Lucinda talks with Kate Jones, a leadership coach and consultant from Neon, about the evolving landscape of leadership, culture, and well-being in organisations. Kate shares her journey from frontline social work to management consulting and ultimately founding Neon, where she focuses on fostering deeply human leadership capabilities. Together, they talk about the growing demand for purpose-driven work, particularly among younger generations, and the challenges of maintaining a meaningful organisational culture amidst the pressures of a fast-paced work environment KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a noticeable shift, particularly among Generation Z, who are increasingly seeking purpose and meaning in their work beyond just financial gain. This trend reflects a broader societal demand for organisations to act as forces for good. Many organisations, including those in the public and third sectors, often operate in a "hamster wheel" culture characterised by constant busyness and a lack of time for reflection, creativity, and genuine connection. Effective leadership should focus on five key elements: Clarity of Purpose, Connection, Consciousness, Creativity, and Care. These elements help create a people-focused culture that enhances employee well-being and organisational performance. Employee well-being is a shared responsibility between the organisation and the individual. While organisations must foster a supportive culture, individuals also need to take responsibility for their own well-being by setting boundaries and prioritising self-care. BEST MOMENTS "I suppose purpose could also be where Gen Z or anyone is expecting an organisation to do stuff about being more sustainable." "The hamster wheel culture is a culture of busyness, where you don't have time to think about what you're doing or connect with yourself or other people." "Are we helping people to understand what's important, particularly in an environment where priorities might be shifting?" "Employee wellbeing equals deeply human leadership, plus deeply human culture, plus deeply human infrastructure multiplied by employee responsibility." Luke spoke to music therapist Alphonso Archer about his career in music, music education, music therapy, and football coaching. This has included big personal challenges, inspiring moments and the development of innovative and creative approaches. Alphonso says: I spent over 25 years immersed in IT, Software, and Artificial Intelligence, building a career rooted in technological expertise. However, a personal diagnosis of prostate cancer and a brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in 2016 marked a pivotal moment, guiding me towards the world of music therapy. My transition was also profoundly influenced by my personal experiences. Growing up with a father diagnosed with schizophrenia offered me firsthand insights into the complexities of mental health. My academic exploration in this area led to a dissertation titled "Ambiguities in the Diagnosis of Schizophrenia Amongst Ethnic Minorities", shedding light on mental health nuances within the black community. I trained as a music therapist at the University of the West of England (UWE), graduating with distinction in 2022. As a newly qualified freelance music therapist, I work with neurodiverse children, particularly those with autism and other co-occurring conditions. My therapeutic approach also encompasses adults with autism and those managing mental health challenges. Collaborating with a cancer charity, I facilitate music therapy sessions tailored for those navigating the aftermath of a cancer diagnosis. I am publishing my master's dissertation, which centres on "How Black Men Use Music to Cope with the Psychosocial Symptoms of Their Prostate Cancer Post Treatment". This research underscores my interest and commitment to understanding the intricate connections between music, therapy, race, and health outcomes. At the 2022 European Music Therapy Conference, I had the opportunity to co-present with Dr Kate Jones, who introduced her music therapy toolkit designed for children with selective mutism. I was also involved in workshops and discussions surrounding race and belonging, social dreaming matrix and shared my thoughts on the future trajectory of the music therapy profession. Music has been a constant as a multi-instrumentalist, starting in church and rich experiences such as playing guitar in the Derbyshire Youth Jazz Orchestra to jazz piano lessons with composer and recitalist James Harpham. For over two decades, I have taught piano, guitar and bass, instruments that I've been connected to since my early years. You can contact me via my new website: www.livingwellthroughmusic.com Twitter: @AlphieArcher

Kate Jones, Senior Associate for Teaching and Learning, interviews Science teacher, co-founder of Carousel Learn and author Adam Boxer about retrieval practice in the classroom. Understanding the role of memory in the learning process is essential for all educators. It is important for those planning and designing lessons to be aware of the limitations of working memory and recognise how regular retrieval practice can strengthen long-term memory. Retrieval practice involves recalling already-learned information from long-term memory to make that learned information easier and quicker to retrieve in the future. In this episode: Adam Boxer explains why teachers should carefully consider the language used when discussing retrieval practice in the classroom, providing all learners with retrieval opportunities. Kate asks Adam how teachers can provide retrieval opportunities, other than a ‘Do Now' or quizzing starter task. Adam explores the importance of regular retrieval practice and how retrieval opportunities can be promoted throughout a lesson and for homework. Adam talks about how Carousel Learning was developed and explains all the different features and tools the platform can provide for teachers. You can found out more about Carousel Learn here. Retrieval practice in the primary classroom is also explored. Finally, Kate and Adam explain the importance of explaining effective (and ineffective learning strategies) to students. To enhance your use of retrieval practice you can access the Science of Learning Programme, as part of the Great Teaching Toolkit and download the eBook Retrieval Practice: Myths, Mutations and Mistakes. All of our podcasts can be found in our podcast archive, and we have a host of free eBooks, videos and webinars for you in our Resource Library.

