What do Albert Einstein, the Jesus People,  and Donald Trump all have in common? According to historian and journalist Molly Worthen, they're all part of a surprising American story about the strange, magnetic force we call charisma. In this episode, Russell Moore sits down with Worthen to explore the themes of her new book, Spellbound: How Charisma Shaped American History, and why understanding charisma may be the key to understanding American religion, politics, and even ourselves.   From revival tents to campaign rallies to cable news sets, Worthen tracks five distinct types of charisma that have shaped our country's imagination—from JFK to your local megachurch pastor. Why do some people command a room without saying a word, while others say everything and still lose the crowd?   Moore and Worthen dig into the seduction and danger of charisma, its role in religious experience, and how it can drive both conversion and cults of personality. They also reflect on Worthen's own journey from atheism to faith, and why figures such as Tim Keller and J.D. Greear played unexpected roles in that story. Plus: the only time Russell Moore has ever found himself in a room full of unconscious people, all but him on the floor—and what that has to do with spiritual longing.   If you've ever wondered why we're drawn to certain voices, movements, or personalities—and how those forces shape the American soul—this conversation will leave you thinking, and maybe even unsettled. In today's conversation on Digging Deeper, Jeff and Laura talk with J.D. Greear, pastor of The Summit Church, about the mission of the church and church planting. They discuss the need for churches to equip members for mission rather than catering to consumerism. J.D. discusses the importance of recognizing the call to mission. It's not about if you're called, but where and how God leads you to be on mission for Him. Together, the three discuss the challenges of sustaining passion for their mission in the face of personal struggles and sufferings. They emphasize the significance of the Christian community in providing support and guidance during these times. We hope this episode encourages you to seek opportunities for evangelism in everyday life, being confident that even in times of personal struggle, God can use you to impact others. Ep. 386: With Coffee Tables, and Over Coffee Churches find simple, direct ways to serve refugees

COLUMBUS, Ohio (BP) – It happens with a couch or mattress. It happens with two chairs facing each other across a table. While refugees' initial days and months in America can be complex and filled with paperwork and immigration meetings, churches have learned there are direct, simple ways to meet needs. Not long after it began six years ago, Living Hope Church in Columbus was helping deliver donated furniture on behalf of a group of non-profit organizations. It became apparent that the items were going toward a growing migrant population consisting of those from the Middle East and Central America. The white, middle-class community that Aaron Taylor, Living Hope's pastor, had grown up in was rapidly changing. Members of Living Hope Church in Columbus, Ohio, load items for its ministry center / Photo by Aaron Taylor “There are pockets of these communities around with people moving in from all over the world, and it opened our eyes,” he said. The need grew, and soon the church took it on as its own. It began with a question to their non-profit partners: What would they like to see available to the refugee population? The answer was a furniture store. “About five months after that, we opened a ministry center next to our church that now serves 12-20 families a month on average,” Taylor said. “It stays stocked through approximately 12 non- or for-profit groups, so it doesn't cost the church.” Sometimes new mattresses arrive by way of a nonprofit donation. Coffeemakers and toasters get to the shelves through Walmart overstock. Recliners and other furniture items with small scratches or dents that prevent them from making the showroom floor are more than suitable for clients of the Living Hope ministry center. “When we step in, in many cases we're able to provide the large items for, say, a two-bedroom apartment,” Taylor said. “It changes the game for families.” One essential need has brought major benefits to children trying to acclimate to American schools. “We've provided children with beds and have heard back from school counselors that the child came to their school and had low grades and was always tired. They would have a lot of emotions to process still,” Taylor said. “They'll get a bed of their own and six or eight weeks later the counselors will say it isn't the same kid. Their entire demeanor has shifted.” Further east, about 20 members of Pillar Church in Dumfries, Va., help with the English as a Second Language classes that benefit primarily those who have fled Afghanistan since the Taliban retook the country in 2021. Pastor Colby Garman said the benefits go both ways. “The conversations with our people have brought another level of understanding [for the situation],” he said. “It puts a face on what is a challenging problem and what it's like to build a new life in America.” His wife Annie taught ESL for years in public schools and brought those concepts to the English immersion classes. The people his church serves are not believers, but the time together has led to discussions about faith. “Many of them had family members who were killed and they're trying to figure out what's next. It has become an open door for the Gospel,” said Garman, whose church lies just south of Washington, D.C., and is located near Marine Corps Base Quantico, where more than 3,700 Afghan refugees were received and cared for when the Taliban took over. In Columbus, Taylor has seen similar benefits to his church stepping forward to help. “It's been good for us,” he said. “I remember [former SBC president] J.D. Greear asking years ago that if our church closed its doors, would the community know we were gone? This has been a good way for us to establish a presence for our church that is meeting a tangible need. “It has also led us to become a multilingual, multiethnic church. We have people from seven nations. Our worship services are two languages.

