The Christmas story is often painted as clean, calm, and magical. The reality is Christmas is Jesus stepping directly into the chaos, pain, and injustice of our world. When we look at the genealogy of Jesus we realize that He came from a broken story so that people with broken stories would know they still belong. The real story is raw and far more hopeful.
The New Testament begins with a family tree, showing Jesus as the heir of the promises of God to Abraham and David. But when we see who is listed, we discover an unexpected genealogy for a Messiah. What can this teach us about God's purposes in Jesus?

Matthew 1:1–17 - [1] The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. [2] Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, [3] and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, [4] and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, [5] and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, [6] and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, [7] and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, [8] and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, [9] and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, [10] and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, [11] and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. [12] And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, [13] and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, [14] and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, [15] and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, [16] and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. [17] So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. Text: Matthew 1:5; Joshua 2 & 6; Hebrews 11:31; variousTheme: Strangely, as the Bible talks about Rahab, it seems to always mention she was a prostitute. It can't be because God wouldn't let her forget her past, but maybe so we'd be encouraged to forget ours. Your past does not define you!Memory Verse: Hebrews 11:31 (NIV) By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient. In Matthew 1, we contemplate the unique and dysfunctional family trees that we are born into…and that Jesus Himself was born into as well. His own family tree underscores the truth that Christ came to redeem our dysfunctions and make us part of His forever tree – the family of God.
This week's message reminded us that being God's chosen people is not a privilege of superiority, but a calling to responsibility, humility, and faithfulness. Through Isaiah's vision, we saw how God confronts the sin and pride of His people—yet still promises redemption through the “shoot from the stump of Jesse,” pointing to the coming Messiah. Pastor Kurt contrasted Israel's spiritual complacency with historical moments when pride led nations astray, reminding us that only a faithful remnant truly hears God's call. Even as we face our own moments of failure and conviction, God purifies, forgives, and pours out His Spirit so we may stand firm in Christ. The hope of Advent is that from the very places where life feels cut down, God brings new growth, new faithfulness, and new life in Jesus.
Matthew's genealogy presents Jesus as the royal Son of David, the promised Seed of Abraham who will bless all nations, and the Savior who redeems a family tree—and a world—marred by startling sin and scandal. Matthew 1:1-17 For more resources on this teaching please visit https://brcc.church/teachings/surprise-family-tree/
In the opening message of our Christmas series Names of the Nativity, Pastor Mark takes us into Matthew 1:1–17 and the often-overlooked genealogy of Jesus with today's message, "The Family Tree of Jesus." Far from a list of names to skim past, this family tree tells a powerful story of how God works through all kinds of people.Pastor Mark highlights three groups woven into Jesus' lineage: the faithful, who walked with God; the failures, whose broken stories God redeemed; and the forgotten, those history barely remembers but God intentionally included. This message reminds us that if God used them to carry the light of Christ into the world, He can use us too. Join us as we discover how our own stories fit into the ongoing work of God's grace this Christmas season.

