Episode #30 Notes: Thirty! Tamales! And Lube! Recorded: 12/12/18 Length: 37:06 Bex, Jake, and Sean get together and reflect on 30 episodes and disscuss what will be coming in the future, in addition to thanking everyone for the support. Instead of catching up on current events, they caught up on life and how they feel this close to the holidays. The cost of having a child came up and started a conversation about an article, stating that there are many predatory practices in hospitals that people are unaware of. Bex coming clean about not knowing how to ride the Metro, and other St. Louis issues. Thoughts on the Golden Globe nominated show The Good Place, and Jameela Jamil's I Weigh campaign. Shout out to Kay of Master Bait'N for sending us Uberlube. Sean is excited to go to Wrestlemania, and asks the rest of the hosts to explain the best performance they have ever seen. Sesame Street is introducing a Homeless Character, so thoughts were discussed on that topic. Closing out the episode discussing the tamales Bex made and a cross promo for NRI Woman. Tune in. There’s so much to talk about with this week’s guest, Ninorah Fernandes-Brookshire and I’m delighted to have her on the show. Nino is the co-founder of NRI Women, a platform supporting non-resident Indian women across the world. It has now grown to be a community of over 3,000 women living in a multitude of countries. You’ll hear Nino talking in this episode about how Indians traditionally "do not like to air their dirty laundry in public" as she puts it, but moving internationally away from strong family and community connections is HARD, and the organisation aims to support and nurture women through the transition and challenges they may face. Earlier this year Nino and her co-founder and friend Bettina started the NRI Woman podcast, showcasing the stories of Indian women abroad and telling their stories to a wider audience. Nino also co-founded the Naya Jeevan foundation with her husband Edward, an NGO that partners and supports the work of the Rescue Foundation, a multi-award winning charity based in Mumbai that fights human trafficking of girls into prostitution. The Rescue Foundation, led by an engaging and determined woman named Mrs. Triveni, a former investigative journalist, has so far rescued over 5,000 girls from prostitution all over India, pursuing prosecution for their pimps and captors, and rehabilitating these girls through education, healthcare and counselling. Numbers are hard to gather accurately but NGOs estimate that somewhere between 20 and 65 million Indians are trafficked year. Men, women and children are trafficked for diverse reasons but the abduction of girls and their brutal forcing into prostitution is a major problem. NinO has lived around the world and has a wealth of stories about her fundraising by walking a frozen river in -25C conditions, running a marathon in someone else's shoes (literally), her business, Nindi Bindis and her passion for tribal belly dancing. This is a varied and ranging conversation that I really enjoyed so have a listen now! Karina Calver is a survivor of incest. She shares her story of enduring rape and how she has turned her life around to become the woman she is today. The silence that surrounds incest survivors can make them feel isolated, and Karina hopes by sharing her story others will know they are not alone. Survivors are all around us, among our friends, at school, at work, places of worship and it's likely we don't know they are survivors. The taboo around the subject makes it hard for them to share their stories and for others to understand the impact this can have. Karina wants to bring the conversation out in the open where nothing is a taboo anymore so that victims do not need to be scared to speak their truth, fear seeming inadequate and not being an equal. She wants others to know that they are capable of building a life of their choice filled with love, happiness and surrounded by people who are willing to help every step of the way. She is our NRI Woman and this is her story! Until next time keep learning, keep inspiring and be kind. Our guest today Sheetal Mulani shares her story of rebuilding her life after her son Mohit passed away at the age of 21. The loss of a child regardless of age is one of the most devastating experiences a parent can face. One is never going to stop feeling the loss, and that gap is never going to be replaced. Sheetal and her family have had to find a way to love and care for each other so their family can survive despite missing a very precious part. Mohit was diagnosed with anxiety and ADHD while he was away at university and put on medication, which Sheetal believes changed the person Mohit was. Sonia Anand believes stillness is the key to restoring the balance within ourselves and on a larger scale the world. She thinks when the organic beauty of our soul evolves through gentle practices we automatically begin to radiate love health and positivity to the universe. Sonia was like most of us, wearing many hats at the same time. From raising her young kids, managing the home to juggling her corporate job, Sonia felt like she was being pulled in ten different directions at the same time. This overly scheduled and hard life left her feeling physically exhausted most of the time. It reached a point where she was so stressed with the daily routine that she thought she couldn't take it anymore. It was at this point she was diagnosed with depression. She sought the necessary treatment needed to help her get on track, but she also knew she needed something more. She decided to explore Yoga to help her cope with the depression. That decision changed the course of her life. She eventually went on to give up her corporate career and decided to pursue life as a Yoga teacher and Acharya or spiritual leader. She hasn't looked back since. She has found a connection with her inner-self through yoga, meditation and stillness and she hopes that in sharing the skills she learnt, will help others connect with themselves. She is our NRI Woman, and this is her story. Until next time, keep learning, keep inspiring and be kind!
