The dayof the birth of Jesus Christ is very near. The most appropriate preparation forus is preparation for this birth. Our reflections over the past days haveprepared us for this very moment. Today we reflect on the birth of John theBaptist, who prepares the way for a birth far greater than his own. The twoinfants had already met in their mothers' wombs when the Virgin Mary visitedElizabeth. This meeting can be seen as a sign: John was born first to announceto the world that the birth of the Messiah would soon follow. Sacred Scripturetells us clearly that their births happened one after the other. The birth ofJohn the Baptist fulfills the prophecy of Scripture and God's plan. Todaywe're looking at the last two verses in Ephesians chapter 3. Along withPhilippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”, theseare two of the most quoted verses in the Bible that we hear when people finishtheir prayer. “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above allthat we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be gloryin the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen”. Whata powerful ending to this chapter!Paulseems to want to use every word possible to convey to us the vastness of God'spower as found in Jesus Christ. He has ended each of the two previous chapterswith praise to God for His great victory in Christ. He tells us that Christ'spower is so great He arose from the dead and ascended far above all (1:19-23).He teaches us that His power is so great He has reconciled Jews and Gentiles toeach other, and to God; and that He is now building a temple to the eternalglory of God (2:19-22). But in the paragraph before us, Paul shares theexciting truth that this, far “above all power”, is available to us! Itis even "above all that we ask or think." In other words, thepower of Christ, like the love of Christ, is beyond human understanding ormeasurement. And this is just the kind of power you and I need if we are towalk and war in victory. Theword "power" is again dunamis, which we met back in Ephesians 3:7;and "working" is energeia (energy) found in Ephesians 1:11, 19; 2:2;3:7; and 4:16. Some power is dormant; it is available, but not being used, suchas the power stored in a battery. But God's energy is effectual power—power atwork in our lives. This power works in us, in the inner man (Ephesians 3:16). RememberPhilippians 2:13, “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to doof his good pleasure”. We can't even begin to imagine what it means that theeternal, creator God of the universe, through His Holy Spirit, is working inus!!!!! I'llnever forget I had a car for years that when it got cold below 30° the crazycar wouldn't start. Somehow or another, a disconnection took place between thebattery and the starter as I tried to start the car. I'm telling you, myfriend, in Christ Jesus, all the resurrection power of the Lord Jesus Christ, allthe power of the Holy Spirit that dwells in us, all the power that God wants usto have to live and do what He wants us to do, to be what He wants us to be, toaccomplish what He wants us to accomplish, is available in us. Ifwe could only understand and believe this and comprehend this! But our lack of experiencingthis power being released in our lives is because a disconnection has takenplace. Maybe, like my car, we get cold in our Christian experience. We're notreading our Bible. We're not praying as we should. We've lost fellowship withthe Lord. We've allowed some sin or corruption to get in our lives and heartslike the corrosion on the battery cables. I'm telling you my friend, when thattakes place we lose that connection. The power is still there, but we have lostthe connection because of unbelief, unconfessed sin, careless living and becauseof lack of love or grace that we need in our lives. Myfriend, oh my friend, today realize the available power, the resurrectionpower, the power that raised Jesus from the dead. God Himself is at work in usif we'd only allow Him to flow through us for His glory. Note in verse 20 “ToHim be glory in the church by Christ Jesus”. This power is not given to usso we can build bigger churches, live better lives, or even to do a greater workfor Christ. No, it's all to the glory of Jesus Christ. That power is available butwhen we want to use it selfishly, God doesn't give it to us. He doesn't releaseit within us. But when we live for the glory of God, oh, awesome and wonderfuland powerful things take place for His kingdom's sake.

