In a powerful and thought-provoking talk delivered in Sydney, Australia, Acharya das explores the dramatic transformation of human consciousness in the modern age and asks a confronting question: Why, despite unprecedented technological advancement and material comfort, are so many people experiencing anxiety, emptiness, and hopelessness? Drawing on alarming statistics surrounding depression, mental health crises, and the growing despair among younger generations, he presents a compelling analysis of a society that has become increasingly disconnected from inner peace and spiritual purpose.Acharya das examines the profound psychological impact of modern technology, social media, and smartphone culture, revealing how people are not only consumers in the digital economy — but have themselves become the product. He explains how algorithms, data collection, and constant stimulation shape human behavior, fuel dissatisfaction, and intensify mental disturbance. He further critiques the institutionalization of greed and envy within modern economic systems, arguing that many societies actively cultivate endless consumption and comparison as drivers of economic growth, often at great cost to human wellbeing.Contrasting this modern condition with the timeless wisdom of the Bhagavad-gītā, Acharya das offers a deeply hopeful alternative vision of life. He explains the yogic understanding that true peace does not arise from endlessly pursuing material desires, but from awakening spiritual consciousness and recognizing our deeper identity beyond the temporary body and restless mind. Using profound spiritual insights and practical guidance, he concludes by presenting meditation and mantra chanting as transformative daily practices capable of restoring clarity, balance, and genuine inner peace. This illuminating presentation challenges conventional assumptions about happiness and progress while offering practical spiritual wisdom for anyone seeking meaning, resilience, and lasting peace in an increasingly restless world.Chapters 00:00:00 Introduction: The Unprecedented Transformation of Human Consciousness 00:03:58 The Smartphone Revolution and Loss of Human Connection 00:06:15 The Economic Value of Peace and Generational Despair 00:10:25 Misconceptions About Peace as a Commodity 00:14:19 The Surveillance and Exploitation of Smartphone Users 00:18:52 The Scale of Digital Advertising and Tech Company Revenue 00:20:56 The Rise of Self-Centeredness and the Selfie Culture 00:26:31 Historical Analysis: The Century of Self-Centeredness 00:30:34 The Origins of Consumer Culture and Propaganda 00:35:28 The Deliberate Shift from Needs to Desires Culture 00:39:21 Economic Theory Promoting Envy and Greed 00:41:40 Economic Critique and the Seeds of Destruction 00:43:44 The Promise of Happiness Through Consumption 00:46:58 The Influencer Economy and Children's Aspirations 00:48:45 Ancient Yogic Wisdom: The Alternative Perspective 00:52:52 The Necessity of Transcendental Connection 00:54:38 The Fundamental Spiritual Principle 00:57:07 The Illusion of Physical Identity 00:58:58 The Reality of Mortality and Spiritual Identity 01:00:39 Spiritual Nutrition and Meditation Practice 01:03:19 Conclusion: The Path to Genuine Peace
This talk is the fifth installment in a wellness series that takes a distinctly yogic approach to understanding life's challenges and spiritual development.Acharya das discusses the concept of "false shelter" (durashraya in Sanskrit) - the tendency to place unlimited trust in things that cannot provide genuine protection or happiness. He uses examples ranging from relationships and material possessions to modern technology and social media to illustrate how people become victims of their own poor choices rather than external circumstances. He stresses the importance of taking personal responsibility for life decisions and developing consequential thinking.Acharya das concludes with an emphasis on the importance of cultivating atma-tattva (knowledge of the soul/self) and the necessity of reconnecting with the Supreme Soul as the only genuine source of shelter and protection. He advocates for regular chanting meditation as a transformative practice that can lead to self-realization and God-realization, describing it as an immersive experience rather than a mental activity. Quotes used in the talk:For him who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends; but for one who has failed to do so, his very mind will be the greatest enemy. Bhagavad-gītā 6.6For one whose mind is unbridled, self-realization is difficult work. But he whose mind is controlled and who strives by right means is assured of success. That is My opinion. Bhagavad-gītā 6.36When a man in the material world takes more interest in the materialistic way of life than in spiritual/God consciousness, he is considered to be in a diseased condition. The normal condition is to remain an eternal servant of the Lord. This healthy condition is lost when the living entity forgets God due to being attracted by the external features of Krsna's maya energy. This world of maya is called durasraya, which means “false or bad shelter.” One who puts his faith in durasraya becomes a candidate for hoping against hope. In the material world everyone is trying to become happy, and although their material attempts are baffled in every way, due to their nescience [ignorance] they cannot understand their mistakes. People try to rectify one mistake by making another mistake. This is the way of the struggle for existence in the material world. If one in this condition is advised to take to [cultivating] God consciousness and be happy, he does not accept such instructions. – Srila AC Bhaktivedanta Swami PrabhupadaPersons devoid of ātma-tattva do not inquire into the problems of life, being too attached to the fallible soldiers like the body, children and wife. Although sufficiently experienced, they still do not see their inevitable destruction. Bhāgavata Purāṇa 2.1.4“One who is not connected with the Supreme Soul can have neither transcendental intelligence nor a steady mind, without which there is no possibility of peace. What if nothing in your life is truly separate—not