MICHAEL JAI WHITE BIOA highly trained martial artist and actor, Michael Jai White has broken barriers as a Hollywood star and international box office sensation. With his dynamic personality, agile abilities and a physique of a bodybuilder, Michael has earned respect for his versatile talents both on and off screen.Born November 10th in Brooklyn, New York, it was after watching the movie Five Fingers of Death, Michael's interest in the martial arts began. At the tender age seven, Michael started taking weekly Japanese Jujitsu classes to stay focused while growing up on the tough streets of Brooklyn. By age eight, Michael's family relocated to Bridgeport, Connecticut where he studied the Shotokan and Kyokushin forms of karate and earned his first black belt by age 13. Upton graduating from Bridgeport's Central High School, Michael went on to further his education, first attending Southern Connecticut and then UConn. While winning multiple championships as a national martial arts competitor, Michael became a Special Education teacher at Wilbur Cross Elementary School in Bridgeport.Bitten by the acting bug in college, while teaching, Michael began auditioning for commercials and acting gigs on weekends and summer breaks. Michael landed the lead role of Tom Robinson in the first Off-Broadway adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird, starring opposite Tony Award Winner George Grizzard. Shortly after, Michael began landing jobs in commercials and guest starring roles on television shows and films; he eventually left teaching and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career full-time.Before long, Michael would go on to guest star on such hit television shows as Saved by the Bell, Martin, NYPT Bue, and CSI. Proving his acting ability, Michael would soon be cast for the lead role of legendary boxer Mike Tyson in the HBO biopic Tyson which solidified his legitimacy as a dramatic actor in Hollywood.Michael was then cast to play the title character in the movie Spawn which came with the distinction of being the first black superhero in a major motion picture. As white cemented his Hollywood status as a bonafide action star, more diverse roles emerged that allowed him to showcase his physical prowess as well as display his on-screen charisma and comedic ability in such films as Exit Wounds, Undisputed 2, Silver Hawk, Blood & Bone, Black Dynamite and Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married and Why Did I Get Married Too playing opposite Tasha Smith. The two would ignite such on-screen chemistry, they would go on to start together in the long running OWN Network series, For Better or Worse.Having proven himself as an actor, White would make his directorial debut with the action film Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown, in which he also starred. Based on the cult film Black Dynamite which White created and starred, he would go on to write and produce the hit animated television series bearing the same name. He would also win over audiences in a string of films, including Chain of Command, Chocolate City, Skin Trade, and Falcon Rising. He also guest stars in the recurring role of Ben Turner / Bronze Tiger on The CW hit series Arrow. He is currently directing and starring in Sony Pictures third install, Never Back Down 3: No Surrender, and will also reprise his role as Princeton in the upcoming Chocolate City 2.As a martial artist, in 2013 Michael achieved his 8th black belt from mentor and legendary undefeated kick-boxing champion, Bill "Superfood" Wallace and was honored by Black Belt Magazine as their 2014 Man of the Year. Continuing the legacy of such greats as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme, Michael is now the #1 martial arts action star in in America. Michael Jai White resides in Los Angeles with his wife, actress Gillian White and their three daughters ABOUT OSCAR SHAW, AVAILABLE NOW ON DIGITAL AND ON DEMANDAfter retiring from the police force, a relentless detective haunted by the tragic loss of his closest friend sets out on a perilous quest for vengeance, seeking redemption and fighting to restore justice to the streets he once swore to protect. Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMlCJQ2SefU Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.Subscribe now at YouTube.com/@RefocusedNetworkThank you for your time.
With increasing severe weather events, we are seeing landslides happen around the country. Dr. Tom Robinson is a senior lecturer in Disaster Risk and Resilience at University of Canterbury. He spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
Tonight, on The Panel, Wallace Chapman is joined by panellists Sarah Perrim-Lampp and Michael Moynahan. First up, misinformation has been circulating online about the safety of the Mount Maunganui landslide and how preventable this disaster was. But is it actually possible to guarantee safety from these events? The Panel talks to Dr Tom Robinson, a senior lecturer in disaster risk and resilience at the University of Canterbury. Then, is it time to call time on the school uniform? Journalist Gamaliel Ramos Oliver reckons so. He says uniforms are expensive and wants them gone.