In today's 3rd episode of Season Ten, host Andrew Martin is joined by tech nerd, un-retiree, and YouTube and Facebook live-streaming genealogist, who is perhaps better known by her award-winning blogging nom-de-plume - it's the wonderful DearMYRTLE!THE LIFE STORY - MYRTLE ELIZA WEISERMyrt has chosen to tell the life story of her much beloved, and namesake, grandmother who was born Myrtle Eliza Weiser in May 1895, in Salt Lake City in Utah, USA.Grandmother Myrtle heads to a strict nursing school. She then gets a job for US $1 a week as a postpartum nurse - involving caring for infants and doing laundry. After marrying in 1917, Myrtle gives birth to her first child amidst the Great Influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 (often called 'Spanish Flu'). DearMyrtle reflects on the experiences that her grandmother must have had as young mother and trained nurse during that flu epidemic, and relates it to her own experience during the Covid-19 pandemic that swept the world in 2020.Moving to Seattle, her kindly ways emerge again - serving as a nurse during World War Two, giving inoculations to servicemen on the waterfront and would bring an occasional young recruit home to have dinner with the family. She also campaigned for children to have shoes.Myrt's fond memories of her beloved grandmother beam from this episode, and has clearly shaped her own life.THE BRICK WALL - HANNAH HUDSONIt's a brick wall in Bisham, Berkshire, UK that has Myrt asking for help. Hannah Hudson and her husband Benjamin Sanders take their daughter Zillah for baptism in 1788, but prior to that, remains a mystery.Myrt has searched for Hannah's origins - checking the parish registers for marriages and baptisms, but she can't find Hannah Hudson's parents, nor her marriage to Benjamin Sanders.A record on FamilySearch gives a baptism of a Hannah Hudson of John and Anne Hudson elsewhere in Berkshire, but there's not enough evidence yet to connect her Hudsons to them.Who are Hannah Hudson's parents?When/where was she born?If you think that you can help Myrt with a research idea or clue, then you can message her via her Substack page. Alternatively, you can send us a message and we'll pass it on to her.In the meantime, Myrt is enthusiastic about Andrew's offer of help, but maybe she knows more than he does... - - -Episode CreditsAndrew Martin - Host and ProducerDearMYRTLE - GuestJohn Spike - Sándor PetofiPharos TutorsAdvance your research with a family history course from Pharos Tutors.Support the showThank you for listening! Grab your genealogy charts and your emotional-support bonnets, because this week we're diving into “Family Tree,” the episode where poor little Albert discovers that figuring out where you come from can be… complicated. When Miss Wilder assigns a genealogy project, Albert realizes his family tree looks a lot like the one from A Charlie Brown Christmas. Naturally, the children of Walnut Grove handle this delicate situation with the grace of a herd of stampeding cattle. Nothing says “friendship” quite like being called a “bastard” on a fishing trip, Laura being completely oblivious to Albert's emotional turmoil, and Nellie Oleson taunting him just for some good old-fashioned psychopath fun. (She's giving Matthew McConaughey in Dazed and Confused. In other words: LOSER.)Albert begs Pa to officially adopt him in an absolutely devastating, tear-jerking scene. (Where are the Emmys for Michael Landon and Matthew Labyorteaux?! Truly.) Pa, suddenly realizing that—oops—he probably should have adopted Albert already, decides to make it official. Big mistake! Albert's biological father is, gasp, ALIVE… and wants Albert back. Not out of love, not out of guilt—no, no. To work on his farm. What a heartwarming reunion! But Albert, being the clever, street-savvy kid he is, hatches a plan: he pretends to be blind, which quickly convinces his bio-dad that this whole fatherhood thing is not for him. Reversing course, he leaves Albert in Walnut Grove where he belongs—back with the Ingalls, where he is (finally!) and officially adopted. (Honestly, having a blind sister really does come in handy here.)“Family Tree” stands out as one of the most emotional episodes of Season 6, highlighting Albert's vulnerability, Charles' unwavering compassion, and the show's ongoing theme that families are made, not just born. But don't worry—your hosts keep the snark, nostalgia, and inappropriate giggling flowing throughout. Then, join us on Patreon, where Alison shares stories about her father, Thor Arngrim, and the surprising similarities between his childhood and this episode. Joanna began her career in action fare such as Steve McQueen's thriller Bullitt, the Jason Robards drama Fools, The Laughing Policeman starring Walter Matthau and The Outfit with Robert Duvall. Her first co-starring role came opposite George C. Scott in the offbeat comedy caper The Bank Shot. Television became an important medium for her in the late 1970s, with guest parts on all the popular shows of the time, including Dallas. Trapper John, M.D., Taxi, Starsky and Hutch, Charlie's Angels, Lou Grant and a recurring role on Falcon Crest. Joanna languished in three failed series attempts--The Roller Girls, 240-Robert and The Family Tree--before hitting the jackpot with the sitcom Buffalo Bill opposite Dabney Coleman. The 1980s also brought about positive, critical reception for Joanna on film as well, especially in a number of showy portrayals, notably her snake-dancing replicant in the futuristic sci-fi thriller Blade Runner, her radio journalist involved with Nick Nolte and Ed Harris in the political drama Under Fire and her co-starring role in a wacky triangle with Bob Hoskins and a hyperkinetic hare in the highly ambitious part toon/part fantasy film Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Back on the TV front she was seen in recurring roles on L.A. Law, Diagnosis Murder, The District and Boston Legal. Since then Joanna has juggled a number of quality film and TV assignments, including her Emmy-nominated recurring role as a quirky, capricious mother/psychiatrist in Six Feet Under. Joanna currently stars in the movie Killing Faith opposite Guy Pierce and Bill Pullman. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

It was 60 years ago this month that Bob Dylan brought his full-band electrical circus to the masses. The outspoken, topical folk singer from Hibbing, Minnesota became the toast of the folk world through his incredible songwriting, razor wit, pointed barbs and completely original style evident in songs like “Blowin' in the Wind,” “Don't Think Twice” and “It Ain't Me, Babe.” But in 1965, he flipped over that table to join his rock and roll contemporaries by going all in on folk-rock. And when he did it, he hired a motley group of mostly Canadian youngsters called the Hawks to bring this to his audience, which almost always met with their scorn and derision, but Bob was dead set on moving on to his next phase and bringing his audience with him. In his latest article for the Strange Brew, which is Part 1 of 2, music historian Scott G. Shea tells the story of the Hawks, who would later change their name to the Band, how they came together as a unit and hooked up with Dylan.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

One of the most tempting shortcuts in genealogy is the idea of the “master family tree.” A single, giant, authoritative tree where everyone is already linked, all the names and dates are correct, and all you have to do is plug your family into the right spot. You'll hear this myth from new researchers, see it implied in online ads, and sometimes even find it in casual conversations: “Isn't there one big tree somewhere that already has all of this figured out?” It's a nice idea. Imagine logging in, clicking a few buttons, and instantly tracing your family back ten generations. But here's the truth: a flawless, universal master tree does not exist, and probably never will. That doesn't mean there aren't shared trees online. It just means they are often riddled with errors, duplications, and contradictions. Today, we'll dig into where the myth came from, how shared trees can be both helpful and dangerous, and what you should do instead to build a reliable family history. In this series of The Leader's Notebook, I begin a journey I'm calling Also Featured in the Cast. When we read the stories of great Bible heroes like Abraham, we often focus only on the star of the story. Yet around Abraham are others—Terah, Nahor, Haran, Lot, and Sarai—figures who also shape the journey. Some hinder, some fall away, some compromise, and some stand faithfully beside him. Through their lives we discover lessons about the people around us: those we may have to release, those who start the journey but cannot finish, those who drift toward compromise, and those who walk with us through thick and thin. My prayer is that these stories will help you see your own journey more clearly and encourage you to keep your eyes on the call of God, no matter who else is in the cast.— Dr. Mark Rutland Chapters (00:00:03) - The Leaders Notebook(00:00:25) - Genesis 11, Verse 5(00:02:34) - The minor players in the Bible(00:05:12) - The Family Tree of Abram(00:13:24) - There Are People Who Will Destroy Your Life(00:20:17) - The story of Lot and his decision to go to Canaan(00:25:42) - Don't Look Back(00:31:14) - Abram and Sarai
