In this episode of the Eccles Business Buzz podcast, host Francis Johnson welcomes Ruchi Watson, Managing Director of the Goff Strategic Leadership Institute, and Maya Jolley, Director of Student Experience and Marketing and Communications at Goff.Together they discuss the importance of experiential learning in the student experience at the David Eccles School of Business. They delve into how hands-on learning opportunities set students up for post-graduation success, and how the Goff institute can assist students to land and succeed in their first internships. The episode explores diverse examples of practical learning, from internships to multidisciplinary team projects, and discusses the impact of strategic leadership in student development. With the elevation of the Goff Strategic Leadership Institute, these programs aim to extend their reach across campus and beyond, fostering a mindset of continuous growth and value creation among students.Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University fm.Episode Quotes:The Goff Institute provides unique experiential learning that goes beyond the classroom.[02:44] There's so many different methods of engaging in experiential learning. I think one thing that we try and really do here at Goff is provide that self-reflection for those students to say, “Hey, you're here on this campus, and there are more opportunities than maybe you even realize that you're already engaging in to practice and build your resume and build your life skills and learn more about yourself so that you can be better set up for success after graduation.”On building students' confidence through experiential learning.[05:33] 51% of Gen Z graduates are not feeling prepared to enter the workforce right now. So, a lot of what we're doing is trying to bolster that so that we can say, "You're growing in confidence, you're getting these experiences here so that when you go into the workforce, you really know already a little bit of what you're good at, what to expect, and then also can really succeed in your future careers."Impactful experiences that students won't find anywhere else but at Eccles School.[10:55] People don't understand necessarily, if I go to a classroom and I learn something, is that valuable? When you pair what you learn with how you do things, then that really is magical. And experiential learning takes you to that place of taking what you know and figuring what to do with it to make it valuable. And so, as we think about that, that is really game changing and something that isn't necessarily happening everywhere. It's really unique to the Eccles School to have experiential learning not only baked in to the core required classes, but a student who's interested in impact investing can go do something at the Sorenson Impact Institute. A student that's interested in, gosh, policy could go work at the Gardner Policy Institute. We have a number of different experiences that you really cannot find anywhere else that are right here at the Eccles School. And that makes us really differentiated and something that, to be honest, not only do we not see in other places, but as we've worked with consultants and other folks that have come in to evaluate what we do, they've said they're not seeing it elsewhere, either. So, it's really exciting to talk about the things that we're doing because you're really not going to find it at other institutions the way that we have it here.Maya discusses how experiential learning pairs well with leadership training. [17:06] I think really blending the leadership education with teaching the how and learning to do is so key and because our programs are multidisciplinary, you're getting engineering students working next to psychology students, working next to finance students to really tackle these huge strategic challenges that are faced by our community partners, which might be a one person startup all the way up to a multi-billion dollar company. So they're working together to tackle these truly, really amazing and nitty gritty and ambiguous challenges. And that is the real world, right? We're not going to leave college and be working on our own. I mean, sure there are certainly silos in the real world, but our own academic silos, we're prepping these students to be able to speak across disciplines to be able to understand the value of acknowledging our own strengths and then acknowledging the strengths of our team members. Show Links:Ruchi Watson | David Eccles School of BusinessRuchi Watson | WebsiteRuchi Watson | LinkedInMaya Jolley | David Eccles School of BusinessMaya Jolley | LinkedInGoff Strategic Leadership Institute | David Eccles School of BusinessDavid Eccles School of Business (@ubusiness) | InstagramUndergraduate Scholars ProgramsRising Business LeadersEccles Alumni Network (@ecclesalumni) | Instagram Eccles Experience Magazine

Ruchi starts by sharing a story about how she thought a Prada purse would make her happy when she was on Wall Street. We are searching for external validation, but it really comes down to the work we do internally. Ruchi shares about the success and corporate ladder climbing she did early on, and how hollow it really felt. After hiring a coach, she found her calling as a “financial therapist.” It was learning about the 3 pillars that changed everything for Ruchi: well-being, spirituality, and relationships. Well-being means asking the question, what brings you joy? Budget time and money for those things! A key point is to always expand your comfort zone. A huge part of the spirituality pillar is to pay attention to more of your 60,000 thoughts per day. Use the RIR method, recognize the thoughts, interrupt them when they're negative, and reframe them positively. Both Lauren and Ruchi share real examples of the RIR method in their own lives. As for the final pillar, relationships, ask yourself when you're at your best, who are you with? Not everyone is meant to be in our lives forever. Keep in mind how you want to feel every day. Be clear about