But God was providentially at work and led her to the portion of the field belonging to Boaz, who, as a near relative of Elimelech, was a potential benefactor.""God is always doing 10,000 things in your life, and you may be aware of three of them" (Pastor John Piper)."This is a BIG message in a SHORT story. It shows how God is constructing his grand story out of the small, seemingly inconsequential stories of everyday people. This little story is intentionally framed at the beginning and end by the larger storyline of the Bible. Ruth shows how God is at work in the day to day activities of average people. All the characters face life's normal challenges (death, moving, lack of financial resources, familial responsibilities, etc.) and find God is weaving a story of redemption out of all the details. The Book of Ruth encourages us to view our day-to-day lives as part of God's bigger plan for our lives and world" (The Bible Project)."The characters talk about God a few times, but the narrator hardly ever mentions God explicitly doing anything in the story. This is its subtle brilliance because God's providence is at work behind every scene, weaving together the lives of the characters" (The Bible Project)."Endurance is faith expressed over time" (Pastor J. D. Greear).Scriptures referenced:Ruth 1:1-5Ruth 1:15-18Ruth 2:1-17Leviticus 19:9-10Leviticus 23:22Deuteronomy 24:19-22Ruth 2:20-23Ruth 3:1-13Deuteronomy 25:5-10Matthew 22:23-33Ruth 3:16-18I WANT TO BE DISCIPLEDI am on staff with another ministry called Mentoring Men for the Master (M3). It's tempting at times to read the Bible through a human-centric lens, as though we are the main character in each narrative. But in so doing, we're in danger of missing the larger point of stories like Joshua and the city of Jericho. In this week's message from Hebrews 11, Pastor J.D. shows us how this key moment in Joshua's life holds a valuable lesson for us: Rather than orienting our lives around trying to get God “on our side,” we ought to be asking what God wants to do and how we can join him in it.

We'll explore challenging faith questions that many grapple with or may encounter when interacting with others.  This episode promises to be concise yet impactful for anyone seeking answers or desiring to support loved ones on their spiritual journey. J.D. Greear's book, 12 Truths & a Lie: Answers to Life's Biggest Questions, guides our discussion. We'll address prevalent lies we may believe, how God transforms doubt, the reasons behind suffering, unanswered prayers, and the persistent struggle with anxiety despite faith. Join J.D. and I as we talk about:  The big lie we believe God can use our doubts If God is in control, why is there suffering Why isn't God answering my prayers If I am a believer, why do I still struggle with anxiety Favorite quotes:   (4:08)- “The majority of our Bible is written by people who are in a season of doubt whether we are talking about the Old Testament or New Testament.” (5:03)- “Doubt is often divinely used as a way of drawing you deeper into who God is and the majesty and mystery of who he is.” (10:59) - “One of the things you find is when you are praying you are praying to a God who is not only infinite in power and infinite in love. He is also infinite in wisdom.” (11:44)—“Sometimes, He says be persistent and keep asking and knocking, but sometimes, He says he heard you. He is always answering, but the answer right now is: I know more than you, and I am going to do something better than what you're asking.” Coaching this week: (21:14)  Simple Things That Give You the Most ROI Today in coaching, I share a list of easy-to-do things that can have a huge impact on your daily life.
