Author Constance Squires returns to Rock is Lit to discuss her debut novel, ‘Along the Watchtower', a powerful coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of military life, Cold War Germany, and rock ‘n roll.  ‘Along the Watchtower' follows thirteen-year-old Lucinda Collins as she arrives at a U.S. military base in Grafenwoehr, West Germany, in 1983. She knows the drill—setting up new quarters, navigating her parents' tensions, and keeping fellow Army brats at arm's length, knowing friendships won't last. She longs for a true home, but her father is haunted by Vietnam, and her mother is growing weary of Army life. As her family fractures, Lucinda finds solace in rock ‘n roll and begins to forge her own path to adulthood. “In science, they're not tied to an outcome. They're open to the possibilities of what is going to result from an experiment. How freeing is that – not to be tied to a specific outcome. I've really tried to adopt that in my own personal life, the idea of just growing, learning, and being open. So many things are out of my control, so I might as well just be ready to go for the ride. I guess what I would tell young people is just equip yourself, make the best informed decision you can, then be at peace with it.”Dr. Julie Yu, an award-winning choral conductor and music educator, leads the Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University as Director of Choral Activities and Canterbury Voices as Artistic Director. In these roles, she conducts and guides the acclaimed 150-voice Canterbury Voices ensemble and shapes the artistic vision of OCU's four major choirs, including the Chamber Choir and Ad Astra women's chorus. Neurocognitive Disparities in Aging: Exploring Ethnicity & Mental Health

Aging-US

BUFFALO, NY—February 5, 2025 — A new #research paper was #published in Aging (Aging-US) on November 27, 2024, in Volume 17, Issue 1, titled “Neurocognitive disparities: investigating ethnicity and mental health in rural aging adults.” Researchers Carol Fadalla, Jonathan Singer,, Peter Rerick, Lauren Elliott, Elisabeth McLean, Sydnie Schneider, Lauren Chrzanowski, Veronica Molinar-Lopez, and Volker Neugebauer from Texas Tech University and the University of Central Oklahoma studied how depression and anxiety affect memory and thinking skills in Hispanic and non-Hispanic White older adults living in rural areas. They found clear differences in brain health, with Hispanic older adults scoring lower on tests of memory, attention, and problem-solving, even when their mental health was similar to non-Hispanic White participants. This suggests that Hispanic older adults may face unique challenges that affect their brain health, highlighting the need for support programs tailored to their specific needs. As the U.S. population grows older, more people are being diagnosed with conditions like Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and other memory-related illnesses. This issue is even more serious in rural communities where healthcare services are limited. Hispanic older adults, who make up a large part of the rural population, are at an even higher risk of developing these brain health issues. In this study, researchers analyzed data from over 1,400 adults aged 40 and older from rural communities in Texas. Participants completed tests measuring memory, problem-solving, and attention, along with surveys about depression and anxiety. While depression and anxiety were linked to poorer thinking skills, they did not fully explain the brain health differences between Hispanic and non-Hispanic White participants. In fact, ethnic background alone explained about 20% of the differences in brain health, showing its strong impact on cognitive performance. The study also found that other factors, such as lifelong stress, limited access to healthcare, language barriers, discrimination, social isolation, and fewer educational opportunities, may contribute to these brain health differences. These challenges seem to affect Hispanic older adults more, increasing their risk of memory and thinking problems as they age. The researchers emphasize the need to look beyond mental health to fully understand brain health differences in older adults. They recommend that healthcare providers consider social, economic, and cultural factors when developing programs to support cognitive health. Adding memory and thinking tests to regular checkups could help detect early signs of cognitive decline. “Culturally tailored interventions targeting risk factors for neurocognitive impairment in Hispanic rural aging adults are imperative to mitigate neurocognitive disparities.” By understanding the unique challenges faced by Hispanic older adults, programs that better support brain health can be created. Involving local community leaders in designing these programs can make them more effective, helping all older adults maintain their memory and thinking skills as they age. A routine welfare check in Oklahoma took a dark and unexpected turn when a man sitting on the side of the highway confessed to a chilling crime that had remained unsolved for over seven years. Joseph Tyler Beck, 28, shocked law enforcement officials last week