Fresh off the first Cascadia Men's Conference, I'm pleased to share my first long-form podcast episode in some months. Beggar-boxing as in the Odyssey? Not this time. Apollonius in book 2 of his epic brings out the arrogant king of the Bebrycians, Amycus. He may seem kind enough to his neighbors, but no one goes away from his door without getting challenged for a fisticuffs to the death. Then along comes Jason and crew, who receive no xenia, but quickly put the pugilist Polydeuces up to pummeling the king into compliance. Book 2 also features the fabulous story of Phineus the prophet. Poor guy can see the future, but can never get past the appetizers in his meal, thanks to Zeus, before a Stygian stank ruins it all. Thankfully, the Minyans also have with them the sons of Boreas, the North wind. They cash in some frequent flyer miles and release Phienus from the terrible, chimeric, stench-laden, bird women, and tout suite, Harpy Days are here to stay! Tune in for more epic adventures and a really bad opening pun.

News:Marvel's October solicits for Star Wars comics were revealed and the month sees The Fall of Kylo Ren #3 (of 5) and The Book of Boba Fett Adaptation #3 and #4 (of 7) due out.Dark Horse's November solicits had no Star Wars comics among them, an unsettling portent of what's to come? There's been no official word.Marvel had no new announcements about its Star Wars comics, but did reveal it will publish a five-issue Indiana Jones mini-series: "Indiana Jones and the Sword of Pandemonium" by Jason Aaron and Aaron Kuder.Papercutz will launch a new series in 2027, X-Wing Academy, written by Scott Peterson and Joshua Pruett, with art by Craig Rousseau.Announced at SDCC, Papercutz will have another The Mandalorian and Grogu one-shot out in October, called "Nightmare on Nevarro." Contextualizing his discussion within debates among US critics, O'Leary argues that the negotiation between operatic and popular music, and between frothy comedy and more serious themes mark the musicals he analyzes as examples of the middlebrow. Through detailed archival work, O'Leary uncovers the crucial critical networks that originally theorized a middlebrow approach to culture, beginning in the literary circles of Van Wyck Brooks and Archibald MacLeish, and radiating outward to major theater and music critics including Brooks Atkinson and Olin Downes. These writers believed American culture had splintered into factions, which in turn divided American audiences: highbrow art, which they regarded as obscure and elitist; folk art, which they found provincial and alienating; and popular culture, which they considered merely commercial.
