In this episode of The Eric Ries Show, I sit down with Craig Newmark, the founder of Craigslist—one of the internet's most influential platforms. Despite its massive impact, Craigslist has remained intentionally minimalist, resisting the hyper-monetization strategies common in tech. Craig attributes his success to being in the right place at the right time, but his story reveals a deeper truth: a steadfast commitment to his values. We discuss how his moral compass shaped Craigslist, his approach to business sustainability, and his perspective on ethical entrepreneurship. In this episode, we cover: • The origins of Craigslist as a simple email newsletter • Why Craig resisted aggressive monetization and focused on community impact • The market research behind Craigslist's minimal fees • How Craigslist maintained its mission even after Craig stepped back from leadership • Craig's thoughts on AI, cybersecurity, and the future of journalism • How Craig's strong relationship with customers kept him aligned with his values • Craig's philanthropic work • Craig's advice for new founders • And more! — Brought to you by: Vanta – Automate compliance, manage risk, and prove trust—continuously. We dive into some of Christmas' spooky history and Dickens' influence on the depictions of the holiday in media. Cullen outs himself as a Nephew Freddie, Hannah reveals why she's not a fan of The Muppets, T shivers at the sight of the Ghost of Christmas Past, and Cait flexes their English teacher muscles with lots of great insights into the book. In this engaging conversation, actress, activist, and all-around beautiful human, Yvette Nicole Brown, gives us a lesson on the fundamental importance of joy, the blessings of caregiving, and the significance of community support. Through an exploration of Yvettes' career, first in the music business, and now in the entertainment industry, she and Jen and Amy discuss the many challenges that face black women today while also talking about one of black women's greatest superpowers – the sisterhood that exists among them. They lean into how white women can learn to harness that power in their relationships, too, and the things that can be done to support their sisters of color right now. Yvette also reflects on her personal life as a devoted caregiver, and dishes for a moment about the beauty of finding love in your late 50s. *** Thought-provoking Quotes: “I don't know as a kid that I ever thought that I would be a star. I always felt that I would be impactful in people's lives in some way because of the way that I love people.” – Yvette Nicole Brown “I am still pinching myself. I'm Forrest Gump in the flesh – in real life – because I just say yes to things that feel right and God just takes me to the next opportunity to do the same.” – Yvette Nicole Brown “That's why black women are always so close with each other because whenever you see a ‘sista', you know her story, without knowing her story. That's why we call each other ‘sista', because we know what she's been through. Same thing with black men. ‘Brotha'. ‘Sista'. We know what the other person has been through and we stand with each other and support each other. But here's the thing, we stand with and support everybody else too. And that's why we say ‘vote like black women, think like black women'. That's not hubris. That's not arrogance. That's heart. That's soul.” – Yvette Nicole Brown “When it comes to anything that comes up in the news, culture, current events, whatever's going on, if I feel even a modicum of uncertainty about how to feel about it, I just look to the black women. It's the correct reading of the room. The response is always for the greater good. It's what's good for culture, for people, our neighbors, progress, equality.” – Jen Hatmaker “Instead of me showing you my pain, I'm going to use my joy as my strength and I'm going to dance and laugh through this thing.” – Yvette Nicole Brown Resources Mentioned in This Episode: I Take My Coffee Black: Reflections on Tupac, Musical Theater, Faith, and Being Black in America by Tyler Merritt - https://amzn.to/3U6nMfN Yvette's acting and producing credits - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1304328/ Kamala Harris for President - https://kamalaharris.com/ How Black Women Organizers Broke Zoom to Raise $1.5 Million - Fortune.com K-Pops by Anderson .Paak at Toronto International Film Festival - https://tiff.net/events/k-pops Frasier - https://www.paramountplus.com/shows/frasier-2023/ Among Us - https://www.innersloth.com/voice-cast-for-the-among-us-animated-series-round-1/ Donors Choose - https://www.donorschoose.org/ The Creative Coalition Commission on Caregiving - https://thecreativecoalition.org/caregiving/ Emily's List Guest's Links: Yvette's website - http://www.actressyvettenicolebrown.com/ Yvette's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/yvettenicolebrown Yvette's Twitter - https://x.com/ynb Yvette's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/YvetteNBrown/ Yvette's Squeezed Docupodcast - https://lemonadamedia.com/show/squeezed/ Connect with Jen! The unprecedented mental health crisis for children in the United States often surfaces where they spend much of their days: school. With that in mind, Google's