Landslide experts say it was a matter of when, not if, the slope overlooking the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park failed. Speculation has swirled online about the slip, where the recovery of the six people missing could still take weeks. Canterbury University's Tom Robinson says the slip was going to happen regardless if trees had been removed from the mountain. Emergency Management Minister Mark Mitchell told Mike Hosking misinformation doesn't help the mental health of those impacted by the disaster. He says they have to do an inquiry, but they don't want to force more mental health issues. Labour agrees there's a need to do an inquiry, with Ginny Andersen telling Hosking it's important people are able to get the answers they need. The recovery operation at the Mt Maunganui landslide continues with police warning it could take days or even weeks. Tauranga City Council has launched an investigation into what happened in the run-up to the deadly landslide. Already questions are being asked about who knew what, and when. We'll talk to University of Canterbury senior lecturer in disaster risk and resilience, Dr Tom Robinson about the danger of landslides after severe weather events. Also, NZ Herald senior investigative reporter Michael Morrah has been in Mount Maunganui for several days, and joins us on The Front Page. Follow The Front Page on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. You can read more about this and other stories in the New Zealand Herald, online at nzherald.co.nz, or tune in to news bulletins across the NZME network. Before the weekend, questions were already being asked as to why the campground at Mt Maunganui wasn't evacuated before last week's devastating landslide. That will be one of the things looked into as part of this independent investigation the local council is initiating. There will be all sorts of questions and, hopefully, a lot of answers. But there is one thing we know for sure already. We don't need an investigation to tell us that what happened on Thursday is a wake-up call for all of us. As tragic as it is, it is a wake-up call. But will we learn from it? I'd like to think so. But, based on history, I'm not so sure. Because I was very surprised to find out over the weekend that, historically in New Zealand, landslides have been more deadly than earthquakes. Tom Robinson is a senior lecturer in disaster risk and resilience at the University of Canterbury, and he was saying at the weekend that landslides have claimed more lives than all of our earthquake disasters. That landslides are our most deadly hazard. I had no idea. Which tells me how little we have learned from previous landslides. And, even though we're all gutted by what's happened at Mt Maunganui, chances are we'll all move on. We'll keep doing things like removing trees from hillsides - something that people in the Mt Maunganui area are already making noises about. We'll have this council review and we'll hear that, yes, perhaps the early warnings raised by locals on Thursday morning should have been acted on sooner. But that will be about it. I remember growing up in Dunedin when the Abbotsford landslide happened. It was 8 August 1979. That was major. More than 60 houses lost. 600 people evacuated. Thankfully, no fatalities or major injuries. The Abbotsford landslide happened after people in the area had been saying for years that there were signs of land movement. Cracks on people's properties - inside and out. And then, on the night of 8 August, away it went. That was 46 years ago. So, if we didn't learn anything from that experience, what hope that we'll learn anything from this? Or more to the point, what hope that - whatever we learn - leads to the kind of change and accountability needed to, at the very least, limit the chances of it happening again? In this episode of Hiring to Firing, hosts Tracey Diamond and Emily Schifter revisit Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird to unpack what corporate governance means for today's workplace. Joined by Richard Gerakitis, senior advisor at the YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta and former Troutman Pepper partner, they explore how boards, committees, and leadership set the tone through accountability, transparency, and integrity. Using Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley as examples, they examine how bias can undermine even the best‑designed systems and when "moral discretion" might justify bending the rules to protect the vulnerable. The conversation also touches on emerging issues, such as AI