Kala Ramnath is a world-renowned Indian violinist who performs in both the Hindustani classical tradition, and in collaborations that incorporate many styles with Ray Manzarek of The Doors, Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer, Hilary Hahn, Kronos Quartet with Reena Esmail and veena player Jayanthi Kumaresh, and leading orchestras such as my own National Arts Centre, to name but a few. You'll hear about her childhood, and how she became a disciple of the legendary vocalist Pandit Jasraj, leading her to revolutionize her approach to Hindustani violin technique. As a teacher she has put together an incredible resource with an extensive video library that she's created of Indian music, Indianclassicalmusic.com When I recorded this interview with Kala, she had just the day before returned from the celebration of life for the legendary tabla master Zakir Hussain, who died this past December, and was one of the most important musicians in both Indian music and in bringing a global audience to Indian music. He had moved to San Francisco in the 1960s and was involved in too many projects to begin to list; in 2024 he was the first musician from India to receive 3 Grammys at one ceremony, including his collaboration with Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer. Zakir Hussain was an incredibly important mentor of Kala, and you'll hear in her words about what his guidance and collaborations meant to her. Kala talked to me about some of her many cross-genre collaborations, including her fantastic albums with tabla master Bikram Ghosh and her inventive trio with George Brooks and Gwyneth Wentink and you'll hear some of that music as well (albums linked below). Renowned Indian poet, lyricist, and filmmaker Gulzar has been conferred with the 58th Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honour in India, annually presented by the Bharatiya Jnanpith. The announcement was made by the Jnanpith committee, recognising Gulzar's exceptional contributions to literature and cinema. Alongside Sanskrit scholar Jagadguru Rambhadracharya, Gulzar was celebrated for his multifaceted career, spanning poems, songs, and dialogues for iconic Hindi films such as Anand, Kabhi Kabhi, and Ijaazat. The official statement highlighted Gulzar's innovation in poetry, notably introducing the genre 'Triveni,' a non-mukaffa poem of three lines. The maestro's recent focus on children's poetry was also acknowledged, adding another dimension to his illustrious career. Gulzar, born Sampooran Singh Kala, has previously been honoured with the Academy Award, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Padma Bhushan, Grammy, and multiple National Film Awards.
Gulzar, the modern day bard has songs (and stories and dialogues) for all occasions. Few others can speak of ardent love with such brevity-“Tere bina zindagi se koi shikwa to nahi…” or be in sync with the rhythms of a playful child, “Sare ke Sare Gama ko le kar…” or my personal favorite- an apt comment on the human condition- “Goli maro bheje mein, bheja shor karta hai.” In this story, a child learns some life lessons overnight. ------------ Gulzar winner of Sahitya Akademi award and Dada Sahib Phalke Award. Bound by faith: KumbhKumbh Mela is organized in four different cities across India at an interval of four years. However, its grandest expression is witnessed in the floodplains of Prayagraj on the banks of the Ganga river just before the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna. Here believers and nonbelievers, preacher and seeker, tourists and journalists all converge to become a part of the sea of humanity and faith. However, beyond the din and dust of the largest congregation on earth, each seeker quietly treads the lone path of their spiritual journey. You can follow Keshav Chaturvedi on social media:Facebook: ( https://www.facebook.com/keshav.chaturvedi.37/ )LinkedIn: ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/keshavchaturvedi/ )Instagram: ( https://www.instagram.com/keshavchaturvedi9/ )Twitter: ( https://twitter.com/keshavchat )You can listen to this show and other awesome shows on the IVM Podcasts app on Android: https://ivm.today/android or iOS: https://ivm.today/ios, or any other podcast app.
Mary Angelon Young is a writer, world traveler, and workshop leader whose journey on the spiritual path began in 1968, when she came of age at eighteen. She practiced and studied in the Baul path—a synthesis of bhakti and tantra originated by the heretical poet-bards of Bengal—for twenty years as an intimate companion of her guru, American Baul Khepa Lee Lozowick, in the lineage of the south Indian beggar saint Yogi Ramsuratkumar and his guru, Swami Ramdas, of Kerala. For the past three decades Angelon has traveled extensively in India, Europe and North America with many pilgrimage forays to sacred sites. During her (pre-pandemic) traveling years, she has had unique opportunities to spend time in the rare company of her mahaguru, Yogi Ramsuratkumar, and to know and travel with Baul luminaries such as Sanatan Das Baul and his spiritual daughter, Parvathy Baul, Gour Khepa, and Purna Das Baul and family, as well as to know teachers and experienced practitioners of many different traditions. Angelon has published over ten books of nonfiction about the spiritual path, including Under the Punnai Tree, a biography of Yogi Ramsuratkumar (2002). Her most recent book of non-fiction, The Art of Contemplation, was published in 2021 by Hohm Press and is available on Amazon and other sites. After the death of her guru in 2010, Angelon's creative passion turned toward writing novels of historical fiction with spiritual underpinnings. Her first published title in that genre is Krishna's Heretic Lovers, the true story of Bengali poet Chandidas and his lifelong love, Rami, in fourteenth century Baul. Formally trained in Jungian studies, Angelon has a master's degree in transpersonal psychology; as a psychotherapist, she taught mythology, dreamwork, and transpersonal psychology at Prescott College in Arizona. Her workshops in the U.S. and Europe offer a direct experience of art and creativity as inner path, specifically using writing, poetry, memoir, and devotional song as doorways to self-knowledge, innate wisdom (sahaja), and cultivating the contemplative life as a way of personal transformation. Her life experience and love of storytelling, myth, and the language of symbols enrich her workshops and public talks with the rasa (nectar) of unexpected divine moods. A mother and grandmother, Angelon continues to write and teach from her off-grid home in the high desert mountains of Arizona, where she lives with her husband, Thomas Raffaele Young in the sanctuary of Triveni, her guru's ashram. maryangelonyoung.com