you, not others, not the world around you? This teaching explores the deep truth that we are not separate and that everything is Brahma. Through the wisdom of Yoga philosophy and non-dualism, we are guided to see that all of creation is one living presence called Brahma or Brahman. As spiritual awakening unfolds, the mind begins to soften its belief in separation. We start to realize that joy, sorrow, love, and struggle are all movements within the same infinite reality. Nothing is outside of it. This talk helps us understand how spiritual awakening is not about becoming something new, but remembering what has always been true: there is only the One, and that One appears as everything. In this Baba Talk by Maetreyii Ma, ancient teachings are shared in a simple and direct way so anyone can understand the deeper meaning of Yoga philosophy and non-dualism in daily life. Over time, we begin to feel a quiet shift: we are not separate from Brahma, from life, or from love itself. What if true detachment doesn't come from pulling away from life—but from loving more deeply? Many spiritual seekers believe detachment means shutting down emotions, avoiding attachments, or withdrawing from the world. But the ancient teachings of Viveka and Viragya point to something very different. In this Baba Talk by Maetreyii Ma, discover how true detachment arises naturally through unconditional love, right understanding, and surrender to the Infinite. Learn why real Viragya is not a cold or distant state, but the result of seeing yourself in all beings and all beings in yourself. This profound teaching explores the relationship between Viveka (spiritual discernment) and Viragya (detachment), revealing how self-realization, spiritual awakening, and nondualism transform the way we experience love, suffering, success, loss, and everyday life. Whether you live as a monk, a spiritual seeker, or a householder with family and responsibilities, this talk offers practical wisdom for opening the heart while letting go of the illusion of separation. In this video: • What Viveka and Viragya really mean • Why unconditional love leads to true detachment • The difference between false detachment and spiritual freedom • How spiritual awakening changes your relationship with life • The role of self-realization in expanding love beyond the individual self • Why nondualism naturally leads to compassion and surrender • How to remain centered through pleasure, pain, gain, and loss If you are seeking deeper peace, greater love, and a direct path toward self-realization, this teaching offers a powerful perspective on the nature of the Self and the Infinite. This talk is from an event sponsored by the Hindu Council of Australia in cooperation with the Australian School of Meditation and Yoga. The question was whether there is a distinction between Dharma and Sanatana Dharma? Acharya das explained that while Dharma has conventional definitions including customary religious observance, prescribed conduct, duty, religion, and good works, it has a deeper meaning as an intrinsic characteristic that makes something what it is - something that cannot be removed without changing the fundamental nature of that thing. He provided examples of heat and light being the dharma of fire, sweetness being the dharma of sugar, and liquidity being the dharma of water.Sanatana as meaning eternal, perpetual, permanent, everlasting, and primeval, distinguishing Sanatana Dharma from conventional religion by explaining that it deals with the eternal nature of the living being or spirit soul (atma). Acharya das distinguished Sanatana Dharma as dealing with the eternal nature of the living being or soul (atma), referencing Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada's teachings that Sanatana Dharma refers to activities that cannot be changed and represents the eternal function of living entities in relationship with the Supreme Lord. The lecturer addressed the apparent contradiction in the Bhagavad Gita where Krishna instructs Arjuna to abandon all varieties of dharma and surrender unto Him, explaining that this refers to abandoning temporary religious duties to embrace one's eternal spiritual nature. Acharya das proposed that true self-realization requires understanding the three aspects of the self/soul: one's essence (being Brahman while maintaining distinction from Paramatma), one's position (equal to all living beings but subservient to the Supreme Being), and one's natural function (to love and to serve.) He concluded that bhakti - rendering eternal loving service to the Lord - is the natural function of the living being and the true definition of Sanatana Dharma. Quotes used in the talk:Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reaction. Do not fear. - Bhagavad-gītā 18.66Pure love for Kṛṣṇa is eternally established in the hearts of the living entities. It is not something to be gained from another source. When the heart is purified by hearing and chanting, this love naturally awakens. - Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 22.107 By chanting the holy name of the Lord, one dissolves his entanglement in material activities. After this, one becomes very attracted to Krishna, and thus dormant love for Krishna is awakened. - Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 15.109 Chapters 00:00:00 Introduction to Dharma vs Sanatana Dharma 00:05:50 Deeper Understanding of Dharma 00:06:28 Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada's Teachings on Sanatana Dharma 00:08:31 The Bhagavad Gita's Apparent Contradiction 00:12:17 Arjuna's Dilemma and Krishna's First Instruction 00:15:35 The Nature of the Eternal Soul 00:17:48 Varieties of Dharma in the Bhagavad Gita 00:22:06 The Temporary Nature of Vanashram Dharma 00:25:31 Self-Realization and the Three Essential Questions 00:29:46 The Position and Relationship of the Soul 00:31:09 The Natural Function and Characteristics of the Soul 00:35:10 Service as the Soul's Natural Expression 00:38:27 Bhakti as Sanatana Dharma 00:41:10 The Awakening of Dormant Love 00:43:22 Free Will and Universal Brotherhood 00:46:04 Conclusion and the Power of Chanting
