Where do you turn for wisdom in a confusing world? False teachings, whether from culture, politics, or our own ideas, twist our understanding of right and wrong. Only by building our lives on the true gospel can we find our way through a confusing world, live as God wants, and join in God's ongoing work of restoration.

This episode traces the Stoic lineage back to Socrates, whose probing questions revealed that health, wealth, and reputation are not inherently good or bad—their value lies in how we use them. From Xenophon's dialogues to Cicero's reflections, we see how wisdom became the touchstone for discerning what truly matters. Fortune's gifts and losses come and go, but virtue remains unshakeable. The Stoic message endures: our real possessions are inward ones, the moral resources that no change of fate can ever take away.
This is a live recorded message from Sunday service at City of Refuge South in Thomaston, GA. Thanks for listening. We pray it blesses you!
At a time of “hot wars” across the globe, there's also an ideological “cold war” featuring two foes: those who embrace freedom and those who oppress it. Michael McFaul, the Hoover Institution's Peter and Helen Bing Senior Fellow and author of the newly released Autocrats vs. Democrats: China, America, Russia and the New Global Disorder, joins GoodFellows regulars John Cochrane and Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster to discuss where he departs from the Trump administration on its approach to Russia and China (one autocracy economically dwarfing the other), his suggestions for course change, and why he holds “guarded” optimism for America's future. After that: John and H.R. go “trick-or-treating”—weighing the pros (“treats”) and cons (“tricks”) of a new White House ballroom, a Chinese military purge, the latest inflation numbers and gold prices that no longer glitter, a CEO's tariff worries, New York City on a non-hallowed eve of “democratic socialism,” plus a new and tougher American citizenship test (could Sir Niall Ferguson pass it?). Finally, as Halloween approaches, John and H.R. give us their go-to candies. Subscribe to GoodFellows for clarity on today's biggest social, economic, and geostrategic shifts — only on GoodFellows.

In this episode, Jerry and Stably discuss Hanno Sauer's book, "The Invention of Good and Evil: A World History of Morality." The discussion highlighted the book's exploration of cooperation in early hominid evolution, the emergence of punishment, the impact of agriculture and "big gods," and the influence of the Catholic Church on Western individualism.
Fr. Mike walks us through the current battles of Judas Maccabeus and the Israelite people, emphasizing that while war is violent, freedom to belong to God and worship him is worth fighting for. He also discusses the importance of spending time with virtuous people to acquire their positive qualities and the need to seek good rather than evil to attain the riches of heaven. Today's readings are from 1 Maccabees 5, Sirach 13-15, and Proverbs 22:13-16. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. October 12 Text – Revelation 11:19 – 12:17 Title – The Cosmic Battle of Good and Evil Jon Sherrill, preaching
Fr. Mike summarizes the final moments of the book of Nehemiah, when Nehemiah returns to find the people of Israel being unfaithful to God's commandments and marrying foreign wives. Fr. Mike connects this to our lives, as we too often confuse God's unending love for us to mean that he always wants what we want.Today's readings are Nehemiah 13, Malachi 1-4, and Proverbs 21: 25-28. People often ask how can a good merciful God allow for all the evil in our world to happen? The apostles experienced this question, asking Jesus to increase their faith, as people of faith can understand the evil of the crucifixion which was necessary as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. Being grateful to God is how people are able to put the evil of the world into perspective, having faith that grows like a mustard seed.
Today, the world is flooded with information but lacks wisdom. Confusion and deception are everywhere. The line between right and wrong has blurred, truth is challenged, and many believers struggle to discern the voice of God amid the noise. In "Wisdom – Discerning Good & Evil", Duane Sheriff teaches that wisdom is more than knowledge—it's the ability to discern between good and evil, a skill desperately needed in our complex world. The story of Solomon asking God for wisdom reminds us how to approach our spiritual journey. Just as Solomon didn't ask for riches or long life but for understanding to lead God's people, we too must prioritize godly wisdom above worldly pursuits. As God restores discernment in His Church, believers are called to rise with clarity, conviction, and compassion. Pursue godly wisdom like hidden treasure—it's time to awaken, walk in truth, and shine as lights pushing back the darkness in this generation.

