The Australian comics folio website has just been launched and it's a treasure trove of stories, information, interviews, essays, and so much more on Australian comics, Australian comics creators and the Australian comics community at large.In this episode we have a chat with two of the key researchers involved in the project. The Lead Investigator for the project was Elizabeth MacFarlane, who is a writer and Associate Professor in Creative Writing at the University of Melbourne where she teaches Graphic Narratives and Critical-Creative Writing Practices. Gabriel Clark is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Design at the University of Technology Sydney and a creative producer. He was one of the chief investigators in the project.This conversation is not directly about libraries and comics librarianship, but I think it's a very valuable conversation about the Australian comics community. We've got enormous talent in Australia and I feel like comics by Australian creators often go under the radar. This episode features a conversation with award-winning investigative climate journalist, Amy Westervelt. It was recorded in June 2025.Amy has been on the climate beat for more than 20 years, reporting for a wide range of outlets including Inside Climate News, The Washington Post, The Guardian, The Nation, The Intercept, NPR, and many more. In the past 10 years, Amy has worked extensively in the audio realm, most notably with Drilled, a true crime podcast about climate denial.What was planned to be a single limited-run audio series was an absolute hit, and has now grown into an ongoing investigative reporting project digging into the various forces obstructing action on climate.Despite her successes in audio though, Amy continues to write regularly for a wide range of publications. The agricultural industry faces unprecedented challenges, from shifting commodity markets to labor shortages and automation. In a recent AgNet News Hour interview, Nick Foglio of Foglio Commodities shared timely insights into hay markets, wine trends, raisin and nut production, and what California growers must do to stay competitive. Hay and Dairy Market Trends Foglio opened with a look at the 2025 hay market, where soft commodity prices and oversupply have shaped the season. Favorable canola and soybean meal pricing allowed dairies to supplement feed at reduced costs, while wet winters added cheaper dry-land feed, softening the market further. The first half of the year saw resistance due to imported hay inventory, but the second half required price corrections and higher volume movement. One bright spot was dry cow alfalfa, which outperformed 2024 thanks to less low-quality weed hay available. With milk prices softening and exportable inventory staying in-state, Folio expects continued pressure on hay pricing going into winter. Wine Market Shifts Alcohol consumption continues to decline, particularly among older drinkers and younger consumers who are increasingly health-focused or shifting toward cannabis alternatives. Foglio sees single-serve packaging as a strong opportunity for drawing new wine consumers by reducing the commitment of a full bottle. His advice for new wine drinkers: Choose California wines for quality and local support Explore flavors to identify their preferred white or red Visit local wineries for tasting and education For the wine market to grow, Foglio says the industry must shed its elitist reputation and present wine as casual, accessible, and versatile for everyday dining and gatherings. Raisins, Almonds, and Pistachios: Vertical Integration Required Discussing raisins and permanent crops, Foglio stresses that the future belongs to vertically integrated operations. Modern, profitable raisin production now requires: Growing one's own fruit Owning and maintaining equipment Controlling storage and processing Managing direct-to-retail sales Without this structure, staying competitive becomes difficult. Foglio highlights Sun-Maid and National Raisin as examples of operations thriving through innovation and strong marketing. Almonds and pistachios remain profitable markets, but Foglio warns that overplanting could soften pricing. Growers must carefully assess whether to maintain current orchards, replant, or diversify into alternative crops based on return-on-investment outlooks. Labor, Automation, and Rising Costs Labor remains a top pressure point. With California's minimum wage increasing, more farms are turning to automation and mechanization. But Folio warns that growers must evaluate ROI carefully: expensive tech with a short lifespan—much like wind turbine investments—may not justify its cost. Growers must make immediate, ROI-positive decisions, balancing labor shortages with the need for efficiency and long-term operational sustainability. Managing Change in Agriculture Foglio's closing message is clear: agriculture is at a crossroads. Success in today's environment requires: Flexible sourcing and pricing in soft hay markets More approachable marketing to grow the wine industry Strong vertical integration for raisins, almonds, and pistachios Careful, ROI-driven adoption of automation Growers who adapt, innovate, and invest wisely will be best positioned to meet the evolving challenges of California agriculture.