This is the Q&A from after the talk sponsored by the Hindu Council of Australia in cooperation with the Australian School of Meditation and Yoga. The question was whether there is a distinction between Dharma and Sanatana Dharma? Acharya das concludes this Q&A session with the clarification that Sanatana Dharma is eternal and represents the soul's nature fully expressed in the spiritual dimension, and self-realization is accessible to everyone, as it is the uncovering of their eternal nature rather than being reserved for special individuals. The discussion covers sadhana (spiritual practice) as the means to attain spiritual goals, with meditation on spiritual sounds as the foundational practice. The teacher uses the analogy of fog being burned away by sunlight to describe how regular spiritual practice gradually reveals spiritual clarity and identity. Key components include meditation/chanting, cultivation of yoga wisdom (atma jnana), and spiritual association (sangha). Acharya das also addresses the transformation from ego-centered consciousness to God-centered consciousness, describing the journey from seeing oneself as the central enjoying agent to becoming an eternal servant of God.Chapters 00:00:00 Audience member sharing their understanding of Dharma 00:02:59 Progressive Nature of Vedic Dharma and Spiritual Advancement 00:06:53 Sadhana: The Practical Path to Self-Realization 00:10:37 Essential Elements of Spiritual Practice 00:14:04 Transformation from Ego-Centered to God-Centered Consciousness 00:16:38 The Journey from Self-Centeredness to Selflessness 00:20:30 Practical Spiritual Living and Modern Challenges 00:23:31 Developing Consciousness and Introspection 00:27:41 Emotional Regulation and Practical Wisdom 00:29:27 The Eternal Nature of Sanatana Dharma 00:31:37 Universal Accessibility of Self-Realization 00:32:33 Concluding with Transcendental Sound Practice

What if enlightenment is not becoming something new, but awakening to what has always been true? This powerful spiritual teaching explores what is enlightenment and how suffering begins with the belief that we are separate from the Divine. Through deep yet simple wisdom rooted in non-dualism, this talk points toward awakening from the illusion of the separate self and realizing the infinite presence within all life. Rather than gaining something, spiritual awakening is letting go of the false identity of the ego and remembering our unity with the infinite Brahma–with inner peace, freedom, and deeper love. In this Baba Talk by Maetreyii Ma, ancient Yoga philosophy becomes practical and understandable for modern seekers who want to know the true meaning of awakening, enlightenment, and the nature of the self. Why do we get what we want—and still feel unsatisfied? This talk explores why we suffer and how to live with more clarity and purpose. It shows that when we follow every desire, we often feel pulled, stressed, and off track. In this Baba Talk by Maetreyii Ma, you'll hear a simple teaching from Yoga philosophy. Your dharma, or your duty in life, isn't about giving up desire—it's about choosing what is true and steady. Some desires align with dharma—like wanting to grow, help others, or create something meaningful. These feel calm and clear. But when desire becomes controlling—driven by fear, ego, or “I must have this”—it leads to suffering. This is why following dharma matters. It helps you act from clarity, not pressure. Over time, this leads to self-realization—seeing that you are more than your desires and changing life. Pause and ask: “Is this just what I want—or is this what is right?” About Maetreyii Ma Nolan, Ph.D. Maetreyii Ma Nolan, Ph.D., is an award-winning author, spiritual teacher, psychologist, and expert in consciousness and holistic healing. From Craftsmanship to Scalable SystemsIn this clip, Vishnu Acharya, Head of Network Infrastructure EMEA at Uber, shares a key lesson in scaling engineering. In the early days, success came from brilliant generalist engineers building highly crafted systems
In this compelling fourth lecture of the series, Acharya das reframes well-being through the lens of timeless wisdom, drawing from sources like the Bhagavad Gita to reveal a powerful three-dimensional model: body, mind, and the often-overlooked spiritual self. With precision and clarity, the talk exposes a universal truth—no amount of success, relationships, or material gain can resolve the subtle but persistent sense of emptiness that many experience. This is not a personal failure or circumstantial issue; it is a signal pointing toward something deeper. The Bhagavad- gītā verse quoted in this talk:In this world, there is nothing so sublime and pure as transcendental knowledge. Such knowledge is the mature fruit of all mysticism. And one who has achieved this enjoys the self within himself in due course of time. - Bhagavad-gītā 4.38Such a liberated person is not attracted to material sense pleasure or external objects but is always in trance, enjoying the pleasure within. In this way the self-realized person enjoys unlimited happiness, for he concentrates on the Supreme. - Bhagavad-gītā 5.21One whose happiness is within, who is active within, who rejoices within and is illumined within, is actually the perfect mystic. He is liberated in the Supreme, and ultimately he attains the Supreme. - Bhagavad-gītā 5.24Chapters00:00:00 Introduction and Three-Dimensional Well-being Paradigm 00:02:22 The Universal Experience of Emptiness and Advertising Manipulation 00:04:38 Personal Counseling Example: Fear of Being Alone 00:06:44 Behavioral Patterns of Avoiding Emptiness 00:08:38 Life Clutter and Hidden Loneliness 00:11:19 Emptiness as Spiritual Protection and Indication 00:13:18 Material Wealth and Relationship Status Don't Eliminate Emptiness 00:15:01 The Inadequacy of the Material World 00:16:37 A Woman's Honest Blog About Emptiness 00:23:47 Attraction to Beauty, Happiness, and Love 00:27:00 The Ice Cream Sundae Metaphor 00:28:52 Spiritual Malnourishment and the Fish Out of Water Metaphor 00:30:31 The Inward Journey and Purpose of Human Life 00:33:07 Bhagavad Gita Verses on Transcendental Knowledge 00:35:56 Liberation Through Spiritual Understanding 00:37:59 The Self-Realized Person's Experience 00:39:30 The Perfect Mystic and Spiritual Attainment 00:41:08 Two Simple Practices: Yoga Wisdom and Meditation 00:42:16 Spiritual Sound and Its Purifying Effects 00:44:15 The Signal of Inner Longing 00:45:41 The Futility of Material Investment 00:46:55 Invitation to Kirtan Practice
