a ParkRun in every one of those countries, except Australia. If you aren't familiar with ParkRun, it's a free, weekly, timed 5k. No registration, no bib numbers. It's not even a race: some people run fast, some people jog, some people walk; there are dogs, kids, people pushing strollers—it's truly a come as you are event and complete the 5k however you like. You can learn more about ParkRun in the episode and by following the links below. One important thing to know about ParkRun is that it is as much about completing 5 kilometers as it is about community. The community aspect is ultimately what drew Elizabeth in to become as deeply involved in ParkRun as she is today. And it all really got going once Elizabeth had finished raising her five children. As she says, "they're grown and flown." Elizabeth tells the story of how she first got into running as a teen and how she got involved with ParkRun, and she tells the stories of some of her many adventures running ParkRuns all over the world, and here in the US, where she has been and continues to keep up with being US Countrywomen—meaning she does every ParkRun in the US. With ParkRun always growing and expanding, this is a quest that is ongoing. Be prepared to be delighted and inspired by Elizabeth's love and enthusiasm for the incredible and ever growing community that is ParkRun. In this powerful Kidney Warrior Story, host Dee sits down with Tony to unpack a decade-spanning journey through chronic kidney disease (CKD)—from a shock Stage 4 diagnosis of IgA Nephropathy (IgAN) to Stage 5 kidney failure, peritoneal dialysis (PD) with brutal drain pain, a transition to haemodialysis (HD), line infection and coma, the courage to self-needle with a fistula, and ultimately the life-changing gift of a kidney transplant. Tony shares the practical and emotional realities few hear about: choosing PD vs HD, APD (overnight machine) vs manual gravity bags, buttonhole vs rope-ladder needling, home haemodialysis training, fluid management, and rebuilding confidence after hospital trauma. He explains how movement and sport (from 5K Parkruns to half marathons) helped his mental health on dialysis—and how he kept going after FIVE “dry-run” transplant calls before finally receiving his match. Post-transplant, Tony competed at the Transplant Games (bronze in cycling!), then faced a sudden cycling accident with a broken talus—and still came back stronger with kidney function over 90%. Tony's message? You're not alone. With support, information, and small, consistent steps, more is possible than you think. WHAT YOU'LL HEAR • Early signs missed: high blood pressure and “white coat” assumptions • Stage 4 to Stage 5 CKD: understanding IgA Nephropathy and next steps • Peritoneal Dialysis (PD): APD vs gravity bags, real talk on drain pain • Haemodialysis (HD): line infection → coma, then fistula and self-needling • Buttonhole vs rope-ladder: how Tony overcame needle phobia • Home HD routine + exercising safely on dialysis (5K to half marathons) • Five transplant calls that didn't happen—coping tools that helped • The call that changed everything: consent, surgery, waking the kidney • Transplant Games success—and recovery after a serious cycling crash • Mental health: therapy, peer groups, and why talking saves lives • Practical tips: fluid limits, pacing activity, and building back slowly • Community resources: Kidney Care UK, young adult kidney groups KEY TAKEAWAYS • Movement is medicine—start with what you can manage (even 100 metres). • Your effort matters—even when decline happens, you may be delaying harm. • Build your circle: family, peers, clinicians, therapists, Kidney Care UK. • Advocacy counts: read clinic posters, join groups, ask questions. • Mindset + support = progress. Small daily actions add up. If you're newly diagnosed or supporting someone with CKD, browse our back catalogue for in-depth episodes on PD, HD, transplant prep, and mental health. There's marshal marshmallows, Danny goes honey nuts, a very niche once in a parkrun lifetime opportunity, we say hello to a new listener, a tactical Christmas wish, Nicola went west side to Moss Side at Alexandra parkrun in Manchester and Danny did 10-years straight at Riddlesdown parkrun in Croydon.
