While this was originally posted in the fall of 2019, for the third year in a row I'm reduxing it. It is, again, an appropriate meditaion for this quiet time of year, as the football games are starting to pass us by even if their music is still in the air. The warmth of the summer is still around, sometimes, but mostly it's cooling down, and it's a time for comfort food and old memories and people not seen in a long time. And, certainly, thoughts of mortality , of the time gone and the time left. "Never let a night like tonight go to waste." ==================================================== Considering whether Gen X views of life, death, and immortality were shaped by two mid-80s films: Highlander (1986) and The Lost Boys (1987) Yes yes yes, I said Steward Copeland at about 9:12 and realized just moments ago that I completely meant Douglas Coupland, who wrote Generation X: Tales For an Accelerated Culture in 1991 https://www.coupland.com/books/generation-x-tales-for-an-accelerated-culture And my point there is that in 1987 the Lost Boys was certainly depicting Gen X characters with Gen X actors, but nobody called them Gen X at the time. Interview with the Vampire was published in 1976 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interview_with_the_Vampire Its sequel, The Vampire Lestat, was 1985 The Mystery of Dracula's Castle - a scooby doo mystery in all but name, with inspiration from Christopher Lee's Dracula over and over. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068985/ The Hunger https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085701/ The Lost Boys - straight to the tagline https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093437/taglines Highlander https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091203/ Cocoon https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088933/ Siskel and Ebert - Lost Boys starts at 9:44 - https://siskelebert.org/?p=2948 Highlander is the first one here, about 1:30 - they both disliked it rather a lot https://siskelebert.org/?p=1496 First chapter of The Golden Bough - Frazer calls the King a "murderer" rather than a "killer" so I'll randomly note that A) in the 1536 battler in Highlander, the Macleods are fighting the Frasers and B) "Matador" is literally "killer" in Spanish The Spirit of Christmas, which spawned South Park, references Highlander's repeated line "There Can Be Only One" https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0122264/ When talking about Reactives and the Awakening, probably worth looking at this previous entry on my blog https://crisis.generationalize.com/2014/01/reactiveness.html Unrelated but it's a photo series called Lost Boys - millennials back at home after college or high school or whatever they decided they could do. https://www.businessinsider.com/liz-calvi-lost-boys-photo-project-2014-9#calvi-started-with-her-good-group-of-guy-friends-but-eventually-branched-out-to-look-for-more-subjects-in-town-nolan-pictured-here-is-currently-studying-graphics-in-college-and-he-lives-with-his-parents-for-the-summer-2 Here's the archive she set up https://seulementdanslereve.tumblr.com/archive And her home page https://www.lizcalvi.com/commissions "Vampire of the Mists" (1991) was a few years later, so probably influenced by Anne Rice and The Lost Boys and everything. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire_of_the_Mists Wikipedia sayeth that Peter Pan first appeared in a novel in 1902, while the play first appeared in 1904. Growing up in Malaysia, where arts and culture often faced censorship issues due to political sensitivities, I had limited exposure to unfiltered cultural reporting. That changed significantly when I discovered BFM, a business station that took the bold initiative to report, analyze, and bring Malaysia's arts and culture scene to the masses. So in 2022 (yes, that long ago), I spoke with one of the most distinct and inspiring voices behind this transformation: Sharmilla Ganesan.Sharmilla, with a BA in Media Studies from Murdoch University and an MA in Communication, Film Studies from RMIT University, is a writer, journalist, moderator, emcee as well as arts & culture critic with over 15 years of experience covering Malaysian culture. At BFM 89.9, she's been the voice behind numerous shows that explore arts, literature and film. Highlights include anchoring the Evening Edition, the station's drivetime current affairs show which covers a huge variety of topics including politics, economy and human rights. Now, she plays an essential role as Content Manager at the Creador Foundation, where she helps pioneer innovative solutions for social impact in South and Southeast Asia - most notably, the Cipta Seni Incubator, which provides Malaysia-based performance artists with creative development resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities. In this episode, we discuss the key nuances between radio broadcasting and podcasting, the role of media in preserving culture, and Sharmilla's personal approach to sustaining her multi-faceted career with exceptional quality and consistency. While many things have changed in these