What should the NHS pay for, and what should it not? In this week's episode, Ed Balls and George Osborne tackle one of the toughest political questions: how do you decide what's “reasonable” for the state to fund when it comes to healthcare? As medical advances multiply and the public expects more from the NHS, is a national conversation about rationing unavoidable? Then, what happens when politicians leave office? A listener asks how Ed and George's lives outside Westminster - from Wall Street and museums to breakfast TV and Strictly Come Dancing - have changed how they see politics. Would they govern differently if they ever returned? Also this week: do the markets now have more power than elected governments? What should we expect from ministers on annual leave? And is there ever a good reason to read self-help books such as The 48 Laws of Power?Plus, what really happened in that lift in China with George Osborne and Boris Johnson? To get episodes early and ad-free, join Political Currency Gold or the Kitchen Cabinet:

Jill Halfpenny has been an actor since the age of 10, first coming to our screens in Byker Grove in 1989, and most recently appearing in the Channel 5 drama The Feud. She has also appeared in Coronation Street, Eastenders, numerous TV dramas, on the West End stage and in Strictly Come Dancing. We shared our thoughts on dealing with downtime as performers, which has its challenges even in a busy career.Jill has a son Harvey who is nearly 17, and they clearly have a close relationship, based on honesty and openness, including during difficult times such as when her partner Matt died suddenly 8 years ago, in circumtances similar to how she lost her Dad aged 4. Sadly they both had unexpected heart attacks. Jill has recently written a beautiful memoir 'A Life Reimagined', which touches on both these deaths. Finally, I tried out Jill's Agony Aunt skills as she has a podcast 'Dear Jill' where she answers listeners' questions, from her Newcastle studio. I can now tell you that I am either on the right tracks as a mum or Jill was being extremely kind to me!Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones. I am so excited that today we are joined by a true trailblazer, Rose Ayling-Ellis who I have wanted to have on the podcast for ages and trust me this conversation was worth the wait! Rose has achieved so many firsts: she is the first deaf person to win ‘Strictly Come Dancing' which even won her a BAFTA, the first deaf person to host live sports coverage on British TV as a presenter for the 2024 Paralympics, and the first deaf actor to be nominated for an Olivier Award for her performance in ‘As You Like It'. And now after acting for 13 years she has landed her first lead role in ITV's gripping new TV drama, ‘Code of Silence' which follows her character Alison who is plucked from working in the police station canteen and recrutied to lip read for the police on a dangerous case. Plot spoiler: it's INCREDIBLE! In this episode we talk about the hurdles and prejudice Rose has had to overcome to pursue the career she's dreamed of, the lessons she's learned from resilience and the pressure that comes from being a trailblazer. We also chat about the mental health problems in the deaf community which we all need to pay more attention to and how we can all make space for oneanother to become a truly inclusive society. If you love this conversation as much as I do, get in touch with me across socials @joshsmithhosts as I always love hearing from you. I'll see you next week for another episode of ‘Reign'.
