Rabbi Sherre Hirsch has always been eager to push boundaries. As a woman, getting the gig as Rabbi at one of Los Angeles' biggest Conservative synagogues was not guaranteed. When she got there, the podium she was meant to stand behind was not built for her… figuratively and literally. At 5'2, she had to stand on a box to see over top.She was never going to acquiesce to what a Rabbi “should” look like. She likes yoga, surfing, the outdoors. She shuns pantyhose. And most importantly, she believes in all people finding their own connection with religion and spirituality. Many parts of today's episode may surprise you – Including the Rabbi's admission that even her faith is shakable – and what we all can do to stay aligned with our highest sense of spirit and walk through life a little bit lighter.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
I love that old song by Player: “Baby Come Back” — especially when the singer says: “I was wrong…” It is not that easy to say. But, we do. Because we must. In late July, the Sunday New York Times devoted an entire section to that topic – “I Was Wrong.” The editors of the New York Times invited a cadre of their op-ed writers – among them, as pictured above, Farhad Manjoo, Paul Krugman, Bret Stephens, and Gail Collins – to describe how they had been wrong about what they had once thought, and about what they had once written. It was dazzling — an evocation of one of the themes of the High Holy Day season. “I was wrong.” I asked several of my friends and colleagues — all of them, veteran thought leaders in the American Jewish community — to describe those moments in their careers when they were wrong, didn't get it, or didn't see something coming. My guests: Rabbi Dan Freelander, one of the senior leaders of the Reform movement – who has held many positions within the Reform Jewish world, and is retired from his position as president of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, and is a popular singer of Jewish music, with Kol B'Seder. Rabbi Laura Geller, one of the first woman rabbis in North America; former Hillel director, director of Los Angeles office of the American Jewish Congress, and rabbi emerita of Temple Emanuel in Beverly Hills. She, along with her late husband Richard Siegel, is the author of Getting Good at Getting Older. Rabbi Sherre Hirsch, a rabbi and author who currently serves as the Chief Innovation Officer for American Jewish University. Rabbi Karyn Kedar, rabbi emerita of Congregation B'nai Joshua Beth Elohim in Deerfield, Illinois, and author

We all have major life transitions, which come in many different forms. But these difficult times can be thresholds to a new adventure. How do we take the challenge to turn what appears to be a block or even a death, into a threshold? Rabbi Sherre Hirsch has come today to talk to us about her 2nd book, Thresholds: How to Thrive Through Life's Transitions. Rabbi Hirsch is the first female Rabbi, who served for 8 years as the Rabbi of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles. She has since left the more traditional pulpit to serve a larger, more diverse “congregation.” She is now a nationally recognized personality who speaks across the country and frequently appears in the national media. She also serves as Spiritual Consultant to Canyon Ranch properties. Rabbi Sherre blends ancient tradition and modern day application to empower individuals to be their own spiritual guides. You are not going to want to miss this show.
"Innovation to me is... seeing beyond possibility." Rabbi Sherre Hirsch is far from from your average Rabbi. She has broken through several glass ceilings in her career (she even heeds the warning of looking out for the broken glass in doing so) and has carved out very non-traditional paths both on- and off the pulpit. As a counselor of individuals, teams, and corporations, Sherre teaches people how to get to and operate from the core of their values and beliefs. Always a few steps ahead, she also helps her clients get out of their own way and push beyond their visions of possibility - into that place where innovation truly happens. Her latest book, Thresholds, is a well-crafted examination of the transitional phase between our old operating methods and entering into a new way of doing things. On Innovation Crush, the Rabbi discusses everything from her love of video games to pushing through her own depression, to authoring books, and how innovation internally leads to innovation externally. www.sherrehirsch.com/