philanthropic arm is directly financing high school well-being projects on a classroom crowdfunding platform. Google.org on August 12 flash funded all mental health-related listings on DonorsChoose, an online charity where members help purchase supplies requested by public school teachers. With $10 million in new gifts and the help of actress Selena Gomez, the Silicon Valley giant hopes to center mindfulness as an educational goal at the start of the academic calendar. Districts have turned to teachers for psychological help after the coronavirus pandemic brought alarming levels of childhood depression, anxiety, and fights. But experts say that increased attention has not translated to more philanthropic money overall toward mental health. The move comes amid widespread criticism and lawsuits claiming Google-owned YouTube and other social media sites have fueled the childhood mental health crisis by deliberately designing addictive features. Justin Steele, Google.org's Director for America, said its initiative highlights Google's efforts to lead this “important conversation” and “be one part of contributing to positive solutions.” Its internet browser's own data has showcased the rising interest; Steele said searches for “teen mental health” doubled over the last four years. Google.org is giving $6 million overall to DonorsChoose. The technology company also announced $1.5 million in donations to the Jed Foundation, the Steve Fund and Child Mind Institute—groups focused on emotional well-being among young adults, people of color and children, respectively. Gomez's Rare Impact Fund, which seeks to drive more money into this “underfunded field,” is receiving $1.25 million. The “Only Murders in the Building” star has been vocal about her own bipolar diagnosis. In a blog post, Gomez said she knows firsthand that “caring adults” can make a big difference for teenagers. “As young people find their way through the world, it's crucial that they get guidance in building healthy, positive, and productive mental health habits,” Gomez wrote. “Few people are in a better position to help do this than teachers.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Get an early bird discount by July 1st when you join the 40 Hour Teacher Workweek Full Year program! The full transcript of this announcement is below. ---- Hey there, it's Angela, I just wanted to release a quick announcement letting you know that our 40 Hour Workweek programs are now open for early bird access for the 2024-2025 school year! I'm going to share the updates first for those who are already familiar with 40 Hour or have enrolled in the past. If you're brand new and have no idea what 40 Hour is, keep listening to the end, and I'll fill you in. We're releasing a brand new membership called 40 Hour AI, which is designed to help you integrate artificial intelligence tools into your workflows to make teaching more effective and efficient. It's for folks who are worried about the ethics of generative AI and don't want to just dive in and hope everything works out. And it's for folks who have tried GPT, but felt like they had to rework the output so much they might as well have written from scratch. (I get that–if you don't know how to use AI well, it can actually take more time than writing something yourself.) It's also designed for teachers who like using AI but feel overwhelmed with all the possibilities. I get emails from all the Ai tools designed for educators and it feels like they release 10 new features every single week. If you're working full-time in the classroom, there's no possible way to keep up with all of that on top of everything else. The curation piece is where I come in. It's my job to shorten that steep learning curve, so AI can become like your own personal teaching assistant right away. 40 Hour AI is a brand new (and ever-growing) collection of video trainings to help you feel confident about using artificial intelligence to streamline your workload in an ethical, responsible way: ✅ Watch the on-demand trainings that show you only what you NEED to know to trim hours off your workweek. The foundational videos have no fluff or filler, and will help you quickly learn the basics of AI, an overview of the free AI tools available to teachers, and the ethical considerations. ✅ Learn to incorporate AI into your existing work habits so it's your go-to tool instead of an afterthought (without having to completely change systems that already work well for you). ✅ Utilize the ever-growing collection of 5 minute timesaver how-to's anytime you feel stuck on how to complete a teaching task with AI. You'll know exactly which AI tool to use and how to get the results you want. The downloadable prompt resources will help you phrase your request for great AI output on rubrics, SMART goals, lesson plan ideas, text differentiation, and more. ✅ Discover new AI tools and uses that have been vetted by knowledgeable educators so you don't have to spend hours on trial-and-error. You won't have to look anywhere else to feel up-to-date: new video trainings are added on a monthly basis so you always have the most recent information. I'm creating some of these myself, and others will be shared with you directly from our 40 Hour graduates