Who are you—really, beyond your thoughts, roles, and identity? What if everything you believe about yourself is only part of the story? This Baba Talk by Maetreyii Ma points you to a direct experience of who you are. Most of us live through the mind—through thoughts, memories, and identity—but your true self is not limited to any of these. As the mind quiets, you can notice something simple: you are aware. You are the one who knows your thoughts, not the thoughts themselves. This is what lies beyond the mind. This talk guides you to discover your true self through this direct noticing. This is the heart of self realization—recognizing the awareness that has always been present. As this becomes clear, the sense of separation begins to soften. You may begin to experience non-separation, a natural feeling of connection with all of life. This also leads to ego transcendence, where the small “I” relaxes and something deeper is felt. In Yoga philosophy, this is called moksha—a deep inner freedom and peace. You can begin to notice this for yourself in a simple way: Next time a strong thought comes up, just try: “This is just a thought… I'm aware of it.” “I don't have to follow it—I'm not my thoughts.” Pause for a moment. That small gap—that's the beginning of freedom. What if the peace you're looking for doesn't come from trying harder—but from letting go? Many of us try to control life, fix everything, and get what we want. But this talk shows a different way—the power of surrender. When you stop fighting and begin letting go, something deeper can open inside you. In this Baba Talk by Maetreyii Ma, you'll hear a simple and honest teaching from Yoga philosophy. It shows how real change doesn't come from forcing life to go your way, but from trusting something greater. This is the beginning of opening to divine grace—a love that is always there, not based on what you do or get. It is a kind of divine love that asks for nothing and gives everything. As you begin to let go of control, something shifts. You don't feel so tight or stressed. You begin to feel more open, more at peace. This is the start of self realization—seeing that you are not just your wants, your fears, or your plans. This is also part of spiritual awakening—a change in how you see yourself and your life. You can begin in a simple way: Next time things feel out of control, just pause and say: “I don't have to control everything. I can let go.” Take a breath. That small letting go is the beginning of something new. What Breaks When You ScaleIn this clip, Vishnu Acharya, Head of Network Infrastructure EMEA at Uber, shares a hard truth about scaling. As organizations grow, from 10 to 100 to 1000+, everything starts to break.People, processes, systems, and software all face new and unexpected challenges. ⚠️But within that chaos lies the biggest learning opportunity. The key is to build sustainable foundations, strong people, resilient processes, and scalable systems that can evolve with growth.Because scaling isn't just about getting bigger, it's about building things that don't break under pressure.

This is a talk on personal agency and spiritual well-being as Part 2 of a continuing series on Wellbeing.Personal agency is defined as "the individual's capacity to act intentionally, to make autonomous choices, and to influence their own circumstances and environment." But how free is our decision making process? And how autonomous are we in a world driven by Social Media and AI? Unfortunately, people don't question where their desires originate and whether they are truly self-generated.Personal agency is often associated with the terms self-determination and self-agency. Acharya das questions what personal agency means from a spiritual perspective, beginning from the concept of "self" used in the term ‘self-determination.'At the beginning of the talk Acharya das mentions another series of talks titled “Who Controls your Mind” which can be accessed via the following links:https://open.spotify.com/episode/125xZdjbMeCC1wmN4O8mPm?si=4Vw4cpZoQz6NKEPOKXxACw https://open.spotify.com/episode/5UiR00VEKV5q2HT4L4g7bC?si=2qLshURaTa2VDF0m_68kMQ https://open.spotify.com/episode/0Bb1QwUPfzJN0wIcRT1qbU?si=eu3rhEToQkGR3SYEQAXF-A https://open.spotify.com/episode/6FLoEVfJoEmQ7frixdVuCC?si=W5NVIIdbSImv31IIdPwRAQ https://acharyadas.com/series/who-controls-your-mind/ Verses quoted in this talk:“The individual is the passenger in the chariot of the material body, and intelligence is the driver. Mind is the driving instrument, and the senses are the horses. The self is thus the enjoyer or sufferer in the association of the mind and senses. Startups vs Enterprises: The Innovation Trade-OffIn this clip, Vishnu Acharya, Head of Network Infrastructure EMEA at Uber, breaks down how startups and enterprises approach building differently.Startups often move fast, making scrappy trade-offs to prioritize speed and cost while still aiming for quality ⚡Large enterprises, on the other hand, have abundant resources, but that can sometimes lead to complacency. Without intentional effort, systems can become stale, even if they're easy to build
