While humans were leaving the Stone Age and entering the Bronze, some Bristlecone pine trees grew from seeds to sprouts. They've been growing ever since. These 5,000-year-old pines are among the oldest organisms on Earth. Superlatives are also appropriate for the towering redwoods. Trees are amazing in many ways. They provide us with timber and cool us with shade, they sequester carbon and release oxygen, and are home to countless species. But they are also marvels of evolutionary adaptation. We consider the beauty and diversity of trees, and learn why their future is intertwined with ours. Guests: Kevin Dixon - Naturalist at The East Bay Regional Park District, Oakland, California Daniel Lewis - Environmental historian and senior curator for the History of Science and Technology at the Huntington Library, art museum and botanical gardens in Pasadena, California, professor of the natural sciences and the environment at Caltech, and author of “Twelve Trees: The Deep Roots of our Future” Featuring music by Dewey Dellay and Jun Miyake Originally aired January 25, 2025 Big Picture Science is part of the Airwave Media podcast network. Please contact advertising@airwavemedia.com to inquire about advertising on Big Picture Science. In a truly special episode of Superlative, host and aBlogtoWatch founder Ariel Adams sits down with legendary comedian, television host, and renowned car collector Jay Leno for an in-depth conversation that bridges the worlds of horology, engineering, and cultural influence. Recorded inside Jay Leno's Garage, this episode explores Jay's lifelong fascination with mechanical objects, from vintage automobiles and Ford Model T's to precision watchmaking, as he shares how curiosity, craftsmanship, and hands-on involvement have shaped both his collections and his career. Jay reflects on his personal watch journey, from early pocket watches and Seiko to Jaeger-LeCoultre, Rolex, and A. Lange & Söhne, while offering thoughtful perspectives on why mechanical watches continue to matter in a world of modern technology. Along the way, the conversation touches on the parallels between cars and watches, the importance of understanding how things work, the role of collectors in preserving traditional crafts, and why true appreciation often comes from direct experience rather than status alone. With humor, insight, and rare behind-the-scenes stories, this episode stands out as a memorable and meaningful discussion with one of the most recognizable figures in entertainment, making it a must-listen for watch enthusiasts, car lovers, and anyone fascinated by the intersection of passion and precision.Stay updated with Jay and Jay Leno's Garage:- https://www.lenosgarage.com/ - https://www.instagram.com/nbcjayleno/ - https://www.instagram.com/jaylenosgarage/ - https://www.youtube.com/@jaylenosgarage SUPERLATIVE IS NOW ON YOUTUBE! This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the team asks the only question that matters: “Are we Hublot or are we dancer”? What begins as a discussion of Cloud Dancer color palettes quickly becomes a full identity audit for one of the boldest brands in the industry, complete with Rick's Big Bang Convergence Theory making yet another appearance. From winter editions shown in Dubai to snowflake rotors and unexpected design choices, the crew explores why Hublot watches are always equal parts fascination and confusion. The conversation then shifts into true science fair territory as Ripley breaks down the newest Breguet experiment. Magnets, floating components, frictionless escapements, and a price tag that inspires Rick to call it a three-hundred-thousand-pound desk toy all take center stage. Ariel and David weigh in on the technology, the servicing challenges, and whether innovation still matters when the dial is nearly impossible to read. Finally, the group dives into one of the most unintentionally funny watches of the week, which sparks the unforgettable “forget my birthday pocket watch” debate. Between confusing apertures, mismatched layouts, and jump hour windows that practically require a translator, the team reflects on what makes a watch thoughtful versus what makes it feel like a last-minute gift. This week's episode begins with a hearty round of “clappage” for a €1,500 Omega dial book that looks like it was assembled during mandatory arts and crafts time, with hand glued pages, candlelit workshops, and enough fumes to convince someone this was a good idea, sparking what becomes the Watch Chime Anti Climax saga as the guys marvel at how brands keep uninventing printing and romanticizing hand binding as if the entire history of modern machines never happened. That sends everyone straight into “Planet Ocean Blue Gate”, where Omega's new Planet Ocean looks wildly blue in every promotional image yet is not blue at all, causing David to question reality, Ariel to ask why the images tell lies, Ripley to declare that they blew it themselves, and Rick to desperately try and fail to summon an Omega customer service advisor like he is attempting contact with the spirit realm. From the wide lugs to the disappearing helium escape valve to center links polished so perfectly you can literally watch your own disappointment reflected back at you, the team analyzes every confusing detail before wandering into a discussion about bullying a watch AI, especially once Ariel introduces the completely radioactive looking G Shock that feels like something an AI would choose to wear specifically to unsettle humans. They wrap with praise for Dubai Watch Week and Ariel's recounting of a brilliant HBO watch cameo featuring a fake Submariner and even faker watch guy dialogue, sealing this episode as a perfect mix of misleading marketing, glossy regret, chime-related frustration, and the ongoing psychological torment of any artificial intelligence unfortunate enough to wade into the world of watches.Check out this week's sponsor: Movado- https://www.movado.com/To check out the ABTW Shop where you can see our products inspired by our love of Horology:- Shop ABTW - https://store.ablogtowatch.com/To keep updated with everything Superlative, aBlogtoWatch Weekly, and aBlogtoWatch, check us out on:- Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ablogtowatch/- Website - https://www.ablogtowatch.com/- Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/aBlogtoWatch If you enjoy the show please Subscribe, Rate, and Review!

