Ever heard the phrase, “Thoughts and Prayers?” Do you cringe at the sound of it? I am almost certain this expression began from a sincere place of sympathy.  But overtime, it has become a trite, empty, and meaningless cliché. Why? Because it has become a substitute for responsibility.  Today, we talk about prayer not as a substitute for responsibility, but an invitation into responsibility.  Our friend Shane Claiborne sums it up best, “If we ask God to move a mountain, God often gives us a shovel.”  

Thoughts and prayers have to go out once again for people that have been effected by gun violence.. Breaking news out of Nevada as there was yet another, active shooter in this country...

Welcome to Episode 49 of The Be Yo'self Podcast. This week we talk about yet another tragedy that happened. An Elementary school shooting took place on Tuesday, May 24th, 2022 in UVALDE, TX an 18 year old reportedly took 18 lives. When I heard the terrible news, I was deeply saddened and speechless. I had no words of my own, so I opened social media to see what others had to say. All I could see was “My Thoughts & Prayers are with the families involved.” Yes, Thoughts & Prayers are great, but the reality is those kids aren't going home to their parents. We need an actual plan to stop evil crimes like this from happening in the United States Of America. In the words of Emmanuel Acho,“Thoughts & Prayers” are meaningful, but remember faith without works is dead.

As a former teacher and a mom, I have a recurring nightmare that I'm sure many of you share: a constant, ever-present fear of my children — and any other children — being exposed to or a victim in a school shooting.   It's an ever-present fear because it's an ever-present reality.    And this ever-present reality isn't only happening with school shootings but with gun violence at churches, in grocery stores — in places someone should never have to fear for their life.   We need more than moments of silence and trite words of condolence — we must speak up for real change. We need to feel more than outrage — we must take action. We need to do more than mourn the loss of life — we must fight to preserve life.    In this episode, we will talk about:   How gun safety saves lives. Where you can go to stay up-to-date on current gun safety legislation. Many of us probably think of prayer as a way to ask God for something. Maybe for him to fix a problem you are going through. Or maybe it's for something good to happen that you are expecting. Or maybe it's to do well on your math test coming up. For many of us, prayer is a one way street...just us talking to God. But what if we saw prayer in a different way? What if we saw prayer as more than just one way? There are many ways that we can pray, but what's most important is for us to be real, be honest, and to be consistent. When we practice prayer, we learn to find the way that we connect with God the most.

When we're praying in church, sometimes we get the idea that we have to use fancy words, formal words or even fake words to sound more spiritual to God. Maybe even if we pray the right way, then we'll get what we want. But the point of prayer is not what you say to God, but rather about being near and close to God. The way we get close to God is similar to how we get close to friends...we have real and honest conversations. God can handle our thoughts and the things we say to Him in prayer and He wants that honesty to grow a close relationship with you.
