Ridley Scott's Gladiator (2000) wasn't just a movie—it was an event, a cultural phenomenon that revived the sword-and-sandal epic for a modern audience. In this week's Born to Watch podcast episode, we take a deep dive with our Gladiator (2000) Movie Review, a timeless classic that set the bar for historical dramas, earning critical acclaim and five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. With stunning visuals, a poignant score, and unforgettable performances, Gladiator remains one of cinema's greatest achievements. The Story That Defined a GenerationAt its core, Gladiator is a revenge tale wrapped in the grandeur of the Roman Empire. Russell Crowe stars as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a loyal Roman general betrayed by the scheming Commodus, played with unsettling intensity by Joaquin Phoenix. Stripped of his rank, family, and freedom, Maximus is forced into the brutal world of gladiatorial combat. As he rises through the ranks of the arena, he becomes a beacon of hope and rebellion, culminating in a battle not just for his life but for the soul of Rome itself. What makes Gladiator resonate so deeply is its ability to blend intimate human drama with epic stakes. Maximus's vendetta against Commodus intertwines with his larger quest for justice, making every clash in the Colosseum emotionally charged. The screenplay, penned by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson, is poetic and visceral, delivering lines like “Are you not entertained?” that have become iconic in pop culture.A Visual and Sonic MasterpieceRidley Scott is a director known for his meticulous attention to detail, and Gladiator is no exception. The film's portrayal of ancient Rome is nothing short of breathtaking. Using a mix of practical sets, CGI, and miniatures, Scott and cinematographer John Mathieson recreated the grandeur of the Colosseum and the chaotic energy of Rome's streets with staggering realism.Equally stunning is Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard's haunting score. The music perfectly captures the film's shifting tones, from the mournful longing of Maximus's loss to the triumphant swell of his victories. Tracks like “Now We Are Free” remain synonymous with the film's legacy, blending orchestral power with ethereal vocals to evoke an almost mythic quality.A Performance for the AgesRussell Crowe's portrayal of Maximus is the beating heart of Gladiator. His transformation from a respected general to a vengeful gladiator is physically demanding and emotionally rich. Crowe embodies Maximus with a quiet intensity, delivering a performance that won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. His ability to convey a deep well of grief, determination, and defiance elevates the character into the realm of timeless cinematic heroes.Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus, on the other hand, is a masterclass in villainy. He's not just evil for the sake of it—he's deeply insecure, desperate for approval, and chillingly manipulative. Phoenix walks a delicate line, making Commodus repulsive yet compelling, a character you can't look away from, no matter how despicable his actions. The supporting cast, including Connie Nielsen as the morally torn Lucilla and Richard Harris as the wise Emperor Marcus Aurelius, rounds out the ensemble with gravitas and depth. Even in smaller roles, the film excels in giving its characters memorable moments that add richness to the world.Themes That Echo Through HistoryGladiator isn't just a feast for the senses—it's a film that grapples with timeless themes. Justice, loyalty, and the corrupting nature of power all play pivotal roles in the story. Maximus's journey is as much about reclaiming his honour as it is toppling a corrupt regime. His mantra, “What we do in life echoes in eternity,” underscores the film's meditation on legacy and the impact of our actions. The movie also speaks to the enduring appeal of underdog stories. Maximus's rise from slave to hero taps into a universal desire for justice and redemption, making his triumphs all the more cathartic. At the same time, the film doesn't shy away from the brutality of its world, reminding us that victory often comes at a high cost.A Lasting LegacyWhen Gladiator hit theatres in 2000, it reignited interest in historical epics, paving the way for films like Troy, 300, and Kingdom of Heaven. But few have matched its impact. Its influence extends beyond the genre, inspiring video games, TV series, and countless parodies in pop culture. The film's success also cemented Ridley Scott's reputation as a visionary director and launched Russell Crowe into superstardom. It remains a benchmark for storytelling and craftsmanship, a movie that feels as fresh and powerful today as it did over two decades ago.Why We Still Love GladiatorSo why does Gladiator still hold such a special place in our hearts? Part of it is the sheer spectacle—few films manage to combine action, drama, and historical detail so seamlessly. But more than that, it's the emotional core of the story. Maximus's journey is one of loss, perseverance, and ultimate redemption, themes that resonate universally.Watching Gladiator is an experience that lingers long after the credits roll. Whether it's the breathtaking battles, the nuanced performances, or the hauntingly beautiful score, every element works in harmony to create something truly unforgettable.Final ThoughtsOur latest Born to Watch podcast episode celebrates everything that makes Gladiator a masterpiece. From its technical achievements to its emotional depth, the film is a triumph in every sense of the word. It's a reminder of why we go to the movies—to be moved, thrilled, and inspired. If you haven't revisited Gladiator lately, now is the perfect time. As Maximus would say, “Strength and Honour”—this movie delivers both in spades.
