Joining me on this special bonus episode are Dr Richard McMahon (lecturer in History at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick) and Mike Smalle (academic librarian, musician and former frontman of the great Galway band Cane 141) to discuss Bring Your Own Hammer, a collaborative project that brings historians and composers together to create new song cycles based on historical sources and to re-interpret song material rooted in the history of 19th century Ireland and of the Irish Diaspora. My Grief on the Sea, the project's first album, was released recently featuring the late Cathal Coughlan, Mike Smalle, Jah Wobble, Eileen Gogan, Linda Buckley, Adrian Crowley, Michael J Sheehy, Carol Keogh and others. My conversation with Richard and Mike is interspersed with music from the album and Linda Buckley, Carol Keogh and Michael J Sheehy introduce their songs. Episode notes are here.
In this episode, Lou takes on the difficult theme of Heyward Shepherd, the black porter who was mortally wounded by John Brown's men during the Harper's Ferry raid, on the night of October 16, 1859. Reviewing the initial incidents of the raid, Lou considers the conventional narrative of Shepherd's demise, but then takes a sharp left turn: was Heyward Shepherd really a victim, or did his own actions instigate his shooting? And what was Heyward Shepherd trying to do when he was shot by one of Brown's raiders? The conclusion drawn from looking at the evidence may surprise you, and although it's an exceedingly sad story, it is always better that the truth of the incident be known--especially because it is also useful in understanding the developments in later years that typified the resurgence white supremacy after the demise of Reconstruction. To no surprise, Heyward Shepherd has a part in that story too.Guest music: "Mystery Train" by Michael J. Sheehy, from the album, "Ill Gotten Gains"

VIPop #33 Michael J. Sheehy is both an artist of immense talent and a summary of the history of rock ... Since the creation of the Dream City Film Club more than 20 years ago, he has walked an often chaotic road, but behind this poisonous flamboyance, this visceral blues or this melancholic appeasement, there is also the journey of a man who is certainly deeply attached to becoming what he is and it's truly a deep joy for us to give you the opportunity to hear this right word. Dream City Film Club special with Michael J Sheehy in conversation with David Eastaugh Vocalist Michael J. Sheehy had been working as a solo singer/songwriter for several years when he met Alex Vald and Laurence Ash, who quickly began writing songs with Sheehy. Upon the demise of another local group, Breed, bassist Andrew Park joined. The band's name came from a news story Sheehy had seen about an arsonist who had burned down a members-only porno theatre. They played their first gig as Dream City Film Club on 31 July 1995. They released a single, "Crawl" for the underground fanzine, the Organ in early 1996. Soon after, they were contacted by Beggar's Banquet and recorded their eponymous debut album in late 1996, later releasing it on 26 May 1997.
Michael J. Sheehy is a musician, singer, songwriter, and guitarist, whose collaborations include Dream City Film Club, Miraculous Mule, and United Sounds of Joy. He's just released his first solo album in 11 years, Distance is the Soul of Beauty. The album was recorded and produced during lockdown and he self-released it on Bandcamp for the first time in his career. We talk about how he balances making music with parenthood, what it was like to make this album and release it independently versus the way he has normally worked with labels, how he came to music and gained his confidence to step onto a stage, and his attitude towards the creations he puts out into the world.
