Lorraine has been creating with fiber since she was a young girl. As a child she would while away the hours sewing, crocheting, and working with crewelwork. She learned to sew garments at the side of her mother and paternal grandmother who were both gifted seamstress'. She is a self-taught artist. She began quilting in 1997 and immediately was intrigued with the design elements of the quilt. Thus, began her exploration of color, repetition, design, and texture. Soon Lorraine began to experiment with a more contemporary approach to textiles and developed her own artistic voice. Her creative roots are firmly embedded in the traditional needle arts and this is reflected in her current body of work. Inspired by her Faith, her travels and the natural world, she employs layers of both hand and machine stitches together with various surface design techniques. This unique approach allows her to successfully captures the depth, color, contrast, and texture of her subject matter. Since 1993 Lorraine had lived in the Ithaca area of the Finger Lakes Region in Central New York until 2019 when she relocated to The Villages, Florida. She recently retired from a career in nursing. She enjoys the support of her husband, their children, and grandchildren. Lorraine is an exhibiting textile artist and has won several awards for her fiber art.She owns and operates The Tangled Thread, a longarm quilting business; gives presentations and teaches classes focused on mixed media and stitched art. These days, she dedicates her energy to facilitating a group of twenty-five local artists, who meet twice a month to share and explore their common love for textile art. Holidays and Dementia Family Life's "Inside Out" podcast with Martha Manikas-Foster If someone you love is living with dementia, simplifying how you celebrate the holidays could create a more enjoyable time for everyone. Phil Shippers of the Rochester and Finger Lakes chapter of the Alzheimer's Association offers practical help in this Inside Out news podcast. One in ten older Americans lives with dementia. Maybe this includes people you love. If so, being flexible and even making a few changes to the way you celebrate the holidays could help everyone feel more comfortable around the table this year. “We have to realize that due to the changes in the brain, the person is trying to interpret their environment. So, being part of a social event may be upsetting or confusing or stressful,” says Phil Shippers, program director for the Rochester & Finger Lakes Region of the Alzheimer's Association. “I think the biggest thing is to be flexible, and perhaps to change our expectations,” he says. “Maybe we try new things. And we want to do this to reduce commotion, to reduce noise and activity, to make the person living with dementia feel more comfortable.” Even if we're not organizing the gathering, Shippers says there are practical things we can do to help our loved one living with dementia enjoy the time together. “One of the suggestions that we make is that when people approach the person living with Alzheimer's or dementia, that they introduce themselves,” he says. “And it doesn't have to be formal or stuffy. You can just make light of it, saying, ‘Oh, this is your favorite grandson Patrick.'” We want to preserve each person's dignity and demonstrate our love. Along the way, Shippers points out, we will make mistakes. “Give yourself some grace as well,” he says. “And just be as positive and really enjoy the moment as much as you can.” Listen to our Inside Out podcast, where Phil Shippers lists a number of practical ways to make gatherings more comfortable. For additional help, the Alzheimer's Association offers support and resources 24/7 through its Help Line at 800-272-3900. You can also contact the Alzheimer's Association at Alz.org. That website offers six recommendations for households where the attendees include someone  who is dealing with these types of memory loss and limitations.       #InsideOut 11/13/2024