oversight, and the critical role HR plays in culture, compliance, and risk management. Tune in for practical insights on how thoughtful governance can turn ethical challenges into opportunities for trust and long‑term stability.Troutman Pepper Locke's Labor + Employment Practice Group provides comprehensive thought leadership through various channels. We regularly issue advisories that offer timely insights into the evolving employment law landscape, and maintain the HiringToFiring.Law Blog, a resource spotlighting best practices for employers. Ethereal Encounters Unveiled welcomes Mark Christopher Lee February 20th, 2025 Topic:Are Aliens A Part of God's Creation? Investigative Film Maker Mark Christopher Lee Born - not so recently in a Northern mill town where he studied Classical music at the renowned Huddersfield School of Music - eventually escaped to the glorious south of England and found solace in indie pop and after a short stint with morose Scots band The Jesus And Mary Chain he formed his band The Pocket Gods in 1998. Some 25 years later, and 76 albums and 5,000 songs later, the band has gone from playing gigs to a couple of dogs and a piano tuner to obtaining 10 Guinness World Records millions of streams, bringing real change to a broken music industry. High-profile champions along the way have been John Peel, the legendary BBC Radio 1 D.J. who loved their track Ballad Of The Peshwari Naan, and more recently Tom Robinson of 2,4,6,8 Motorway fame. His campaign for fair royalties from Spotify led to them changing their playlist rules to allow 30-second tracks on them and also led to them increasing their subscription rates, which hopefully will be passed on to artists. He has also given evidence to the U.K. parliament in their investigation into the economics of music streaming. He has been interviewed by the Wall Street Journal, Fox News, BBC World News, BBC 5 Live, TalkTV, ITV, London Live, The Independent, The Times, and many more. He decided to start making films in 2019 to tell the story of his band and then to make T.V. so that he could explore his love of UFOs and the paranormal. Check out Mark's world-first album, 100X30, which featured 100 songs all 30 seconds long—this led to the first of many Guinness World Records.

In this episode of Status Check with Spivey, Anna Hicks-Jaco speaks with three Spivey consultants—Tom Robinson, former Harvard Law Director of Admissions; Sir Williams, former Wisconsin Law Director of Admissions; and Anne Dutia, former Michigan Law Assistant Director of Admissions—about the relatively new category of law school admissions essays that we're calling "experience/perspective essays" or "E/P essays," many of which are variations on the essays previously known as "diversity statements." They walk through the specifics of what these essays can look like (going through several example prompts), how to approach those different prompts, common mistakes applicants make with these statements, traits of outstanding E/P essays, and more. This episode is part of an ongoing deep dive series on the main components of the law school application. You can listen to our episode on personal statements here and our episode on resumes here. “I thought Dave Davies of the Kinks was a girl. When I discovered he was a boy, that's when I got interested.” Jon's an old friend of the podcast and the author of some highly regarded and influential books about pop and its repercussions, ‘England's Dreaming' and ‘1966: the Year The Decade Exploded' among them. His latest is ‘The Secret Public: How LGBTQ Performers Shaped Popular Culture 1955-1979' which looks at five particular moments and the pivotal people in the mix at the time. We couldn't recommend it more highly and cover seven decades in this conversation, stopping off at … … how “homosexuality was a career-killer” until Bowie's spectacular Melody Maker interview in 1972. … new male identities - Valentino, Nureyev, Sinatra and the “subversive” stage act of Johnnie Ray. … does pop drive change or reflect it? … Andrew Loog Oldham, Kit Lambert, Simon Napier-Bell and the supposed “gay managers mafia” and how Oldham used camp as a weapon. … Dusty Springfield and the Gateway Club. … how Brian Epstein invented a new type of manager. ... Andy Warhol at the Factory, pop art, the launch of the Velvet Underground and his jukebox time-capsule of ‘60s gay pop taste. … was Tom Robinson the first out gay British pop star? … Mary Whitehouse v the Gay Times. … the Clash (“hurt, vulnerable boys”), Siouxsie, Poly Styrene, the Slits, Vic Godard and punk's other new stage identities.