Recorded live at CONEXPO-CON/AGG in Las Vegas, host Eric Lanke interviews NFPA Advanced Hydraulics Conference presenters Barun Acharya (Parker Hannifin), Joe Budden (Danfoss Power Solutions), and Philippe Reynolds (Poclain Hydraulics) on how electrification is driving innovation in mobile hydraulics through hybrid architectures, smarter controls, and integrated mechatronic solutions. Acharya outlines hybrid strategies to reduce battery cost via engine and hydraulic downsizing, variable pumps, steer-by-wire, and faster electric motor speed control to cut losses. Budden discusses selecting among increasingly complex system architectures and highlights new EV challenges such as back EMF, torque ripple, and NVH. Reynolds presents an integrated electronic drive unit for electrified wheel hubs, emphasizing energy-based sizing, higher voltage trends, and plug-and-play integration. The panel describes company shifts toward system engineering, acquisitions, and vehicle-level testing, notes autonomy as an emerging driver, and concludes that hydraulics' power density remains difficult to replace, though electric actuators fit some niche use cases. What if spiritual awakening isn't something to achieve—but something to recognize? Spiritual awakening may be far closer than you think. Instead of trying to reach something far away, this teaching invites you to look at what is already here. The sense of separation, the feeling of being alone in your experience—what if that isn't the full truth? What if you are not separate, but already part of a deeper unity of all beings? In this Baba Talk by Maetreyii Ma, the path to awakening is revealed in a simple but profound way—not through striving, but through a shift in how you see yourself and the world. Rooted in yoga philosophy, this talk points toward a deeper understanding of non-separation, where your identity is not confined to the individual self, but is an expression of infinite consciousness and divine essence. Rather than becoming something new, this is about remembering what has always been true. Through both the mind and the heart, you are guided toward direct self-realization—recognizing the presence of the divine in everything: in your daily life, in others, and within yourself. If you've ever felt that awakening is distant, complicated, or out of reach, this teaching offers a grounded and direct way of seeing—one that brings you back to what is already here: the presence of the divine within you and in all things. What if spiritual awakening isn't something to achieve—but something to recognize? What has already been here for you? Share below. In this episode of the Free Radical Podcast, we sit in sacred conversation with Bhakti Lalita Devi (Goh Diwajnavi) — teacher, author, and pilgrim of the heart within the Gaudiya Vaishnava lineage. A devoted disciple of Srila Bhaktisundar Govinda Maharaj, the Acharya of Sri Caitanya Sarasvat Math, she spent nearly two decades in India in intimate service to her Gurudeva, acting as his personal correspondent secretary and absorbing the subtle currents of devotion that flowed through his presence. In 1996, in a gesture both tender and revolutionary, her guru offered her the sacred saffron brahmachari cloth — a first for a woman in their lineage — and bestowed upon her the name Bhakti Lalita Devi, sealing her life in dedication to divine love. Now residing in Chiang Mai, Thailand, she moves between continents as a quiet emissary of grace — encouraging hearts, steadying faith, and sharing the inner culture of bhakti-yoga as a living, breathing path of transformation. In this episode, we explore the feminine heart of bhakti — its softness and strength, its surrender and sovereignty. Bhakti Lalita Devi speaks of her journey with her Gurudeva, of life in sacred community, of love as service, and of devotion as an ever-unfolding revelation. What emerges is not merely philosophy, but a transmission — a glimpse into a spirituality that is relational, embodied, and deeply personal. We invite you to enter this contemplative dialogue — a meeting of hearts, a meditation in conversation, an ongoing dance with reality itself. Thank you for being part of this ongoing conversation.
Over the past 3yrs media reports have described Burnout as "the silent epidemic," "the silent killer," and "the silent epidemic stealing your energy and joy."A significant root cause of burnout is a lack of purpose, stating that when people feel their work/life output is not connected to any higher purpose or sense of direction, depression quickly follows. Then there is the problem of cultivating unrealistic expectations of “life”.The fundamental spiritual truth is that individuals are eternal spiritual beings temporarily residing in physical bodies, and that over-identification with the temporary body and mind is the root of all suffering. Acharya das advocated for tolerance, temperance, reduced consumption, and the cultivation of spiritual purpose as pathways to avoid burnout and achieve fulfillment. Episode #500: “If my story offers anything, I really hope that it offers permission to question sincerely, to grow beyond structures that once served us and to hold both gratitude and discernment at the same time,” says Shelina Rose, a former Acharya in the S.N. Goenka Vipassana tradition. Having stepped away from that role a couple of years ago, she does not reject discipline or community. Instead, she argues that the sincerity that draws someone into a spiritual container can later require them to move beyond it. For her, maturity means shifting from dependency to autonomy without losing appreciation for what once helped. Born in Nairobi to an Indian Ismaili Muslim family and raised in London, Shelina studied medicine in Cardiff and trained as a general practitioner in London. A pivotal moment came while working on a pediatric burns ward, where she witnessed a mute child begin to heal only after expressing trauma through art. The experience convinced her of the deep link between mind and body. Despite professional success, she felt unfulfilled and left her job to travel to Australia. There she encountered Vipassana meditation. A powerful experience on her first ten-day course committed her fully to the path. She later studied Pāḷi in India, became an Assistant Teacher, then an Acharya, serving in senior roles across Europe. She remembers the presence of S.N. Goenka vividlyduring these years: “The energy of that man was giant.” Over time, however, she felt the culture discouraged inquiry. “You weren't really trained to think.” Her practice also plateaued; the technique, she says, “becomes a fossil after a while.” After long reflection, she left, losing community and security in the process. However, rebuilding through compassion and creative expression, she now emphasizes care, discernment, and growth. Her closing advice: “I encourage you to question and to continue to grow.”