last three years, one thing remains - radio will always have a place in the arts. Although only a minor hit in the U.S., "Video Killed the Radio Star" topped the charts in a number of countries, and Buggles' 1979 The Age of Plastic became a hit in many countries. It was popular enough that Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes, the two main members of the band, were asked to join Yes for their Drama album in 1980. When Yes broke up the plan was to make another Buggles album, only Downes got recruited into Asia. Horn went ahead anyway, using demos and new songs, to create the second, and last album by the band. This week's Over the Line Podcast dives into a wild mix of comedy, chaos, and controversy. David Linham and Tony Gump are back in the saddle—minus John Bird (who's living it up in Martha's Vineyard).Tony shares his insane flat tire + Xanax panic attack story that nearly ended in disaster, while David recounts how Bird raided his pantry again. The crew reacts to the new Bubba documentary “Video Killed the Radio Star”, Howard Stern's rumored retirement and contract drama, and how Bubba has built a digital empire post-Hogan scandal. They also tackle the fallout from the Charlie Kirk assassination, including how comedians are handling (or mishandling) tragedy on stage, plus Jeffree Star's surprising viral reaction. Add in discussions about AI reels clogging Facebook feeds, dildo-throwing jokes at NFL/WNBA games, and Tony's unforgettable MySpace horror story, and you've got one of the most unfiltered OTL episodes yet.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

So I thought well, I'm not going to be a vet then am I? I literally fell into radio.4:34 - I would say some of the most memorable for me are the ones where we've raised serious, serious money for charities.9:25 - You know, with what we do at Gen X again going back to my childhood, I'm not reinventing the wheel here these are all very simple games and challenges that me and my sister made up when we were kids.9:54 - We're not bringing in all these high tech games to keep the kids occupied. We're doing back to basic team games that will build them as a team, give them confidence, win them prizes.10:19 - I do think we're losing that sense of imagination these days because we don't really have to use it anymore.10:30 – You can have really simple fun with simple things.11:01 - One thing that we never do at Gen X, we would never berate a child for having mobiles.11:46 - I think, because what we have at Gen X isn't screen focused, so they are encouraged to go back to the old school way of doing it, to interact with kids, to interact with each other.12:07 - They are structured in a way that include you need a team. You know you've got to work as a team to win. So, if you want to win, you're going to have to speak to your peers, get involved.12:43 - It's all about socializing with each other, and you know we don't just concentrate on the ones with the loudest voice or the ones that are more outgoing.15:44 - I always say to the parents you'll be surprised, because they don't have the opportunity to get bored here. They very rarely misbehave.23:45 - Do not heThe Matrix Green Pill Podcast: https://thematrixgreenpill.com/Please review us: https://g.page/r/CS8IW35GvlraEAI/review

This week, the girlies log on to discuss the strange and somewhat evil journey of content streaming. They track the rise from radio to Napster to Netflix, expose how labels teamed up with platforms to rob artists blind, and unpack how mood playlists and background noise culture encourage you to passively consume your music, not listen to it. They also hear from binchies who have done away with streaming entirely, and talk about hopeful alternatives for finding and interacting with art you love. Digressions include: Matt Rife's new haunting business venture, Katy Perry's stay at the Khia Asylum, and unfortunately, hitting the Sydney Sweeney button. Todd and Cathy share the upcoming changes to their podcast, Zen Parenting Radio, which will be renamed Zen POP Parenting starting June 1st! They also discuss the normal shifts in kids' friendships, highlighting the importance of loyalty, boundaries, and the reality that friendships evolve. As parents, we can feel more overwhelmed than our kids when these changes happen, but it's important to normalize the ups and downs of friendships and offer support without letting our own fear or discomfort take over.
In this monologue episode, I talk about how I veered away from the audio only experience of this podcast, and how I plan to get back on track and back to the roots of this podcast. This is important to me, as I try to remember why I started all of this, the kind of content I enjoy, and the fun journey this has all been. I reveal who my next podcast guest is in this episode, and it is just as much as a surprise to you as it is to me! Thank you for listening wherever you are listening to this podcast, and while I cannot promise consistency with this podcast, I can I promise you that as I go forth with this podcast medium, that I am going to continue to learn and grow as a hobby podcaster!

