Jill Halfpenny has been an actor since the age of 10, first coming to our screens in Byker Grove in 1989, and most recently appearing in the Channel 5 drama The Feud. She has also appeared in Coronation Street, Eastenders, numerous TV dramas, on the West End stage and in Strictly Come Dancing. We shared our thoughts on dealing with downtime as performers, which has its challenges even in a busy career.Jill has a son Harvey who is nearly 17, and they clearly have a close relationship, based on honesty and openness, including during difficult times such as when her partner Matt died suddenly 8 years ago, in circumtances similar to how she lost her Dad aged 4. Sadly they both had unexpected heart attacks. Jill has recently written a beautiful memoir 'A Life Reimagined', which touches on both these deaths. Finally, I tried out Jill's Agony Aunt skills as she has a podcast 'Dear Jill' where she answers listeners' questions, from her Newcastle studio. I can now tell you that I am either on the right tracks as a mum or Jill was being extremely kind to me!Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones. I am so excited that today we are joined by a true trailblazer, Rose Ayling-Ellis who I have wanted to have on the podcast for ages and trust me this conversation was worth the wait! Rose has achieved so many firsts: she is the first deaf person to win ‘Strictly Come Dancing' which even won her a BAFTA, the first deaf person to host live sports coverage on British TV as a presenter for the 2024 Paralympics, and the first deaf actor to be nominated for an Olivier Award for her performance in ‘As You Like It'. And now after acting for 13 years she has landed her first lead role in ITV's gripping new TV drama, ‘Code of Silence' which follows her character Alison who is plucked from working in the police station canteen and recrutied to lip read for the police on a dangerous case. Plot spoiler: it's INCREDIBLE! In this episode we talk about the hurdles and prejudice Rose has had to overcome to pursue the career she's dreamed of, the lessons she's learned from resilience and the pressure that comes from being a trailblazer. We also chat about the mental health problems in the deaf community which we all need to pay more attention to and how we can all make space for oneanother to become a truly inclusive society. If you love this conversation as much as I do, get in touch with me across socials @joshsmithhosts as I always love hearing from you. I'll see you next week for another episode of ‘Reign'. Love, Josh x P.S The power of conversation is so important and asking for help instead of trying to face stuff alone can be SO empowering. Short films are difficult. It's easy to tell a story across 90 minutes or a couple of hours, where plot and characterisation can expand and grow. However, it takes real skill to deliver something short, punchy (and more importantly) narratively cohesive within a couple of minutes. This takes us nicely along to Dakota Stone, a new short from director Sherice Griffiths and writer Alfie Scattergood (aka Paul Knight). Clocking-in at just nine minutes, the film features professional dancer, choreographer, and star of the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, Nancy Xu as an ass-kicking ‘fixer'. Offering-up action and characterisation, Dakota Stone is an entertaining little flick that works well within its own confines, while also feeling like an amuse-bouche to a much larger story. Sherice Griffiths, Alfie Scattergood and Nancy Xu joined the Movies In Focus podcast to talk about Dakota Stone. During the course of the conversation, they discuss how the project came together, the logistics of making a short film in a limited timeframe - as well as teasing the future of the Dakota Stone character in a larger format.

Joining us today is one of the UK's most loved comedians, and our reigning Strictly champion, whose journey is as inspiring as it is hilarious — it's the brilliant Chris McCausland! In this episode, Chris opens up about the challenges and triumphs of navigating life without sight, from losing his vision in his early twenties to becoming one of the country's most in-demand stand-up comics. He shares how a sick day in 2003 unexpectedly launched his comedy career, why authentic representation on TV really matters, and how he's used humour to challenge stereotypes and shift perceptions. He also reflects on the life-changing experience of winning Strictly Come Dancing, speaking candidly about the emotional toll, the physical intensity, and the unexpected pride he found in lifting the glitterball trophy.Beyond the stage and screen, Chris chats about fatherhood, the role of technology and AI in transforming his everyday life, and how writing his upcoming memoir has helped him look back on his journey with fresh perspective and deep gratitude.Chris's debut memoir is out this October and available to pre-order now. Joining Anna on the podcast this week is the legendary dancer and choreographer Dame Arlene Phillips. From humble beginnings in Manchester, she ended up at dance school in London, where she worked as a live-in nanny for none other than film director Ridley Scott in order to get by. From there, she gained stratospheric success in dance and choreography - and her groundbreaking dance troupe, Hot Gossip, made her a household name in the 70s.As a choreographer and director, her credits include countless shows in the West End, on Broadway, and in film - and her music video credits read like the playlist for the greatest party of all time: Elton John, Donna Summer, Pet Shop Boys, Whitney Houston…you name it, she's worked with them. She was one of the original judges on Strictly Come Dancing, and she even braved the jungle on I'm A Celebrity...Arlene is now in her 80s and is still working on musicals like Guys and Dolls and Grease. She talks to Anna about how dance is the greatest passion of her life and what it brings to her, how social standards and expectations for women are unfair, particularly when they get older, and what ambition looks like for