CEO, Jonah Nelson shares his caring and insightful way he works with his employees at Family Tree Nursery. People think we're in the plant business. We are—but that's only half the story. We don't just grow plants, we grow people. Every day, someone here learns how to take responsibility for something living. They learn timing, judgment, resilience. They learn that growth can't be rushed—and that showing up matters more than shortcuts. If we do our jobs right, the plants thrive. But more importantly, the people do. And that's the harvest I'm most proud of.
This month, Children's Minnesota will pause some gender-affirming care. The health system announced Tuesday that starting Feb. 27, it will stop prescribing puberty blockers and hormones to patients under 18. Hospitals and clinics around the country are under pressure from the Trump Administration. It's proposed ending Medicaid and Medicare funding for providers that continue these treatments to minors. One of the providers that will likely take on patients who had gone to Children's Minnesota is Family Tree Clinic. MPR News host Kelly Gordon spoke with Family Tree's Executive Director Annie Van Avery to explain the significance of the decision.
Following an update on Tom's mom's overseas end-of-life saga, the dads discuss a listener email about genealogy, family trees, and shared family history. This week in our Family Tree series, we talked about how real growth happens when we stay connected to Jesus, the true vine. We reflected on what it looks like to be a church that welcomes everyone, keeps Jesus at the center, and lives out His love in everyday ways through unity, generosity, and service. Let's move beyond simply showing up and instead choose to belong, participate, and invest in what God is growing among us.
Join us in the first message of our new series, Family Tree, as we reflect on the power of being rooted in Christ by exploring Jesus' family story and Hope Fellowship's story. Through Scripture and shared history, we're reminded that our roots give us identity, stability, and gratitude.
Genealogy has a built-in problem that never goes away. You are trying to rebuild real lives from records that real people created, and people get things wrong. Sometimes the mistake is innocent, like a clerk mishearing a name or a census taker writing down a guess. Sometimes the mistake is intentional, like someone shaving off years, changing a birthplace, or hiding a first marriage. Even permanent things like headstones can be wrong, because the person ordering it may not have known the exact date, or the stone cutter may have carved it incorrectly. Indexes and transcriptions help us find records, but they also introduce new errors. One wrong letter can split a family into two or merge two separate families into one. Online trees can spread those mistakes fast. After enough copying, a guess can start to look like a fact, just because you see it everywhere. So how do you know when your research is accurate, or at least accurate enough that you would feel comfortable publishing it and building on it? You will never get perfect certainty in every case. Genealogy deals with missing records, confusing handwriting, reused names, shifting county lines, and stories that have been polished over time. Still, you can get to strong confidence by using a few basic checks that experienced researchers use again and again. These checks help you spot weak links early, before they become bigger problems... The long list of names in Matthew's genealogy feels distant and hard to pronounce, so we move on quickly. But Matthew didn't include those names by accident. He placed them there to ground the Christmas story in real history. Jesus didn't drop out of the sky. He entered the world through a real family—full of faith, failure, courage, compromise, and grace.Matthew organizes Jesus' family tree into three groups of fourteen generations. First come the patriarchs, from Abraham to David—the rise of a family. Then come the kings, from David to the exile—the ruin of a kingdom. Finally comes the remnant, from the exile to Jesus—the long road toward restoration. Last week we looked at the outsiders in Jesus' lineage: Tamar, Rahab, and Ruth. This week we turn to the kings. You might expect the kings to be the highlight reel—strong leaders, noble faith, spiritual consistency. Instead, what we find is a royal mess. To understand it, we'll look at three kings from the southern kingdom of Judah: a father, a son, and a grandson. Their stories show how faith can be passed down, rejected, reclaimed, and lost again.King Ahaz: The Shadow of a Bad LegacyBy the time Ahaz became king, Israel was divided. The northern kingdom had fully embraced wickedness. Judah, the southern kingdom—where Jesus' line continued—was struggling to stay faithful. Ahaz did not help.2 Kings 16:2–3 (NLT) tells us that Ahaz “did not do what was pleasing in the sight of the Lord… Instead, he followed the example of the kings of Israel, even sacrificing his own son in the fire.”In the ancient world, people believed that if you wanted the gods to act, you had to give them something valuable. Ahaz was losing a war and terrified of losing his throne. In desperation, he went to the Valley of Ben Hinnom and sacrificed his own son to Molech. That valley later became known as Gehenna—the word Jesus used for hell.Ahaz's legacy is devastating. He sacrificed his son on the altar of selfishness. Before we judge him too quickly, we should ask an uncomfortable question: What do we sacrifice our children to today? Career success, personal freedom, reputation, comfort, or misplaced ambition can quietly become modern altars.King Hezekiah: The Cycle BreakerAfter Ahaz died, his son Hezekiah took the throne. He grew up surrounded by idolatry. He had watched his father's choices destroy lives. Everything about his upbringing suggested he would repeat the cycle. But 2 Kings 18:5–7 (NLT) says something remarkable: “Hezekiah trusted in the Lord… There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah.”Hezekiah broke the cycle. He tore down idols—even destroying the bronze serpent Moses had made because people were worshiping it...
Title: A Better Family TreeScripture Reading: Matthew 1:1-2, 16-17Series: A Better StoryIn this episode of A Better Story, co-host Katie Hartline joins the discussion to unpack the surprisingly messy family tree of Jesus found in Matthew 1. We explore why God chose to include outsiders, deceivers, and even a king who practiced human sacrifice in the lineage of the Messiah. Discover how this "unsanitized" genealogy proves that God doesn't just fix the past—He redeems it, offering hope to every broken family and individual today.
Matthew reveals the Israelite lineage of Jesus, reminding us that God works in the messiness of life and invites us to grow in faith. (Lectionary #193) December 17, 2025 - Cathedral Rectory - Superior, WI Fr. Andrew Ricci - www.studyprayserve.com

The genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1 reveals God's incredible plan to use imperfect people for His perfect purposes. Five women are mentioned in Christ's lineage, each with a shocking story: Tamar the deceiver, Rahab the prostitute, Ruth the foreigner, Bathsheba the victim, and Mary the humble servant. Their inclusion demonstrates that God justifies sinners, welcomes outsiders, and redeems broken stories. Jesus came from a dysfunctional family tree filled with prostitutes, murderers, and victims of abuse, yet His legacy changed the world. Your family background doesn't define your future—God can use your story for His glory.
In this message, Clay Scroggins looks at the name Immanuel: God With Us in our Family Tree series and unpacks a life-giving truth: God doesn't wait for our lives or families to get cleaned up before He shows up. He steps into the mess with us. The Bible recounts Jesus' family tree - a lineage filled with outsiders, messiness, scandals, and deeply flawed people. From the lives of these complicated people, the Savior of the world descended. Jesus entered history to bring hope, grace, and redemption, not only to His family tree, but to the line of every family.
Jesus was related to prostitutes and people involved in terrible sin. Yet He came as the perfect Jewish King, the son of Abraham and David. The Christmas story is often painted as clean, calm, and magical. The reality is Christmas is Jesus stepping directly into the chaos, pain, and injustice of our world. When we look at the genealogy of Jesus we realize that He came from a broken story so that people with broken stories would know they still belong. The real story is raw and far more hopeful.
Matthew 1:1–17 - [1] The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. [2] Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, [3] and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, [4] and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, [5] and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, [6] and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, [7] and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, [8] and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, [9] and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, [10] and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, [11] and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. [12] And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, [13] and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, [14] and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, [15] and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, [16] and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. [17] So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.
