Orbital Resonance (2015) / Kyle Gann. Tres pianos Disklaviers. Deon and Gary were recently away attending the annual NPA Australia Conference, and as usual, some great speakers were presenting. In this special episode, Gary and Deon share some of their key takeaways from their recruiter peers and presenters, particularly Nigel Dalton and Mike Boyle, for you to learn from vicariously!
At age nineteen, Duke Robillard recruited Greg as one of the earliest members of what became the Rhode Island based powerhouse, Roomful of Blues. The unifying magnet within the group in its early years, 1969 -1971, was focus on the rootsy, retro, danceable, swing sound of the ‘40s and ‘50s. This “new” sound to teenage ears and the recall of this music to the older folks, filled dance floors all over the band's New England home-base and eventually on the global stage. For the next twenty-four years, Greg Piccolo had amazing experiences playing with and/or recording with such music legends as Big Joe Turner, Earl King, Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson”, Pat Benetar, Red Prysock, Stevie Ray Vaughan, to mention only a few. As Roomful players would come and go, Greg's twenty-five year contribution evolved to lead singer and bandleader, all the while being noticed world-wide for his signature “fat” tenor sound, unique sax style, and distinguishable vocals. After nearly twenty-five years with Roomful of Blues, Greg sensed a calling to go back to his roots and develop his “heavy juice” sound. This “less is more” approach gave him the freedom to cover the gamut of his musical longings, which include traditional jazz, r & b, and rock'n roll. He had compiled a well of songs which demanded their own arrangements and band configurations outside of the classic “Roomful sound.” In 1994 he stepped away and officially formed his own band, Heavy Juice, which led to his first solo release, self-titled, “Greg Piccolo Heavy Juice,” on the legendary Louisiana-based Black Top label. Following were two releases, Red Lights and Acid Blue, on the famous California-based Fantasy Label (now Concord), and his first all instrumental tenor sax release titled “Homage” on the Pennsylvania-based Emit Doog label. His most recent release, “Who Did This?” is a tribute to his favorite sax recordings and includes an original recorded tenor instrumental. Now at seventy years of age, Greg Piccolo is still practicing his horn every day, writing his own material, and traveling the world with Heavy Juice. Piccolo is an example of someone who has always played from his heart.
Sample collaborative music by Pulitzer Prize-winning vocalist/composer Caroline Shaw and the versatile quartet Sō Percussion from their latest release, Rectangles and Circumstance, as played in-studio. Composer/vocalist/violinist Caroline Shaw, who has produced for Kanye West and Nas, won a Pulitzer Prize in 2013 for her Partita for 8 Voices, which was written for and performed with the vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth; she also teaches at NYU. Brooklyn-based Sō Percussion (Eric Cha-Beach, Adam Sliwinski, Josh Quillen, Jason Treuting) is a force of music and noise-making comprised of composer/percussionists/instrument builders/finders who beat, shake, bow, immerse, and rip all kinds of things – home goods and instruments - both acoustic and electric; they also compose. The members of Sō have worked with Shaw as a composer (Narrow Sea), and collaboratively as a band as on the latest, Rectangles and Circumstance. They've described their groups songwriting as lyrics via adaptations of poetry, or by a band member - and music which can morph - whether added to and/or sliced up; it's a process where everyone contributes equally. Sō describes percussion as an ethos – a willingness to make any and all sounds as requested, by whatever means necessary - whether that is a keyboard, a crotale dipped in water, or ripping a roll of duct tape in time. Despite everything being counted off in four, there are “beats of deceit”, where the music surfs on the edge of some meter, and it carries you, (-Caroline Shaw.) Listen to some of these songs with contributions by Caroline Shaw, and with her band Ringdown, together with Sō Percussion, as played live, in-studio. - Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. Sing On 2. Slow Motion 3. The Parting Glass

Grab your pitch pipes! In this ep, Mat and Tim discuss the world's preeminent a cappella group, Pentatonix. They ask (and answer!) so many questions: Are they a Christmas band? Why do they make those faces all the time? How in the world do they sound like that? Do they actually like being an a cappella group? And so on and so forth. New Classical Tracks - Awadagin Pratt by Awadagin Pratt/A Far Cry/Roomful of Teeth – Stillpoint (Art of the Piano)“When I'm talking to a non-musician, they often say, ‘Oh, you've played in Carnegie Hall, sure, that's great.' But the only time they say, ‘Oh, well, you must be something!' is when they find out I've been on Sesame Street,” says pianist Awadagin Pratt. “It was fun. I did a skit with Big Bird about sharing the piano. He was pecking away at the instrument, and then I entered the room and he said, ‘Do you play the piano?' And I said, ‘Sure, I do.' And he said, ‘Well, why don't you play a little something?' The lesson was about sharing and turn-giving, so we took turns playing.”In the world of classical music, Awadagin Pratt has shared the stage as a pianist, a conductor and, on occasion, as a violinist. He grew up in Pittsburgh, lives in Cincinnati, and now commutes to San Francisco in his new role as a professor at the San Francisco Conservatory.Recently, he also shared the studio with two incredible ensembles, including the string orchestra A Far Cry and the vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth. Together, they bring to life six newly commissioned works which appear on his latest release, Stillpoint.