Going with the flow is easier said than done for some of us, but it is the name of the game in improv, the stage art of unscripted comedy. Founded in 2009, OKC Improv is both an organizer for great community events and a training and performance vehicle for actors and comics of both the serious and aspirational varieties. Executive Director Kendon Lacy is our guest on the show this week. He talks about his personal history with improv, big events coming up at OKC Improv's theater in Oklahoma City's Plaza District, and how interested community members can sign up for classes. Plus your favorite Oklahoma travel podcast hosts give their best effort in some basic improv exercises.  Also on this week's show, the editors discuss their favorite dessert destinations in the state, and podvents brings us some fishy props. You won't want to miss it!

Nobody's A Nobody with Mike McVey

I met Mary Grace two years ago at OKC Improv and we developed a friendship. From the first time I met Mary Grace. I knew she was someone special. In this episode we talk about teaching, Mississippi, popcorn, Taylor Swift, and more.

Nobody's A Nobody with Mike McVey

This week's guest is our friend Laurette Lynn. You might remember her from her season 1, episode 14 where we talked about trust and dealing with the first stages of the pandemic. In this episode we explore what changes have happened in her life over the past two years and if she views the world differently or the same. If you've kept up with me over the past 15 months, you know that I have heavily invested in OKC Improv. It is a non-profit organization that tries to spread awareness of the art form by showcasing world-class talent and offering classes for students to learn various aspects to practice in real life. I specifically an reaching out to those who have teenagers - there are classes starting October 1 for the teens that give you a couple hours to do something else. Both teen and adult classes are available. Check all of this out at okcimprov.com   I absolutely love Laurette. Though we have only known each other 7 years, she really does feel like a lifelong friend. I hope you enjoy this show as we touch base!

Whether it's your favorite rapper freestyling or Wayne Brady pulling out a full on song from thin air, improvising lyrics, melodies, and harmonies takes some serious skill.  Or does it?  Today we’re talking to Kendan Lacy and Kyle Gossett of OKC Improv! In previous episodes, we’ve touched on basic improv stuff and played plenty of short form games similar to who’s line is it anyway. Today we’re taking what we have learned and expanding on it to performing musical improv. Can you come up with lyrics off the top of your head? Can you go with the flow and sing a full on duet that neither of you have heard before? Kendan and Kyle pull back the veil and reveal the secrets behind the magic.  Disclaimer: We had an issue with one of the mics that we didn’t catch until after the interview. So we apologize in advance for it not sounding the best it could have been. Argh. Technology is frustrating sometimes.  SHOW NOTES: 02:35- Lauren Belflower(Susan from The Bra’d Squad) is guest cohost today! 04:35- Welcome Kyle Gossett and Kendan Lacy from OKC Improv 07:15- Improv teaches you great social skills  14:35- Revisiting the rules of improv (yes and, no judgements, listen, etc.) 19:35- What is a “gift”? 27:05- Introduction to musical improv 33:05- Short form musical improv games 35:35- Brian and Lauren attempt game: “Sad, Sadder, Saddest” 39:50- Short form game: “Compilation Album” 44:50- Creating an ensemble with harmonies on the fly 51:05- See one of Kyle and Kendan’s shows!  LINKS:  https://www.facebook.com/bitsingmusical/ www.okcimprov.com (http://www.okcimprov.com) www.patreon.com/okieshowshow Support this podcast