The impulse to combine music and film goes back to the very beginning. The Lumiere brothers first silent film screening in Paris in 1895 was accompanied by a pianist. When films were added to vaudeville theaters at the beginning of the 20th century, music was provided by an in-house musician or organist, small ensembles, and even full orchestras. Pipe organs for theaters—at the time the most wide-ranging and loudest instruments available—were built by the American musical instrument company Wurlitzer. The famous "Mighty Wurlitzer" theatre organ was introduced in 1910, and was installed in theatres, museums, and churches around the world. Romantic-Classical styles and orchestration dominated the early years of sound films, and an emotional language of film music became widely understood. As film subject matter expanded, jazz and other "modernist" genres were added. Powerful rhythms, memorable melodic themes, and repeated motifs were common, as well as more subtle, quiet music to create mood and atmosphere. What we call ambient music today, was—and still is—a major part of film music, and came to be called the "underscore." On this transmission of Hearts of Space, ambient and atmospheric music for film, on a program called "UNDERSCORE 3." Music is by TIM STORY, LISA GERRARD & PIETER BOURKE, LUDOVICO EINAUDI, HANS ZIMMER, MYCHAEL DANNA, ENNIO MORRICONE, TOM HOLKENBORG, and featuring BRIAN KEANE'S score for DANTE: INFERNO TO PARADISE. Delighted and honoured to be joined by multi-instrumentalist, Brendan Perry on the podcast this week. Brendan, who is one half of seminal 4AD band, Dead Can Dance, talks to me about his first band The Scavengers and the early punk rock scene in Aukland, New Zealand. His love of Bowie and early musical influences and the recording of Dead Can Dance's self-titled debut album, released back in 1984. So many great stories in this one! Listen wherever you get your podcasts. Link in bio Dead Can Dance are one of my all-time favourite groups, so it was a real honour to speak to Brendan about the truly wonderful music he has made with Lisa Gerrard and as solo artist The overall sound of Dead Can Dance is tricky to define, there are elements of European folk ambient, baroque rock, classical and darkwave in their wonderful, genre-bending music.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we usually talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today, however, we talk about Oscar movies (!), or better yet, movies that were snubbed of Oscar! Conor and Dan welcome the wonderful Joe Reid & Chris Feil of the This Had Oscar Buzz podcast. An official podcast crossover! In today's episode, we each choose an Oscar snub that still sticks in our craw, and use them as a jumping off point for the categories of that respective year. We reference two great past Oscar Buzz eps (A Thousand Acres & Elizabethtown), the lasting influence of Lisa Gerrard, Dan's favorite film performance, Joe's love for Marcelo Zarvos' brilliant score for The Door in the Floor, Chris' admiration of the singular costume (and production) design in Down With Love, and Conor's need to speak up for the masterful Deep Cover. Laurence Fishburne's lead performance specifically. And also, we cannot get around talking about that infamous 2011 James Franco hosting debacle. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter at @TFSBSide. Emma Sherr-Ziarko (Wolf 359, Pairing) joins us to talk about Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard's iconic and wildly influential score for Gladiator. We discuss Emma's history as a dancer/choreographer, two very peculiar controversies the score found itself enmeshed in, the central tension between Earth (Zimmer) and Elyisum (Gerrard) and much, much more. This episode features the wonderful Bulgarian gadulka player Hristina Beleva, and this project would not have been possible without the generous translation and voice-overs from fellow musician Milena Krassi. Milena was with us during the interview and it's mostly her voice that you'll be hearing. Hristina is a virtuoso of the traditional bowed instrument of Bulgaria, the gadulka, which looks a bit like an