who are current classroom teachers. They'll show you exactly how they're using AI everyday to save time. ✅ Use the private discussion community to stay updated even if you don't have time to watch training videos. It's held within the membership site (not on social media), and you can stay in the loop and ask questions there anytime. As always with my resources, the goal is to help you avoid overwhelm and cut through the noise. You don't need to know EVERYTHING that's possible with AI up front. (Who has time for that?) You just need the MOST impactful ways to streamline your teaching workload now, and a way to quickly get answers when you need help with a task. A free year's unlimited access pass to 40 Hour AI is included when you enroll in the 40 Hour Full year program. I made the decision to do this because I'm going to be talking a lot about AI tools in the coming school year with the current 40 Hour Full Year cohort, and I didn't want some of the cohort to have access to the AI recommendations and some not have it. If you're not ready to explore AI tools like MagicSchool, Eduade, Brisk Teaching, and so on, you can just utilize the core 40 Hour Full Year materials, which don't discuss AI at all. I know some folks are apprehensive or just not interested in artificial intelligence, so I made the choice not to change the Full Year program, which doesn't mention AI. Full Year is focused on classic productivity and organizaitonal systems which generally stand the test of time. The awesome thing about keeping the AI materials in a separate membership is that I can update them frequently. The AI trainings are short videos around 5 minutes each, and other materials that I can quickly make changes to as the technology develops constantly. I know that making AI trainings for teachers is going to be a major undertaking with lots of work to keep everything current. I'm committed to do that–to staying on top of the trends and dvelopemnets and curating them for you so you don't have to explore everything yourself or feel overwhelmed with constant changes. I'm weeding through everything that's out there and finding only the best stuff and the most effective, efficient ways to streamline your workload. The way I chose to set up 40 Hour AI is as a membership rather than forever-access like the rest of my courses, including the 40 Hour Full Year program. If I can be really real with you…I've crunched the numbers, and it just isn't financially viable for me to offer them as a one-time payment for forever-access. So, 40 Hour AI is set up to allow you to purchase an unlimited access pass to all the trainings for $29/quarter or $89/year. I do have a discount code for folks who have taken other 40 Hour courses in the past, and those have been sent out via email (and will be sent again a couple of times, as well as listed in the 40 Hour course materials you have access to, so you can find it there if you missed the initial announcement.) To sum up so far: if you previously enrolled in our 40 Hour Teacher Workweek Full Year program, you get the unlimited access pass (quarterly or annual) for a discount. If you never enrolled in 40 Hour before, 40 Hour AI is open to you now, so you can start learning about artificial intelligence right away. You can just get the AI stuff is that's all you want. The other option for folks who have never joined the 40 Hour Teacher Workweek Full Year program is to enroll with the latest cohort, and you'll get a free year's unlimited access pass to 40 Hour AI. As a podcast listener, I'm guessing you've heard me mention the program here on the podcast but maybe you've never gotten around to checking it out thoroughly with everything else going on. You might have assumed 40 Hour is for new teachers, or really disorganized people, or those who want to work ONLY their contractual hours. And it is–we have lots of members who fit one (or more) of those descriptions and find the solutions they need in 40 Hour. But, 40 Hour is also designed for experienced educators who are highly skilled at their craft, and questioning whether the increasing demands and pressure will allow them to stay until retirement. These members have witnessed so many changes to the profession that they barely recognize it from 10, 20, or 30 years ago. They need practical advice about how to make everything work (and support figuring out what they can realistically take off their plates.) It's also for folks who love organization and enjoy learning tips and hacks to be more efficient. These teachers join to make small tweaks to their existing systems, and collaborate with other like-minded educators to streamline even more and keep their teaching feeling fresh and creative. And, 40 Hour is for teachers who don't mind working a bit on their own time, but are tired of giving up ALL their evenings and weekends to do documentation, data collection, and other tasks that feel far-removed from helping kids. They want to do more meaningful work and less busywork. Also, some of our members know that working contractual hours isn't realistic in their personal situation, and they're just looking for ways to take 10 or so hours off their workweek. Others aren't paying attention to hours at all: they just want to feel