This week, I'm speaking with Andy Mumma. Growing up, Andy never intended to be a small business owner, but the entrepreneurial seed was planted early and when combined with a love of cafe culture and a dash of punk rock, the result has been a series of wildly successful businesses in his adopted hometown of Nashville and beyond.Andy's passion for music began while washing milk trucks as a teenager and quickly evolved into touring with bands while he was still in high school. Broke and in need of a change of scenery, Andy made his way to the Music City, where he landed a job as a dishwasher, and through hard work eventually became a barista. His creative instincts ever present, Andy began meticulously planning his own coffee shop and 15 years later, when the opportunity presented itself, willed it into existence. The first Barista Parlor was a labor of love taking almost a year to complete construction, as well as helping to heal a family rift that had lasted nearly a decade. 8 locations later, a tiki bar, a taco truck, and a pizza bar, Andy's talent for creating spaces and passion for collaboration is undeniable. During the course of our conversation we discuss the Mennonite influence on his projects, dubbing punk rock from the radio, and learning to let go of where you think you should be and allowing the creative process to take you down roads you never could have imagined. It is my pleasure to present Andy Mumma on The Days Between..

This week, I'm speaking with Nic Harcourt. When it comes to DJs, few, if any, have had more of an impact on popular culture than Nic. The confluence of his taste, audience, and the gift of timing have enabled him to soundtrack film, television, commercials and beyond. As host of some of the world's most influential radio programs, listeners have been treated to a daily playlist of Nic's favorite songs for more than 30 years. With a personal history as eclectic as his musical palate, and an appreciation having evolved into playing, music has been a constant during what has at times been a very chaotic existence. Nic's career has spanned the globe, but it was Los Angeles where he would ultimately settle, participating in nearly every facet of the music business in a hustle to make ends meet. During the course of our conversation we discuss his struggles with alcoholism, spinning records with Michael Cain, and why success has no longer has anything to do with what he does for a living. It is my pleasure to present the man who introduced me to Interpol, Nic Harcourt on The Days Between..

This week I'm speaking with Jennie Garth. With an acting career that has spanned over 30 years, Jennie has plenty of experience becoming someone else. As a young girl, a family trauma ripped her from the country roads of Illinois and transplanted her to the desert of Arizona, where she struggled to find her footing. It was a love of dance and a twist of fate that would serve as her reprieve as well as help to lay the foundation of a friendship which has lasted to this day.Shortly after arriving in Los Angeles, Jennie found herself thrown into the center of a pop culture juggernaut, forcing her to sharpen her survival skills and establish relationships to help navigate the wind spell of fame. She would go on to appear in and produce dozens of productions, and after nearly two decades on television, Jennie chose to take a step back from the spotlight only to have her private struggles play out to a public audience. After a lifetime of looking to others to provide her with a sense of stability, through therapy, Jennie grew stronger and learned to become her own rock as she embraced life in the role she was born to play, herself. During the course of our conversation, we discuss the moniker ‘Puddles', being hypnotized for live television, and learning to date in her forties. Please enjoy Jennie Garth on The Days Between..

This week I'm speaking with Olivia Hill. As Tennessee's first openly transgender elected official, Olivia ran her campaign focused on being the most qualified person to sit at the table. A native of Nashville with over three decades of engineering experience, Olivia's priority is helping to keep her hometown's underground infrastructure on pace with its above ground development.Raised by her mother to never give up, Olivia began the journey towards becoming herself at a young age. Having to reconcile an environment which told she should be one way, while internally feeling another, she spent her adolescence in constant turmoil and turned to the Navy in hopes of finding a solution. After nearly a decade, Olivia left a combat veteran with a myriad of skills, including how hide the parts of herself she needed to keep secret in order to remain safe.Upon returning to Nashville, Olivia began her 25-year career with Vanderbilt University where she would ultimately transition and in the process receive what she calls a huge education. Olivia never set out to make history, but in a state intent on making life more difficult for its transgender community, her personal experience makes her the perfect person to do so, and those who supported her candidacy appear to agree. It is my pleasure to present Olivia Hill on The Days Between..