Image Bilberry Bumblebee (Bombus monticola) © Steven Falk “Get the Marches Buzzing” a new Buglife project, set to restore 57 hectares of lowland heath and species-rich grassland across Shropshire and North Herefordshire has received funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Severn Trent Water. Get the Marches Buzzing starts Winter 2022 and will work to restore habitats critical to the survival of the Dingy Skipper (Erynnis tages) and the Bilberry Bumblebee (Bombus monticola). This project is added to the cohort of B-Lines projects running up and down the country, from Perthshire in Scotland down to Cornwall in South England. New project aims to restore 57 hectares of Shropshire lowland heath Since the 1930s over 97% of all flower-rich grasslands has been lost, leaving our pollinators vulnerable and in serious decline; B-Lines are an imaginative and beautiful solution to this loss. B-Lines are 3km wide ‘insect pathways' running through our countryside and towns, connecting wildflower-rich habitats across the UK. These lines are to be filled with wildflowers to enable pollinators, and other wildlife, to move through our landscape to feed, nest and hibernate. Get the Marches Buzzing will see Buglife teaming up with delivery partner Herefordshire Meadows to work with landowners in North Herefordshire; restoring over 13 hectares of species-rich grassland. In Shropshire, Buglife will be working with Shavington Estate, Telford & Wrekin Council, Severn Trent and the National Trust to restore almost 44 hectares of lowland heath and species-rich grassland. Two roles will be created for this project, a Project Officer and Intern. They will oversee delivery of the habitat works; putting together a wide-reaching events programme engaging with schools, community groups, other local charities, youth clubs and reach out to people in-need through Telford and Wrekin Council's green-prescribing service. Get the Marches Buzzing will also have a strong focus on landowner engagement; working with farmer cluster groups to promote and support nature-friendly farming, as well as hosting events to showcase the work delivered with landowners and inspire further action. A series of webinars, in-person events and volunteering will share knowledge about pollinators, wildlife gardening, practical habitat restoration and species monitoring encouraging people to take action themselves and add their projects to the interactive B-Lines map. Kate Jones, Get the Marches Buzzing Project Officer said, “This project is ambitious in its scope and will do important work for wildlife across our rural and urban landscapes by working with landowners, councils and communities to restore and protect our precious habitats, for wildlife and people to enjoy. We are grateful to National Lottery players for making Get the Marches Buzzing possible. Come and help us on a volunteer workday on one of the lowland heath sites in Telford, join us for guided mindfulness events in a local greenspace or log onto one of our webinars to learn what you can do to help pollinators.” Get the Marches Buzzing is being made possible with substantial funding from National Lottery players, via The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Additional funding has been secured through Severn Trent's Great Big Nature Boost. Severn Trent are funding the habitat restoration work in Shropshire which will contribute to their recently released Pollinator Strategy which aims to show how the organization will champion pollinators across the region, through funding projects like this and through work on their own land. Graham Osborn, Principal Ecologist at Severn Trent, said: “Our Pollinator Strategy sets out exactly why everyone, including large businesses need to champion pollinators, they are vital to a healthy ecosystem for wildlife and habitats. “We're delighted to fund what is a wonderful project that will transform such a large area of heath and grassland in our region as part of our commitment to im...

What risks do emerging technologies like the Metaverse and Empathic AI pose? While most of us are aware of data privacy and manipulation risks, we tend to think of them in the context of known technologies like social media. What happens when the tech becomes more immersive? The answer is that areas like human rights come under threat. On this episode, I'm joined by Kate Jones, an Associate Fellow at Chatham House, an independent policy institute. She began her career as a government lawyer and became a diplomat before developing an interest in human rights and emerging technologies. In her research, Kate explores topics such as governance of new technologies, the ethical implications of artificial intelligence and the prevention of online harms and political manipulation. In a wide-ranging discussion, Kate and I explore:* How her career took her from the law, to diplomacy and onto the risks of emerging tech* The Metaverse and the rationale for regulation in emerging tech;* The need for governance over the deployment of emerging tech;* Human rights: what they are, how they are sadly misunderstood and how the human rights movement is shooting itself in the foot;* AI, ethics and human rights * The risks of empathic AI * The future of managing the risks of emerging tech* The relevance of ESG to emerging managing emerging tech risk; and* The role investors can play in resolving this. Discover what's possible when communication breaks down both ways. Our guests this week are Terra Vance and Kate Jones. Terra is the founder of NeuroClastic, an autistic-led non-profit organization that publishes articles by autistic writers and professionals advocating for autistic representation and human rights. Kate is an artist and visual designer at NeuroClastic. In this conversation, we discuss: Being diagnosed later in life and growing up without proper support Anxiety and autistic burnout The medical model vs the social model of disability The consequences of masking The double empathy problem How to teach neurotypical children to interact with autistic peers Utilizing special interests Interdependence and collectivism Advice for allies We also touch on the controversial topic of Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA, which Terra and Kate strongly oppose. In previous episodes, you may have heard from Autistic guests who have reported positive experiences from receiving ABA therapy, as well as autistic behavior analysts currently practicing ABA. As many self-advocates have repeatedly reminded us on this podcast, if you've met one person with autism, you've met one person with autism. As we intentionally share different, and even opposing views in this space, we encourage you to step outside the realm of right and wrong and engage with the wide range of nuanced perspectives coming from the autistic community on hard topics like this. I invite you to listen to this episode from a place of openness and curiosity. If you hear something that triggers an immediate thought of, “No, that's not true!”, I encourage you to pause, and instead ask yourself, “Could this be true?” I know how hard this can be, mainly because it has happened to me many times since we started this podcast... But how much can we really learn if we're not willing to lean into discomfort? What's possible lives in the realm of curiosity. If you have any questions or comments, please join us in our online Global Autism Community, where very diverse opinions are continuously engaging in these types of conversations.