more effective at their jobs and less frazzled and exhausted. It might seem impossible for one program to differentiate for alllll of these different needs, but… There's one thing all 40 Hour members have in common: They're educators who love the job and want to find a SUSTAINABLE approach, so they can stay in the field WITHOUT burning out. So, 40 Hour provides a broad range of tips, strategies, editable templates, and other resources so you can find ideas that work for YOU and your teaching context. Download only the resources that feel relevant and helpful to you each month, and take a few weeks to experiment with them. You can share ideas and troubleshoot with other members. You'll never lose access to the resources, so you can go back to anything you skipped in future years (or try out different ideas if you change grade levels or subject areas later on.) Because of the wide variety of materials, there really is SOMETHING for EVERY K-12 teacher in 40 Hour. And if you join and find that it's not a good fit, you can get a complete refund through Sept. 15th. There are 4 sets of summer planning bonuses included with 40 Hour Full Year which are all about using your summer to get rested and re-energized. You can use them to make a plan for everything you want/need to do during your break, create healthy habits, get organized at home, and more. But, you don't have to start right away. The cohort kicks off July 1st, but lots of members take a break from everything work-related over the summer, and then look at all the July and August materials for back-to-school when they're ready to begin planning. Start whenever it's most convenient for you! This is not a formal course. You don't have to “keep up” or submit any assignments to us (unless your district requires you to). Use 40 Hour as a resource and community to give you ideas and support for managing your workload. Check in whenever you'd like and see what's new. And, it's designed so you don't have to spend a lot of time learning in order to get results. You'll need about 30 minutes a month to explore the Core Concepts (most important ideas). You can either read the PDF or listen to the audio version. If you'd like, you can explore the 3 extension choices, but those are optional. You can create better systems and work habits just with the Core Concepts in 30 minutes a month. With 40 Hour Full Year, you never lose access to the materials and can come back to things you skipped anytime. Revisit the optional extension choices later in the year, or even in future years. This program is designed to help you throughout your teaching career, no matter what, where, or how you're teaching later on. And remember, as a special bonus when you join this year's cohort, you'll receive a FREE 365 day unlimited pass to our 40 Hour AI trainings. The short videos in 40 Hour AI will help you feel confident about using artificial intelligence in an ethical way to help you streamline differentiation, lesson planning, assessment, and more. So, if you teach K-12 general education, I'll hope you'll join us un 40 Hour Full Year or 40 Hour AI, or both! You can enroll on your own, and we accept school purchase orders, gift certificates, and DonorsChoose. 40 Hour Full Year is a professional development program worth up to 104 CEU hours, and will help you adapt and develop new pedagogies in the coming school year. Your job is changing: don't be afraid to ask for the support and training you deserve. So, that's the update on 40 Hour this summer. What is reality? Are we in a simulation? Quantum Gravity Research Founder Klee Irwin joins the Know Thyself podcast today to explore these fundamental questions of existence. He dives deep into The Self-Simulation Hypothesis & Emergence Theory - which he has been studying extensively to solve these very questions. Klee provides insights into the fundamentals of these theories, posing the question of if this IS a simulation, is it: a simulation controlled by a being in another galaxy OR a projection from our future selves. Begging the question of who our future descendants are, if they are still human, and can we communicate with them. This is a fascinating episode to open your mind to possible answers to perplexing questions of reality, and understand the extensive research Klee & his team are doing to bring these topics into mainstream scientific discussion. In part one of our conversation with philanthropist Charles Best, we discussed the 3 Innovations of Crowdfunding, Digital Marketplace and Cause Marketing. In today's concluding segment, we are going to take a deep dive into some of the processes behind those innovations. We'll find out what motivated Charles to choose the non-profit model, how he raised his operating Capital while still teaching high school and his unique method of value-based screening of potential team members. Key Points: Benefits of choosing the non-profit model Value-based screening of potential team members. The art and science of getting to yes when making a pitch to potential donors. So here's the thing. High school kids have about 10,000 things on their agenda just above going to the library to pick out a book. And if they do make it to the library, the librarian (through no fault of their