When the world feels unstable and conflict rises, the deeper spiritual question emerges: how do we stand for truth without becoming consumed by anger or hatred? In this Baba Talk by Maetreyii Ma, the teaching explores how to navigate Dharma and social conflict during periods of uncertainty. Drawing from Yoga philosophy, it reflects on how individuals and communities can remain grounded in spiritual awareness even in times of turmoil. When we recognize the unity of all beings, we begin to move beyond division and rediscover the true purpose of Dharma—to act for the welfare and protection of all life. Rather than reacting with fear or hostility, the talk invites us to embody love over fear, practice compassion in difficult times, and finding ways of responding to social turmoil with love. In this Baba Talk, Maetreyii Ma offers a spiritual perspective on gender identity and sexual orientation, exploring the influence of society on personal development. Drawing from yoga philosophy and identity, the discussion examines how self-understanding and attraction may be shaped by biology, culture, psychology, social norms, and spiritual concepts such as karma and samskara. While the question raised concerns gender identity, much of the conversation reflects on sexual orientation and spirituality, particularly during the sensitive period of identity formation in adolescence. The talk considers how young people form identity, how social approval and cultural fashion influence self-understanding, and how attraction may evolve over time. Throughout, the emphasis remains on compassion, non-hatred, and the spiritual principle of Dharma. Rather than punishment or condemnation, the teaching offers a spiritual approach to social issues, pointing toward patience, discernment, and maintaining love over fear in the midst of social struggle. This talk presents a traditional spiritual perspective rooted in yoga philosophy and cultural context. It does not represent contemporary medical or psychological consensus on sexual orientation or gender identity. The intention is not to condemn or exclude, but to explore identity and social change through a spiritual lens centered on compassion, responsibility, and Dharma. What if the very thing that broke your heart is the doorway to your freedom? In this Baba Talk by Maetreyii Ma, we look directly at struggle — loss, disappointment, blocked paths, and the moments that feel unfair. Through the lens of Yoga philosophy, this teaching explores the deeper tension between karma and free will, and how what feels like hardship may actually be part of a far greater movement of love. When something you depend on is taken away, it can feel cruel. But what if that moment is grace in difficult times? What if the removal of an attachment is not punishment, but protection? What if there is divine guidance in life, even when you cannot yet see the reason? The talk invites a powerful shift: instead of collapsing into victimhood, we begin to soften into trust. Surrender to divine will is not passive resignation — it is strength rooted in awareness. It is the courage to allow life to shape you rather than harden you. Spiritual growth through suffering reveals something steady beneath the chaos — a presence within you that remains untouched. In that discovery, struggle becomes refining rather than defeating. And then the deeper question arises: who am I really? Am I the personality shaped by circumstances, or am I the deeper presence witnessing it all? In the realization of non-separation, the feeling of isolation dissolves. You begin to sense that nothing is outside the embrace of the One. When seen from this wider awareness, everything is grace — not because life is easy, but because nothing is separate from the infinite love that guides it. Live from that knowing, and even the storm becomes shelter. When the world feels like it's breaking — who will you be? Darkness is real. But so is the light within you. In this Baba Talk by Maetreyii Ma, we explore what it truly means to stand steady in light in dark times. Not by denying anger, fear, or confusion — but by consciously choosing love in difficult times. Through the lens of Yoga philosophy, this talk reminds us that contraction and expansion are part of life. Even in periods of upheaval, there is a deeper current moving humanity toward awakening in dark times. That awakening begins in the heart. You may see greed. You may feel anger. You may judge — yourself or others. That is human. But the greater force is divine love. The greater choice is love over fear. This is a call to embody compassion in turbulent times, not as weakness, but as strength. To be a light in the darkness is not to pretend everything is fine. It is to bring kindness where there is pain. To respond with clarity instead of hatred. To stand firm without losing your heart. Even the smallest act of love matters. Especially now. You are not powerless in dark times. You are the light. This is quite a long talk, on a very fascinating topic, delivered by Acharya das in the Philippines. It is a comprehensive look into the question of spiritual identity, God-realization, and the resultant experience of the awakening of transcendental and ecstatic love for God which naturally arises from that.Acharya das outlines three essential questions for self-realization: What is my essence? (spiritual being), What is my position? (subservient part and parcel of God, not the center of everything), and What is my natural function? (to love and serve). He described how material consciousness leads people to try becoming "mini-gods," placing themselves at the center of “their” universe, which ultimately results in emptiness and unhappiness. Regarding God-realization, he explained three aspects of God's manifestation: Brahman (impersonal spiritual