Am Donnerstag hat die Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft der Männer begonnen, die in den USA, Mexiko und Kanada ausgetragen wird. Insbesondere das Gastgeberland USA sorgt für politische Verstimmung. Zum ersten Mal findet die WM in einem Land statt, das zur gleichen Zeit gegen ein anderes Teilnehmerland Krieg führt. Zum ersten Mal auch sind ganze nationale Fangruppen von der Einreise zu WM-Spielen ausgeschlossen, etwa Fans aus Iran oder Haiti. Und zum ersten Mal ist schon vor dem ersten Anpfiff ein von der FIFA bestellter Schiedsrichter, Omar Artan aus Somalia, trotz gültigen Visums am Einreiseflughafen abgewiesen worden. Nach Russland 2018 und Katar 2022 ist es das dritte Mal in Folge, dass die politische Lage im Gastgeberland der Weltmeisterschaft die Diskussionen vor Beginn der Spiele stärker bestimmt als alles Sportliche. Und auch den USA unter Donald Trump darf der Versuch unterstellt werden, die WM zum sogenannten "Sportswashing" zu benutzen, also das Ereignis zu instrumentalisieren, um das Image des eigenen Landes aufzupolieren. Bislang scheint das nicht wirklich zu gelingen. Angst vor Repression der Ausländerbehörde ICE und die vollkommen überhöhten Ticketpreise haben dafür gesorgt, dass die Hotel- und Gastrobranche in den USA von enttäuschten Erwartungen berichtet. Präsident Trump nimmt nicht einmal am Eröffnungsspiel der US-Nationalmannschaft gegen Paraguay teil und feiert stattdessen am Wochenende seinen 80. Geburtstag mit Käfigkämpfen vor dem Weißen Haus. Wie umgehen mit dieser WM, die sportliche Superlative bietet, weil zum ersten Mal 48 statt 32 Mannschaften teilnehmen? Und ist diese Größe eigentlich gut, weil auch die Kleinen zum Zug kommen, oder reine Geld- und Machtgier des FIFA-Chefs Gianni Infantino, der damit seine Herrscherposition festigt? Wie politisch muss Sportberichterstattung in diesen Zeiten sein? Was verspricht sich eigentlich Mexiko von der WM? Und kann der Fußball dafür sorgen, dass sich in Deutschland für ein paar Wochen die allgemeine Laune ein wenig bessert? That's a wrap on Season 6. While the middle of the season felt a bit uneventful, we did witness some memorable moments.
