Rachael O'Meara was a customer support manager at Google when she realized she was burned out and needed to reassess her path. The best way to do this was to take a “pause”—a time-out to create space for her inner voice to be heard and to align her actions to lead a more fulfilled life. Pause: Harnessing the Life-Changing Power of Giving Yourself a Break is her new book, serving as a GPS for others looking to slow down before speeding up again. So what is a “pause”? Rachael defines a pause as any intentional shift in behavior that allows you the space to experience a mental shift in attitude, thoughts, or emotions that otherwise wouldn't have occurred. Pausing can be as simple as a five- minute walk outside, or a day spent unplugged from digital devices. A pause is about taking a time-out to create the space for your inner voice to be heard and to align your actions with that voice in order lead a more meaningful, fulfilled life. Pausing offers you a chance to remember what “lights you up,” and allows you to identify your yearnings, shift your limiting beliefs, recognize and better understand what's called “amygdala hijacks,” and discover how your relationships with others affect you. Rachael O'Meara is a transformational leadership coach, assisting others to fulfill their potential. She is a sales executive at Google and also hosts authors who have meaningful messages about mindfulness and emotional intelligence for the TalksAtGoogle YouTube channel. Weaving in psychology, existentialism, and neuroscience-based research, Rachael explains how pausing can boost your emotional intelligence and ability to act, feel, and communicate authentically and responsibly through her and others' stories of pausing. She helps you create your own “Pause Plan,” regardless of how much time, money, or resources you have, and explains the different ways you can learn to meaningfully pause—whether for sixty seconds a day, an hour, a week, or over the course of several months—and discover what you value most, to lead the most satisfying and fulfilling life you choose. Rachael also writes regularly for the Huffington Post and has been featured in the New York Times https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/27/jobs/career-pause-sabbaticals-unpaid-leaves.html?_r=1and on WSJ.com. She leads workshops and speaks on the practice of pausing. She is certified in Transformational Coaching from the Wright Graduate University for the Realization of Human Potential (ICF certified), and has an MBA from Fordham University.
Darlene and Mike discuss why it's important to pause. From taking a deep breath to reflecting on success, pausing is imperative to sustained success. This week we are taking a timeout. Why? Well, our guest Rachael O’Meara believes that a “pause” in our normal routine is a lost art that we desperately need. Rachael has worked for Google for several years and had a life-changing experience when she decided to take a three-month unpaid leave from the company. She used this time to rediscover herself and connect with the core of who she was. She now teaches others to shift their behavior and become more self-aware. Her book, Pause Harnessing the Life-Changing Power of Giving Yourself a Break helps others practice the state of “simply being” and being more in tune with who they are. This is a powerful episode for those who struggle with slowing down (Heather is raising her hand now), being in the moment, and tuning in with what your heart is saying. I encourage you to connect with Rachael O’Meara on her website and check out her book on Amazon. ----- For access to our free Morning Habit Tracker click here https://www.heatherparady.com/morning/ Connect with us! Rachael says a pause is an intentional shift in behaviour that helps you lead a more meaningful and satisfying life. Takeaways We often operate our business from a position of survival or burnout but our peak performance is sitting on the other side of the road The only way we can get into a place of peak performance is through renewal Five signs you know you need a pause: you used to love what you do now you loathe it, your boss tells you it’s not working out, you need a technology intervention, there is a challenge, there is an opportunity Not knowing what to do next in your business? It might be time to pause Pausing is in service to the doing
Welcome back to the Miss Bossy Boots podcast, brought to you by your two Bossy co-hosts Stacey Morgan and Jane Hillsdon. Stace and Jane love a good read. And for us, it has to be a real book - not the kindle type #fyi. We have a ferocious appetite for books that help us become a better person in life and in business so we both find that this is what we mostly read about. We had such good feedback from our previous episode where we covered books we love, we thought we'd talk about the latest lot we've just read. We talk about: The Barefoot Investor - Scott Pape (yep, we know this is not really original - but Jeez it provides such valuable advice!) Pause: Harnessing the Life-Changing Power of Giving Yourself a Break - Rachael O'Meara The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F$%# - Mark Manson Purpose - Lisa Messenger Join us as we pour over these titles and provide our thoughts around what these books had to offer.