This episode introduces the unstoppable Karin Ridley—a mining logistics pro by day, trail adventurer by weekend, and proud member of the Delirious W.E.S.T. 2026 crew. Karin shares how her journey began with gastric sleeve surgery and a nudge from her mum to try Parkrun, which eventually catapulted her into the world of trail ultras. Her story is raw, hilarious, and deeply inspiring. From strength training with Susan Grover to finishing the 200-mile Delirious West solo in brutal WA heat (with no crew!), Karin walks us through the ups, downs, dirt naps, and shower stops that made her first Delirious unforgettable. And she's doing it all again—because once you've seen what's possible, you can't unsee it. We chat about the magic of Averley's running community, the life-changing power of volunteers and pacers (shoutout to Justin and Shannon), and what happens when you go from “I guess I'll try a 10K trail run” to conquering back-to-back 200-milers in a single year. Karin also shares what it's like training with a FIFO roster, navigating nutrition post-surgery, and fitting in runs with her husband Ben—her crew chief, best friend, and rock. Whether you're new to trails or dreaming of going long, Karin's story will remind you why we do this: for the adventure, the people, and the chance to find out what we're made of. ⸻ Why You'll Love This Episode: •From 145kg to 200-mile finisher—how she rebuilt her life and mindset •Trail running as therapy, community, and clarity •The emotional power of pacing and crewing in ultra events •Running post-gastric sleeve and the nutrition challenges that come with it •How strength training helped her conquer injury and stay race-ready •Her return to Delirious West in 2026—and why it's not just about the finish line ⸻ Next Big Adventures: ✔️ A brutally beautiful mountain half marathon in Spain ✔️ Six Inch (WA's trail runner Christmas party

No fireworks, just good ol' parkrun chat. Should every 50-milestones be a Thing? Have you seen Match of the Day? Are you a hugger or a handshaker? Plus both Nicola and Danny are too tired to tour far far away (Nic Nic at Lister Park parkrun parkrun and Danny at Queen Elizabeth parkrun parkrun). Sacreligious, we know.
Guten Tag! It's a German Unity Day special once again, where Danny went to the awesome Allerpark parkrun in Wolfsburg and the georgous Georgengarten parkrun in Hannover. There's naughty candidates, a permanent parkrun CEO announcement, Storm Amy impacts and much more in this week's episode. Not forgetting Nicola did a non-Thing at Lister Park, Bradford for her 750th parkrun.
First up, some chat about an embarrassing compliment that David received recently, a lovely Crunch Crunch Joe got at his recent Park Run and how to best to cook an omelette. Then the talk returns to Joe's wild camping plans. How are things progressing with the tent-buying, where is he going to do it and just how is he feeling about the whole idea now that he's had a chance to let it settle in? Early birds Nicola and Danny mostly stick to parkrun, with AI, wildlife attacks, Elvis festivals at Porthcawl parkrun, memory lane trips and parkrun Australia's main sponsor Medibank's number one tourist suggestion as just some of the topics. There's also some last minute 5k app and API access updates.
Nicola and Danny give some feminine cl-apps about the 5k app becoming parkrun official. Danny takes Jem up the Arsenal, there's a new **** blanket (aka dry robe), an intense mintense suspense story, and they both stayed local 'cause life.

Dolly or Bev? It's Bev! In fact both are standing in for Nic Nic this week. There's also an additional live audience of one. Hey there, and welcome to the weMove podcast! This week's episode is one for the tennis fans—and for anyone inspired to bring people together and build a thriving community. I'm in conversation with Prince Boucher, the founder of Mission Athletic Club in San Francisco. To me, this is a masterclass in creating a social sporting community that's organized, respectful, and uniquely individual.Whether you're passionate about tennis or dreaming of starting something in the racquet sports space, this episode is a must-listen. Prince and Mission Athletic Club have built something truly special, rooted in the fundamentals—like access to great free court infrastructure—but elevated by the way the community has been empowered to grow and shape the club.We dive into all things tennis, San Francisco, and the city's changing dynamics, including the jaw-dropping reality of what $100,000 means for the poverty line. From there, we explore the innovative way the club is run, the tech platform that keeps it all connected, and the incredible scale of this community, with games happening every day across the city. For our UK listeners, think ParkRun—except for tennis. It's that level of organization, but with a fresh, vibrant twist that only tennis can bring.I absolutely loved this conversation with Prince—thank you for your time and for sharing your journey with Mission. Wishing you continued success! As always, from Chris and me—peace ✌️.https://www.missionathletic.club/https://www.instagram.com/themissionathleticclub
Our favorite episodes involve answering listener questions in a "no secrets" style. That means we might be right, we might be wrong, but we'll always be honest (and hairy!).We started with a game theory analysis on how we think this year's Western States 100 will play out. This is the type of conversation that athletes have before every race, but they usually wouldn't play it out in public. We can check our work in 2 weeks! And then we broke down tons of great questions! Topics: what drives us, messages from our younger selves, The Feed's new high carb mix that is resetting the cost curves, responders and non-responders to passive heat, going for it at the back of the pack, diagnosing and improving offsets between climbing and flats, adding passive heat v. adding more training, whether you need heat training in the summer, a couple hypotheticals on road and track athletes coming to trails, a spicy hypothetical on Kilian Jornet, adding weight vest training, balancing competition with self-acceptance, sub-ultra v. ultra for making the sport more accessible, getting into coaching, and the popularity of Park Run in the UK v. the US.May your legs be carbed-up and may your hairs not be given names on a podcast.