“I was thinking two things. One, we have to have African-American composers. The second thing, in terms of the unifying element was the poem The Four Quartets by T.S. Eliot, which I love. So I decided to fight. I decided we would look at The Four Quartets and see if the composers could take inspiration from some of the lines as a unifying element.“The five lines that I chose are the lines that I love, and they seem to be the right ones:At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.” — T.S. EliotTime Past Time Future is the piece that Alvin Singleton wrote for you. He's an American composer who always hoped that one day he would hear you play his music. What was that experience like for both of you when you were playing his music?“It was great. I had met Alvin decades before and he has such a lovely personality, but he was also so generous. He liked what we were doing. The sound, it was demanding because of the dynamic range of four or five keys to the extreme of four or five fortes. It's challenging because of the stillness, but he loved it, which was really nice. It's always great when a composer is smiling when you finish playing, like, okay, that's pretty good!”The piece that Pēteris Vasks wrote for you is a solo piano work titled Castillo Interior, and it focuses on the past and future gathered. Can you explain what that means and how we hear that in the music? He wrote a piece for violin and cello called Castillo Interior, as well. And that's the piece that he transcribed for me with changes, and the title of the piece references Saint Teresa of Avila who has these seven castles built on the pathway to understanding God.You have, within religion, those opposites of ascetic and ecstatic, and maybe they're not exactly opposites, but there's sort of two opposing energies kind of working together as one. And so the piece is really compelling, people absolutely love it.” Listen on YouTubeTo hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts.ResourcesAwadagin Pratt/A Far Cry/Roomful of Teeth – Stillpoint (Amazon)Awadagin Pratt/A Far Cry/Roomful of Teeth – Stillpoint (Art of the Piano)Awadagin Pratt (official site)A Far Cry (official site)Roomful of Teeth (official site)
STILLPOINT is the first album in 12 years from acclaimed concert pianist Awadagin Pratt. The album comprises six pieces commissioned by different composers, including Tyshawn Sorey and Paola Prestini, and draws from the T.S. Eliot poem, Burnt Norton, as inspiration. It also features the self-conducted string orchestra A Far Cry and experimental vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth. Pratt joins us for a Listening Party. *This segment is guest-hosted by Tiffany Hanssen.
When classical composers incorporate indigenous music into their work, it's more than just cultural appropriation, because indigenous songs are more than just songs: they serve as medicine, law, and history. So what would it mean to redress such misuses, and to bring an indigenous worldview into Western art music? A conversation with Dylan Robinson about appropriation, repatriation, and his path towards becoming a scholar. #250 Etienne Peirsman shared his journey studying cranial sacral therapy and his spiritual awakening, a near-death experience. He had a staph infection in his late 30's, which served as a wake-up call for him to make drastic changes in his life. He expressed gratitude for the bacteria for helping him realize this and has since invited it into his body to help him grow. Etienne was asked what he was doing before the staph infection and what it is. Staph infection is a bacterial infection that can be caused by skin contact, cuts, or wounds. It can cause symptoms such as rashes, swelling, and pus-filled blisters. Etienne discussed his journey with a staph infection which was self-inflicted through dirty water. He was a junkie and was using drugs as an escape from his upbringing in a strict school environment. The staph infection was a gradual decline in health, with the person noticing a sudden lack of energy and then the infection invading the heart, kidneys, and other parts of the body. The bacteria were simply looking for food and the person eventually had to be hospitalized due to the severity of the infection. He reflected on his journey towards a healthier lifestyle and the importance of taking care of one's health. Etienne described his experience with kidney failure due to drug use. He was in a state of panic, not recognizing his own body or face. He was taken to a rehab center and asked what they could do. In a moment of desperation, he requested a room to meditate. After 30 minutes, he experienced a click, a clarity that he had lived the life he wanted to and that it was okay. This clarity lasted for over a year, and the mind slowly started to come back. About Etienne: Etienne Peirsman came to Cranio in a non-traditional fashion. After a staph infection left him with nearly 20% kidney function, he found that preparing to die brought him the clarity of total silence. In a remarkable turn of events, he was able to heal his own body, which led him to travel to the Osho International Meditation Center, where he was first introduced to Cranio during an immersive meditation and bodywork training. From this time Cranio became his life's passion. Etienne is the founder of Peirsman Cranio as well as the CranioSacral Therapie Academy in Holland, where he originated the CranioSacral Professional Organization and is an honorary member of The Dutch CranioSacral Practitioner Society. He produced the first ever online Cranio class, which emphasizes Stem Cells and their superstar capabilities, the Midline as a source of Clarity, and easy ways to reach a No-Mind State. Etienne's first book "Craniosacral Therapy for Babies and Small Children" was published by Penguin Random House and he is about to publish his second book "Tantric Aspects of CranioSacral.” Key Points Discussed: (00:00) - Exploring Cranial Sacral Therapy with Etienne Pearsman: An Incredible Spiritual Awakening (02:14) - The Impact of a Staph Infection on Life's Journey (04:33) - Conversation on Self-Inflicted Staph Infection and Escaping Programming (07:14) - Overcoming Addiction Through Meditation (09:53) - Healing Through Nature (12:15) - Experiencing Respect from Animals in a Pine Forest Clearing (14:40) - Healing Through Meditation (17:38) - Disconnection from Family and the Hospital Experience of a 40-Year-Old Patient (19:44) - Near-Death Experience: A First-Hand Account of a Roomful of People Dying Simultaneously (22:34) - The Transformative Power of Meditation (24:51) - Finding Peace Through Meditation and Nature (31:29) - The Power of Intuition and Trust in Healing (33:31) - Craniosacral Therapy: Exploring the Benefits of Conscious Touch and No-Mind Space (43:37) - The Creation of Life: Aligning with Cosmic Forces (47:29) - The Power of the Midline Field in Healing (50:03) - The Benefits of CranioSacral Therapy How to Contact Etienne Peirsman:www.peirsmancraniosacral.com www.peirsmancranio.com/course/basics About me:My Instagram: www.instagram.com/guyhlawrence/?hl=en Guy's websites:www.guylawrence.com.au www.liveinflow.co
Taking as a starting point Renaissance and Medieval music, Lisel (aka Eliza Bagg – a member of vocal group Roomful of Teeth), creates hybrid music that blends her classical vocal training with electronic production techniques found in hyperpop (like the ‘bass drop' and frequent use of Auto-Tune.) Lisel has absorbed the capabilities of technology into her own music through experiments with Ableton, adding ambient electric sounds and aesthetics, and goes for maximalist sound on Patterns for Auto-Tuned Voices and Delay. Running Ableton, and a Novation Launch Pad for the processing effects, Eliza Bagg, as Lisel, performs some of these studio creations, live on New Sounds. - Caryn Havlik
For our 75th episode, we've got the most significant interruption by Jeff's dogs to date. They'll have to work hard to top this one. But we're here to discuss a number of topics, including Roomful of Blues' 1997 album Under One Roof. For more than 50 years, Roomful of Blues have been delivering their unique blend of music to the masses -- and that's something that we explore: what is it that makes them unique in the crowded field of blues bands? We've got that answer for you. Matt also details a recent music transaction that didn't go exactly as planned and we dig into a bunch of other subjects beyond that -- including laserdiscs! For more Record Player fun, check out our Patreon or bother us on Twitter. We love a good musical discussion! Thank you very much for listening.
Turkish-German singer and composer Alev Lenz, who splits time between London and Germany, has had something of a hit tune with “Fall Into Me”, a song used in the series Black Mirror. That song has had a few versions, including one recorded by vocal octet Roomful of Teeth, and another as a work called “Splendid Soldiers.” Her dark (only sometimes) and thoughtful compositions and collaborations are often finding their places in films and limited series, as in the films Im Nachtlicht and Downhill, and the series Dark. Alev Lenz has been something of a serial collaborator, working with sitarist and composer Anoushka Shankar, Lisel (Eliza Bagg), Sand Dunes, synthesist and producer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, French-Cuban vocal duo Ibeyi, and the aforementioned Roomful of Teeth, to name a few. During the interview, Lenz describes her creative process, and when the words might come in, and shares her experiences in the world of “sync”, when composers license their music to film and streaming series. Plus, hear Alev Lenz and pianist Vana Gierig, recorded in the studio. Set list: "Cigarettes and Blow", "Fall Into Me", "Ivory Tower" Watch "Ivory Tower": Watch "Fall Into Me":

Hi everybody and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. We have a very special guest for today's episode. For the most part, Attendance Bias is focused on fans of the band, and each fan tells his or her story. But once in a long while, a person directly associated with the band will come on the podcast to talk about their history with Phish and to break down a special show or jam. Tom Marshall has been on the pod, Sue Drew who was the band's A&R rep at Elektra Records told her story, and today's guest ranks right up there in his ability to tell about his Phish experience from the inside out. And today's guest is member of the Giant Country Horns and current trumpet player for Roomful of Blues, Carl “Gears” Gerhard. Carl chose to tell about his gig with Phish at Arrowhead Ranch, NY, on July 21, 1991.If you got into Phish at a time when tape collecting was still part of the experience, there is no doubt that this gig came across your radar at some point. The second of two shows, this fan favorite was the midway point of the July 1991 horn tour, and you could tell that the band–the full band–was feeling it, full throttle. Aside from the music, though, a main goal of this podcast is to help the listener feel as though he or she is right there with the guest, feeling and experiencing the show that's being discussed. What makes today's episode special is that Carl is able to get us backstage and onstage with Phish as he tells us about the conversations and decisions that led to the horn tour, and what it felt like to collaborate with Phish and the other members of the Giant Country Horns. More important than anything, though, is that Carl was extremely generous with his time and his words, welcoming us into the world that was Phish tour in the early 90s.So let's join Carl to talk about Tony Bennett, life in the Navy, and 48 hour marathon rehearsals, as we discuss Phish's show from 7/21/91 at Arrowhead Ranch.
