Sunday Morning Message: Acts 4:23-31
The Believers Pray for BoldnessActs 4:23-31 (KJV) And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. 24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: 25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? 26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. 27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, 28 For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. 29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, 30 By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. 31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
May 14, 2023Acts 4:23-31Why You Should Pray For Boldness1. Boldness answers the questions beforehand, v. 23“Unless I am convinced by Scripture and plain reason, my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not recant anything, for to go against conscience would be neither right nor safe. God help me. Here I stand, I can do no other.” -Martin Luther“But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. 15 But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, 16 saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.” 18 So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” 21 And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.” -Acts 4:14-222. Boldness comes from right doctrine, v. 24-28“The conviction that Christian doctrine matters for Christian living is one of the most important growth points of the Christian life.” -Sinclair FergusonFour biblical doctrines from the text...a) sovereignty of God, v. 24b) creation, v. 24c) inspiration of Scripture, v. 25 God….Holy Spirit…David…Psalm 2“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” -2 Timothy 3:16d) prophecy, v. 25-273. Boldness is about continuing not starting, v. 29-31Mental worship…If you continue living as you are right now will more people be in heaven as a result of your life? What question, if answered, would produce more boldness in you? What is one biblical doctrine you want to better understand?Would you rather be popular or bold? What are the five most life shaping things you believe right now?

As we continue our series of messages on prayers in the Bible, we consider the question: "What does it mean to show boldness as a Christian today?" As we look through the New Testament it is clear that boldness in the face of opposition and even persecution was required for believers. It is a message to consider this week. ---------- Of course, we know that there are those that face the same threat as those New Testament Christians, but for many of us, we face very little in the way of persecution for our beliefs and fairly light opposition to our faith in our day-to-day life; at least as it stands today. ---------- However, we have seen a gradual shift in the perception and portrayal of those who are considered truly committed to faith and to the Word of God. If we are honest, that "shift" is accelerating more and more. We may not be far from seeing slight opposition move to a more combative form of animosity toward Biblical morals and those who commit to them. The next logical step (as we see in the Scriptures) would be outright hostility and persecution.

After their first arrest and being threatened by the Jewish authorities, the early church did not try to seize political power or rally the people in rebellion. They did not even pray to be spared the pain of persecution. They recognized the weakness of their enemies' threats and prayed, “Grant to your servants to continue to speak your […]