This week, I'm speaking with Mark Mahoney. As a tattooer, Mark needs no introduction. A pioneer of the single needle style, his work has inspired artists and set a standard for decades. An afternoon at the beach as a young boy set Mark on a path which has seen him bridge the gap between outsider and popular culture, helping to bring the art form into the mainstream. It was with the outlaw motorcycle clubs of Massachusetts where Mark would first practice his craft, saving members a trip to neighboring Rhode Island. After a short stint in art school, he found himself in New York City in the late 70's, expanding his body of work on a clientele that included some of the most notorious musicians in history. With tattooing illegal in Manhattan, Mark made his way to The Pike in Long Beach, California where he cut his teeth and was exposed to single needle tattoos, popular with Chicano artists, but shunned by the larger tattoo community.Mark would eventually land in Los Angeles, where he set up shop on The Sunset Strip, but the journey there wasn't without his fair share of tragedy. During the course of our conversation, we discuss kicking Charles Bukowski's ass, the East Coast/West Coast hip-hop rivalry of the 90's, and the Shamrock Social Club, his home for the last 22 years. The term legend gets thrown around a lot, but when it comes to Mark, it's difficult to think of a more accurate way to describe him, save only for the word humble. It is my privilege to present Mark Mahoney on The Days Between..

This week I'm speaking with Duane Sorenson. As a coffee roaster, Duane's passion forever changed the world of specialty coffee. Having grown up in a small town in western Washington, it was a love of music that first led him through the doors of a local coffee shop in the ninth grade. Encouraged by his father, Duane's ability to differentiate varietals began to emerge.By the time he left high school, Duane was a barista. Naturally competitive, he immersed himself in Seattle's coffee scene in the early 90's, working multiple jobs and refining his technique. When an opportunity to learn to roast coffee presented itself, Duane dove in headfirst and within a few months was roasting full time.It was a source trip to Panama and a desire to work directly with farmers that inspired what would become Stumptown Coffee and at the same time set into motion a movement known as the Third Wave. With his goals accomplished and his company having grown to meteoric heights, Duane sold Stumptown, a decision that was not without speculation or consequence. After opening a series of acclaimed restaurants in his beloved Portland, Duane is back on the roaster with his new venture, Puff Coffee. During the course of our conversation, we discuss his preference for hiring employees with passion over experience, taking care of people, and why success is a naughty word.It is my pleasure to present Duane Sorenson on The Days Between..

This week, I'm speaking with Wayne Kramer. When it comes to lives, Wayne has lived several. As the founder of seminal rock band MC5, he began his musical career at just 16 years old. By 1967, the MC5 were serving as the house band at the Grande Ballroom and Wayne was working full time. As racial tensions reached a fever pitch around the the country and in his hometown of Detroit, he crossed paths with poet and activist John Sinclair who shared his revolutionary fervor and would become a mentor throughout his life.Shortly after the MC5 imploded, Wayne found himself in federal prison, which he documents at length in his book, The Hard Stuff: Dope, Crime, the MC5, and My Life of Impossibilities. After serving 2 1/2 years of a 4 year sentence, Wayne headed to New York City where he remained for a decade, playing music, continuing to use drugs, and living what he describes as the same year, ten times. In the mid nineties, Wayne began a new life in Los Angeles, where he signed a recording contract and began touring only to see his efforts come crashing down as a result of what he calls, ‘an inside job'. Tired of carrying on the facade of sobriety, Wayne turned to Bob Timmons to help him take the steps toward a better life. Now 24 years sober, Wayne discusses how talent isn't enough, why he thinks NWA picked up where MC5 left off, and his work with the C.A.P.O. Center and the non-profit Jail Guitar Doors, named after The Clash song he helped inspire. Please enjoy Wayne Kramer on The Days Between..

