Doug Busk brings a builder's perspective to marketing transformation based on a career that spans global brand product marketing, higher ed, and political organizing. Currently, he's advising Google on their brand social media approach.  While leading marketing at Emory, Doug multiplied the university's share of voice via social through the first phase of the pandemic --- catapulting it from 12th to 1st among topcompetitors. At Coca-Cola, he created and implemented the company's first global approach to social. The “Hub Network” included a 20-person headquarters team serving over 2,000 brand marketers worldwide. Subsequently, Doug led Coke's corporate brand marketing efforts. “Coca-Cola Journey” empowered communicators in over 100 countries to drive data-drive storytelling about the company on owned sites and social. Doug previously created and built the landmark mobile organizing efforts of the 2008 Obama presidential campaign.

What really separates emancipatory thinking from its opposite? The prevailing Left defines itself against neoliberalism, conservative traditionalism, and fascism as a matter of course. The philosophical differences, however, may be more apparent than real.  The Right-Wing Mirror of Critical Theory: Studies of Schmitt, Oakeshott, Hayek, Strauss, and Rand (Rowman & Littlefield, 2023) argues that dominant trends in critical and radical theory inadvertently reproduce the cardinal tenets of the twentieth century's most influential right-wing philosophers. It finds the rejection of foundationalism, rationalism, economic planning, and vanguardism mirrored in the work of Schmitt, Oakeshott, Hayek, and Strauss. If it is to be more than merely an inverted image of the Right, critical theory must reevaluate its relationship to what Julius Nyerere once called “deliberate design” in politics. In the era of anthropogenic climate change, a substantial—not merely nominal—departure from right-wing talking points is all the more necessary and momentous. He's fast, feisty, and could play Quidditch. Meet the bat that won a beauty contest

A winged creature from Oregon was crowned this year's winner in an annual bat beauty contest put on by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). On Halloween, which was also the last day of International Bat Week, a hoary bat with a feisty personality named "Hoary Potter" defeated "Lestat," the western small-footed bat from Idaho, in the final round of the contest. It also bested a Townsend's big-eared bat named "Sir Flaps-A-Lot" from Utah, among others. The victory marks the third year in a row that a bat from Oregon has taken first place in the contest. Last year, "William ShakespEAR," a female Townsend's big-eared bat from southern Oregon took the title. In 2022, a canyon bat named "Barbara" also from southern Oregon was declared the winner. The federal agency has held the competition since 2019 to raise awareness about the animal's ecological importance. The bats are part of wild populations living on public lands, and are photographed by agency staff. BLM posted the photos on its Facebook and Instagram accounts, and asked people to vote for the cutest one. Hoary bats are known for swift flight and wrapping themselves in their own tails to mimic leaves and to hide from predators, the agency said. Because of this attribute, it estimated Hoary Potter would be "the perfect candidate for seeker on this year's Quidditch team," referring to the game in Harry Potter that is played on flying brooms. Emma Busk, the BLM wildlife technician who photographed Hoary Potter, said bats play a key role in the environment by eating insects and pollinating flowers and fruits. But they're increasingly facing the threats of habitat loss, disease and light pollution, and are often misunderstood as scary disease carriers, she said. "Less than 1% of all bat populations actually carry rabies, and the bat-to-human disease transmission is actually really low," she said. Busk said she hopes the event inspires more love for the only flying mammal. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

The weeklong Bureau of Land Management’s annual Bat Beauty Contest closes, appropriately enough, on Halloween this year. Voting has taken place on the BLM’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. The competition features photos of bats taken primarily by government biologists who survey and work with bats on public lands in 12 western states, including Oregon. There are 15 species of bats native to Oregon, including eight whose numbers are declining or at-risk, according to the state’s wildlife agency.  Bats from Oregon have won the contest for two years in a row. Last year’s winner was a Townsend’s big-eared bat photographed by Emma Busk, a wildlife technician in the Ashland field office in the Medford district of the Bureau of Land Management. Busk entered photos of two bats in this year’s competition, including a bat named Hoary Potter and the Guano of Fire which made it to the final round of judging. She joins us to talk about Oregon bats and the vital roles they play in our ecosystems.

Blaming is blasphemy because it is denying the power of God at work in our lives. It is trying to prove we're hapless victims of circumstance. Since the Universe always responds to our beliefs, blame prevents the good we desire from dropping into our laps. On this episode, Darrell and Ed point out the fact that when we drop the blame, especially toward ourselves, we invite God into our experience and everything improves. And, during the second segment, Miracle-minded Skate Instructor and Influencer Mitch Busk gets us enthusiastically looking for the golden links in the chain of our good with today's reading, “Bold”.

HUB History - Our Favorite Stories from Boston History

When it came steaming into Boston Harbor 81 years ago this week, the fishing trawler Buskø was escorted by a Coast Guard cutter, with armed guards watching over her crew. The next day's headlines declared that the US had captured a Nazi spy ship manned by Gestapo agents who were setting up secret bases in Greenland, but the truth turned out to be more complicated. The Busko was sailing under the Norwegian flag and manned by a Norwegian crew, yet their peaceful voyage to deliver supplies to isolated Norwegian hunters in the arctic was used to cover up Nazi intelligence gathering, so what would the fate of the ship be? And while war was raging in Europe, the United States was technically at peace, so on what charges were the Norwegian crew held at the East Boston immigration station?