energy), Paramatma (the expansion of God within the heart of all beings), and Bhagavan (the personal form of God in a spiritual realm). The speaker emphasized that love is an exchange between persons and that every soul has an eternal and intimate connection with God who is their true soulmate. He next explains that pure love for God already exists within everyone's heart and doesn't need to be acquired from external sources. Through the process of bhakti-yoga (devotional practice), particularly chanting God's holy names, this dormant love naturally awakens as the heart becomes purified. Some of the verses he quoted or which support this topic:God - He is the eternal among all eternal entities, and the chief conscious being among all conscious beings. Among the many living entities, He is the chief, who fulfills their desires. Śvetāsvatara Upaniṣad 6.13 & Kaṭha Upaniṣad 2.2.13The same jīva (spirit-soul) is eternal and is for eternity and without a beginning joined to the Supreme Lord by the tie of an eternal kinship. He is transcendental spiritual potency. - Śrī Brahma-saṁhitā 5.21Learned transcendentalists who know the Absolute Truth call this nondual substance Brahman, Paramātmā or Bhagavān. ‐ Bhāgavata Purāṇa 1.2.11“Pure love for Kṛṣṇa is eternally established in the hearts of the living entities. It is not something to be gained from another source. When the heart is purified by hearing and chanting, this love naturally awakens. — Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 22.107“By chanting the holy name of the Lord, one dissolves his entanglement in material activities. After this, one becomes very attracted to Krishna, and thus dormant love for Krishna is awakened.” — Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 15.109CHAPTERS00:01:13 Introduction to Soul vs. Body Identity 00:05:47The Reality of Death and Eternal Nature of the Soul 00:09:33 The Vedic Teaching on Individual Soul and Supreme Soul 00:14:07 Self-Realization: Understanding Essence, Position, and Function 00:21:34 The Problem of Material Consciousness and Mini-God Mentality 00:27:40 Natural Function: The Joy of Service and Giving 00:34:18 Three Aspects of God: Brahman, Paramatma, and Bhagavan 00:41:22 The Eternal Relationship and Two Birds Analogy 00:51:39 The Supreme Teaching of Love and Common Misconceptions 00:55:05 The Nature of Love and Three Aspects of God Continued 00:56:52 The Process of Awakening Dormant Love 01:01:10 Sadhana Bhakti: The Practice of Devotional Service 01:05:12 Meditation as Spiritual Immersion, Not Mental Activity 01:23:29 Kirtan
In this episode from 20VC, Harry Stebbings talks with Anish Acharya, general partner at a16z, about the future of SaaS in an AI world. Anish argues that software is completely oversold and that the general story about vibe coding everything is flat wrong. They discuss why SaaS switching costs are actually going down thanks to coding agents, where startups versus incumbents will win, and whether the apps layer or foundation models will capture more value. They also cover agent overhype, the changing UI paradigm, what defensibility looks like now, and why boring wins versus weird wins in this product cycle. Just this morning, we had a three-hour meeting. When's the last time you had a three-hour Zoom call? We had one this morning from 7:00 AM to 10:00, right on the dot— we started right at seven, we ended at ten. We had maybe about ten people, and it was our beginning-of-the-year brainstorming session. Vision, mission, brainstorming for 2026 and beyond: What are our next goals for distributing knowledge that's what keeps us up at night and wakes us up early in the morning: how to do good for others. This is what Advaita Ācārya did—he couldn't sleep thinking about the plight of those in the material world who didn't have the opportunity to come in contact with true knowledge. The rich people were burning their money up doing all these crazy rituals, and poor people were wasting money on intoxication and frivolous activities. And he thought, 'Please, let me be a force in the world to reform them.' So he prayed for Lord Caitanya to come, and he helped to organize the distribution of knowledge. In fact, did you know that Advaita Ācārya went door to door? How'd you like it if Mahā-Viṣṇu came to your front door? 'Who's at the door, honey?' 'I think it's God. He's come knocking at our door.' That's how eager The Supreme Personality of Godhead is. He likes to do it, and He knows the formula. If you just go out and make yourself available—when it's cold or rainy or too hot or you don't feel like it—you're going to feel bad anyway; the material world's just like that. But if you pray, you chant, and you go out and try to give the knowledge to other people, you'll feel joyful 24 hours a day, and your thoughts will be transcendental. Because what you're going to do—if you toss and turn at night right now, you'll still toss and turn—but you're going to be thinking about: "How can I distribute Bhagavad-gītā, not just in English, but in Arabic and in Farsi, in French and Japanese, all over the world?" And if that's your preoccupation in life, you're a liberated soul. It's not hard; it's a simple process. These are heartfelt principles brought to us by Advaita Ācārya, who offered them to everybody. If you live in some far-flung place, you can restart the Hare Kṛṣṇa movement right from your place. All you have to do is have a Bhagavad-gītā and start reading it. Invite people to come over, chant a little bit, and when they get inspired, have them go out and chant for other people. The miracle happens again and again and again. Everyone's waiting for a miracle in this world, but one has already come: it's Advaita Ācārya. He showed us how to do it. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://thefourquestionsbook.com/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------