In this episode, Kevin discusses harnessing the life-changing power of giving yourself a break with guest, Rachael O'Meara. Rachael is an executive at Google and a transformational leadership coach. According to Rachael, a pause is “any intentional shift in behavior that allows you the space to experience a mental shift in attitude, thoughts, or emotions that otherwise would not have occurred.” You're stressed out at your job; you're torn between work and family; your motivation and productivity are taking a nosedive. Your impulse might be to lean in and tough it out, but what you may really need to do is take a step back. Her new book is PAUSE: Harnessing the Life-Changing Power of Giving Yourself a Break. Welcome to the Emerging Women podcast, where we hear from brilliant women leaders creating big change in the world. I’m Chantal Pierrat, your host, and my guest is Rachael O’Meara who is starting a movement - the Power of Pause. Rachael was a constant achiever who took on a stretchy position at Google which led to a lot of negative feedback: physically, emotionally, and from others. Rachael authored the book Pause: Harnessing the Life Changing Power of Giving Yourself a Break after she made the intentional decision to get more in line with her true self instead of beating herself up trying to force a life that was no longer working. In today’s podcast we discuss burnout as a blessing, failure as feedback, and how to recognize signs that you need a pause. Rachael shares specific ways to pause and how to check in with yourself when presented with conflicting options so you stay true to your deep yearnings. And we learn about TASERing - a practice Rachael developed to help us mentally floss our brains of limiting false beliefs. I’m glad you’re taking this pause in your day to tune in to our conversation “Pause” with go-getter turned power pauser, Rachael O’Meara.
Join Priscilla McKinney, CEO and Momma Bird at Little Bird Marketing as she chats with Rachael O'Meara, the author of Pause: Harnessing the Life-Changing Power of Giving Yourself a Break. Having first met at Emerging Women conference, these two had an immediate connection on the drive for living for their "why" instead of solely for the paycheck and glory. They both had been anxiously awaiting the release of this first book and deliver thought provoking conversation on finding meaning along the way to a successful career. To answer the age old question, you can have it all and it can be awesome, but it first must be #pausesome. Rachael expounds on some pretty powerful messages about how to incorporate mindfulness into an already pressing schedule. In fact, most oft the pauses she recommends are tiny habits with long-lasting benefits. First they discuss recognizing the signs that you desperately need a pause and then she offers simple tools to get yourself back into alignment with your values and your authenticity. If you're ready to lead a more fulfilling life, intentionally aligned with your personal goals and in tune with your emotional intelligence, then you're ready for Pause! "The Wisdom is in the Pause.. I am here to remind you not to fear the pause... Some of the most courageous people I know are scared of it, as I have been myself." - Alice Walker, nobel prize winning writer of the Color Purple. You and I both know that we NEED to pause on a consistent basis - daily, weekly, monthly, yearly. The scientests have finally proven what yogis and mystics have known for centuries - not only does taking a pause - be it sleep, meditation or a walk in nature - clear our minds and restore our bodies - it literally is what Wisdom requires if you want to run your life from Wisdom vs the collective overculture, status quo and conventional wisdom. Yet left to our habits and patterns we will choose to fill the space, or run the outdated "i don't have time program" and then as a result focus on the wrong things, or too many things and our power gets fragmented and our lifeforce drained. This is where using what I call the Feminine Super Power of Pause + the practice of power pausing can help in big ways. Join Christine Arylo, women's leadership advisor and wisdom teacher, and her special guest Rachael O'Meara, author of the book Pause, for this Feminine Power Time: "Power Pauses: The Feminine Super Power Practice of Pausing": Why we need the pause and why we fear the pause - this is deep! How to tap into the power of the pause to make it part of your days, weeks, months and years - to increase your vitality, keep your sanity, stay focused on what matters How to use the power pause in your career when you know you need a change or things aren't working, but you don't know how A special pause meditation to get connected to what Wisdom is trying to communicate to you now. This episode of Feminine Power Time is #4 in the Breaking Through the Myth of Balance Series. I met Rachael O'Meara on a boat ride on the Columbia River in Portland, OR. We were both attending Chris Guillebeau's WDS event.