The Nifty50 is witnessing a fresh expansion phase after breaking out downsloping channel formation where 18,000-18,200 is an immediate target zone. If Nifty manages to take out 18,200 level then the bulls will eye for a fresh all-time high. On the downside, the cluster of 50 and 100-DMA (daily moving average), around 17,500 level will act as an immediate and strong support level at any pullback while 17,300-17,150 is the next demand zone. Momentum indicator RSI (relative strength index) has moved above the 60 mark that may generate thrust for further upside. Nifty is giving proper follow-up of bullish reversal morning star candlestick formation on the weekly chart. Bank Nifty is also witnessing a strong move after crossing the cluster of 20-DMA and 200-DMA in the 35,700-35,800 area. The upside momentum may continue, however, 37,200-37,600 is a critical resistance zone where we can expect a pullback because 37,200 is a cluster of 50&100-DMA and 37,580 is a previous swing high. On the downside, 36,500 is an immediate support level while 36,000-35,700 is a critical demand zone.

After erasing morning gains and hitting a low of 59,084 in early deals, bulls lifted the BSE Sensex index over 853 points from the day's low. The index finally settled 673 points, or 1.14 per cent, higher at 59,856. Its NSE counterpart Nifty50, too, zoomed 181 points to settle above the 17,800-mark at 17,807. NTPC, which gained over 5 per cent, was the top Nifty gainer. It was followed by ONGC, PowerGrid, SBI, Titan and RIL. On the downside, Tata Motors, Coal India, Sun Pharma, Shree Cement, and Tata Consumer Products capped the upsides for the index. The broader markets, on the other hand, underperformed the benchmarks by a wide margin. The BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices ended with small gains of 0.05 per cent and 0.4 per cent, respectively. Sectorally, banking shares were largely responsible for the up move throughout the day. The Nifty Bank index closed 1.2% up, led by gains in SBI, Axis Bank, Kotak Bank, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank. Another winner was the Oil & Gas index, which closed 1.3% higher. ONGC, Reliance, Gujarat Gas, GAIL, and IOC clocked gains ranging between 0.9 and 4%. The IT index, which was an underperformer in the early part of the day, also recouped losses and closed in the positive zone. Pharma, on the other hand, could not recover and ended 0.8% lower. The shares of sugar companies were also in demand. They rallied as much as 20 per cent amid heavy volumes on a strong outlook. Triveni Engineering & Industries soared over 12 per cent, crossing its previous high level hit on December 28 on the BSE. Similarly, Balrampur Chini Mills surged over 14% to touch a new record high level. Others such as Dwarikesh Sugar and Uttam Sugar closed 20% higher on the BSE. Rating agency CRISIL expects sugar mills to see improvement in both revenue and profitability in the 2022 season on the back of a 16-17 per cent rise in sugar prices. That apart, among stocks, share prices of Tata group companies Tata Teleservices Maharashtra and Automotive Stampings & Assembles were locked at the 5% upper circuit on the BSE. The stock prices of the two companies have zoomed over 2,400 per cent in the past one year, as against a 23% rise in the Sensex during this period. On the down side, mining major Vedanta was among the top losers as the stock crashed over 6% on the BSE. Investors seemed to have been unimpressed with the company's aluminium output numbers for the Oct-Dec quarter. Once again selling pressure in Indian markets was witnessed as traders look cautious ahead of key decisions by Federal Reserve and other central banks. The sentiments were also got dampened as markets weighed Omicron risks. On derivative front, Call writers added hefty open interest at 17500 & 17600 strike while marginal Put writing was observed at 17300 & 17200 strike. The technical indicators suggest that volatility is likely to grip market in upcoming sessions as well. However, Nifty has completed one leg of correction, after a steep run-up seen last week and now the index is currently trading near important retracement support levels which are placed at 17,200 & 17,100 levels. The key hurdle would be 17,500 & 17,600 levels for upcoming sessions. One can expect a sideways moment in upcoming sessions and final direction will be clear once we see either side breakout from mentioned range.