upside-down violin, with usually 3 main strings and several resonating strings, up to 16. Hristina performs as a soloist with the Ensemble Philip Koutev Folk Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio, the Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices, Bulgara, the Milanov-Beleva duo, and is featured on the 2019 Grammy nominated album with David Kuckhermann and Lisa Gerrard, “Hiraeth”. Hristina recently released a wonderful duo album with bass player Vasil Hajigrudev, “Trikop”. This episode features lots of music, and we talk about both traditional music and her fusion collaborations. In the evolution of cinema, music has been a parallel language, evolving along with the visual and dramatic language of film. In the beginning it was live accompaniment by piano, orchestra, and let's not forget The Mighty Wurlizter! Then came recorded sound, and film music flowered into dozens of subgenres, from conventional to experimental. Whether it's a traditional score for orchestra, a vehicle for popular songs, a fusion of western and world music, a dark and twisted electronic journey, or a subtle ambient tone painting — music is there to create context, to energize, to express the internal feeling of the characters — and deepen our emotional connection to the story. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an hour of choice ambient music for contemporary film, on a program called CINEMOTION. Music is by HANS ZIMMER, DAVID NEWMAN, GREG EDMONSON, LISA GERRARD, and RICHARD MARVIN. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

Zach & Zo are spectators in ancient Rome. The city is absolutely congested. The streets literally smell like dung, but that doesn't bother them as their excitement cannot be deterred! They are here to witness one of the greatest gladiators ever known. Finally, they get to see the undisputed, undefeated heavyweight champion of the known world of gladiatorial combat. They will see a man that had been rumored to have once have been a celebrated and renowned Roman general: a man they only know as "The Spaniard".Episode Segment Time StampsOpening Credits . . . . . . 00:03:11Favorite Parts . . . . . . . . 00:11:00Trivia . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .00:46:53Critics' Thoughts . . . . . .00:57:20Back Look Cinema: The Podcast Links:www.backlookcinema.comEmail: fanmail@backlookcinema.comTwitter: @backlookcinemaFacebook: The Back Look Cinema Podcast Instagram: backlookcinemapodcastTicTok: @backlookcinemaBack Look Cinema Merch at Teespring.comBack Look Cinema Merch at Teepublic.com

As you'd expect, Easter has inspired some of the most sublime and exalted music of the Christian tradition. On this transmission of Hearts of Space from guest producer ELLEN HOLMES, choral and instrumental classics from across nine centuries of Christian sacred music, on a program called "AN EASTER CELEBRATION." Music is by WILLIAM BYRD, HILDEGARD VON BINGEN, RIHARDS DUBRA, PATRICK HAWES, GABRIEL FAURE, OLA GJEILO, MANUEL CARDOSO, ANTOINE BRUMEL, JOHN JENKINS, HEINRICH SCHUTZ, J.S. Book Vs. Movie: The InsiderMarie Brenner's Vanity Fair Article Vs the Michael Mann FilmThe American news program 60 Minutes has long been considered one of the most trusted news outlets in the media. In the mid-1990s their reputation took a hit when they were accused of joining in the silencing of whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand who worked in the tobacco industry and accused his company, Brown & Williamson, of sneaking addictive chemicals into their cigarettes. The Man Who Knew Too Much by Marie Brenner appeared in Vanity Fair in 1996 where she followed Wigand as he dealt with lawyers wanting him to give testimony against Brown & Williamson and his former employer invoking a nondisclosure agreement threatening his financial stability. Wigand felt pressure to do the right thing but did not feel supported until he met 60 Minutes producer Lowell Bergman. A supremely talented journalist with multiple Emmys to his credit, Bergman, and reporter Mike Wallace thought his testimony was an important story to cover. Wigand claimed while waiting for trial, his former