And realize that the only thing that I can control is how I react to the situation. When experiencing difficult times with family health it would be easy to get angry, frustrated and allow negative emotions to be destructive to yourself and those around you. Instead, make a disciplined decision (with help from trusted friends, loved ones) to have a positive attitude and make the best of a difficult situation. When going through difficult times thing about: “What does this make possible?” In Rob's situation, he was able to spend focused time with his son and get help from the doctors that may improve his son's health. Charlie's Lesson Learned: Time is the most valuable, precious resource. Become a protector and defender of your time. Time goes by so fast, take the time and be intentional about the impact you are having with your time. Sometimes we get caught up on thinking of past wrongs and/or mistakes and it can negatively affect our present performance and quality of life. Be present! See Lesson Learned #1: Control what you can control. Sometimes the only thing you can control is only your reaction to difficult situations. Charlie and Rob, Final Lesson Learned: Practice Gratitude! It will improve every aspect of your life and those around you. Without practicing gratitude, other things in your life will suffer: Mental health, physical health, quality of relationships, your positive impact on those around you. By practicing gratitude, you become a person other people enjoy being around. Your positive influence grows as your gratitude, even during difficult times, encourages others who may be struggling.

Today's guest, Lucas Carlson, was CEO of AppFog, and now works as CTO of LEADx. He's had plenty of experience building up companies and even seeing them through to acquisition. Today, he dives into some fascinating topics, including what happens when large companies ghost small startups during the acquisition process. He says it's not something that makes the headlines, but it's something that happens all too often. Building Other People's Dreams Lucas has been a computer programmer since he was in middle school in 1996. He can still remember writing his first HTML website and getting hooked. Lucas continued to build websites through high school, and he knew then it was what he wanted to do. Wanting to broaden his horizons, Lucas went to college for physics. After that, he went right back to computers, building startups for other people. People would come to him with their ideas, and he would take the idea through the early stages, sometimes all the way through to an exit. One project he worked on, Measure Map, was later bought by Google. Another success was Mog, a music streaming service. Lucas helped to grow that from an idea to millions of users. He says it was exciting, taking something from inception to mass adoption. Shortly after Lucas left, the company was sold to Beats. Left In A Lurch The story leading up to the sale of AppFog to CenturyLink has never been told publicly before, but Lucas thinks it holds a valuable lesson. Lucas was able to raise $10million for AppFog, but as they grew rapidly, so did their need for more funds. Unfortunately, just as they went out to raise more capital, the market had just dried up. Lucas decided instead to reach out to strategic partners and ask them if they'd like to invest. People were very excited to get involved. Things were going great until one company said, why don't we just acquire you. Lucas brought the idea to his board, who said he should go for it. When Lucas asked if they should get an investment banker involved and shop around, the board told him he should just take the deal. Looking back, Lucas wishes he would've pushed the idea more. Anyway, everything had been agreed on, and everything was in order, but just weeks before closing, the acquiring company ghosted Lucas. When he finally got through to them, they said they didn't hit their earnings and that their stock had fallen 25%, and they weren't in a position to go through with the deal. This left Lucas between a rock and a hard place, almost having to close down his company. Lucas ended up laying off staff and hiring an investment banker. This is when they came across CenturyLink and a deal was made. What Lucas Is Working On Now Lucas is right back where he belongs, as a CTO. He says he feels most comfortable handling the tech side, while someone else handles the business side. He's co-founded LEADx, an AI-powered coaching platform. To check it out, visit www.leadx.org. Today our expert guest is Kevin Kruse, the founder and CEO of LEADx, whose mission is to spark the next 100 million leaders through the use of AI-powered leadership coaching. He's also the host of the LEADx Leadership Podcast, a Forbes columnist, and New York Times best-selling author of nine books, including “15 Secrets Successful People Know About Time Management” and his latest, “Great Leaders Have No Rules.” When he was a teenager, Kevin saw his father try to be an entrepreneur and almost lose everything, but rather than scaring him away from that path, it solidified his desire to have a hand in his own future. Kevin's latest book “Great Leaders Have No Rules” is, contrary to the title, not about breaking the rules or being a rebel—it's about the problems with rules in general. Every time we bump into a rule, it takes away an opportunity to make a choice. And every time we have a choice taken away from us, we feel less engaged, less a part of the company we work for. Instead of forcing rules onto people, we can get them to buy into the shared values of the company and feel like they are contributing to the team. He started several companies from the age of 22 on, and his first few companies crashed and burned. He didn't understand how to manage his time. He didn't understand leadership. Eventually, he realized that, if you want to do great things, you need a talented team of people and you need to lead them effectively. The less time he spent working on the company and the more he spent on leadership and culture, the better his companies did. After seeing a huge advance in artificial intelligence, and noticing that it was now being used for cognitive behavioral therapy, Kevin asked himself: why couldn't it be used to coach people for leadership? That's the premise behind his new company, LEADx. You can download the app directly from Google or Apple right now. The goal is not to mimic a coaching conversation, but imitating the process. In behavior change studies, there have been increases in employee engagement and productivity while also seeing reductions of stress. It's very early, but the progress is encouraging. If you can afford a human coach, you can and should still get a human coach. But for a fraction of the price, you can get a coach-like experience that will give you progress in the areas that you want to focus on. Coaching should be accessible to everyone, and LEADx is aiming to lead the charge in creating that future.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “Leadership isn't a choice. You are a leader whether you want to be or not. Leadership boils down to influence, and what we know from behavioral psychology is that we are influencing people all the time, whether we want to or not. Whether you are at home or at work, you are leading your family, you are leading your team members, you are leading people out in the world. Don't take your actions for granted. When you speak up, you're influencing people. When you choose to stay silent, you're influencing people. When you're taking action, you're influencing people, and when you're a bystander, that's influencing people. You're always influencing people. [24:04] Rules start from a good place, but over time, when the rule is broken or unmet, it causes defensiveness and dishonesty. [25:33] A conversation must be had about the expectations and boundaries within the rules. The more a team understands why the rules are there in the first place, the more likely they are to be compliant. [26:07] Set boundaries as a team. [26:33] When we bump into a rule it is not the end of the world but an opportunity for feedback and a teachable moment. [36:47] Constant screen time impacts our ability to be immersed in the moment and connect fully with others.