It's The British Broadcasting Century's century! Thanks if you've joined us for the story so far, from Morse and Marconi to Reith and the Pips (before Gladys Knight took over lead vocals). This special 100th episode is for both the newcomer and the seasoned veteran - being the previous 99 episodes in summary form, BUT with lots of new bits. So this is no best-of... (alright it's a bit of a best-of) ...this is packed with new things we didn't know, old things we hadn't found yet, new perspectives on the areas we've covered previously, things we left out completely, and much more, or less, depending on how you look at it. New things include: The first song Marconi played via wireless (thanks John Hannon) New (corrected!) info on Marconi's first sports report by wireless - not 1899 in America, but 1898 in Ireland... Long clips of Britain's first DJ Gertrude Donisthorpe, Marconi engineer William Ditcham, first broadcast singer Winifred Sayer, Marconi man R.D. Bangay, and more, that we haven't played you before. News on the Melba recording (er, not good news) A 6min-long never-before-heard reminiscence by Arthur Burrows, reflecting on the first BBC broadcast, with new info - including the 2LO orchestra being accused of electoral bias because of their song choice. The first accusation of BBC on-air bias... in musical form! The opening words of the first BBC children's broadcast New info on Harry Tate's 'Broadcasting' sketch (thanks Alan Stafford) The first singer of Cardiff 5WA The Sykes Committee look into the BBC (just to keep the story moving forward, a bit) And we've been asking you for your favourite moments so far. So we re-bring you: Peter Eckersley on 2MT Writtle Tales from 2ZY Manchester and 5IT Birmingham More Peter Eckersley on 2MT Writtle Even more Peter Eckersley on... ...You get the idea. Thanks for joining us for our first 100 episodes - here's to our next 100. Do share this with people to help make that happen! . SHOWNOTES: Original music is by Will Farmer. Our re-enactment of the first BBC broadcast is on Youtube. Dr Andrea Smith's new book is Shakespeare on the Radio, published by Edinburgh University Press. Alan Stafford's book is Bigamy Called the Radio Star, published by Fantom. Paul's latest Substack article is about Arthur Burrows (first voice of the BBC) and his link with the Eurovision. I claim there's no Eurovision with him! Find it on paulkerensa.substack.com See Paul Kerensa on tour, with An Evening of (Very) Old Radio: www.paulkerensa.com/tour. *The music in this video is copyrighted and all rights reserved to the respective copyright holders* In the premiere episode of The Audio Files, hosts Brad Zerbo and Jaytriot fire up Saturday night with a high-voltage celebration of all things music. From their roots as lifelong metalheads to their guilty pleasures in disco and Motown, the duo delivers deep musical passion with equal parts reverence and riotous fun. They kick off with a tribute to AC/DC and Casey & the Sunshine Band, then trade stories of their earliest musical influences, Brad's Monkees obsession and metal awakening via Sepultura and Megadeth, and Jay's unforgettable childhood brush with David Lee Roth (and the comment that ended a potential stepdad relationship in one sentence). The show includes a heartfelt Mother's Day In Memoriam segment, spotlighting Glenn Miller and Blondie, plus a sobering tribute to Blondie's late drummer Clem Burke. The pair also introduce a recurring segment, Video Killed the Radio Star, launching with Billy Squier's legendary career-killing video for “Rock Me Tonight.” From punk and metal to disco and funk, The Audio Files is a love letter to music across genres, with live commentary, backstories, and raw appreciation for what makes music timeless. As they sign off with Parliament's “Flashlight,” it's clear: this isn't just another music podcast. It's a full-body jam session and a joyride through the soundtrack of your life.

In our latest flexidisc we look into the story behind Video Killed The Radio Star. The production, the instrumentation, the arrangement and the glasses. Who were The Camera Club? How did Tina Charles fit into the story? Who exactly was Dr. Bop? We heard this on the wireless back in '79. And we've been loving it ever since.
