I interview Jared Ayers, head pastor at First Presbyterian Church in North Palm Beach, and author of You Can Trust a God with Scars: Faith (and Doubt) for the Searching Soul. We discuss the profound impact of shared meals, the significance of the incarnation in understanding human suffering, and the importance of honesty within Christian communities. We explore themes of hope, the illusion of control, the reality of sin, and the necessity of dignity in relationships. Ayers also emphasizes the need for vulnerability and authenticity in faith, encouraging listeners to embrace their struggles and foster inclusive communities. Takeaways Meals are a reflection of our shared stories. The incarnation shows God's deep understanding of human suffering. Hope comes from knowing we are not alone in our pain. Navigating loss requires community support and understanding. We often live under the illusion of control in our lives. Christianity addresses the reality of sin and human condition. Honesty about our struggles fosters a healthier community. Dignifying others is essential for building inclusive spaces. Wrestling with faith and doubt is a normal part of life. The conversation takes on new depth as Kenyon discusses watching his son, Kenyon Martin Jr., carve out his own NBA journey. He speaks candidly about fatherhood, pride, restraint, and the responsibility of letting your child become their own person while still standing firm in loyalty and protection as a parent. Beyond the game, Kenyon shares lessons on accountability, family-first values, standing on principle, and how growth sometimes requires rewriting narratives—both public and personal. Juggling a demanding career and the unique challenges of adult ADHD can be tough enough. But what happens when you add significant life commitments, like caregiving, into the mix? In this episode of Overcoming Distractions, Dave welcomes Lisa Candera, a mom, attorney, ADHD-er, and autism mom coach. They dive deep into the real-world strategies for managing a full, complex life while respecting and even leveraging your ADHD wiring. Lisa shares her personal journey of late-in-life ADHD diagnosis and the radical compassion it unlocked. This episode is packed with essential insights on managing burnout, mastering self-regulation, and finding grace amidst the chaos. For Busy Professionals with ADHD: Customized Support is Key: For adults with demanding careers, support (from a coach or mentor) should meet you where you are! There is no one-size-fits-all "playbook" for ADHD. Embrace Individual Needs: Recognize and respect your unique sensory environment. Some thrive in dead silence (like David), while others need background stimulation (like Lisa, who studied for the bar in coffee shops). Unexpected Coping Tools: Simple items can be life-savers. Lisa's AirPods/earphones help with focus, enjoyment (listening to true crime), and self-regulating her sound sensitivity and quick startle response. The Adult ADHD "Click": Many adults with ADHD are diagnosed later in life, often after a child's diagnosis. What seemed like stress, anxiety, or emotional dysregulation often turns out to be a manifestation of their neurotype. The Caregiving Challenge: When you have caregiving or high-level family responsibilities, you often experience a next level of exhaustion. Bringing home complexities into the workplace is a reality that contributes to burnout. Practice Radical Compassion: Apply the same love, grace, and understanding you afford a struggling child or friend to yourself. This helps reframe struggles that you previously saw as character flaws as part of your wiring. Find Lisa Candera on her Website: theautismmomcoach.com **Do you want to work with Dave one-on-one? When someone we love dies by suicide, we often unconsciously believe that staying broken honors them—that abandoning our joy, our hobbies, our future is some kind of loyalty. But here's the hard truth: that's not honoring them. That's joining them in death. In this raw and unflinching episode, therapist and suicide loss survivor Alison Lager pulls back the curtain on the invisible second death—the one that happens to survivors. Drawing from her own devastating experience losing her husband to suicide, neuroscience, spiritual wisdom, and years of clinical practice, Alison shares the actionable blueprint she used to refuse suicide a second victim. You'll discover:Why "secondary loss" happens—and how your abandoned dreams become collateral damage to griefThe dangerous comfort of the "victim" identity—and why you have to eventually let it go to surviveThe "boardwalk principle": How to reclaim the places and activities you loved without betraying your loved oneWhy staying in grief is a form of spiritual death—and how to recognize when you're joining the same darkness that took themThe science of "gaining more than you lost"—the neuroscience behind why this actually worksHow to ride waves of grief instead of drowning in one long emotional responseThe "heavier weights" metaphor: Why your pain can become your greatest strengthPractical strategies for processing rage, anger, and the emotions