her now at 81. Bill Bailey stars as Guy Starling, a middle aged man who, after 45 years, and for reasons quite unknown to him, is suddenly revisited by his imaginary childhood friend, Hennikay. When Guy's great business idea – developing a phone-based app designed to stop people using phone based apps – unsurprisingly fails, he needs to find a job. And so he attends a sales seminar with Shining Path, who are apparently, "the number one providers of after-life finance packages in the UK".However, his attention is constantly derailed by the constant chatter of Hennikay, his imaginary childhood friend, who is still determinedly living in his head. And if that wasn't enough, he also has to cope with Tony, his old boss, who is also there, competing with him to land a job.But try as he might, Guy really can't get enthused by the idea of a career selling pre-paid funeral plans to the people of Maidstone. We had the pleasure of interviewing Grace Davies over Zoom video!Grace Davies unveils her latest single 'Another Night,' a masterfully crafted, feel-good pop anthem which showcases her remarkable vocals and creative talent within songwriting & music production. The track's infectious energy immediately captivates listeners, creating an irresistible and timeless soundscape that will leave you instantly hooked.Crafted in collaboration with producer Paul Whalley & topliner Ben Lythe, 'Another Night' draws inspiration from Grace's childhood musical influences, notably ABBA, infusing the track with a nostalgic, warm, fuzzy feeling that resonates deeply with us all. The production masterfully balances retro elements with contemporary pop sensibilities - creating a unique for current times, yet universally appealing sound that wraps listeners in a comforting sonic embrace. ‘Another Night' is a result of an unconventional songwriting approach for Grace – working backwards from melody to lyrics. "I never work like that, normally" Grace reveals. "I usually have a specific topic I want to write about, come in with lyrics pre-prepared, and then find a melody. This time “Producer Paul” had the piano part already in his voice notes and I just mumbled gibberish over the top that happened to sound like the words “Another Night”. It was really fun to imagine what the song could be about from a title, rather than picking from past experiences." Grace, Ben & Paul have become somewhat of a “dream-team”, in their own words, across the forthcoming project - with ‘Another Night' being their inaugural co-write together. At its core, 'Another Night' explores the delicate balance of relationships pushed to their breaking point. The track delves into the territory of paranoia in love, chronicling the moment when small grievances snowball into irreparable damage. The song's gradual build-up mirrors this emotional journey, culminating in a powerful revelation of vulnerability and regret. Yet, true to Grace's artistic vision, she transforms this heavy narrative into an uplifting dance-pop experience. When listening to Grace Davies' single ‘Another Night' she playfully notes, "You can't help but dance... ‘Dance Cry', my personal favourite genre!" This brilliant juxtaposition of emotional depth and catchy chorus, paired with the nostalgic melodies, creates a fun pop anthem that is not only relatable but encourages listeners to find joy and have fun, even in life's more challenging moments.About Grace DaviesGrace Davies is a 27-year-old singer, songwriter, musician and producer from Blackburn, Lancashire. Since the beginning of her career, Grace has scored huge success, with over 100M+ streams for her songs on Spotify alone, support across the board at radio and acclaim everywhere from The Sunday Times to the BBC. At the age of 18, Grace's first self-released project received national BBC Introducing support, was championed by BBC 6 Music and had a track remixed by Radio 1 Dance Music DJ, Danny Howard. In 2017, she was invited to appear on the X Factor and her audition video of original song ‘roots' went viral. In a first for the show, Grace shook up the format by showcasing her original material throughout the competition and triumphed as runner up - gaining a top 2 iTunes chart position and numerous top 10s. 2020 marked the start of a new era in Grace's career – her debut EP Friends With The Tragic reaffirmed her reputation as an exceptional songwriter. Following the closure of her former label SYCO, she self-released her second EP I Wonder If You Wonder in 2021, which was an even bigger success - with standout release ‘roots' (written solely by Grace), reaching the Top 3 in the UK iTunes Single Charts, the Official Charts Top 100 and the UK Big Top 40, as well as plays on BBC Radio 1Xtra, BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, Heart & Capital FM. Her last EP, It Wasn't Perfect, But We Tried sees her at her most confident and in the producer's chair for the first time. As well as writing credits on all five songs, she co-produced three tracks, and fully produced two of the tracks herself, proving her a true multi-hyphenate. Grace's catalogue continues to gain in popularity for sync in international TV programmes, including Love Island, Britain's Got Talent, I'm A Celebrity (Get Me Out Of Here), Strictly Come Dancing, American Idol, Eastenders, Hollyoaks and many more. Grace is completely owning her sound and is never happier than being at the forefront of her projects, both sonically as well as creatively. As a result, she is blazing a trail for women in a male-dominated industry. Grace Davies has had a consistent stream of incredibly crafted music that deeply connects her to her listeners; part of that body work includes her previous single “A Wonderful, Boring, Normal Life' generating acknowledgement from Clash Magazine, Equate Magazine and The Official Charts Company. Now with her latest single 'Another Night,' she channels her artistic excellence into a nostalgic pop anthem that proves Grace Davies is back better than ever, ready to dominate both playlists and dance floors across the UK.We want to hear from you!