what you want your life to be like in one year. If you liked this episode, you'll also like episode 31: Financial Planning for Women and 118: Friends, FOMO, and Finances. Hey, good morning Harmony. I'm so glad that you guys are joining me. In light of having actual in-person church. I'm going to do a quick devotional online for us. I was thinking recently Jenny and I were getting ready for bed and she came to me and she said I just, I just have something to tell you. And you know in your marriage when your wife says something like that you're like, what did I do? Did I leave the underwear on the floor again? And instead of it being that it was something really sweet. She said, you used to come to at night before we go to bed and you would give me a good night kiss and you don't do that anymore. And I thought about it and I was like, yeah, I haven't done that for a long time. That was like a long time ago. And I said, baby, I'm so sorry, I haven't been doing that. And then it hit me. Do you know the reason I stopped giving my wife a good night's kiss? It was this stupid thing. Does anybody have one of these? It was a CPAP like I turned into Darth Vader every night. And so every night we would go to sleep and I would just put on the mask, turn into Darth Vader and I'd Roll over and go to sleep. And I stopped giving my wife a good night kiss. It reminds me of our relationship with Jesus and something that Jesus told the church in the city of Ephesus a long time ago, thousands of years ago, in the Book of Revelation. He's speaking to the Apostle John, and he says these words to the church in Ephesus. I want you to listen to this. He says this, but here's something I hold against you. You have turned away from the love you had at first. Jesus looked at this church in Ephesus, and he said, when you guys first fell in love with me, there was something about that love that was changing who you were. It was making who you were. And he says you have turned away from the love you had at first. And then he says this. Think about how far you've fallen. Think about how far you've fallen. Turn, Listen. Turn away from your sins. I don't know what your life looks like, but my guess is there was a time in your life when you were radically in love with Jesus. My hope is there was a time in your life, and maybe for you right now, that is that time. But my hope is that if. If that time is not right now, if it was in the past, that you would do what Jesus encourages the Ephesians to do. Listen to what he says. Think about how far you've fallen. What was. What was your life like when you first came to know Jesus? What was it like that got you so passionate and excited? What was it that had not burnt you out and kept you from just being turned on for who Jesus was? You were in love with him. And listen to what he says. Think about how far you've fallen. Turn away from your sins. Then listen to this. Do the things you did at first. When my wife told me about the kisses, you know what I've been doing? I've been ripping my mask off when she gets into bed and I've been rolling over and going and giving her a kiss. I've been like, let's smoochy, Ruchi baby. Do you know why? Because I'm going back to what I did at first. He doesn't say, I want you to notice this. He doesn't say, to go back to the love that you had at first. That. That was a childish, immature love. What he says is to go back and do what you did at first. Go back and act the way you did at first. I'll tell you when my relationship with Jesus gets a little bit cold, when I feel a little Distant. And again, it's never because Jesus has moved. It's always because I moved. You know what I do? I go back and I do the things that I did at first. One of those things that I've been working on lately is I used to at night, before I had cell phones before life was all crazy and you could keep your mind constantly engaged like you can in today's world. I used to lay in bed and I would just pray. And so I've been making it a personal practice to go back to that activity and to set my phone down to turn off the lights and just pray even until I fall asleep. Some of you might feel guilty about praying until you fall asleep. That's a great thing. What else would you rather be doing until you went to sleep? Pray and talk with God. Spend time with him. He's not going to be mad if you fall asleep. When Jenny and I were first dating, there were times when we'd be talking on a phone and you'd be talking and you'd be falling asleep as you're talking. You know why? Because I loved her so much, I wanted to stay on the phone with her. Right? That's not a bad thing for you to fall asleep. What if you went back and did the things you did at first with Jesus? What would it look like in your relationship? Look, I know. I don't know. I don't know what this week is going to hold. I don't know how. You may have lots of time. You may be stuck at home and you may be get to experience with lots of things, Experiment with lots of things of going back to the way it was with Jesus early in the days when you first fell in love with him. And maybe you'll have to go right back to work and jump right back into the rigmarole of life. But whatever you do, I hope that you will take the time to slow down a little it and do the things that you did at first with him. Fall back in love with him. Roll over and pucker your lips and give Jesus a big old kiss. Now that's a little gross. If you're a dude, like so maybe there's something else. Roll over. Give him a hug. Roll over. Tell him you love him. Roll over and turn to prayer. But do something. Tell Jesus you love him and go back to what you did at first. It will make a difference in your life. Stop sinning. Go back to what you did at first. Love you guys. And I hope that you have a really great rest of your week. I hope that there isn't crazy amounts of snow. And I get to see you soon. But until then, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy Hanukkah, whatever it is. I love you guys. Bye.