when, without provocation, he admitted to choking 19-year-old Jennifer Kyli Molloy to death inside her apartment near the University of Central Oklahoma on October 5, 2016. According to police reports, Beck's confession came during a conversation with a state trooper who was responding to a report of a man on the highway. Dressed in a Super Mario T-shirt, Beck voluntarily divulged details of his involvement in the 2016 Edmond death. "The things he was saying added up to our investigation," stated Emily Ward, a spokesperson for the Edmond Police Department, during an interview with News9. Beck allegedly confessed that he had known Molloy and had been attracted to her. His intention that fateful night was reportedly to rape her, but when she asked him to leave, he became enraged and proceeded to choke her until she died. For Molloy's family, the revelation brought shock and devastation. They expressed disbelief that Beck, whom they had known for decades and who had recently attempted to make plans with them, could commit such a heinous act. "Growing up with Joseph, he was the nicest guy, he was the sweetest guy," remarked Christina Stanfiel, Molloy's sister, in an interview. "You would never think anything ill-mannered from him, and to know this happened and that he did this over something so stupid." Despite their grief, Molloy's family expressed relief that Beck had been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. However, they lamented the years of uncertainty and the toll it had taken on them. "It's been a long seven-and-a-half years," said Johnny Molloy, the victim's father. "I've been waiting on this for a long, long time, and I never really thought it would happen." Johnny Molloy described his initial feelings upon learning of Beck's arrest as shock and anger. He emphasized his desire for justice to be served swiftly and decisively. "The good Lord works in mysterious ways, and he's haunted that man every day, and I hope he continues to," Molloy declared. "This man has taken so much from my family, and I'm glad he's in jail." Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In this episode I'm joined by Constance Squires, author of the 2017 rock novel ‘Live From Medicine Park'. The story follows Ray Wheeler, who arrives in Medicine Park, Oklahoma, with the goal of filming a documentary about the comeback of Lena Wells, a singer whose career got derailed by a bad late-night TV appearance in the 1980s. Ray, known for his philosophy of non-involvement with his subjects, finds himself drawn into Lena's world as he begins to probe into her past. As Ray delves deeper into Lena's story, he uncovers secrets surrounding her band mate Cyril and Lena's son, Gram. Meanwhile, Gram's wife, Jettie, a talented musician herself, struggles to pursue her passion for music in the face of familial disapproval. The novel delves into themes of ambition, identity, and the search for authenticity. In addition to ‘Live From Medicine Park', Constance Squires is the author of the forthcoming novel ‘Low April Sun' from University of Oklahoma Press. She's also the author of the 2012 Oklahoma Book Award-winning novel ‘Along the Watchtower' and the short story collection ‘Hit Your Brights'. Her short fiction has received multiple Pushcart-Prize nominations and other awards and appeared in many prestigious journals, such as the ‘Atlantic', ‘Guernica', ‘The Dublin Quarterly', ‘Shenandoah', and ‘The Rolling Stone 500'. She wrote the screenplay for the short film ‘Grave Misgivings' has published nonfiction in the ‘Village Voice', the ‘New York Times', ‘Salon', ‘World Literature Today', and been featured on NPR's ‘Snap Judgment'. She holds a Ph.D. in English and is currently a professor of Creative Writing at the University of Central Oklahoma. ‘Live From Medicine Park' was a 2018 Oklahoma Book Award finalist. Rock is Lit alumnus Jeff Jackson included the novel in his ‘Electric Lit' article, “7 Candidates for the Great American Rock and Roll Novel.” I'm thrilled to have the chance to talk to her about this must-read for music fans. About Ethan Hartzell Back in 2012 I was at a cross-road in my career as a seasoned retail manager who was looking for a new chapter in my professional career when I sat down with a new found friend in the mortgage industry whom suggested that I look into the Property and Casualty Industry. Without hesitation or a job offer on the table, I enrolled in my P&C Pre-Licensing course with the pursuit to become a licensed agent. Shortly after passing my exam and being appointed by a local captive agency, I went into a 3 week long corporate training program where I embarked on my new journey as an insurance sales professional. While in my last week of training we went live on the phones to begin prospecting and quoting individuals for their insurance needs. Within just a few short days I had sold three prospective households and got my first taste of success, I was hooked! Low and behold I was told that I was the very first agent to ever sell a policy while in the corporate training program, they said it had never been done before at my local level. Even one of my sales trainers told me, "you're going to be an agency owner one day."
