In this episode Truth talks with Nate Homan,  author of “Diamonds and Blood : An Infamous West African Warlord's Bay State Jailbreak.”  Nate is a south Shore-born punk rock amateur boxer who graduated from Emerson College and has written for the Boston Phoenix, Metro Boston/NYC/ Philly, Front Page Detectives, DigBoston, and the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism. The two discuss the plight of Charles Taylor – and his rise from college campus radical to mass-murdering megalomaniac.   This began the night he slipped out of the Plymouth House of Correction in Plymouth, MA and made his way across the Atlantic Ocean to his homeland of Liberia, and he led a brutal coup d'etat in 1989. In 1991, Charles Taylor bankrolled a ruthless rebel army in Sierra Leone known for the abundance of child soldiers who hacked the arms off of enemies and innocent civilians alike. By conquering the mountains along the Liberian border, Charles Taylor hijacked the international diamond trade for nearly 15 years. After a bogus election in 1997, Charles Taylor became the 21st Commander in Chief of theRepublic of Liberia.  Perched on a throne of blood, Charles Taylor stacked fortunes in Swiss bank accounts. He broke bread with world leaders, Fortune 500 executives, mercenaries, mass murderers, gem trading jihadis, and big time American televangelists. At the end of his reign, Charles Taylor was convicted of international war crimes in 2012.   For more info: IG: @natehomanboston WEB: https://binj.news/2024/01/07/an-infamous-west-african-warlords-bay-state-jailbreak-2/   As always, please hit the subscribe button if you like and support what we do! Transcripts available at https://tobydorr.com/podcast-schedule/ “The women of Framingham (Prison) sought a way out and their struggles gave them dignity. I could hear their voices speaking out of the darkness.”  - Jean Trounstine, author, activist, professor emerita at Middlesex Community College in Lowell, Massachusetts, and today's guest on Fierce Conversations with Toby Some of our fierce topics today: [02:57] I began working with people in prison and, it changed me, it turned me into a prison activist, and it turned me into a writer. [04:50] If my students tackled Shakespeare, a writer they thought beyond reach, they would also be learning to take on what was most difficult in life. [30:33] My new book is called Mother Love and it's a book of short stories about ten different women whose child killed someone. [38:35] Poetry comes to you when you need to say something that comes so deep from the heart that you can't say it unless you do it in a poem.  More about Jean Trounstine and her work: Jean Trounstine I prefer to talk about how I became an activist, working in a prison, writing books to change things.  I have written 6 and write currently as well for the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism. Shakespeare Behind Bars I believed that if my students tackled Shakespeare, a writer they thought beyond reach, they would also be learning to take on what was most difficult in life. The women yearned for change and growth. Eventually the program took on a philosophy: art has the power to redeem lives. I came to realize that most women in prison are not dangerous. What characterizes them more than anything else is their heartache. Instead of frightening me they seemed lost, with tragic lives. I knew nothing of the fellowship that exists in prison. Women inmates seek relationships, thrive on it. It is this prison community that sustains women who do time. It is this community that taught me to value the prisoner's lives, to like and respect them, and to understand that they are more than news stories tucked away on a back page in our local papers. While it is true that prison is a repressive environment, the one who offers hope in the classroom has the potential to effect change. The women of Framingham sought a way out, and their struggles gave them dignity. I could hear their voices… speaking out of the darkness. Boy With a Knife The United States was a county that set controversial boundaries where childhood ended and adulthood began in terms of criminal responsibility. Until 2005, the US was the only nation that still sanctioned the death penalty for youth. These boys and girls, barely having earned their driver's license, too young to vote, too young to legally buy alcohol or cigarettes, are locked away with adult men and women. This in spite of the fact that 90 percent of juveniles, even those convicted of murder, grow out of criminal behavior as they age. Putting young people in state prisons essentially silences them. Sending juveniles to adult prisons doesn't make us safer. The international standard for incarceration of juveniles for the most serious crimes is ten or fifteen years prior to parole eligibility. Jason is a co-founder of BINJ, which partners with community publications on investigative stories and civic engagement initiatives, and offers training programs to promising young journalists.  Now Jason is making a bold bet on the future of news by training a new generation of journalists. He's launching HorizonMass, a statewide digital news publication with a focus on public interest journalism. At HorizonMass, college interns work as reporters, designers, marketers, and editors. They work alongside more experienced professional freelance writers.  Later on, in Quick Takes, Dan looks at some data about news referrals from social media giants, specifically Facebook and X, or Twitter, or whatever it is this week. Large news organizations had become reliant on both of those platforms while the sort of local news outlets that we track here at What Works were more dependent on Facebook alone. In any case, those days are drawing to a close, and it's long past time for community journalists to be asking themselves: What's next?

Boston is pretty famous for producing some epic rock bands, but in 1970, a loud, rambunctious and flamboyant lead singer named Steven Tyler set out with his friends Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford to make hard rock infused with blues, pop, and R&B. Today, let’s take a deep dive into Aerosmith: Steven Tyler's real name is Steven Tallarico. His first stage name was Steven Tally, adopted during his first band’s incarnation, Chain Reaction. After Chain Reaction split up, he formed Aerosmith and became Steven Tyler. His first choice of stage name was Tyler Britt, but their manager talked him out of it Not only is Steven Tyler a talented singer, he is also a great drummer, having played drums for Aerosmith first before leaving and returning as the lead singer Tyler and Joe Perry are well known for their drug use in the 70s, having “…snorted all of Peru,” according to a quote from Tyler. The Toxic Twins, as they were known, used to destroy hotel rooms using chainsaws, throw televisions plugged in with extension cords into swimming pools to watch them explode, and buy cases of vintage wine that would be gone in a weekend. Joe Perry says their onstage performances often suffered because of their drug use, which lead to getting clean In fact, things got so bad with their drug use that the entire band decided to enter rehab in 1986. When they got out, they began releasing hit records, including the diamond-selling Greatest Hits album Tyler's daughter, Liv, is a popular actress having appeared in such 90s blockbusters as Armageddon. She was born in 1977 to Bebe Buell, a legendary groupie who also had affairs with Jimmy Page, Mick Jagger, Elvis Costello, and Todd Rundgren. Liv’s mother apparently told her that Rundgren was actually her father. She ended up finding out the truth at age 11 Tyler says he took that job as a judge on American Idol for two years because he was mad at his fellow bandmates for not watching out for him. He considered his time judging on the show as a chance to get back at the band for not helping to keep him sober The next time you’re in Boston, there are a few places to visit to get your fill of Aerosmith’s love of the city, including their memorabilia on display at the Hard Rock Café, and they apparently pay for free admission for all of the general public at the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art on Thursdays

The last time Chris Faraone spoke to It's All Journalism, he was in the midst of some independent investigative work out in Oregon. Now, he's leading a nonprofit journalism endeavor in Boston. The Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism, or BINJ (which Faraone has tattooed across his knuckles), is inspired by alternative and independent publications in California, including the San Francisco Public Press, in which people are working collaboratively to bring about not only investigative journalism but to serve the public in ways traditional media no longer can.