grief tries to hideWhy living fully is the ultimate honor to those we've lost—not a betrayalThis episode is for anyone grieving the loss of a loved one to suicide, anyone supporting a widow or survivor, and anyone who's ever wondered if there's a way out of the darkness. “Growing up with a disability was hard. When you're a kid, all the other kids want to know what's wrong, why you walk like that, and why you do certain things,” Jenna said. Jenna is a 28-year-old disabled woman living in Reno, Nevada. She's been navigating her disability her entire life. When Jenna was an infant, she suffered a stroke, which resulted in severe deficiencies on the left side of her body. Jenna's left hand often takes a hooked position due to the lack of strength in her wrist, and her left foot turns outwards, making it difficult to walk. But Jenna is not alone; more than 1 in 4 adults live with some type of disability in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC. “I didn't start walking when everyone else my age did. I would walk on my tippy toes, I wore casts, and I would fall over places. I couldn't be alone.” she said. Jenna has come a long way since then. In early October Jenna got engaged to her fiancé, Jon. Now the couple lives together in a small townhouse in South Reno, along with Jon's 6-year-old daughter. Jenna plays an active role in Jon's daughter's life, often being the main caretaker of her while Jon is working. Audio minidoc by Sara Ewing-Garcia.

Today, Ben sits down with fellow Catholic financial planners Nick Orenduff and Charlie Horonzy for a rich roundtable on what it truly means to live a generous, ordered, and faith-centered life. Together, they wrestle with the tension between self-giving and self-preservation—how to pour ourselves out for God, family, and community without crossing into burnout or misplaced busyness. Nick reflects on the daily discipline of keeping God first, family second, and career third, while Charlie shares how prayer, discernment, and spirituality help him know when to say yes or no to new commitments. The trio also explore how seasons of life shape our ability to serve, how financial boundaries mirror spiritual ones, and why surrendering control is often the most faithful form of stewardship. Woven through their conversation is a deep trust that God's providence can transform even our limitations into grace. By the end, Ben, Nick, and Charlie invite listeners to view their time, money, and energy not as burdens to manage, but as sacred resources to be aligned with God's will—one prayerful decision at a time.Key Takeaways:• A well-ordered life begins by placing God first, family second, and career third—a framework that helps align all other decisions.• True generosity doesn't mean saying yes to everything; it means discerning where God is actually calling you to give.• The way we serve changes as our responsibilities shift—young parents, for example, are called to focus more deeply on family.• Offering our struggles and discomfort to God transforms them into acts of love and participation in His plan.• Recognizing life's brevity encourages intentionality about how we spend our weeks and years.• Our careers, finances, and families are not possessions to control but gifts to steward in loving obedience.Key Timestamps:(01:55) – Balancing Work and Life(07:53) – Trusting God and Letting Go(10:03) – Family Dynamics and Communication(17:42) – Seasons of Life and Service(20:24) – Balancing Volunteering and Personal Boundaries(23:47) –  Navigating Life's Noise and Staying Focused on God(31:46) – The Value of Time and Living IntentionallyMentions:Website: https://www.focusedupfinancial.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/charlie-horonzy-cfp%C2%AE-cpa-8802b910/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FocusedUpFinancial# Website: https://www.planmember.com/advisor/?bk=NOrenduff LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicholas-ross-orenduff-cfp%C2%AE-a45a7524b/ Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals by Oliver BurkemanThe Practice of the Presence of God by Brother LawrenceMore of Catholic Money Mastermind:Catholic Money Mastermind Podcast is a personal podcast meant for educational and entertainment. I get asked all the time how to keep sex and intimacy alive after having a baby, so in this episode I'm breaking down what really happens during this huge transition. Last week we talked about sex during pregnancy, and today we're looking at what comes next, because bringing home a baby reshapes your relationship in ways you can't always prepare for. Whether you're expecting your first or remembering those early days, I want you to feel seen, supported, and reminded that nothing is "wrong" with you if things feel off. I'll walk you through what the research shows about why so many couples struggle, and the practical habits that help the strongest partnerships find their way back to connection. My goal is to help you understand what's normal, what's fixable, and how you can rebuild intimacy with compassion - for yourself and for each other. Book mentioned: And Baby Makes Three