The Bros come in hot on this one—FireBro, SavageBro, The Chief, and Dark Doc wrestle with the biggest themes yet: good, evil, submission, and how all of it bleeds into marriage, politics, and spiritual life. They kick off with some banter about recording mishaps and Doc's sun-soaked arrival fresh off a cruise, then dive headfirst into the heavy stuff. The assassination of Charlie Kirk serves as a flashpoint, sparking raw reflections on political violence, cancel culture flipping back on itself, and the unsettling loss of respect for human life. The Chief frames it as a moral and spiritual war—values being murdered alongside the man. SavageBro and FireBro point out the dangers of censorship, mob celebration of violence, and how ideologies can become “possessions” that blind people to basic humanity. Reuben brings a global perspective, noting that political violence is nothing new in places like Africa but raises the concern: is America heading down the same path? The Bros don't shy away from cultural flashpoints—gender ideology, family structure, free speech, and faith all get laid bare. The tone is fiery but heartfelt: an urgent plea not to grow numb, not to let evil slide in by small degrees, and not to let the war for souls be mistaken for just politics.By the end, the conversation circles back to the home front—how husbands and wives navigate submission, strength, and spiritual leadership in marriage. It's messy, it's real, and it's the Bros at their rawest: calling out darkness while wrestling with their own role in fighting for the good.#WhiskeyBros, #WhiskeyBrosPodcast, #TheUnprofessionals, #Unprofessionals, #CertifiedUnprofessional, #TheProblemWithSubmission, #WarBetweenGoodAndEvil, #FaithAndFire, #MarriageAndMorals, #SpiritualBattle, #ModernStruggles, #DeepEndDiscussion, #TruthVsDeception, #LightAndDarkness, #BalconesWhiskey, #RedRiverDistillery, #VermejoAnejo, #BlueCornWhiskey, #TexasWhiskey, #WhiskeyOfTheWeek, #ThePoint, #LaneAkin, #NLaneAkin
In order to deal with the moral confusion in contemporary society, we must emphasize the need to be able to discern between good and evil. Our modern culture is increasingly upside down in this matter. "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" (Isaiah 5:20) Other passages warn against justifying the wicked and condemning the righteous. Cain and Abel show us that the wicked have hated the righteous since the beginning - enough to murder them. They murdered the prophets, they murdered Jesus, and the Apostles, and the martyrs, and they still do it today, as we have witnessed this week. The battle is spiritual, not political, and not carnal. We MUST return to biblical standards of righteousness! Stand firm in the faith and recognize that true change begins with individual commitment to God's word and the courage to reject worldly influences.

On today's episode I explore whether we can be so polarized in our thoughts and beliefs to 100% think that we can determine what is good and evil. To speak in terms of good and evil is to flatten reality. It is to reduce the infinite nuance of being into a two-dimensional moral cartoon. It pretends at clarity, but at great cost: the cost of understanding, the cost of compassion, the cost of truth. These insight sub-episodes are mirrored on our primary YouTube channel which can be found at https://www.youtube.com/@NilesHeckman/videos
In 1981, 21-year-old Danny Hansford was shot and killed inside one of Savannah's grandest mansions. The man who pulled the trigger, antiques dealer Jim Williams, claimed self-defense. What followed was a legal circus resulting in four high-profile trials. Then, less than a year later after the dust settled, Williams was dead. This is the case that inspired Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the bestselling book that turned Savannah into a gothic brand. But the real story is messier than the myth. In this sweeping new history of humanity, told through the prism of our ever-changing moral norms and values, Hanno Sauer shows how modern society is just the latest step in the long evolution of good and evil and everything in between. What makes us moral beings? How do we decide what is good and what is evil? And has it always been that way? Hanno Sauer's sweeping new history of humanity, covering five million years of our universal moral values, comes at a crucial moment of crisis for those values, and helps to explain how they arose -- and why we need them. We humans were born to cooperate, but everywhere we find ourselves in conflict. The way we live together has changed fundamentally in recent decades: global mobility, demographic upheaval, migration movements, and digital networking, have all called the moral foundations of human communities into question. Modern societies are in crisis: a shared universal morality seems to be a thing of the past. Hanno Sauer explains why this appearance is deceptive: in fact, there are universal values that all people share. If we understand the origin of our morality, we can understand its future too. With philosophical expertise and empirical data, Sauer explains how processes of biological, cultural, social, and historical evolution shaped the moral grammar that defines our present. Seven chapters recount the crucial moral upheavals of human history showing how the emergence of humankind five million years ago, the rise of first civilizations 5,000 years ago, and the dynamics of moral progress in the last fifty years are interrelated. This genealogical perspective allows us, on the one hand, to see the contradictions and potential conflicts of our moral identities; on the other, it makes clear that we share fundamental values that apply to all human beings at all times. Sauer's elegant prose, translated into English by Jo Heinrich, brings the history of humanity to vivid new life. Love to hear from you; “Send us a Text Message”We explore Father Gabriele Amorth's book "God Most Powerful," which serves as a practical handbook for spiritual warfare. Rather than becoming obsessed with evil, Father Amorth encourages us to focus on strengthening our relationship with God through prayer, sacraments, and embracing truth. The best defense against darkness isn't fear but cultivating goodness and wonder in our daily lives. The conversation takes a fascinating turn as we discuss how young people today are desperately seeking meaning in a culture that often reduces humans to mere biological accidents. As one psychiatrist observed, "Young men will crawl over broken glass to find meaning." This search becomes particularly challenging when our society distorts language and rejects fundamental realities about human nature. St. Edith Stein's profound wisdom offers guidance: "Speak the truth in love and love people in the truth. One without the other is a destructive lie."Michael also reveals how developing relationships with saints provides spiritual allies in times of darkness. His simple prayer during the worst moments—"You're God, I'm not, please help"—offers immediate relief by acknowledging the divine relationship that sustains us.Our guest Michael Lichens, author and editor with a passion for overlooked aspects of Christian history, walks us through this harrowing yet ultimately redemptive story. The new Superman movie—directed by James Gunn—stormed into theaters and made headlines not just for its action, but for the moral questions it raises: innocence vs. aggression, humanity vs. power, and yes, immigration vs. xenophobia.