And so in that period of anartha-nivṛtti, you want to get to the next stage after anartha-nivṛtti. Then you have nishta, where, as is described in these verses. We've all been quoting 'naṣṭa-prāyeṣv abhadreṣu nityaṁ bhāgavata-sevayā bhagavaty uttama-śloke bhaktir bhavati naiṣṭhikī (SB 1.2.18).' Naiṣṭhikī means nishtha. You know that word 'stha,' it's the same as the word stand. That's where it comes from. The word stand. You know you stand in one place or like you have an understanding, because it's clear to you then, and nishta means that you're no longer pushed by these urges that affect everybody in the material world. That's a miracle, and that miracle happens when you keep going in devotional service and practicing the basic tenets with good association and full faith in the Lord's orders. At a certain time, you start to notice Bhagavatam says, 'tadā rajas-tamo-bhāvāḥ kāma-lobhādayaś ca ye ceta etair anāviddhaṁ sthitaṁ sattve prasīdati (SB 1.2.19).' You know what the word Tada means? It means 'ta-da'. It's like you're practicing. And then all of a sudden, wait a minute, how come I didn't fall asleep? How come I didn't go in the other room and grab my phone while I was chanting? How come I wanted to go to the Bhāgavatam class instead of watching a special on I don't know whatever there is out there. I don't know what all the offerings are, but this is by the mercy of the Lord. Because of your faithful adherence to the process of devotional service. And when you come to nishta, there are so many possibilities open in your life. You've crossed the great desert of anarta nivritti, which seems to go on forever and ever and ever. When you come to nishta, tadā rajas-tamo-bhāvāḥ kāma-lobhādayaś ca ye ceta etair anāviddhaṁ sthitaṁ sattve prasīdati, you actually start to touch the śuddha sattva, which means the spiritual energy. And then from there, it's like you're pushing a big boulder up the hill. And when Ruchi comes, the boulder starts to roll down by itself. Ruchi means, I really want this. It's not that I have to control myself. I have to control myself not to run after Kṛṣṇa. It's a game-changer for their confidence and financial success.” Karen Yankovich: “I believe this world needs more wealthy women. I think women with money can change the world—we can donate to causes that matter and create more freedom and choice in our lives.” “It's time for you to make some real money; let's start creating, marketing, and selling high-ticket programs that allow you to show up as a thought leader.” “I want you to believe in your heart that if your program is $10,000, then it's worth $100,000—that's the confidence that allows you to say $10,000 like, ‘Please pass the salt.'” Resources Mentioned In This Episode: Connect with Ruchi on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn for tips on aligning wealth with well-being. If you're on the hunt for steroid-free itchy scalp remedy options to end the embarrassment and discomfort of flaky, itchy scalp problems, this episode is for you. From cradle cap in infants to itchy, crusty, flaky dandruff in adults, so many people feel like they've tried every dandruff treatment in the book. From medicated anti-dandruff shampoo to topical steroids and other medications, you know that eventually, the flaking, itching, and redness all return. This is because those treatments don't deal with the root of the issue, which is an imbalanced scalp microbiome, leading to an overgrowth of things like malassezia.AND a compromised skin barrier, which can be a trigger for the atopic march (food allergies, dry skin, allergic rhinitis, eczema, and asthma).Joining me to discuss how to get rid of dandruff, cradle cap removal, and her line of gentle scalp rebalancing products is return guest Ruchi Gupta, MD, MPH. She is a Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a Clinical Attending at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago.Dr. Gupta has over 20 years of experience as a board-certified pediatrician and health researcher and currently serves as the founding director of the Center for Food Allergy & Asthma Research (CFAAR).She is world-renowned for her research on the epidemiology, economic impact, prevention, and management of allergic conditions, and strives to find answers and shape policies surrounding these conditions in order to reduce burden and improve health equity. In This Episode:Why Dr. Gupta sought out an effective itchy scalp remedyWhat is cradle cap? (+ cradle cap removal options)Why scalp issues in babies could trigger food allergiesDandruff causes (+ how the scalp microbiome is involved)How Yobee hair products workThoughts on hair products causing MORE scalp inflammationWho can use Yobee products? (Can you use it for beardruff + beard care?)Quotes“So for the scalp, typically your cells should regenerate every month. And what happens when you have dandruff, it's happening more frequently and that's where you're getting those white flakes. So it's happening almost weekly. And what's causing that? So many things. So we all use different hair products now and a lot of the hair products have chemicals in it. And so what are those chemicals doing to disrupt the microbiome? You have to think about that.”“Eczema and the cradle cap and food allergies and allergic rhinitis and asthma, they're all connected. And so if you have one, you have a higher chance of having the rest. So those babies with eczema, just like my daughter, develop food allergies. But now we're seeing more and more, like a lot of the creams or, like you said, shampoos will have a food component and that could be causing that food allergy to start up because it's entering them through their skin.”LinksFind Dr. Gupta online | Instagram | Instagram | Facebook | Facebook | Twitter | TwitterFind Yobee online and on InstagramGet Dr. Gupta's book,

