Guests: Kirstie Failey @ Google Threat Intelligence Group Scott Runnels @ Mandiant Incident Response Topics: What is the hardest thing about turning distinct incident reports into a fun to read and useful report like M-Trends? How much are the lessons and recommendations skewed by the fact that they are all “post-IR” stories? Are “IR-derived” security lessons the best way to improve security? Isn't this a bit like learning how to build safely from fires vs learning safety engineering? The report implies that F500 companies suffer from certain security issues despite their resources, does this automatically mean that smaller companies suffer from the same but more? "Dwell time" metrics sound obvious, but is there magic behind how this is done? Sometimes “dwell tie going down” is not automatically the defender's win, right? What is the expected minimum dwell time? If “it depends”, then what does it depend on? Impactful outliers vs general trends (“by the numbers”), what teaches us more about security? Why do we seem to repeat the mistakes so much in security? Do we think it is useful to give the same advice repeatedly if the data implies that it is correct advice but people clearly do not do it? What is a servant leader? How can we be more submissive to what our path is? Today's guest John Handelsman talks about learning how to follow first, as it may not come naturally to us. He did not grow up in a faith-forward family, so hearing his journey to faith and leadership is very inspiring. Enjoy today's episode. In this episode, you'll discover… Why Win at Home First? (1:20) What is the key trait to winning at work and at home? (2:50) Why was John's way not working anymore? (6:55) How did John do strategic planning differently after being committed to God? In the latest installment of the Innovation Storytellers Show, I had the pleasure of engaging in a profound conversation with Paul Reeder, the Executive Director of the Center for Innovation Strategies at Ohio State University. Our discussion explored what innovation truly means for businesses today, far beyond the superficial trappings that often masquerade as progress. Paul Reeder is a name that resonates with authority in the realm of innovation. His mission at the Center for Innovation Strategies is not just about fostering new ideas; it's about orchestrating a symphony of collaboration that resonates with value creation for a diverse range of stakeholders. From the hallowed halls of Ohio State to the corporate boardrooms of Fortune 500 companies, Paul's influence on innovation is profound. His expertise has been sought after by industry titans such as Procter and Gamble, Honda, and Nationwide Insurance, all seeking to infuse genuine innovation into their DNA. Our conversation was a clarion call against the backdrop of what Paul aptly terms 'Innovation Theater'—a facade of innovation that is all too common in today's corporate world. It's a world where the appearance of innovation is often mistaken for its substance. Paul's insights revealed a troubling trend where companies are quick to set up flashy innovation studios, complete with trendy furniture and attire, mistaking these superficial elements for the heart of innovation. However, Paul argues that true innovation is not about the optics; it's about the impact. It's about understanding and serving customer needs in ways previously unimagined, identifying new customer segments, and creating a 'blip in our business' that signifies real growth and evolution. This kind of innovation doesn't just happen; it requires a cultural shift and a commitment from every level of the organization, especially the C-suite. Throughout our discussion, Paul emphasized the need for a new paradigm to measure innovation—one that accounts for cultural change, customer engagement, and the ability to break new ground. We discuss how traditional metrics like cash ROI fall short in capturing the essence of innovation, which is as much about the journey as it is about the destination. As we wrapped up our conversation, it was clear that Paul's vision for innovation is both a challenge and an invitation. It's a challenge to businesses to look beyond their walls and engage with external innovation groups, creating partnerships that fuel creativity and drive growth. It's an invitation to step out of the conventional box and embrace a broader vision of what innovation can be—a strategic pillar essential to the future of any organization.

When it comes to circuit assemblies, there are defects, which result in one of two situations. The preferred result of a defect is to capture it on your factory floor and repair it before it ships to the customer. The second scenario is referred to as an escape. That's when the board ships to the customer and fails in the field. This is a scenario, all assemblers dread and strive to prevent. One way to prevent escapes is through the use of automated inspection or AOI systems. My guests today are Arif Virani, Chief Operating Officer and co-founder of Darwin AI, and Bart Piwowar, CTO of Darwin AI, a manufacturer of innovative inspection systems.Arif Virani is a technology leader with over 20 years of experience in the industry. Trip Wheeler - Is inflation eating your catering profits?Inflation has taken a bite out of the profits of every wedding and event business. It's not just food and supplies, it's gas, shipping, supply chain disruptions and more. You just spend less on your food which increases your profit with no effort. It's one of those rare times where it sounds too good to be true, but it's not. My guest today is Diego Borgo (https://www.linkedin.com/in/diegoborgo/ ), Strategic Advisor to F500 brands on how to enter the Metaverse and Web3. Diego's lifetime personal brand is clear: one, he is an outsider, having moved 35 times in 33 years; two he is always looking at things differently, and challenging the status quo; and three he aspires to build personal freedom, which goes beyond money, as it is about the freedom to do what he wants when he wants. His career in marketing started at 16 in 2007, where he helped brands like Samsung, Warner Bros and Microsoft understand the world of eSports. He then took those learnings to the client side at Adidas which is where he was introduced to web3. Most recently he has advised brands like Porsche, Salesforce and Shell on web3 strategies. He has a masterclass on bringing brands into the space, and it shows because his thinking is so clear on how to approach legacy brands and introduce web3. We Discuss:Why NFTs were the first unlock because he saw the technology as Brand plus Culture. Why he always advises to follow your natural inclinations, do what feels natural, what feels almost like a magnet - if things are boring then switch it up.Why echo chambers and group-think always need added perspective. In web3 we only talk about web3 so it can seem like a lot of the same thoughts, but if you go outside to random people they have no ideaHow to bring web3 to F500 brands - reverse engineer the WHY by asking 2 questions:(1)How do you think this will impact your business?(2)How should we go about doing that? The answer to these questions comes down to who is your target audience? Is it a current customer base (non-Web3) or new audience (Web3)?Porsche and Adidas wanted the Web3 natives, the degensShell wants to use NFTs for energy provenance or energy sharingHow do you know where to start with the audience?-What is your brand strategy? Where do you want to be in 5-10 years?-Where are you coming in as a consultant? Do they already have a team or are they in the education phase?Reverse engineering your WHY, is your brand strategy, it is where you want to be in 5-10 years-This is the ultimate question to determine what web3 strategy to use because if it is not consistent with brand strategy then it is bullshit-If it does align with brand strategy then we look at the business side, the feasibility, what are some realistic impacts on the business - SPOILER ALERT - it is not always generating more revenue, there are other impacts it could have like loyalty, or CXWhen should you not work with a company on web3 strategy?-When the brand strategy does not align with the business case in a way that is realistic and consistent with web3 valuesCurrent trends are look to current strategies like loyalty and membership, and using web3 as a way to make them stronger in the long runBuilding belief inside an org(1) Learn as a collective: (a) Create a way for the team to interact - POAP for a meeting; (b) Create a way for the team to see their customers interact - POAP for an event(2) Look at the data: (a) what does their intent data (wallet data) say, how can we adjust strategy based on that dataWhat happens to the experience for a person as a consumer and as an employee when all of their interactions across websites and IRL are connected by a digital wallet? Why brand is culture and culture is brand, and what happens when technology intersects that is when there will be a revolutionThree Levels of Partnerships(1)Project-based - PFPs, Communities or Artists - align values(2)Technology -...