Todaywe're continuing to look at the prayer, the petition, that the Apostle Paulprayed for the saints there at the church of Ephesus. The first thing he prayedfor in verse 16 is that they would “be strengthened with might through HisSpirit in the inner man”. They'd have spiritual energy to live for the LordJesus Christ and to do the will of God. Secondly, Paul prayed, “that Christmay dwell in your hearts through faith that you being rooted and groundedin love”. So, the second thing now Paul is praying for is the depth oftheir spiritual experience in Christ. How deep is your spiritual life? Youknow, so many Christians are like a mile wide and an inch deep. They display alot of Christianity until they end up in a different situation, a crisis, thenit's revealed they have no depth to their Christian life. That's what Paul ispraying for, that there would be depth in their spiritual walk with God. Heuses three words in verse 17 to speak of this depth. The first word is “dwell”.Then the second is “rooted”. The third word is “grounded”.  Theword “dwell” is a word that speaks of Christ being at home in our hearts. WhatPaul is praying for is a deeper experience between Christ and His people. Heyearns for Christ to settle down and feel at home in their hearts—not a surfacerelationship, but an ever-deepening fellowship. Not only are we at home inChrist, He's at home in our hearts. Abraham is a good illustration of this.When God and the two angels came to see Abraham after He has promised him ason, God felt at home with Abraham. He sat down to have a meal with him. Heconversed with him. He talked with him. But then, God had another thing on Hisagenda, that was the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. He didn't go to Lot'shouse. He sent the two angels because He didn't feel at home in Lot's heart.So, my friend, to dwell in our hearts means Christ is at home. He has a placewhere He can commune and fellowship with us. Jesus is always a welcome guest. Now,already we are saints. That's what Paul addressed these Christians at Ephesuswith in the very first verse of the book: “To the saints at Ephesus”. So,they're saints already. They are already in Christ. Christ is already in them.But the question is, does Christ dwell in your hearts? Is He abiding in yourheart? (John 15:7-8).  Thesecond word that we see here is the word “rooted”. The verb rootedmoves us into the plant world. The tree must get its roots deep into the soilif it is to have both nourishment and stability; and the Christian must havehis spiritual roots deep into the love of God. Psalm 1:2-3 is a perfectdescription of this word. Jeremiah 17:5-8 is agood commentary on it. One of the most important questions a Christian can askhimself is, "From what do I draw my nourishment and my stability?" Ifthere is to be power in the Christian life, then there must be depth. The rootsmust go deeper and deeper into the love of Christ. Thirdly,we see the word “grounded”. Grounded is an architectural term; it refersto the foundations on which we build. There's only one foundation that can bein our lives and that's the foundation of Jesus Christ. We know that theexperiences of life, the trials of life will expose if we're building on thefirm foundation of Jesus Christ. Which means we have depth. Jesus said it thisway in Luke 6:47-48, He is like a man building a house, whodug deep and laid the foundation on the rock.  We'redwelling in Christ. Christ is dwelling in us. We have deep roots into thefoundation, Christ Himself. “Christ is our life” (Colossians 3:4). “Forto me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21).  That is then the story of our life. It's aChrist-like life. It's exchanged life, as Hudson Taylor put it.  Myfriend, that's what we need to have. That's why Paul prayed for the depth, thedepth of our love in Christ. We should pray for that not only for ourselves,but for others.  Godbless!

Because God has established Christ as King and has given all the nations to Him. God is not moved by their uproar, and neither should we be as believers in Christ. He is our refuge, He is our focus, and His unshakable Kingdom is the reality of our lives right now.   Show Notes: We read in Psalm 2 that the nations are in an uproar, and today we see how true that is. It is difficult to find a nation where positive things are happening. Every nation is facing negative consequences as people devise a vain thing. Like no other time in history, whole populations all over the globe are embracing vain and ridiculous ideas to believe in. Meanwhile, governments and rulers take their stand against the Lord, His will, His Kingdom, and His people. They counsel together against Israel and against Judaism and Christianity everywhere.   It seems like the world is spinning out of control. And as much as we pray for things to change, they just seem to go from bad to worse. That should come as no surprise to us as Christians. The Scriptures make clear that things will be difficult in the days before the Kingdom of God is established. And we are to be focused as believers on His Kingdom coming. So do not be focused on whatever is happening in the world. Instead, keep looking to the Father, to Christ, and to His Kingdom, knowing that God is in charge.   How is God responding to all the ridiculous ways the nations are acting in their defiance of Him? According to Psalm 2 He is laughing. In other words, He is not bothered. He is not losing control. He is not moved off His throne. God is securely planted as the One who is in charge. And He has installed His King on Zion, His holy mountain. That is where we stand in Christ. We can live today in His Kingdom, taking refuge in Him, seated with Him in the heavenly places, and proclaiming that He is ruling over every situation.   Key Verses:   •       Psalm 2:1–5. But they are in an uproar because the Father has granted the ownership of those nations to Christ. 2.    God is not shaken, and Christ the King is not shaken by whatever is going on in this world. He is laughing at the plans of the world because they are already thwarted by His Word as the God of all creation. 3.    We tell of the decree of the Lord that He is the King. We take refuge in Him personally. And we are those who proclaim that the nations are His, and He has installed His King upon His Holy Mountain.

