POPULARITY
Sunday August 30, 2020This episode explores the tafsir of the third verse of Sura Yusuf and discuss the nature of it as "the most beautiful story". It looks at the monomyth in storytelling, also called "the hero's journey", and how it applies to the story of Yusuf (upon him be peace) as well as our own lives. The Chiasm of the Story of Yusuf (upon him be peace):1. Yusuf's dream --- 12. Dream fulfilled2. Brother's plot --- 11. Yusuf's plot3. Attempted seduction --- 10. Confession of Seduction4. His effect on her friends --- 9. Confession of friends5. Prison --- 8. Yusuf's release6. The King's dream --- 7. Interpretation of the dreamThe monomyth was popularized by the professor of literature Joseph Campbell. His work focused on comparative mythology and comparative religion. In 1949 he published a book entitled "The Hero With A Thousand Faces". In it he describes the 'monomyth', which is common template found in folklore and stories across multiple cultures. The grand narrative in the monomyth consists of stages, and these patterns tend to be repeated in stories and myths across cultures.Generally, each monomyth can be divided into three acts: a) Departure (also separation)—this is the hero in the ordinary world who receives the call to go on an adventure. He is reluctant but is helped by a mentor. b) Initiation—this is the journey into an unknown or special world where he faces trials, either alone or with help. The hero eventually reaches ‘the innermost cave,’ or central crisis of the adventure, where he must undergo ‘the ordeal’/obstacle/enemy and then gaining his reward. c) Return—here he returns to the ordinary world with the treasure he gained which can now be used for the benefit of other. He is transformed by the adventure.
Sunday August 23, 2020Tafsir of the first two verses of Surah Yusuf exploring the meanings of the word "book" used to describe the glorious Quran, what makes it "clear", and why the Quran was revealed in the Arabic language when the Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace) is a universal Prophet sent to all of humanity, and the majority of his Umma are not native Arabic speakers.
Sunday August 16, 2020After covering the meanings of the Basmala, this session begins the journey into Sura Yusuf, covering the first verse "Alif. Lam. Ra". What are the disjoined letters that appear in several chapters of the Quran? What do they have in common with one another? Do they have a discernible meaning and if so, what do they mean? What is the wisdom behind the disjointed letters appearing at the beginning of this chapter?
Sunday August 9, 2020Detailed meanings of Basmala (Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim). An analysis of each word when considered separately and together. Why does Basmala prefaces every chapter of Quran save one. 1. The letter "baa" means: - Seeking help - 'With' - for blessing - Proximity - Extraneous - Oath2. Implicitness/Forwarding-delay - Verb + Basmala - Noun + Basmala - Basmala + Verb - Basmala + Noun3. Lafz al-Jalalah (the divine word): "Allah" - Mus-taqq (derived) - Ja'amid (not derived)4. al-Rahman: Comes from 'Raham' (mercy) and pertains to the divine mercy that coves every creation (their existence in and of itself is the mercy from their Creator)5. al-Raheem: Also comes from 'Raham' (mercy) and pertains to the divine mercy that is specific to believers.

Sunday August 30, 2020 A message by Adult Discipleship Pastor, Seth Battista, in the series "James, Faith & Works." We are a double minded people whose war against God is met by a flood of grace. God draws us to repentance and salvation through the consistent application of his favor.
Sermon recorded Sunday - August 30, 2020. Pastor Bob Flayhart preaching at Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama.
On this week’s mini episode, Haley catches up with Canadian professional triathlete Jen Annett. Sunday August 30th was meant to mark the return of Ironman Canada to its original home in Penticton, BC. But like many others, this race was postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a Penticton local, Jen felt the collective heartbreak of missing out on this legendary race weekend, so she decided to make it happen herself. Jen tells us where the idea was born to create a “DIY Ironman” on the iconic course, what went into making it happen on the day, and how the community of Penticton came together to show their support.

Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O LORD, God of hosts. I did not sit in the company of revelers, nor did I rejoice; I sat alone, because your hand was upon me, for you had filled me with indignation. Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Will you be to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail? Therefore thus says the LORD: “If you return, I will restore you, and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall be as my mouth. They shall turn to you, but you shall not turn to them. And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, declares the LORD. I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.”Epistle -- Romans 12:9–21Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be conceited. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the sixteenth chapterFrom that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Sunday August 23, 2020 - We're continuing in our series on the Book of Malachi. Today we are in Chapter 3 and the message is titled "Should People Cheat God"? This is getting into the "meat" of God's Word and the question that Malachi brings to his people and to us is a very deep question with many facets. We may be asking, like the people did of Malachi: How do we cheat God? That's a great question. Are you ready to hear how God answers? So often people get offended when God answers questions, if only we would understand that God is for us all the time, even when we need to hear a stern answer. It's my prayer that we hear the Word of the Lord and we heed it and then trust God for His help in living it. Join us in this journey. Be blessed...

Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who bore you; for he was but one when I called him, that I might bless him and multiply him. For the LORD comforts Zion; he comforts all her waste places and makes her wilderness like Eden, her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the voice of song. “Give attention to me, my people, and give ear to me, my nation; for a law will go out from me, and I will set my justice for a light to the peoples. My righteousness draws near, my salvation has gone out, and my arms will judge the peoples; the coastlands hope for me, and for my arm they wait. Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and they who dwell in it will die in like manner; but my salvation will be forever, and my righteousness will never be dismayed.”Epistle -- Romans 11:33—12:8Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?”For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the sixteenth chapter. Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