On this episode of Destination on the Left, Rob Holmes, Founder of GLP Films shares his experience and insights on sustainable tourism. We discuss how you can impact sustainability through storytelling, and Rob shares several components of storytelling and why it must focus on people at the ground level and be story-driven, not sales-driven. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Why storytelling and sustainability are integral to the tourism industry What strategic approach Rob uses for authentic and engaging storytelling in destination marketing How sustainability has evolved as a term and its significance in tourism Why targeting responsible travelers through storytelling can make a meaningful impact on sustaining a place Some of the sustainable travel campaigns Rob's team has worked on, including sustainability in the Finger Lakes Region, and rewilding in Chile How education in sustainability and involving various stakeholders are crucial for the industry's success How the Tourism Sector Can Thrive with Sustainability and Meaningful Narratives We discuss the concept of rewilding—integrating natural, wild elements back into ecosystems, and how incorporating conservation and biodiversity into a destination enriches not just the environment but increases the opportunities for visitors. Rob digs into how the tourism industry can tap into nature-focused tourism, make environmental gains, and improve economic resilience by adopting greener practices. The Power of Storytelling in Tourism We go deep into the significance of compelling storytelling. Rob shares why purpose, story arc, characters, and landscape are some of the key components of a great story, whether it's in a film or a marketing campaign. He describes why authenticity is pivotal and why he believes that stories driven by passion—rather than sales and marketing objectives—enhances sustainable tourism initiatives. Sharing memorable and emotionally resonant stories does more than attract tourists; it fosters a deeper connection to the destination and its people. When crafted well, these stories invigorate both local charm and environmental consciousness, leading to lasting impressions and repeat visitors. Real-world Applications Rob leaves us with actionable insights learned from several campaigns his company has spearheaded. In the Finger Lakes region, a two-year campaign aims to reposition this destination as a sustainable outdoor recreation hotspot. By highlighting local culture and nature-centric activities, the campaign seeks to draw responsible outdoor travelers. Another campaign in Chile promotes community tourism, encouraging travelers to immerse themselves in local life and support the community economically. Rob's examples underscore how targeted, authentic storytelling can drive sustainable tourism while benefiting the local community. Nature Calls: Conversations from the Hudson Valley

Episode 127: Native Lawns Have you ever given serious consideration of the limited value of traditional suburban lawns? Sure, they add a certain beauty to the landscape, but is there a better way to incorporate more native plantings to our lawns? Are their native lawns that could become alternatives to the typical field of turf grass that creates a monoculture that is not supporting of pollinators? Todd Bittner, Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, joins the Nature Calls: Conversations from the Hudson Valley podcast to share his perspective on more environmentally sustainable Native Lawns. As the Director of Natural Areas for the Cornell Botanic Gardens and a Lecturer in the Department of Horticulture at Cornell University as well as today's guest, Todd Bittner furthers our understanding of natural systems, environmental sustainability, and natural resource conservation, management, and use. The Cornell Botanic Garden's natural areas program is responsible for the protection and management of a system of preserves spanning nearly 3,600 acres across 40 natural areas. As part of Cornell's educational mission, the natural areas include examples of the natural community plants and the rarest plant habitats in the New York's central Finger Lakes Region. The holdings include one-third of Cornell's iconic campus landscape, including two massive gorges, scenic Beebe Lake, and a renowned wildflower garden. Todd leads the organization's native biodiversity conservation efforts, while facilitating compatible educational, research, and recreational uses across these outdoor classrooms.  Native Lawns, or lawn alternatives, are a designed plant community that, when compared to traditional turf grass lawns, require minimal mowing and watering, no pesticides and fertilizers, yet more biodiversity to support pollinators and other invertebrates. In the research being conducted by Todd Bittner, the goal of the native lawn was to be aesthetic, able to handle a moderate amount of trampling, and require minimal hand weeding as well as to address the environmental objectives (minimal watering, mowing, chemical supplements, etc.). There was also a desire for native plants to comprise at least 85 percent of the land area. Plant species were selected that are suitable for both full sun and shady as well as wet and dry conditions Danthonia spicata and Danthonia compressa (poverty oat grass) are dominant in the planting. Penstemon hirsutus is also widely planted. Twenty nine native species have established spontaneously from the adjoining natural area or seedbank, including a number of violet species, several woodland asters including calico, heart-leaved, and frost asters, and Lobelia siphilitica, or great blue lobelia, which is a very attractive valuable pollinator species. Tune into this episode to hear what has been learned over the last 15 years in moving towards a more environmentally sustainable native lawn.  Hosts: Tim Kennelty and Jean Thomas  Guest: Todd Bittner  Photo by: Cornell University CALS  Production Support: Linda Aydlett, Deven Connelly, Teresa Golden, Xandra Powers, Annie Scibienski

