Show Notes Episode 406: Ladies and Gentlemen, Rock and Roll This week Host Dave Bledsoe attempts to convince a Gen Z bartender he was one of the original MTV VJs only to learn the bartender has never heard of MTV. (Is that like a Tik Tok thing?) On the show this week we take you back to the origins of the music video and the channel they created. (VH-1!) Along the way we discover that Dave wasn't there when MTV debuted because he was not allowed to up past his bedtime. (Things haven't changed really, he usually passed out around 7 PM.) Then we dive right into the long association of music and moving pictures, even when the moving pictures had no sound. Then we take on the long and winding road that leads to August of 1981 and the music video network that had very, very few music videos. (There were a LOT of Flock of Seagulls videos on repeat in the early days.) Finally we explain the incredible impact the genre of music videos themselves had on a generation and the music industry. (Turns out the record companies could make a lot of money showing half naked women dancing in front of a stage!) Our Sponsor this week is Dave TV the only all music video channel left on television, not affiliated with David Lee Roth and available in limited markets, mainly northern New Jersey. We open the show with the first few minutes of MTV and close with Lucy May Walker testifying in a brutal true crime story. Episode 372: Video Home System Killed the Betamax Star This week Host Dave Bledsoe gets all nostalgic with some old home videos only to discover something unspeakably horrible on a tape labeled “David's 12th Birthday” (Actual footage of his 12th birthday, god he was a fat little kid!) On the show this week we tell the tale of the most brutal conflict of the 1980's, the war between VHS and Beta (So…Much…Blood) Along the way we discover why Dave isn't allowed in any movie theaters anymore. (It would be better if it were a Pee Wee Herman thing) Then we dive right into the creation of home video, from its absurdly British beginnings to the mighty Titan that was Sony striding across the land. (Spoiler: Sony loses). Then we dig into General Curtis LeMay's porn preferences for reasons never truly explained, only to veer back on topic with the tale of two tape formats and the brief but bitter fight over which one would dominate the world. (It turns out to be the one that is slightly cheaper.) We wrap up with a delightful but completely irrelevant tangent on why people called Montgomery Ward department stores Monkey Ward. (Are there monkeys involved? You'll have to tune in to find out, or, you know, Google it.) Our Sponsor this week is Mondo Fast Eddie's Home Video, we got the tapes, you gotta have the machines. We open the show NEC's brand new video cassette machine and close with Lucy May Walker eulogizing the Radio Star. There are now more ways than ever for an artist to connect with audiences, and to make money doing it – exactly the kind of complex task that many artists look to a manager to help them with. So how do forward-thinking managers help artists connect with their audience, strike innovative deals, and make money in new ways? Joe Sparrow talks to three young managers who are all navigating this new landscape to find out what they have learned: • Sarah, Muise Management – who works with Shygirl, LYZZA, Butch, Lou Hayter & Delilah Holliday. • "T" Oyelola, Black Grape Global - who works with YolandDa Brown, Genevieve Dawson, Annastasia Baker. • Ben Price - Harbourside Music Management - works with Viktoria Modesta , Lachi and Lucy May Walker. Sarah, T and Ben are all members of Music Managers Forum's Accelerator Programme - an initiative they set up in 2019 with support from YouTube Music, Arts Council England and Creative Scotland, helping upcoming managers to become sustainable businesses. We've been speaking about the “third pillar” of income for artists for a while now: a substantial stream of income that sits alongside the traditional duo of live performance and recorded income, and is composed of a unique mix of income streams for every artist. For instance: an artist could make money from Twitch streams, a “super-fanclub” on Patreon, a closely-aligned and long-term brand partnership, or a podcast.