Today we're continuing to look at the Apostle Paul's prayerfor the church, the believers in the church in Ephesus. In this prayer, we findseveral things that Paul prayed for. The first thing we see is that He prayedthat the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you thespirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. He prayed that theywould know God.  Thenwe find in verse 18, Paul also prayed, “the eyes of your understanding beingenlightened”. The eyes of your heart, your emotions, your thoughts, yoursoul, your will, in a sense everything about you, would be enlightened, wouldbe open, would have an understanding and know what is the hope of His calling. So,the second thing that Paul is praying for is that we might know God's callingon our lives. This word “called” is an important word in the Christianvocabulary. The Scripture teaches us that the church, the body of Christ, thebelievers, in the Greek is the “ecclesia”. That word is two words which togethermeans the “called-out assembly”.  Thebelievers who are the church, the body of Christ are called out. Now,interesting. We're not just called out of the world, we are called intosomething that is glorious. And that's what Paul's speaking of here. Not onlyare you called out of the world, but you are called out to be a peculiar, aroyal priesthood, a different person from the rest of the world around you. Petersays it this way in 1 Peter 2:9. “But you are a chosen generation, a royalpriesthood, a holy nation, a special people that you may proclaim the praisesof Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” Paultold Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:9 that He had a holy calling. Yes, we've beencalled out of darkness into marvelous light and we've also been called toglory. I love this verse in 1 Peter 5:10. “But may the God of all grace whocalled us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus after you suffered a whileperfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. To Him be glory and thedominion forever and ever. Amen.” We have been called to glory!  And because of this calling, we can now have ahope that's steadfast and sure, an anchor of our souls (Hebrews 6:19). Theword hope doesn't mean wishful thinking about something. But the word hope inthe scripture means we have a delightful future in Jesus Christ. We have theassurance of that future because of what Jesus Christ did for us on the crossand His resurrection. The believer's hope is tied into the return of JesusChrist as we read in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and 1 John 3:1-3. Our hope isbased on the fact that Jesus promised that one day He will come again for Hisbride the Church.  Beforewe were saved, we were without hope in this world. But now in Christ, accordingto 1 Peter 1:3, we have a living hope. “Blessed be the God and Father of ourLord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again toa living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead”. Howglorious is that? So, we have a hope that's steadfast and sure. It's a livinghope which means it gives us purpose and direction, and encouragement forwhatever we face every day. We have a better tomorrow coming. Oh, that is thehope that we have.  Paulprayed that you would know your calling from God. And this calling from Godgives you hope. I trust you'll take these words into your heart and you'llremember you have something to live for and something to look forward to. Agood verse to close with today is Romans 15:13: “Now may the God of hopefill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope bythe power of the Holy Spirit.”  KnowingGod, you have hope. No God, there is no hope.  Godbless!

Remember,the theme of Ephesians is about the riches that we have in Christ Jesus. We arein Christ the moment we trust Him to be our Lord and Savior. The Holy Spiritbaptizes us into the body of Christ (Romans 6:3). In the first long sentence,verse 2-6, we have seen how God the Father has given us at least threewonderful rich blessings. The first blessing was we are “chosen”. We are“chosen… to be holy and without blame before Him in love” (v. 4). Secondly,we are “adopted” into His family as His children (v. 5). We appreciatethe fact that we can go to Him as our Father in heaven.  Next,we are blessed with being “accepted in the beloved” (v. 6). No matterwhat happens in our life, or what goes on around us, God has accepted us notbecause of our goodness, our good deeds, or our perfection. No. He's acceptedus in Christ Jesus forever. And we have an advocate in heaven, Jesus Christ therighteous, who is always there interceding on our behalf. We are accepted, myfriend. What great blessings from God the Father.  Now,in verses 7-12, we see where we have blessings from God the Son. Now, we mustalso remember that each Person of the Godhead does not work independently ofthe other. No, my friend, they all work together to make possible everythingthat pertains to our salvation. But each Person of the Trinity, God the Father,God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, are still one. And each person has a specialministry to perform and a special deposit to make into our lives. Through theministry and finished work of Jesus the Son we are blessed with being redeemed. Theword redeem basically means to “purchase to set free by paying the price”.During the time of Christ and the apostles there were 60 million slaves in theRoman Empire and they were bought and sold like pieces of furniture. But a man couldpurchase a slave and set him free. And this is what Jesus did for us. In theNew Testament there are three words that are in the Greek that highlight thedifferent aspects of this redemption.  Thefirst Greek word is agorazō which means “to buy” or “to purchase” andespecially typically in a marketplace setting. It describes the aspect ofredemption as the initial acquisition of buying of humanity from the slavemarket of sin where Christ pays the price by His blood to claim believers asHis own (1 Corinthians 6:19-20; Revelation 5:9). Colossians 1:13-14 also tellsus: “He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into thekingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood,the forgiveness of sins.” Thenext Greek word is exagorazō, a compound form meaning “to buy out of” or “toredeem from”. This emphasizes the aspect of permanently removing the purchasedindividual from the market or the bondage of sin. The individual is no longersubject to resale or the curse of the law, delivering them from ongoingenslavement to sin.  Thenthe last Greek word is lutroō, which means “to ransom”, “to loose” or “to setfree” because the ransom price has been paid. And it focuses on the aspect ofcomplete liberation, emancipation from captivity, your release from the powerand the guilt and the shame of sin. You are set free.  Thatis what it means when it says in the scripture, we are redeemed by His blood. “InHim we have redemption through His blood”. Redemption is only possible throughHis blood. Jesus paid the price. He satisfied God's wrath for sin. Now myfriend, we are set free to love Him, to live for Him, to be free to serve Him,to serve others, to love God, and to love others like we should.  Ilove the old hymn by Fanny Crosby: “Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it! Redeemedby the blood of the Lamb! Redeemed through His infinite mercy—His child, andforever, I am.” Whata wonderful, wonderful blessing we have from Jesus Christ.