own!) likely won't know them well enough to help them get the book that is going to have them flipping the pages at midnight when they know they should be asleep but the plot is just so amazing they can't help but read. These days I see a classroom library as an absolutely essential part of any high school ELA classroom. They can all be books borrowed from the school library - in fact, that's pretty much always what I did when I was first getting started with choice reading. Or they can be books you gather over the years through donations, book sales, garage sales, and Donors Choose projects. Having books right in your classroom that students can borrow and read in your choice reading program makes a huge difference. Especially if you can showcase some of them covers out and incorporate them into your choice reading system with book talks and fun displays. Charles Best is the founder of DonorsChoose, a nonprofit organization that connects teachers in need of classroom resources with donors who want to help. Charles launched DonorsChoose in 2000 while teaching history at a Bronx high school. His efforts began as a local, independent passion project among peers but went on to be named one of the 50 most Innovative organizations in the world. Today, half of all the public schools in America have at least one teacher who has created a classroom project request on DonorsChoose.org, and more than 5 million people have donated, providing books, art supplies, technology and other resources to students in low-income communities. In this episode, Charles shares the story of what motivated him to take on this philanthropic work as well as the unwavering determination that guided him from grassroots marketing techniques to gaining national attention from The New York Times, Newsweek and Oprah. Buckle up for a wild journey through the world of "Teachers Potlucks", staff discounts, and school funding. Let's just say, things get real, real fast. We kick off the discussion with Vinny laying down the law on when it's okay for teachers to post their wishlists online. Spoiler alert: influencers, you're not off the hook! Then Jess chimes in with her views on platforms like Donors Choose and how they aren't universally accepted. Next, we dive into the dark depths of the school supply struggle. Vinny paints a hilariously grim picture of the quality of schoolroom supplies, with a special focus on the dreaded Chromebooks. Who would willingly choose them? No one, that's who. And we know you've all been wondering - do teacher discounts actually exist? We put this question to rest as Vinny muses on the elusive perks that aren't as publicized as we'd like. From there, we launch into a discussion about staff potlucks. Brace yourselves, as Jess and Vinny avoid "death by crockpot" and questions of why this is considered a reward. And Vinny breaks down the school supply funding disparity in our US vs. UK segment. It wouldn't be a Hot Mess Teacher Express episode without our Grind My Gears session. Get ready for rants about creators asking for money and the maddening phenomenon of people asking easily Google-able questions. Lastly, we shine the spotlight on the unsung heroes in the Underdogs segment - the teachers who sign up for extra duties outside their contracts. So, whether you're a fan of potlucks or loathe them, whether you Google every question or ask away, join us in this hilariously relatable journey through the challenges and oddities of teaching life. If you are listening to this podcast, there's a good chance you are a motivated educator looking for ways to improve your teaching and the classroom experiences of your students. And often that drive to improve comes with a price tag, one that's frequently and unfortunately left to the teacher to pay. My guest today is Dr. Kate Good, and we talk about how she made her vision of flexible seating in her classroom come to life through crowdfunding. Kate is a Dual Language Immersion instructor and teacher mentor in Portland, Oregon. She opted to teach as a summer job 13 years ago, and since then, her teaching career has led her to classrooms in three states and two countries. Kate and I overlapped in graduate school at UNC Chapel Hill, where in 2018 she completed her PhD in Romance Studies. Kate planned to teach Spanish literature at a college or university. Two years later, though, she found herself in a middle school immersion classroom, populated with heritage speakers.Today Kate shares how she re-envisioned her post-pandemic classroom seating arrangement, how this change has positively affected her middle school students, and how she managed to raise the money from outside of her school and without dipping into her own personal bank account to make it happen.Below are links to some of the sites mentioned by Kate in the podcast. 