Welcome back Hit the Bottle with your host, Michael Wangbickler. They say, “You should never meet your heroes.” The people that you admire may disappoint you by not living up to your expectations when you encounter them in real life. The internet is full of horror stories about people meeting their celebrity idols and being crushed by the experience. Leadership comes at a price. While Mike has had the opportunity to meet his heroes (most of which are in the wine biz, naturally), it’s always been a dream come true. That was the case when he had the opportunity to sit down with Michael Mondavi late last year and chat about leadership in the beverage business. It’s an experience he won’t soon forget. The Mondavi name is synonymous with wine in the Napa Valley. The family has been truly instrumental in the ascendance of California wine over the past 100 years. For his part, Michael has been a leader and mentor to at least three generations of wine professionals. He’s been an idol of Mike’s for at least 20 years. So, you can imagine how geeked he was when Michael Mondavi agreed to be on the show. Leadership is one of those nebulous ideas that can be hard for some to grasp. The expression “born leader” is frequently bandied about, but we are of the opinion that leaders are made, not born. So, chatting with a true leader and hearing their perspective, is truly something special. This episode is precious to Mike, and we hope you find it equally valuable. Let’s get on with the show. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/htbpodcast/support

Michael shares his unique perspective in a conversation that's lighthearted but touches on some vital issues in the wine world and beyond: from natural, organic and biodynamic viticulture; labor shortages in an age when a legal, documented migrant workforce is scarce: the impact climate change is having on grape vines today; the changing role of the wine critic; to the timeless, refreshing taste of rose over ice. Stick around for the Q&A segment, when the team answers your question about where to start with old world wine.

For this special on-location episode of The Grape Nation, Sam Benrubi welcomes wine luminaries Rob Mondavi Jr. and Rick Rubel. Rob Mondavi, Jr is a fourth generation winemaker who has been part of the industry for over thirty years. He was raised on a vineyard in the Napa Valley and worked in a variety of roles at the family winery while growing up. He is an entrepreneur who started bike tour and a cigar importing businesses and has also worked at a major wine distributor. He spent time in sales and marketing for the Robert Mondavi Corporation but transitioned back into winemaking in 2004 after he and his parents and sister started the Michael Mondavi Family Estate. He took over duties as head winemaker in 2012 and focuses on green winemaking and modern practices under the Isabel Mondavi, Animo and “M” by Michael Mondavi labels. Rick Rubel began his career in wine at the ripe age of 21, speed tasting wines at England’s Glyndebourne Opera House—an establishment known for its fast fine dining. Tasting an average of 100 - 200 wines per night, Rubel’s curiosity grew with his palate. Upon returning to the states, he landed a job with the Unique Restaurant Corporation (now the Matt Prentice Restaurant Group), where he landed an apprenticeship under Madeline Triffon, the first female master sommelier in the United States. Rubel worked with Triffon for 10 years, honing his skills and together developing more than 14 restaurant beverage programs. Rubel is now the wine director at the Belmond Charleston Place and sommelier of the hotel’s Charleston Grill.

Without the name Mondavi Napa Valley would still be a world class wine producing region, but it certainly wouldn't be the same as it is today. In 1966, after the much publicized split with his brother, Robert Mondavi and his son Michael started the Robert Mondavi Winery. And the rest, as they say, is history. And what a history it is. After the family took the company public in 1994, then selling the winery to Constellation Brands in 2004, Michael Mondavi left the boardroom and returned to the vineyard when he purchased property on Atlas Peak. Today, Michael, along with his wife and children, continue the family tradition of making wine in Napa Valley. I sat down with Michael to talk about his family's colorful history and what that legacy brings to the wines he makes today.

It's composed of two riesling clones Geisenheim 110 and 239 and was harvested at 21 brix. Fermented and aged in stainless steel for six months, it's finished with residual sugar of 3.2 % and 11.6 % abv. It has a shy nose with a pleasant leesy aroma. Leesy is a term for the aroma you get from wine that is held in a container on its lees (dead yeast cells) for an extended period.  Where this wine really struts its stuff is on the palate. You'll find juicy white peach and pear flavors. It's off dry with that characteristic lemon, lime, tongue tingling acidity on the finish. A real crowd pleaser for sure.   575 cases $20

Four generations of passion and experience have come together to create The Mondavi Family Winery and their wines. Starting in 1919, Michael Mondavi’s grandfather, Cesare, was elected to find grapes and winemaking supplies for families to make wine legally during Prohibition. Thus, in Lodi, California, the Mondavi family began their foray into California winemaking. Cesare’s son, Robert, joined the family wine business while in high school. In 1966, Robert and his eldest son, Michael, founded the Robert Mondavi Winery, establishing themselves as innovators in winemaking, and accomplishing their goal of bringing California wines the world recognition they deserved. Michael made wines for the first eight harvests at Robert Mondavi Winery and then later took the helm of Sales and Marketing. Known as global emissaries of California wine, Robert and Michael have dedicated their lives to creating a fine wine culture in America. Today, with son Rob Mondavi, Jr. at the winemaking helm, Michael and the family continue to craft a collection of world-class wines at the Michael Mondavi Family Estate. Wondering what it takes to run one of the most accomplished wine companies in the world? Learn everything about wine in today’s program of Evolutionaries but were too afraid to ask! This program has been sponsored by Fairway Market.“If you live in your vineyard, you can make great wines.” [5:00] “People in the wine business have respect for the soil. The philosophy in Napa Valley is – we would rather police ourselves, than the government police us. We’re taking the proactive view to protect the environment and the wine industry for the future.” [14:20] “One of the beauties of the family and friends dining together is conversation. If people slow down, talk with each other, and have a wonderful meal, it can be helpful, and a great deal of fun.” [17:53] — The Mondavi Family on Evolutionaries

The legendary Mondavi Family joins Joe Campanale for a very special episode of In The Drink. Joe is in studio with Michael, Rob Jr., and Dina Mondavi who share stories and insights about their winemaking process, maintaining the family business and the special terroir of the Napa valley. Tune in as they taste three different wines on air – The 2010 Emblem Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, The M by Michael Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon and The Isabel Mondavi Chardonnay. Find out what plans are on the horizon for the historic family winery and how each of the Mondavi’s does everything they can to continue the traditions and consistency of quality that Robert Mondavi started! This program was sponsored by The International Culinary Center. “The original Chardonnay’s were made in large redwood or concrete tanks – they weren’t made in stainless steel or oak barrels. In the mid 70’s we got into oak and like anything at first we went too far. Many Chardonnay’s did not have balance – they literally fought food. I think now we’ve come back to where balance is important. You want the flavor of the grape, a kiss of the oak. You want it to be interesting and compliment the food, not overpower it.” [7:30] “Wine is supposed to cleanse the palate excite the taste buds and invite you to have another sip of the wine or more taste of the food.” [25:00] –Michael Mondavi on In the Drink “Growing up Mondavi was the only life I had so I have nothing to compare it to, but it has great perks. The downside is that when you call in sick everybody comes to bring you soup when you really just wanted the day off. It’s been a blessing to work in this family my favorite thing to do is come in and work with my brother and father.” [29:00] –Dina Mondavi on In the Drink
