In this episode of The Church Planting Podcast, Greg Nettle sits down with Michael Frost, internationally recognized missiologist, author, and leading voice in the missional church movement. Michael is the author of influential books including The Shape of Things to Come. Together, Greg and Michael explore what it means to lead, plant, and evangelize in a post-Christian world—a cultural reality where people no longer understand the Christian story, assumptions, or language. Michael shares his personal journey from traditional church leadership into missional theology, explaining how the global church must move beyond attractional and recruitment-based evangelism. He clarifies the difference between post-Christian and post-Christendom cultures and explains why many people today still value Christian ethics—like generosity and hospitality—while rejecting religious authority. The conversation reframes evangelism as a relational journey, not a one-time presentation. Michael introduces the "three stories" model—God's story, our personal story, and the other person's story—as a powerful way to share faith in a way that resonates with people who have little or no biblical framework. This episode challenges church planters and leaders to slow down, listen deeply, and trust that God is already at work in people's lives long before the church shows up. Podcast Contents: 00:00–02:00 Introduction to Michael Frost and the missional church conversation. 02:00–08:00 Michael's story: leaving traditional church leadership and discovering missional theology. 08:00–14:00 What "post-Christian" really means—and why it matters for church planters. 14:00–18:00 Why evangelism feels difficult today and what people are reacting against. 18:00–23:00 Evangelism in a post-Christian world vs. a Christian world. 23:00–27:00 The "three stories" model and practical guidance for relational evangelism. 27:00–29:00 Final encouragement for church planters navigating post-Christian contexts.
Preaching Point: Go reach people for Christ by proclaiming the whole Gospel, knowing that while many will mock, God will powerfully save some. Main Text: Acts 17:16–34 (ESV) 16 Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. 18 Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, “What does this babbler wish to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities”—because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection. 19 And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20 For you bring some strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean.” 21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new. 22 So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.' What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28 for “ ‘In him we live and move and have our being'; as even some of your own poets have said, “ ‘For we are indeed his offspring.' 29 Being then God's offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. 30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.” 32 Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked. But others said, “We will hear you again about this.” 33 So Paul went out from their midst. 34 But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them.

Build Our Core (Part 1). We kick off a new series about our church values, with a powerful invitation to follow God's lead to reach people with the gospel.
Traditional Worship | Bishop Bob Hayes | Have you ever asked yourself, “Why does the church exist?” Other than the obvious answer of transforming lives and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, what is a vibrant church called to be or do? Our mission statement of “Reaching People for Jesus Christ, Discipling Them in Faith, and Helping Those in Need” gives us a great start, but is there something more beyond our horizon that God is calling us to see or be engaged in? These are the questions we want to answer in this current capital campaign sermon series, Beyond. This is our moment to boldly pursue God's greater purpose for us, and in doing so, we might also discover how God is leading us to step out in faith. Welcome to Traditional worship. We're glad you're here.

God uses and chooses people to reveal himself to others. Reminds us that God is faithful even when we are not.
God chooses to use people to reach people with the gospel.
“Reach isn't a measure or a strategy for how we get bigger. Reach is a measure of what we're willing to care about.” “We have to wage war against regret.” “We break the patterns of the past by choosing to be faithful in the moment.” Chapters: 00:00 Introduction and Background 07:27 Reaching People and Caring for Their Needs 09:07 Walking with People and Being Helpful 17:19 The Importance of Surrender 23:17 Choosing a Word of the Year 27:58 Living a Life of Beauty and Generosity 30:37 The Power of a Single Word 32:27 Being Intentional and Generative 36:39 Disrupting Old Patterns and Finding Peace 39:43 The Process of Encounter, Formation, and Expression 50:02 Being Cool and Embracing Authenticity Episode Summary: Mike Ashcraft, senior pastor at Port City Community Church, shares his journey and insights on generous leadership. He emphasizes the importance of reaching people and caring about their needs, rather than focusing on building something big. Mike also discusses the value of walking with people and not standing on issues, as well as the significance of surrender and choosing a word of the year. He encourages individuals to focus on who they want to be and to live a life of beauty and generosity. In this conversation, Mike Ashcraft discusses the power of choosing a single word to guide and shape our lives. He emphasizes the importance of being intentional and generative in our actions and thoughts. Mike also shares insights on disrupting old patterns, finding peace in the present moment, and the process of encounter, formation, and expression. He encourages us to be cool and not let our emotions dictate our responses. Ultimately, Mike wants to be remembered as someone who was authentic and actively worked towards becoming the person he aspired to be. R.O.G. Takeaway Tips: Reaching people is about caring for their needs and extending ourselves towards them. Walking with people involves being helpful and asking how we can support them. Surrendering involves trusting God with different aspects of our lives and offering ourselves as a living sacrifice. Choosing a word of the year helps deepen our awareness and focus on who we want to be. Living a life of beauty and generosity involves offering something that isn't necessarily productive or efficient. Choose a single word to guide and shape your life. Be intentional and generative in your actions and thoughts. Disrupt old patterns and find peace in the present moment. Embrace the process of encounter, formation, and expression. Be cool and don't let emotions dictate your responses. Strive to be authentic and actively work towards becoming the person you aspire to be. Guest Bio: Mike Ashcraft serves as the senior pastor at Port City Community Church which he helped start in 1999. He is the author of To Be Concluded and My One Word, as well as a children's picture book, The Bright Idea. He married Julie, his high school sweetheart, in 1992. They grew up in Atlanta and relocated near the beach in southeastern North Carolina. They enjoy family time with their two daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. The beach is Mike's happy place and surfing is the only hobby he needs. Overcoming Pastor-Centricity: Learn strategies for overcoming a culture that has become too focused on the pastor as the sole leader. Benefits of Shared Leadership: We'll highlight the benefits of a more shared leadership model for both the church and its members. Join us as we unpack these topics and more, aiming to foster a healthier, more inclusive church community.