1. Let's be real - teaching is a tough job, and it's not uncommon to feel like throwing in the towel at times. Between unsupportive administrators, heavy workloads, angry parents, disrespectful students, and external pressures from policymakers, it can be overwhelming to find joy in teaching. That's why it's no surprise that many teachers plan to quit after this school year if they haven't already. But if you're feeling burnt out and tired of teaching, and aren't quite ready to give up on your passion, you're in the right place. In this episode, we're exploring five alternatives to quitting teaching that can actually help reignite your love for the profession. From seeking out mentorship and collaboration with fellow educators to exploring leadership roles to taking a sabbatical or pursuing a new specialty, we'll cover actionable tips and strategies to help you find fulfillment and satisfaction in your career as an educator. This week: What does it mean when people say “revolution”? For these purposes, which are pretty narrow and entirely of my own invention, I don't mean some single moment in time, unless it was a bellwether for something bigger. And I don't mean the revolutions that have necessarily most directly impacted me. When I think “revolution” I imagine a building up of…something…that affected most people directly or indirectly, so that's the threshold I'll use here. This list is in no way comprehensive, I'm a generalist bonehead who definitely missed some significant items. I am 40, though I feel like I'm 99, so anyways I'm going to use 1982 as my starting point. YMMV. INI is about looking forward, to understanding where we are and where we might be going, so we can build a better today and tomorrow for everyone. But to do so, it's helpful to look back a little bit to understand how we got here, what's underway, and what might be brewing, for better or worse. Because the more we have our eyes on these currents, the more we can strike at the root to influence them. Here's What You Can Do:⚡️ I love donating to DonorsChoose so much. Teachers need so much more support and should never have to front the cost of essential supplies. According to the 2021 Teacher Spending survey, on average, teachers spent $750 of their own money on learning materials each year, with 30% of teachers stating they spent $1,000 or more. Why are teachers having to pay more and more out of pocket for classroom materials? And how can teachers get the supplies they need more efficiently? Do teachers in low-income communities need different kinds of support? What can we do to combat inequity in school funding? In this episode, Kevin discusses the resources teachers and classrooms need with the CEO of DonorsChoose, Alix Guerrier.

Someone very smart sent me an article just today that talks about the role of humor when we deal with stressful situations/anxiety-creating moments. And on that front: have any of you (and in this moment, I think we're specifically talking to White people) ever felt weighed down by how heavy anti-racism work can be? You maybe noticed that sometimes we're pretty serious on this show… Though I'm a serious, overthinking person sometimes, in real life I'm goofy and I actually make fun of myself quite a lot, texting photos of myself in awful workout outfits to you, you have the driest sense of humor of all the people I know except for your husband like we're not that dry. So what do you all think about listening to about 15 minutes of one of the funniest activist-comedians out there today - hearing how HE, a funny guy, might explain what might be great for White women to do in this work, how to process how tired we all are, and what crocheting has to do with it. What to listen for: Why understanding the history of the United States is important to understanding where we are today What Kamau Bell would tell White women on the whole - including how if we had the same energy for anti-racism that we had for coordinating our kids' summer camps, we would be there by the end of the summer, maybe? There's no issue of oppression in this country that hurts White people that doesn't connect back to really really hurting the Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian, and Latinx populations W. KAMAU BELL is a dad, husband, and comedian. He directed and executive-produced the four-part Showtime documentary We Need To Talk About Cosby, which premiered at Sundance. He famously met with the KKK on his Emmy-Award-winning CNN docu-series United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell, where he serves as host and executive producer. He has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Conan, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, CBS Mornings, MSNBC's Morning Joe, Comedy Central, HBO, Fresh Air with Terry Gross, WTF with Marc Maron, The Breakfast Club, and This American Life. He has two stand-up comedy specials, Private School Negro (Netflix) and Semi-Prominent Negro (Showtime). Kamau's writing has been featured in Time, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, The Hollywood Reporter, CNN.com, Salon, and The LA Review of Books. Kamau's first book has an easy-to-remember title, The Awkward Thoughts of W. Kamau Bell: Tales of a 6' 4", African American, Heterosexual, Cisgender, Left-Leaning, Asthmatic, Black and Proud Blerd, Mama's Boy, Dad, and Stand-Up Comedian. He is the ACLU Artist Ambassador for Racial Justice and serves on the board of directors of Donors Choose and the advisory board of Hollaback! Along with Kate Schatz, he's the co-author of Do the Work: An Anti-Racist Activity Book. For more information, please visit: http://www.wkamaubell.com/, or follow W.
