We've got to start this week talking about that Auckland FC win on Saturday night. Did we not discuss on Friday's show the need for us in this country to be more ambitious for success? To have more confidence to back ourselves more and then a day later, just one day later, we have an example of exactly that. Now to be fair, obviously, this wasn't exactly us backing ourselves. It was an American billionaire Bill Foley backing us. But his attitude is the kind of attitude worth adopting. When he put his money into a football team in Auckland, he set them a goal of winning the A-League within three seasons. They did it in two. He did the same thing in Las Vegas with the team that he has there, he set them a goal of winning their competition in six seasons. They did it in six. Now of course, having heaps and heaps of money helps. If you're a football team, it helps to have the best of everything that money can buy. The best data, the best physio, the best premium accommodation, whatever it is. And we're going to find out just how much difference money really makes next year when the high salary cap that new teams get for the first two years disappears and they are on par with all the other clubs. But while I think money helps, I have a suspicion it's not the secret sauce that leads to Bill Foley constantly being successful. Because we've got myriad examples of money being thrown at things and them still failing. LIV Golf. The rugby league, the Rebel Rugby League, and that's just in the past year. I'd love to know what his secret sauce is. Is it getting the best coach? Is a coach more important than a team? Is there a formula to setting up a winning team? Is it the attitude of expecting success? Either way, when I stood there in that crowd on Saturday night in the minutes after the team won, actually just shocked, kind of speechless for a bit to think that they actually managed to pull it off. The thought occurred to me that this was good for Auckland. This is a city with high unemployment, grumpy about the past few years. Now a football team winning doesn't change that, right? But it is not a bad thing for a place like Auckland to score a win, to feel like it can be the best at something in Australasia. It's not bad to have all the free publicity in the Australian media market for our biggest city. It's not bad to get the kids really excited about a game and it is not bad to illustrate what can be done if you simply believe it can be done. Even if you're not into football, it's hard not to be excited about a local franchise winning the A-League final. You have to be a real Grinch not to get a smile on your face. Congratulations to all the players, Steve Corica, Nick Becker and the well-heeled who backed them. These guys have momentum. They've created a winning buzz. There are two things that leapt to mind as the AFC party bus snaked its way through Queen Street yesterday: 1. This is part of a wider story about the rise of football, which now boasts more kiwi players than rugby union. A big part of that is to do with Auckland. Rugby has an Auckland problem which football and league are exploiting. Unlike the Blues, the Warriors and Auckland FC regularly fill stadiums. It's not come out of nowhere. In 2014, a council survey found rugby was 20th on the list of sports played by Aucklanders. In 2016, of the 150,000 registered union players in NZ, just 40,000 came from this region. That was less than 3% of Aucklanders. Rugby is stronger in the provinces. But if getting young players on the field is the aim of the game, then Auckland is king. Same story in politics. You can't win the election if you lose Auckland, as the last lot found out back in 2023. 2. Fans don't really care if the players, coaches, and even owners (in Bill Foley), are Aucklanders, let alone Kiwis. They just care that it's A) football, and B) they're winning. In that order. Another lesson, perhaps, for other codes with sticky rules and criteria? In the end, it doesn't really matter which sport kids are playing, so long as they're playing something. A kid in sport is kid out of court. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
All hail AKLFC. The Auckland football side have gone one better than their inaugural season by booking a place in the A-League final. Arguably they have trumped last year's season already. Trumped as in surpassed, not as in the tangerine coloured, tiny handed narcissist. They've packed out Mt Smart Go Media Stadium for the final, which from tonight on will be known as The Go Media Port after the intense fan base the team has whipped up. They've put football on the lips of sports fans across the motu, they've created an energy around Australasian sport that Super Rugby must be crying over, a vitality that the Warriors have finally tapped into and The Big Bash, aahh, yeah, nah, not yet. This is not only a triumph for football, but a resounding celebration of the power of money. So it is a bit Trumpy, right? The team hit the ground running, with the flames at their feet, propelled by the required largesse of a billionaire. It has yet to be determined if titles can be bought here but following in the footsteps of many a hugely successful football team, the smell of an oily rag will not fuel any team on the road to the promised land. This is not a negative thought. This is steeped in the reality of professional sport. It's not title buying, it's arming your team with as much hi-tech ordinance as possible. The A-League salary cap is one thing, an archaic, creaky and vaguely efficient mechanism to ensure on-field parity, but the real financial flex comes with the ability to fund everything else. Well-resourced if you will. Staff, equipment, facilities. Although as chief payroll executive Bill Foley found out, much to his surprise (not ours), no amount of money can oil the wheels of Auckland city's stadium development vehicle. All of that aside, the game promises so much. Victory is the only acceptable outcome, but to not enjoy the fixture for whatever it brings, regardless of the result, is insane. Revel in it, roll in it like a pig in mud, cheer, laugh, scream. Have fun, because sport is far too important to take seriously. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Multi-club ownership groups have had a tough year in the eyes of many, with high profile cases around Crystal Palace & Lyon as well as Forest & Olympiacos showing the competitive risk of one owner or group having too much control over multiple entities. But, and it is a big but, this model can be a hugely valuable business and performance structure to apply to football.Tim Bezbatchenko is the President of Black Knight Football, the group who owns or has minority ownership in multiple clubs including Bournemouth, Hibernian, and Lorient in France to name a few. It's an amazing time to be having this chat with Tim due the success Bournemouth are achieving this season, miraculously after another summer of selling some of their best players. This is an insight into how they have built a player trading model to offset the financial challenges of having an 11,000 seater stadium, the plans to develop infrastructure, the value of shared intelligence and analytics across multiple clubs, and most importantly how you protect the badge of each team so they do not just become feeders to the premium asset in the group. This is a proper look at the MCO model from someone who firmly believes that collective value can breed the best business in football. Former AFC Bournemouth owner Jeff Mostyn and his daughter Janine, MD of search firm Huckleberry Sport, are the guests on this week's Leaders Worth Knowing. The Mostyns are two of the best networked people in the UK sports industry, and ahead of the release of Jeff's new book, The Chairman: The Man who Saved AFC Bournemouth, they visited the Leaders studio to reflect on a (very expensive!) fairytale journey. Having made a success of a financial advisory practice focused on the Armed Forces, Jeff began his association with AFC Bournemouth in 2006. At the time, the club was in the third tier of English football, saddled with debt and poorly run. Over the course of the next 16 years, Jeff took the club through administration, to the brink of extinction, via a trip to the very bottom of the English professional pyramid, before establishing the club as a force in the Premier League. Bill Foley's consortium, Black Knight Football Club, bought the club in 2022. Janine has led sport and entertainment talent firm Huckleberry Sport since 2017, and works with the likes of Premier League football clubs, Formula 1 racing teams, media and broadcast production companies, business consulting services and agencies and world-renowned gaming and entertainment providers.

