In this episode of Grandma's Silver, we journey to the heart of historic Charleston, South Carolina, for a fascinating conversation with Dr. Sarah Platt—archaeologist, professor, and part of the team behind a groundbreaking excavation at the Heyward-Washington House, co-lead with John Fisher from The Charleston Museum.Dr. Platt walks us through the layers of history being unearthed—literally—as she leads the College of Charleston's in-semester archaeology field school in partnership with The Charleston Museum. Together, we explore the 18th-century gunsmithing workshop once operated by John Milner Sr., the enslaved artisans who sustained it, and the many lives that moved through this storied site.We talk about what archaeology can reveal that written records cannot, how material culture brings forgotten narratives into focus, and why it's so important to make this kind of work more accessible to students and the public alike. This is a conversation about preservation, participation, and the power of uncovering the past—one artifact at a time.RESOURCES:Learn more about the excavationat the Heyward-Washington House here.Plan a visit to The Charleston Museum and follow along on Instagram.Interested in the College of Charleston's Archaeology program? “The individual stuff is great, but you truly measure greatness by what your team does.” Cam Heyward Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro   Ryan, Channing and Fred sit down with the heartbeat of the Pittsburgh Steelers, NFL Pro Bowler and All-Pro defensive tackle, Cam Heyward who joins the guys to talk about his football legacy, personal struggles, roster changes, quarterback questions and his relentless pursuit of a Super Bowl championship. Being drafted in the first round by Pittsburgh in 2011 wasn't just about Cam playing for one of the NFL's premiere organizations, it was the chance for Cam to write the next chapter of his story back in his birthplace, a city that holds a special place to his family. In a moment of personal reflection, Cam speaks of losing his father, Craig “Ironhead” Heyward, and the depression he battled silently from it, almost derailing his young football career. He credits his mother for stepping up, not just as a parent but as an advocate for his football future, making sure coaches knew exactly what kind of player and man they were getting.  Cam's rookie year was also the year Ryan was a captain of the Steelers defense as the two exchange funny stories and talk about the player Cam became and all the different talents and guys who've played for the black and yellow since. Cam opens up about playing alongside his younger brother, Connor Heyward, and how their relationship has evolved from siblings to friends to teammates. He shares what he's learned from past Steelers legends and how he holds his current teammates to the same high standard that was expected of him. He even reveals some of his instigation tactics during practice used to generate a "Steeler" type of locker-room energy. And, we all know Mike Tomlin as one of the greatest coaches and leaders but Cam sheds insight into his bond with Mike T and some of what we don't see from the outside, explaining how the unconditional trust and respect goes far beyond the field and is never questioned.  Beyond the game, giving back is always at the forefront of Cam's daily routine. After multiple nominations, Heyward won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2023, and he opens up about the surreal feeling of earning the NFL's highest honor for community service and the forever gratitude of this accomplishment. But for Cam, legacy isn't just about awards it's about chasing greatness, proving doubters wrong, and leaving behind a name that stands for perseverance and impact. He makes it clear his career won't feel complete without a Super Bowl- He isn't ready to give up the quest for a Lombardi just yet and feels Pittsburgh has the right balance of new faces and veterans to get it done.  Learn more about your ad choices. NFL Draft analyst Ryan Wilson from CBS Sports joined the show. Ryan doesn't love the plan the Steelers have going into next season at QB. Ryan thinks Jaxson Dart can be successful in the NFL, but he isn't sure Pittsburgh is the place that will happen. Ryan doesn't hate the idea of the Dart at 21st overall, but he prefers the Steelers to address other positions before attacking QB next month. Ryan thinks Dart would've been a late day 2 or early day 3 pick last year, just ahead of Spencer Rattler. Could Shedeur Sanders be a real option? Ryan could see the Steelers taking a safety in the 1st round. Ryan sees Derrick Harmon as a late 1st round player and is surprised that the Steelers didn't have a presence at his pro day. The documentary The Philadelphia Eleven tells the powerful story of eleven women who in 1974 shattered barriers by becoming the first female priests ordained in the Episcopal Church – challenging tradition, defying expectations, and paving the way for future generations. Margo Guernsey, Director and Producer of the Philadelphia Eleven, felt it was important to tell their story. “I felt like a little bit like I'd been punched in my gut and been told a story that having been an avid student of American history, both in high school and college and getting a master's degree in history and have never heard, it felt like a story that had gone untold in ways that was a disservice to all of us and that I wanted to pursue telling that story, “said Gurnsey. She began working on the film in 2015 by making connections with the women that are still currently with us so they could tell the story from their experience. “They're getting older. And so, it also meant that it was really important to connect with as many of them as quickly as possible because this was 2015. So not quite yet the 50th anniversary of the ordinations but still pretty far along. But having them tell their own story was always at the very top of our list of how to approach the storytelling of this moment in history, “said Gurnsey. Rev. Nancy Wittig, one of the Philadelphia eleven, recounts the day she was ordained. “I think there was a great deal of anxiety in the air. We knew that we were going against tradition, and we didn't know what was going to happen. I think all of us knew at some level that there would be a lot of anger about it and that we would just have to withstand it, “said Witting. Rev. Cater Heyward on the other hand was extremely excited. “Well, I was mainly excited because I mean all of us had been helping planet and we had some sense of what we hoped would happen and the bishops who were ordaining us had been perfectly wonderful and being accessible to us and helping us talk through what it was we were doing and what they were hoping for. and the 11 of us, we had not all known each other. I mean, I think each of us had probably known somebody among the 11, but none of us had known everyone, so. We had just begun to get to know each other, and that was a wonderful thing too. And we knew that there was some risk involved. We had been told that there had been threats against the church and against us. But we were also assured that every possible precaution had been taken to make sure that we and the entire congregation would stay safe. And so we were grateful for that, “said Heyward. Their close connection sets a warm and engaging tone. Orpheus, who's served at Renaissance for 21 years, shares his journey and is honored to join the conversation. They dive into balancing tradition with modernity in the Church of Christ. Orpheus stresses the need to stay rooted in apostolic tradition but remain flexible on non-essentials, like Sunday morning Bible study, which can adapt to better serve the congregation. Reagan also asks about Orpheus's reputation for breaking down barriers in the church. He explains how deep biblical study revealed divisions that weren't part of God's plan. His mission for unity, spurred by collaborations with Doug Crozier, pushes him to challenge traditional boundaries between Christian churches The conversation turns to race, where Orpheus distinguishes between race as a social construct and ethnic diversity. He highlights Galatians 3:28, stressing that in Christ, there should be no racial or social divides, encouraging a Christ-like mindset of inclusivity. For the Gen Z audience, Reagan asks for advice on ministry. Orpheus encourages young people to embrace the challenges that come with it, comparing spiritual growth to resurrection after crucifixion. He urges them to stay true to their values, even when faced with hardships. As a final takeaway, Orpheus emphasizes persistence, urging listeners to commit to a cause greater than themselves and see their personal struggles in light of God's larger purpose. He also encourages church leaders to stay connected with cultural trends to remain relevant, sharing his online platforms like the Renaissance Church of Christ Facebook and YouTube pages, and his upcoming leadership training site, OJH Next Level Reagan closes by thanking Orpheus for his wisdom and encouraging listeners to follow the podcast and connect with her on social media. This episode offers rich insights on tradition, unity, race, ministry, and adaptability, making it valuable for both Gen Z and a broader audience.