Dr. Haines-Eitzen was born in Jerusalem and grew up in Nazareth. Exploring the Negev and Sinai deserts in her formative years has shaped her interest in deserts and solitude. She now divides her time between the lush Finger Lakes Region of New York State and the high desert of Southeastern Arizona. The Claw's Corner With Rich Cyr

Rich "The Claw" Cyr welcomes musician Julia Poorman on this episode of The Claw's Corner! Singer/songwriter Julia Poorman released her newest single "Runaway Ship" to all major platforms. The lyrics and music were written by Julia Poorman with music and production by Danny Roselle. The single was produced, engineered and mixed by Danny Roselle at Rosedome Studios. It was mastered by Michael Fossenkemper. "Runaway Ship embodies both the excitement and unstoppable feeling of new romance while also acknowledging the beauty in a love that is chosen over and over again despite the hardships it may face," says Julia. Writing songs has always been second nature to Julia. As a young girl living in New York's Finger Lakes Region, her little poems could be found stuffed in her nightstand expectantly waiting for melodies to bring them to life. As soon as she'd pick up the paper, the music would come flowing out and a song would be born. Throughout her youth, music served as a reliable and cathartic outlet for Julia. To her, it's an entire dimension filled with comradery, boundless expression, and healing. As a young adult, Julia took a brief step back from her musical endeavors to help build a business and life with her fiance. Navigating the world as an entrepreneur brought many rewarding opportunities for growth and unforgettable experiences, but she was left feeling a void in her creative nature. In 2021, Julia unexpectedly lost her father. One of the last text messages he sent her was a photo of him listening to her original self-titled EP from 2012. She knew she needed to get back to her roots to begin to heal. Music became a necessary therapy again, and the melodies and lyrics just didn't stop. Julia now feels the importance of creating music that puts people in their own flow state, a vibrational catalyst for self-exploration and healing. Her passion reclaimed; she feels as though this is just the beginning. Julia released her single "Already Got It" in 2022. It's something we don't like to talk about. It's something we don't even like to think about. But the reality is 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys experience some sort of child sexual abuse. It's usually perpetrated by someone the child knows. Those are the stats from the CDC. Those numbers are likely under-reported, because often times abuse is kept secret. Faith Ingraham has lived with that secret most of her life. She grew up in the church, as a pastor's kid and was repeatedly abused by her father. Her mother became aware of the abuse. But it remained in the dark for the rest of the family, and for the church. Now, Faith and her husband, Dale teach churches how to respond biblically. My guest for this episode is Eric Shatt. With his wife and partner Deva, Eric is the owner of Redbyrd Orchard Cider in the Finger Lakes Region of NY. I love that Deva and Eric put the orchard first in their name and in their philosophy of cider making. In fact, Eric is an apple breeder and preservationist. He grows over 150 varieties of apples in his 4-acre orchard and is cultivating trees propagated from the wild and then crossed with others. He also makes some unique and delicious cider. Eric tells us how all that diversity in the orchard provides reinforcements against the unpredictable nature of, um, nature, and how it can also provide consistency to the cider. He gives us an intro to grafting, and discusses his unique approach to making cider, as well as his desire to promote freedom of technique and experimentation in the cellar. Redbyrd has been certified biodynamic for years, but Eric and I discuss how he came to be aware of biodynamics' troubling origins and the beliefs of Rudolf Steiner. While Eric is drawn to the spiritual connections in farming that biodynamics brings attention to, we discuss why its history has caused he and Deva to question whether it is something they'll continue to support via certification. This is a succulent conversation on many levels because of Eric's thoughtfulness and curiosity about the many unknowns that are part of farming and making wine in our little corner of the cosmos. https://redbyrdorchardcider.com/ Sponsor: https://www.centralaswine.com/

Being able to tailor your elevator pitch, to speak, to the needs of the operator shows that you're listening, that you know the resources you have around you, and who you can partner with to provide a unique experience is a crucial advantage of putting work into building genuine, long-standing relationships.