Confusion over the billionaire-backed Auckland Arena proposal being withdrawn from options for Western Springs. Businesswoman Anna Mowbray, her husband and former All Black Ali Williams, and Auckland FC owner Bill Foley withdrew their 12,500 seat proposal, which wouldn't have cost ratepayers a cent. It follows news Aucklanders don't have a clear preference on an option for the site. The group cites unique challenges. After a record-breaking season for Andoni Iraola's Bournemouth, the brutal reality of being a small fish in a big pond is now being laid bare with the departures of some key Cherries' figureheads. Whilst it is public knowledge that Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez and Kepa will not be at Vitality Stadium next season, rumour has it that Illia Zabarnyi could follow... It's a bittersweet situation - Bournemouth, as a club, is in its best ever moment, but the startling truth is that this success only serves to become the catalyst for a frustrating reality - the constant drain of top talent. While it's a testament to the club's excellent management and player development, it also necessitates a constant state of transition - meaning that Bill Foley's "always advance" mantra will be tested to the limit. Last year, the pundits has the knives out as Bill Foley made a managerial switch which was deemed scandalous and ludicrous. Since then, after a shaky start where players adopted a new style, Cherries have scored more, accrued more points, conceded fewer, and are three points from European football. Should more respect be put on Andoni's name from the people that were keen to call it an accident waiting to happen? Thank you to everyone who has contributed to all our platforms. How does he feel about it now? There's discussion on possible transfer targets for GW22, what we can learn from the week of domestic Cup games and AFCON before the next FPL deadline and what Mo Salah's injury means to our plans and when we can expect The Egyptian King to play again for Liverpool. Hello Rank Squad! We're back with some brand new fun - and this week Dean and Jack are looking through some of the storylines that are throwing the standard order of things out of the window ahead of this transfer window. We take a look at the pull of the Saudi Pro League, the impact of Leo Messi to MLS, PSG's superstar exodus and Manchester United's ownership takeover to see what kind of knock-on effect they might have on the summer. There's also a segment on Bournemouth's decision to replace Gary O'Neil with Andoni Iraola, and why taking a risk on the former Rayo Vallecano manager might well be a really smart move from Cherries' owner Bill Foley. Finally, we introduce a new section, where we're asking the Rank Squad for their hot takes and assessing them one by one in terms of how good a shout they are, and how off-the-wall they might be. It's Ranks! If you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including quickfire transfer episodes all summer and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
The grind of the NHL season comes to an end with the Vegas Golden Knights being crowned champions. As always, the litany of injuries that hockey players endure in the playoffs comes to surface once the season ends; for the Florida Panthers the list was a long one. Ray & Dregs lead things off with their thoughts on Paul Maurice's post-game comments, and the improbable run for his Panthers. In Headlines, the guys discuss a dominant Vegas Golden Knights Stanley Cup run to fulfill owner Bill Foley's 6-year prophecy. The guys reflect on the ‘big swing' approach that management had from Day 1 in Las Vegas. Ray remarks that the Knights were NOT gifted a cup-winning roster, but does give credence to the ‘blank slate' that the Knights started with as opposed to other teams in the NHL. Plus, the journey of Jack Eichel: His recovery from neck surgery, to being a key factor in the Golden Knights win. Ray provides a player perspective on just how hard it is to win the cup, the folklore behind the trophy itself, and what it meant to even see the cup in person for the first time. In other NHL news, the sale of the Ottawa Senators and uncertainty around the direction of the team, the hiring of first-time NHL Head Coach Ryan Huska in Calgary, and more! Kris Abbott is away on Betano business, so the guys have a chat on their second-favourite sport, golf! Favourites ahead of the US Open and the many ways to bet the tournament are discussed. Dregs talks his golf pool, and identifies a dark-horse candidate in Viktor Hovland. Plus, the historic win by Nick Taylor at the Canadian Open, and Ray's experience playing with the BC golfer. The guys answer YOUR questions on the pod every week in Ask Ray & Dregs Anything. This week, listeners asked about the Cole Caufield contract and Dubois rumours in Montreal, stories of Ray & Dregs' first ‘big league' experiences, and what it would take to trade Mitch Marner, or one of the Leafs' core players.