employers were harassing him and he went so far as to go to the FBI with allegations but he was labeled an unstable troublemaker and therefore, unreliable. His marriage fell apart and his paranoia increased when death threats were involved. He trusted 60 Minutes would clear his name but CBS President of News, Eric Ober (named Eric Kluster in the movie) decided not to broadcast Wigand's interview as they could be sued by Brown & Willamson. Michael Mann's film deals with the blowback from Bergman and the media at large for what was seen as a cowardly move to protect CBS's upcoming sale to Westinghouse. In the movie, Russell Crowe plays Wigand (playing 20 years older than he was at the time) and Al Pacino as Bergman and The Insider would be a crucial favorite and earned several Academy Award nominations. Alas, it was the same year that American Beauty was nominated for multiple awards for some mind-boggling reason. So, between the original story and the 1999 film-which did we prefer? Patrick Lenk, Lydia Salnikova, Daniel Minimalia, TSODE, Erik Wøllo, Ian Boddy, Jon Mark, David Antony Clark, Tom Vedvik, Martin Tillmann, Hans Zimmer, Henning Lohner, Lisa Gerrard, Klaus Schulze, Craig Armstrong, Evan Dando, Roger Subirana, Jorge Sergio, Bertrand Loreau.
Deep Thoughts on Shallow Subjects We were so inspired by our Lord of the Rings score talk that we decided it would be fun to discuss our Top 10 movie scores. Goofs: When discussing The Mission, it's Gabriel's Oboe not Daniel's Oboe. Lisa Gerrard is the female voice on the Gladiator score not Enya. Troy - Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Godfather, Indiana Jones, The Man with No Name Trilogy, Jurassic Park, Gladiator, The Mission, and Batman (1989) Honorable Mentions - Black Panther, Interstellar, Up, Sicario, and Meet Joe Black Byers - Star Wars, LOTR, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Gladiator, Batman (1989), Braveheart, Nightmare Before Christmas, Black Panther, and Back to the Future Honorable Mentions - Indiana Jones, Jaws, Conan the Barbarian, Dark Knight Trilogy, and Psycho Intro/Outro music by friend of the podcast Seth Gilbertson. For the 6th of our Movie Review podcasts here at TMR we welcome back our good friends Antony Rotunno (Freethinker75 blog), Frank Johnson (Ancient Aliens Debunked blog) and Mark Campbell (Bowler or Fez Film Reviews) for a roundtable discussion on the 1999 based-on-truth thriller The Insider directed by Michael Mann and starring Russell Crowe, Al Pacino and Christopher Plummer. Unceremoniously ejected from the third largest tobacco company in the US, research scientist and high-up executive Jeffrey Wigand (Crowe) has a story to tell that 60 Minutes producer Lowell Bergman (Al Pacino) s desperate to get his hands on. But personal threats against Wigand and his family, and legal threats against CBS if they venture to air Wigand's story, almost succeed in silencing the whistleblower. In the end his words do become public, and his testimony has huge implications for the tobacco industry, but in the process we witness the wheels of power attempting to crush the Lone Voice and a media landscape compromised by the pressures of legal and financial challenges. Join us as we discuss the film's production and consider some of the messages implied by the movie's storyline. In today's podcast we're catching up with Richard Yale, bassist for Dead Can Dance, and Tour Manager/Backline Tech for the likes of Muse, Metallica and the Brand New Heavies.Formed in Melbourne by Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, Dead Can Dance de-camped to London in 1982 and began creating some of the most far reaching goth music you are ever likely to hear. At this point, Perry and Gerrard became the core nucleus of the band supported by an ever-expanding cast of guest musicians. In 2011 bassist Richard Yale was tasked with holding down the low end of DCD's breathtakingly hypnotic songs for a 2011 comeback tour. Richard also works as a backline tech/tour manager for bands like the Brand New Heavies, Muse and Metallica – which should tell you all you need to know about the calibre of musicianship he requires…