Nous sommes le 1er décembre 1955, à Montgomery, en Alabama. Après avoir terminé sa journée de travail, Rosa Parks, âgée de quarante-deux ans, monte à bord d'un bus. Elle s'installe dans la section du milieu, dans une rangée occupée par d'autres passagers noirs, comme elle. Elle reconnaît le chauffeur, James Blake, celui-là même qui l'avait expulsée du véhicule douze ans plus tôt. Après plusieurs arrêts, les sièges sont tous occupés, un homme blanc se retrouve debout. Le chauffeur ordonne alors aux quatre passagers noirs de la rangée de Rosa de céder leurs places. Toutes et tous se lèvent … sauf Rosa Parks. James Blake insiste, elle dit clairement « Non ». Fatiguée, confiera-t-elle plus tard, d'être tout le temps poussée à bout par les mauvais traitements. Les policiers, alertés, arrivent sur les lieux et l'arrêtent. Le geste de Rosa Parks va déclencher le boycott des bus de Montgomery et constituer un tournant dans la lutte pour l'égalité, contre la ségrégation. En réalité, son acte de protestation, en ce 1er décembre 1955, plonge ses racines dans son enfance : Rosa Parks s'est engagée dès son plus jeune âge dans le mouvement des droits civiques. Dans son dernier livre, l'écrivaine voyageuse française Lucie Azéma convoque l'utopie et les ailleurs, réels ou imaginaires, pour dire le besoin que nous avons tous et toutes de rêver à demain et à ailleurs.  Après avoir livré une réjouissante et salutaire analyse féministe du voyage dans son premier livre «Les femmes aussi sont du voyage», après être partie ensuite sur les multiples routes du thé dans son second ouvrage «L'usage du thé. Une histoire sensible du bout du monde», Lucie Azéma a décidé de nous emmener ailleurs.  «Nous avons besoin d'un ailleurs qui n'existe pas» : c'est le titre de son dernier essai, érudit mais très didactique qui vient puiser, comme à chaque fois avec l'écrivaine nomade, dans la littérature de voyage et ses figures imposées pour mieux les questionner, les déconstruire, voire les réenchanter. «Réenchanter le voyage», c'est d'ailleurs le sous-titre de ce livre aux allures de manifeste pour tous les coureurs d'horizons, mangeurs de ciel, brûleurs de route, qui enfants, ont rêvé sur les cartes ou lignes de crête, pour mieux se lancer dans le vaste monde, dans des ailleurs réels ou rêvés.   De l'Atlantide à l'île d'Utopie, de l'Eldorado à Katmandou, de cités idéales en paradis perdus, Lucie Azéma tisse des réflexions personnelles sur sa vie de femme voyageuse et son rapport au monde à une trame plus collective, celle des rêves de ses congénères occidentaux qui n'ont eu de cesse de projeter des ailleurs, de les chercher, de les inventer. L'autrice revient aussi longuement sur les années 60-70, quand toute une jeunesse occidentale, en quête d'idéal et de vie libre sur la route, s'est lancée sur le «Hippie Trail» ou «Route des Indes», d'Istanbul à Katmandou. Meet two more honorees of the Folio: awards named to the Hall of Fame, in this "two-fer" episode on Doug Olson and David Adler, both of whom have gone from being presidents of publishing companies to reinventing themselves...and parts of the industry. First up: Doug Olson. Doug went from a career in the tech side to the publishing side, ultimately running Meredith Magazines (think: "Time," "People," "Better Homes & Gardens"...) to NOW hangin' with the digital natives doing bling-meets-social media, as Co-CEO of "Bomb Party," with its TikTok-famous jewelry reveals! Bet you didn't see THAT coming. Creating Partnerships He discusses the evolution of Meredith, its major acquisitions, the partnership he headed with Walmart, and how Meredith navigated its own transition -- adding digital to print media. "Reveals" on TikTok Doug also describes his transition to #BombParty, a thriving and unique jewelry company that uses social media to engage customers.    Then there's David Adler. I cannot even keep track of all the ways David has reinvented himself: from launching a magazine on DC society back in the 70s, which he sold 10 years later for a handy profit -- and is now turning those archival images into songs and content! I kid you not. But wait, there's more. He helmed big PR shops, but is perhaps best know for founding one of the best magazines on events, called "BizBash." And now? SO MUCH -- from recently launching an online events mag, "GatheringPoint.news" to yet another startup. gatheringoint.news He highlights how he is an unabashed #AI acolyte and explains how it has revolutionized his latest ventures, supporting creative storytelling and increased efficiency. But David is also stopping to smell "The Roses", making the most of his author father's legacy by helping enable that current box office hit! from "The Roses" Like roses themselves, these guests exemplify the concept of 'perennials,' described by David as individuals who continuously evolve and remain curious, regardless of generational labels.
