The Military Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, the OSJ, is a historic religious order of the Catholic Church. As with all religious orders, the OSJ derives its jurisdiction directly from the pope and is not subject to the diocesan bishops. When the Vatican II revolution forced traditional priests to leave their dioceses, priests, desiring to serve the needs of the faithful who recognized the poison of the new religion, were still faced with the difficulty that they were not granted ordinary jurisdiction, for instance, to hear confessions. With the confusion of that time and unable or neglectful to study and explain how they received the required jurisdiction, priests of that time period grasped from anyway which sounded legitimate in order to acquire jurisdiction. One of these means was the organization called the OSJ founded here in America which held forth its hand as a means for these priests to have jurisdiction. Now while the OSJ has its headquarters in Rome and was still recognized as a legitimate Catholic Order, the American OSJ claims to be a separate branch of the order deriving its origin from the branch in Russia and independent of the Order in Rome. While being its claim to be a Catholic Order, if true, would give it ordinary jurisdiction separate from the diocesan structure, the OSJ in America also makes the extraordinary claim that it is only accountable to the Pope in faith and morals. This is but one of many extraordinary claims of this order. Father Anthony Cekada joins us again to discuss the research he did in the late 1970’s on the OSJ in Rome and the entity claiming to be the OSJ found here in the United States. As there are many pertinent concepts which pertain to other topics discussed in this episode, listeners will find the topic is still relevant today. Join us as we descend into the shadows to find out what lies behind the mask of the OSJ here in America.