Wednesday Night Live 9 July 2025In this episode, we engage with listeners in an open-ended format, exploring diverse philosophical topics that reflect their perspectives. We start by addressing humorous misunderstandings surrounding my comments on monetary donations, leading to a broader discussion on value, wealth, and gratitude. As callers pose profound questions about the existence of God and the nature of truth, we examine the role of logic in determining reality and delve into metaphysics and epistemology. We also tackle moral philosophy, contrasting consequentialism with universally preferable behavior, while discussing how personal beliefs shape perceptions of morality. Throughout the episode, we highlight the importance of empathy and the personal histories that inform philosophical stances, reinforcing that philosophy is a practical tool for addressing existential challenges. We conclude by emphasizing community engagement and the value of continued dialogue on these complex issues.FOLLOW ME ON X! https://x.com/StefanMolyneuxGET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND THE FULL AUDIOBOOK!https://peacefulparenting.com/Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!Subscribers get 12 HOURS on the "Truth About the French Revolution," multiple interactive multi-lingual philosophy AIs trained on thousands of hours of my material - as well as AIs for Real-Time Relationships, Bitcoin, Peaceful Parenting, and Call-In Shows! You also receive private livestreams, HUNDREDS of exclusive premium shows, early release podcasts, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2025
Today we discuss sex and vaccines, reality and renegades. First: men can no longer compete in women's sports—from Trump's Executive Order, to the NCAA's response, to William “Lia” Thomas having his records rescinded at Penn, reality is prevailing. Other evidence includes the UK Supreme Court declaring that “man” and “woman” refer to biological reality; and the U.S. Supreme Court writing an opinion that forcing LGBTQ+ books on children in public elementary schools is unconstitutional. Men cannot magically turn into women, nor boys into girls, no matter what they believe or are told. Then: from the ACIP (Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices) to Vinay Prasad's latest presentation at the FDA: the federal government is being populated by a combination of true renegades and middle ground scramblers who are dressed like renegades. A good toolkit for understanding how to make sense of the claims being made is necessary, and we all should be rooting for the renegades to win.*****Our sponsors:CrowdHealth: Pay for healthcare with crowdfunding instead of insurance. Sent us text! We would love to hear from you! The future is not guaranteed. It is always good to have a plan for tomorrow, but it's worth taking time to enjoy your life in the present. Musical influences come and go, but the recent loss of one of the greatest American musical innovators of all time, Sylvester Stone, who led the group known as Sly to & The Family Stone has left the music world stunned. Featuring one of the first high profile bands, integrated in terms of race and gender, the group made a permanent imprint on the consciousness of young people as well as musical performers of their generation. In addition, the recent loss of another staple of American culture of the 1960's and 70's, Brian Wilson of the musical group The Beach Boys shortly thereafter, brought into focus the negative effects that drug use can have on the human life. Artificial Intelligence, AI has become an integral part of daily life as a primary method of retrieval of information of all types. One of the drawbacks of this labor-saving technology is the tendency of students at all levels to allow the system complete certain school assignments, perhaps making written essays a thing of the past. The quick answer is to substitute written assignments with oral reports or examinations. The trend is most pronounced with college students in the humanities, but its improving technology may pose a similar problem in technical disciplines as well in the future. Most people are aware that smoking is detrimental to human health. The trend towards smoke-free zones is expanding well outside of the United States and into other nations by government decree, to improve the health of their populations, particularly among teenagers. At one time there were ads in magazines and on television with people posing as medical doctors who actually advertised and promoted smoking for the general population. Meet a wingman who developed his own program to eliminate the loss of life by drowning, by starting his own swimming program that has taught over ten thousand people how to swim with confidence and safety.

Fr. Mike uses King Saul as an example that God does not unchoose those he has chosen, and never loses faith in us. Even if we feel someone is in power unjustly, it's God who decides who holds power, not us. Today's readings are 1 Samuel 24 and Psalm 57. The death of a neighborhood friend, an attempted robbery that almost went horribly wrong, good vs. evil, and the road not taken: this is the Al Pacino origin story. It all culminates in the role of a lifetime. Not Michael Corleone. Not a role on stage or screen. The most important role of Al Pacino's young life played out in front of a couple of detectives and a district attorney.