Nifty has been consolidating for the last six weeks in a weekly closing range of 14,550-15,200. On March 19, the index found support in the gap zone of 14,336-14,469 and registered a sharp recovery. On the same day, Nifty formed a bullish piercing line candlestick pattern on the daily chart, indicating a short-term bullish reversal. This week has started with a narrow move where Nifty has formed a small inside bar on the daily chart. It is yet to form the lower bottom on the weekly line charts to confirm the downtrend. The lower top is already in place but the lower bottom is yet to be confirmed as Nifty is still maintaining its level above the previous bottom of 14,529 on the weekly closing basis. Last week, Nifty found support on the upward sloping trendline on the weekly charts which indicates that the primary uptrend is still there. Sectors with positive bias are FMCG, metal, energy and IT. Selective NBFC stocks also look good. Indicators and oscillators like RSI, MACD and DMI have not been showing any sign of strength in the index.

Last fall, video software provider, Synamedia, and program guide, metadata management and data broadcasting company, Triveni Digital, announced a partnership to facilitate broadcasters’, content providers’ and service providers’ transition to the new ATSC 3.0 standard—a transition that will require that ATSC 3.0 solutions support simultaneous broadcasts of both ATSC 3.0 and ATSC 1.0 signals. According to the companies, Triveni’s Digital Broadcast Chain will provide architectural support on a unified platform for a coherent workflow across both services, while Synamedia’s compression technology and other solutions will allow broadcasters to repack existing ATSC 1.0 and free up the bandwidth needed to launch new ATSC 3.0 services. The companies also revealed that they had jointly secured a deployment with a “major US television production company.”In this recorded interview with ITVT Editor-in-Chief, Tracy Swedlow, Sabine Bravo, VP of Business Development at Synamedia, and Triveni Digital President and CEO, Mark Simpson, discuss the companies’ integrated offering—which they will be showcasting at CES next week—and share their insights on the transition to ATSC 3.0 and other industry developments.itvt.com/subscribe for more podcasts

For our last episode of our Summer Series, we are talking with Dr. Paula Lum and Dr. Triveni DeFries, both physician activists of the UCSF Primary Care Addiction Medicine Fellowship. In this episode, we talk more about the historical and racial roots of the socially constructed phenomena of “the opioid epidemic”. In addition, we talk about how structural and social determinants have affected historical and current drug epidemics, including the rising methamphetamine epidemic going on now. We most importantly talk about how health professionals must de-stigmatize the culture of shame around drug use both in patient care and within our institutions through our words, actions, and activism. We also talk about how to expand resources in our hospitals and communities in order to address drug epidemics and their associated stigma and shame for people affected. We hope this episode serves as a call to action for many people to address personal and institutional biases about people and communities affected by the rise of current drug epidemics. Most of all, we hope this episode brings compassion and humanity to these very real issues of our communities. Also check out our brotha Max's podcast “Flip the Script” episodes “Opioids in Black and White” Pt. 1 and 2 for further context on the current opioid epidemic! https://soundcloud.com/yaleuniversity/opioids-in-black-and-white-pt-ii-imani?in=yaleuniversity/sets/flip-the-script Bios: Paula J. There’s so much to talk about with this week’s guest, Ninorah Fernandes-Brookshire and I’m delighted to have her on the show. Nino is the co-founder of NRI Women, a platform supporting non-resident Indian women across the world. It has now grown to be a community of over 3,000 women living in a multitude of countries. You’ll hear Nino talking in this episode about how Indians traditionally "do not like to air their dirty laundry in public" as she puts it, but moving internationally away from strong family and community connections is HARD, and the organisation aims to support and nurture women through the transition and challenges they may face. Earlier this year Nino and her co-founder and friend Bettina started the NRI Woman podcast, showcasing the stories of Indian women abroad and telling their stories to a wider audience. Nino also co-founded the Naya Jeevan foundation with her husband Edward, an NGO that partners and supports the work of the Rescue Foundation, a multi-award winning charity based in Mumbai that fights human trafficking of girls into prostitution. The Rescue Foundation, led by an engaging and determined woman named Mrs. Triveni, a former investigative journalist, has so far rescued over 5,000 girls from prostitution all over India, pursuing prosecution for their pimps and captors, and rehabilitating these girls through education, healthcare and counselling. Numbers are hard to gather accurately but NGOs estimate that somewhere between 20 and 65 million Indians are trafficked year. Men, women and children are trafficked for diverse reasons but the abduction of girls and their brutal forcing into prostitution is a major problem. NinO has lived around the world and has a wealth of stories about her fundraising by walking a frozen river in -25C conditions, running a marathon in someone else's shoes (literally), her business, Nindi Bindis and her passion for tribal belly dancing. This is a varied and ranging conversation that I really enjoyed so have a listen now!