Our inside wholeness is what creates prosperity.Ruchi Pinniger is a former Wall Street executive and founder at Watch Her Prosper.  Her company provides financial mentorship, support, and services to women-led service-based businesses. After personal and family struggles, Ruchi shared a story about how one Prada bag taught her that true prosperity is in inner wholeness rather than material possessions.Even women would rather talk about their death than money, Ruchi explains that financial support and help are crucial to all businesses of all sizes. The numbers are data and when is used properly can show a path one business should take, but creating a safe, non-judgmental space for women to discuss money, is crucial for practical financial planning and support. Not only the financial support matters for business success but also our internal beliefs and self-care. Ruchi's RIR concept (Recognize, Interrupt, Reframe) helps women shift from disempowering to empowering thoughts about money and success. This involves recognizing negative self-talk, interrupting it, and reframing it with positive affirmations. Both personal and societal conditioning are tough for women, and there is a need for a holistic approach that will include work but also balance it with well-being and self-compassion. Having more spaciousness and ease in our lives will lead to greater success. Reframing our habits and believes is the key and anything is possible for us after that. Notes:

Spotting food allergy signs quickly can be tricky, especially since they don't manifest in everyone in the same way. But it's so important to be able to identify the symptoms of food allergies, because a whopping 1 in 13 kids have at least ONE food allergy. And that number is surprisingly high for adults, too. Food allergies are an IgE immune-mediated reaction. Essentially, your body sees a particular food as an invader, so it goes on attack by releasing chemicals like histamine. So if you've ever wondered what causes food allergies, common food allergy signs, and whether you can prevent them altogether, this episode is for you! My guest is not only an expert in food allergies, but she's also a mom raising a child with life-threatening food allergies. Her invaluable information and insight about what's driving food allergies in kids and adults is really sobering, some of which may surprise you (as it did me). My guest today is Ruchi Gupta, MD, MPH, a Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a Clinical Attending at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. Dr. Gupta has over 20 years of experience as a board-certified pediatrician and health researcher and currently serves as the founding director of the Center for Food Allergy & Asthma Research (CFAAR). She is world-renowned for her research on the epidemiology, economic impact, prevention, and management of allergic conditions, and strives to find answers and shape policies surrounding these conditions in order to reduce burden and improve health equity. Do you have personal experience with a food allergy? Are you comfortable identifying food allergy signs should they arise? Share your questions, comments + experiences in the comments below! In This Episode: Dr Gupta's personal experience with food allergies What's driving the explosion in food allergies (in children and adults) Differences between food allergies, food intolerances and food sensitivities Food allergy signs and anaphylaxis signs (you might overlook) Anaphylaxis treatment options (why to NOT use Benadryl if you notice food allergy signs) Shocking food allergy trigger (NEW RESEARCH) Updated food allergy prevention tips for parents Quotes “About 8% of kids have food allergy. Now that's about 1 in 13, or 2 in every classroom. So it's a lot.” “If you only give Benadryl, it may mask some of the symptoms because it takes away maybe some of the rash and some of the itching, but the reaction continues to happen in your body.” “One of the biggest hypotheses right now is if a food is introduced through your skin before your gut, then your immune system goes on the attack.” Links Find Dr. Gupta online | Instagram | Instagram | Facebook | Facebook | Twitter | Twitter Find Yobee online and on Instagram Get Dr. Gupta's book, Food Without Fear Healthy Skin Show ep. 269: Allergy Testing: Everything You Need To Know w/ Dr. Stacy Silvers Healthy Skin Show ep. 321: Before You Invest in Food Sensitivity Testing (What You Need To Know) Healthy Skin Show ep. 291: Can You Stop Eczema, Allergies + Asthma In Kids? w/ Dr. Chris Thompson Healthy Skin Show ep. 265: Problem with Antihistamines That No One Tells You w/ Dr. Chris Thompson, MD Healthy Skin Show ep. 262: Why Your Child's Risk of Allergies, Eczema + Asthma Is So High w/ Meenal Lele