Andy's off somewhere being Andy, so Rachel Entreken steps in to co-host alongside Dom for an episode that somehow manages to be both deeply philosophical and entirely unhinged. First up, Dom and Rachel power through the definitive list of ultrarunning superlatives, covering everything from best hair (Rajpal Pannu and Tim Tollefson, obviously) to who's secretly working for the government. It's chaotic, it's festive, it's mile 90 of 2025 and they're just trying to get to the finish.    Then, Kilian Korth, (not that Kilian), the American one who grew up in England, dresses like an ultrarunning Ken doll, and almost became a politician before realizing he didn't hate himself enough for the job. He talks green jeans, Barbie Halloween costumes, and the glamorous realities of ruining your pants mid-race.

Beyond the Story Hearts Talk Podcast, Ciara M. Clark delves into the SMC way—Soulful, Mindful, and Continuous—encouraging listeners to break free from limiting beliefs and embrace their highest potential.Main Content:1. **Understanding the SMC Way** Sierra introduces the SMC way as a framework for personal growth. She emphasises that S stands for Soulful, M for Mindful, and C for Continuous. This approach encourages individuals to continuously engage with their inner selves, allowing for personal transformation. She notes, "This is a continuum of bursting ourselves off and getting ourselves back up again."2. **The Concept of Superlative-ness** Exploring the term "superlative," Ciara defines it as being in our highest form. She shares how understanding this concept shifted her narrative, reminding listeners that no matter their circumstances, they remain their superlative selves. She states, "When you realize that you are your highest degree in your highest form, no matter what happens, you are still your superlative self."3. **Breaking Predated Narratives** A significant portion of the discussion revolves around the impact of predicated narratives—beliefs shaped by our upbringing, society, and self-doubt. Ciara urges listeners to recognize and challenge these limiting beliefs, sharing personal anecdotes that highlight her journey of overcoming self-doubt and negativity. "We find ourselves believing in predated narratives about ourselves, which leads to self-hate and stinky thinking," she explains.4. **The Black Friday Investment Series** As the episode wraps up a special series, Sierra emphasises shifting the focus from consumerism to self-investment. She introduces the acronym BLACK, which stands for Break cycles, Learn yourself, Align your story, Choose conscious connections, and Keep blooming. Each component encourages listeners to take actionable steps toward personal growth, transforming their narratives from victimhood to empowerment.5. **Historical Context and Resilience** Ciara discusses the importance of understanding our history as a foundation for growth. Drawing on her personal experiences and cultural narratives, she highlights the resilience of the Black community, emphasising that despite obstacles, the ability to rebuild and innovate remains strong. "No matter how many obstacles Black communities have faced, we always can rebuild, re-innovate, restore, and re-imagine," she asserts. Conclusion: The episode serves as a powerful reminder that we all have the capacity to transcend our limiting beliefs and embrace our true selves. By breaking free from predated narratives and investing in ourselves, we can cultivate a life that reflects our highest potential. As Ciara beautifully states, "You are fully capable of blooming from what you have gone through."Key Takeaways: - Embrace the SMC way: Soulful, Mindful, and Continuous.- Recognise and challenge predicated narratives that limit your potential.- Focus on self-investment rather than consumerism, especially during times like Black Friday.- Understand your history to inform your future and cultivate resilience.#personalgrowth, #selfimprovement #podcasthighlights, #resilience #selfdiscovery #empowerment #breakingnarratives #BlackFridayinvestment #SMCway, #superlativeself.

In this episode of Superlative, host Ariel Adams, Founder of aBlogtoWatch, sits down with Felix Wallner, CEO of Hanhart, for a wide ranging conversation that explores the deep heritage, technical ingenuity, and modern evolution of one of Germany's most storied watch manufacturers. Felix discusses Hanhart's origins in the Black Forest and its longstanding ties to Swiss horology, the company's early breakthroughs in accessible mechanical stopwatches, and the military specification chronographs that later defined the brand's identity. He explains how Hanhart maintained its leadership in mechanical stopwatch production even as the rest of the industry moved toward wristwatches, and why the company continues to manufacture more than ninety percent of its stopwatch components in house today. Ariel and Felix also examine the modern landscape of German watchmaking, Hanhart's product first philosophy, and the engineering driven mindset that shapes everything from movement regulation to hardened HD12 steel, anti magnetic construction, and mono pusher modifications. The conversation reveals how a small authenticity focused brand balances heritage with innovation, how customer interaction directly informs product refinement, and how Hanhart preserves its identity in a competitive market without compromising on integrity or craftsmanship. Whether exploring the technical complexities behind mechanical timing instruments or the cultural nuances of German tool watch design, this episode offers a thoughtful and comprehensive look at what makes Hanhart a unique force within the industry.Check out Hanhart watches:- Website: https://www.hanhart.com/ - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hanhart_watches/ SUPERLATIVE IS NOW ON YOUTUBE!
