Welcome to the Black Rock Podcast, where faith meets real life. We're glad you're joining us today. Over the last few episodes, we've been walking through Black Rock Church's Ministry Values—the convictions that shape who we are, how we follow Jesus, and the culture we're striving to create as a church. We've talked about Joyful Discipleship and being Outward Focused, and today we're looking at another foundational value: "God's Word is the Final Word." What does it really mean to say that Scripture is our final authority? How do we trust God's Word when it challenges our opinions, emotions, or the culture around us? And how do we hold firmly to biblical truth without becoming arrogant, legalistic, or unloving? As always, our goal isn't just to have an interesting conversation. It's to help us all grow in our understanding of God, His Word, and how the Bible continues to shape everyday life. So let's jump in.
Welcome to the Black Rock Podcast, where faith meets real life. Today we're talking about one of our core ministry values: being outward focused. At Black Rock, we believe church is for everyone. That's why we strive to communicate the truth of God's Word in a way that's relatable, understandable, and engaging—especially for people who may be new to faith. As Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians, everything we do should build people up. We want church to be spiritual, rooted in Scripture and empowered by the Holy Spirit; helpful, making a difference in everyday life; and enjoyable, creating an environment where people genuinely want to be. So grab a snack and join us as we explore what it means to be outward focused. Let's chat and chew!

What if the Church wasn't afraid? Imagine a church that still believes in miracles. That still tells the truth. That still reaches out — even when it's costly. In this message, Pastor Jason unpacks what it really means to be an outward church — one that doesn't just invite people in, but boldly goes out into the world with conviction and compassion. We'll walk through John 9 — the story of a man who went from blindness to boldness — and discover what it means to live as the “sent” people of God. Because being outward doesn't mean being flashy — it means being faithful. It's not about attraction — it's about action. It's not about being relevant — it's about being resilient. Let's recover our burden for the lost, reclaim our courage, and become the kind of church the world desperately needs — one that shines light in the darkness. In this week's message from our Deep & Wide series, we're reminded that spiritual depth should always lead to outward movement. In Outward Focused, we explore Jesus' call to make disciples and be His witnesses—beginning where we are and expanding to the ends of the earth.A mature faith doesn't just grow deeper in knowledge or intimacy with God—it grows wider in compassion, service, and boldness to reach the lost. This message challenges us to lift our eyes beyond the walls of the church and live with a mission-minded focus every day.
Pastor Peter shared principles from Matthew 5 about being salt and light in the world around us.
A majority of our prayers need to be focused on other people and God's purpose instead of on ourselves.
A Healthy Church is Outward Focused
In today's conversation on Digging Deeper, Jeff and Laura talk with J.D. Greear, pastor of The Summit Church, about the mission of the church and church planting. They discuss the need for churches to equip members for mission rather than catering to consumerism. J.D. discusses the importance of recognizing the call to mission. It's not about if you're called, but where and how God leads you to be on mission for Him. Together, the three discuss the challenges of sustaining passion for their mission in the face of personal struggles and sufferings. They emphasize the significance of the Christian community in providing support and guidance during these times. We hope this episode encourages you to seek opportunities for evangelism in everyday life, being confident that even in times of personal struggle, God can use you to impact others.

This session is from the Spiritual Leadership Conference in Lancaster California. "The inevitable drift of most church is to become insider-focused over time. Leading a church to remain outwardly focused requires intention and evaluation coupled with a strong strategy for reaching the lost."