This is a Q&A session from the Soul Searchers Retreat. Acharya das delivers a comprehensive discussion on spiritual life versus material life, emphasizing the fundamental distinction between material consciousness (identifying with the physical body) and spiritual consciousness (recognizing oneself as an eternal spiritual being). He explains that material life is founded on the belief that "I am material," while spirituality recognizes "I'm an eternal spiritual being." A wide range of topics were addressed (as you can see from the chapters listed below) including the concept of karma yoga which was introduced as a process of integrating life activities with spiritual practice by offering all actions as service to a higher spiritual reality. **************************************CHAPTERS 00:00 Distinguishing Material and Spiritual Life02:39 The Concept of Karma Yoga 04:09 The Bhagavad Gita: Arjuna's Dilemma05:42 Arjuna's Breakdown and Krishna's Response08:24 Krishna's Teaching on Duty and Nature09:46 The Radical Teaching of Spiritual Action11:23 The Lesson of Utilizing Our Tools12:42 The Fundamental Shift in Consciousness14:06 Two Schools of Thought: Traditional vs. Advaita15:43 Critique of the "I Am God" Philosophy17:05 Qualitative Oneness vs. Quantitative Difference18:31 The Complete Whole Principle21:40 The Appeal of False God-Realization22:58 Three Aspects of Self-Realization23:56 The Inevitable Fall from Impersonal Realization25:37 Three Features of the Absolute Truth27:30 The Nature of Transcendental Connection29:40 Comparing Levels of Transcendental Happiness31:27 Rejection of Blind Faith32:42 The Problem of Consciousness Filters33:26 Indescribable Spiritual Delights34:52 The Importance of Questioning35:46 Proper vs. Improper Questioning37:07 The Problem of False Self-Importance39:32 Three Authorities in Vedic System41:00 Internal Spiritual Guidance43:17 Alignment of Spiritual Authorities45:13 Universal Accessibility of Spiritual Realization46:19 Divine Assistance for Sincere Seekers48:05 Recognition of Spiritual Truth49:30 Encouragement and Final Thoughts50:35 Kirtan Meditation**************************************
Acharya das delivers a comprehensive talk on spiritual life and self-evaluation from the perspective of ancient Vedic traditions and yoga systems. This is the first of 2 talks at the annual New Year's Soul Searchers Retreat in New Zealand. Acharya das explores a custom many people adopt around the idea of wanting to do better in the new year, often by making New Year's resolutions. Doing better begins with an examination of how we did the previous year and where to from here. And specifically, how we did spiritually and how to live a more spiritually oriented life. But to ask that question, we need a very clear idea of what ‘spiritual' means. The talk explores this in a very practical manner.

Since the dawn of the twenty-first century, the West has been in crisis. Social unrest, political polarization, and the rise of other great powers—especially China—threaten to unravel today's Western-led world order. Many fear this would lead to global chaos. But the West has never had a monopoly on order.Surveying five thousand years of global history, political scientist Amitav Acharya reveals that world order—the political architecture enabling cooperation and peace among nations—existed long before the rise of the West. Moving from ancient Sumer, India, Greece, and Mesoamerica, through medieval caliphates and Eurasian empires into the present, Acharya shows that humanitarian values, economic interdependence, and rules of inter-state conduct emerged across the globe over millennia. History suggests order will endure even as the West retreats. In fact, the end of Western dominance offers us the opportunity to build a better world, where non-Western nations find more voice, power, and prosperity. Instead of fearing the future, the West should learn from history and cooperate with the Rest to forge a more equitable order. What went wrong with Burma's democratic experiment? How are we to understand the country's turbulent politics in the wake of the 2021 coup? In this conversation with Duncan McCargo, Amitav Acharya talks about his new book on Burma, which draws extensively on communications with young activists he refers to as “thought warriors”. He also discusses the challenges of researching a closed country, and why he decided to write a crossover book that he hopes will reach beyond the usual academic audiences. A decade ago, Burma was full of light and hope. Today, it has descended into darkness and despair. The once promising political and opening up of the country has been set back, possibly for a long time. How did this happen? Why? Many outside observers were surprised by the latest developments, but in some ways they were rather predictable. For those watching Burma the February 2021 coup was in the making for some time. Tragic Nation: Burma--Why and How Democracy Failed (Penguin Random House, 2023) provides a timely and insightful account of the political situation in Burma, assessing why the country experienced the coup, what are the implications for the people of Burma and the Southeast Asian region, and what role the international community can play to prevent Burma becoming a failed state. Amitav Acharya is a distinguished professor and the UNESCO Chair in Transnational Challenges and Governance, School of International Service, American University, Washington, DC. His writings on Southeast Asia include Whose Ideas Matter: Agency and Power in Asian Regionalism (Cornell, 2009). Duncan McCargo is director of the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies and a professor of political science at the University of Copenhagen. Learn more about your ad choices.
