Greg breaks the news that the Alabama Senate will no longer consider gambling in the 2025 legislative session.
Trump plans to sign an executive order aimed at dismantling the Education Department; Advocates push Alabama Senate to fully end grocery tax; More Wyomingites get degrees, but anti-DEI law could slow progress; Competition prepares students for environmental science careers.
1819 News has no problem calling out both bad actors and bad things in state government. That being said, we think it is just as important to highlight good people doing good things. This week 1819 News CEO Bryan Dawson sits down with State Senator Chris Elliott who has consistently been a strong voice for good in the Alabama Senate. That includes being a “no” vote, despite tremendous pressure, on the terrible gambling legislation last session. In this podcast you will hear about how Sen Elliott got into politics as well as some of the things he's working on this session. From reeling in occupational licensing and out of control state agency boards to speaking up for veterans and sensible infrastructure spending, Elliott is consistently doing what's right no matter the push back. Dawson and Elliott also discuss prison conditions as well as the mismanagement of building new prisons and how that can be fixed moving forward. Overtime Segment: How do we bring Trump's energy into state government? Greg shares about a joint Legislative Prayer Breakfast he was privileged to attend on Thursday morning sponsored by the Alabama House of Representatives and Alabama Senate. Next, he gives details on how Senator April Weaver was able to pass two important bills through the Alabama Senate on Thursday. Will perceived budget shortfalls be used as reasoning to pass gambling in Alabama in 2025? Greg gives his thoughts and shares a Harvard Study that says "Gambling problems are mushrooming". Lastly, the shocking enlightenment and exposure of Federal Government spending through USAID.
Greg begins by highlighting the March for Life in Washington DC and share some audio from Vice President JD Vance's speech to the tens of thousands gathered. He also highlights the failure of the Alabama Senate to pass a bill that would encourage people in our state to Support Pregnancy Resource Centers in Alabama. This he explains is a pro life policy that other states have seen succeed. Sheriff Moon joins Greg discussing recent sex sting operations in Blount County targeting those who prey on minors. Some of these have been done in conjunction with Chris Hansen and have resulted in the arrest of people in the country illegally. Washington Times online opinion editor and host of Bold and Blount Podcast joins Greg to talk current events and how Christians can Defeat Marxism and Saves America with Biblical Truth as given in her latest book God Given or Bust.

Leigh Corfman went public with sexual abuse allegations against Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore in 2017. She was 14 when she says Moore, 32 and an asst. DA, groomed and abused her. Nine other women also came forward with stories of their own. It's been a difficult road for Leigh, but she says she would do it all over again. In a case that wrapped up earlier this year, Leigh sued Roy Moore for defamation, saying he painted her as a liar while denying her accusations of child sexual abuse. Moore countersued, claiming that Leigh's allegations were false and designed to damage him politically. If you're a political junkie like me, this conversation will knock your socks off! Joe Trippi and Mike Madrid, one long time Democratic strategist, one long time Republican strategist discuss how DEMOCRACY IS ON THE BALLOT (and how 67% of BOTH Republicans and Democrats believe this). We also get into how candidates who have huge scandals (clears throat... did someone say "Herschel Walker"?) are able to stay in their races (and sometimes even get a bump!); what a "Bannon line" voter is and how to win them; where the real tossup races are in the House and Senate; what happened to the party that used to stand up to Russia that's now an extension of Putin's propoganda operation; what the most important hidden metric is that no one is paying attention to (Hint: It's neither the generic ballot nor presidential approval); what the best political strategists in the country are doing at this stage of the campaign; and much, much more! Many know Joe Trippi from his excellent podcast, That Trippi Show. Joe's been running political campaigns at every level in U.S. politics and even internationally, starting in city politics in Northern California and then jumping into the big leagues on Ted Kennedy's campaign for the Democratic nomination for President in 1980. Joe's also been involved in some groundbreaking “bottom up” strategies along the way like when he ran Governor Howard Dean's grassroots presidential campaign in 2004. More recently, he helped Doug Jones, a Democrat, win the Alabama Senate seat, the first Democrat to get elected to the Senate in Alabama in decades. Joe has also joined Lincoln Project to "build a pro-democracy coalition." Mike Madrid is a national political strategist, an expert in demographics and Latino politics. Mike's academic work on Latino politics became the foundation for groundbreaking communications and outreach strategies in California, Texas, Florida and nationwide. Later, Mike was a co-founder of the Lincoln Project which played a significant part in defeating Donald Trump. Mike also lectures on race, class and partisanship at USC and he's a regular contributor on one of our favorite programs Politicology with Ron Steslow. He is the co-host of the excellent and timely podcast The Latino Vote along with Chuck Rocha. Mike also hosts the program Mike Drop on the CallIn app which is then released as a podcast. And most notably, Mike Madrid is the first guest ever to score a hat trick on the TP&R pod! https://twitter.com/JoeTrippi https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/that-trippi-show/id1523896927 https://twitter.com/madrid_mike https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-latino-vote/id1613279254 https://www.callin.com/show/mike-drop-WBRuydpbns https://twitter.com/coreysnathan

June is a jumbo primary month, so we've once again brought Daily Kos Elections editor Jeff Singer on this week's edition of The Downballot to preview all of the major races. There's the perennial loser (but one-time winner!) Danny Tarkanian's quest to oust a sitting GOP congressman in rural Nevada; Republican Rep. Mo Brooks' attempt to come back from the dead in the Alabama Senate runoff; two very different member-vs.-member House primaries in Illinois; and a whole heck of a lot more. Of course, there were also primaries this week, so naturally co-hosts David Nir and David Beard recapped the biggies: two Republican congressmen in Mississippi who were forced into runoffs, a high-profile former Trump cabinet official who might lose a comeback bid, and a crushing defeat for a South Dakota ballot measure designed to make it harder for progressives to pass other ballot measures. Episode transcript.

A devil has the Republican Party's soul, but not all of his endorsed candidates are faring too well. In Georgia, former Sen. David Perdue is losing badly to Gov. Brian Kemp despite Trump's endorsement, and Rep. Mo Brooks was polling so badly in the Alabama Senate race that Trump un-endorsed him. But if you think the voters in our group are souring on Trumpism, think again. Tepublicans in the Ohio Senate primary are vying for Trump's endorsement to gain an edge in a crowded field. But Trump's approval doesn't mean an automatic victory: the former president just rescinded an endorsement in the Alabama Senate race, and his candidate was lagging in the polls.