An adolescence spent in the idyllic beach town of Encinitas, California offered Rebecca extraordinary exposure to mortality, which has served her throughout her life, both personally and professionally.Known for her unflinching honesty, Rebecca quickly amassed an audience with her blog, Girl's Gone Child. Through writing she was able to monetize her experience as a young mother, as well as emotionally connect with a community outside of her daily existence. As her family grew and her relationship faltered, Rebecca made plans to leave her marriage when tragedy struck. Again, she turned to the sanctuary of the page, producing her memoir All of This: A Memoir of Death and Desire, in which she documents navigating life as a widow and single mother of four at just 37 years old. From layered relationships, to societal expectations, to the nuance of carrying multiple emotions at once, Rebecca's ability to articulate the messiness that it is to be human is truly a gift. Shortly after walking out of an art class her sophomore year, Jeni set up shop at Columbus's North Market, where she would source the ingredients needed to make her signature creations, gaining an education in both flavor and business. While financially unsuccessful, her first foray into entreprenurialship provided her with experience and perspective, which set the foundation for the success which would follow, including a James Beard Award, a spot on The New York Times Best Sellers list, and more than 60 scoop shops across the United States. In the same year she was named one of Fast Company's Most Creative People In Business, the bottom dropped out, leaving Jeni faced with a crisis she thought would be the end of her company. Inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien and supported by the community she had nurtured since her days at the North Market, Jeni would weather the storm, and emerge having experienced a sense of love she says changed her view on ‘everything in the world'.During the course of our conversation, we discuss the fellowship model, B Corps, and how she encourages eating ice cream in winter. It is with a deep sense of hometown pride that I present Jeni Britton on The Days Between..

From music, to fashion, to finance his ability to successfully navigate the intersection of human beings and technology is second to none and it is executed with a humility that only the Midwest could produce. It was as a student at Indiana University where his passions for music and computers would collide, resulting in one of the first music streaming platforms, a feat of engineering that he would continue to refine for more than two decades, culminating in the launch of Apple Music in 2015. Seeking new challenges while catering to his preference for discomfort, Ian made his way to LVMH, where he was tasked with digitizing the world's largest luxury conglomerate. After working with names like Louis Vuitton, Celine, and Dior, Ian found himself immersed in cryptocurrency, NFT's, and digital security with French start up, Ledger. While Ian's timing has certainly contributed to his wins, it is his curiosity and belief in the mission at hand that has fueled much of his success, and even some of his failures. Without a wheel chair to aid her, Tatyana learned to walk using only her arms, and in doing so began building the physical strength and mental will power that would eventually lead to her becoming the fastest woman in the world. In 2004, Tatyana made her Paralympic debut in Athens as the youngest member of Team USA, where she took home the first two of her medals at just 15 years old. Accomplishments made all the more impressive having left his full time job as a line cook just a few years prior.Known for his aggressive and powerful style, Brian is a skater's skater and fan favorite having appeared in dozens of films and advertisements. His passion for getting tricks is undeniable, with a history of slams that defy logic, but command respect by those inside and outside of skateboarding. Motivated by a strong work ethic, Brian's willingness to continually push himself was at one time fueled by the anger and frustration at having to keep a deeply personal part of his life secret, for fear of how it may be received. After establishing himself as one of the greatest street skaters of all time, Brian made the choice to openly share a long hidden side of himself with the world, having no way to predict the sea change within skateboarding that would follow. Widely admired and respected by his peers for his accomplishments on his board, Brian's transparency and willingness to completely be himself off of his board may prove to be his lasting legacy. For a sport inclusive of differences and a shared ethos of progression, for many people, myself included, Brian Anderson is the embodiment of what it truly means to call oneself a ‘skater'.It is with great pride that I present Brian Anderson on The Days Between..

This week I'm speaking with Liz Lambert. If you've visited Austin's South Congress over the last twenty years, chances are you have Liz to thank, though you may not realize it. While the pandemic certainly escalated the migration to the Live Music Capital of the World, the trend began far earlier, and one could argue that a sea foam green motel was the spark that ignited a wildfire.Shortly after leaving the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and returning to her home state of Texas, Liz found herself standing in the parking lot of the Hotel San José with a bottle of champagne in one hand and the keys to front door in the other, with nothing more than instinct and her fundamental understanding of what Christopher Alexander called ‘the quality without a name' to guide her.A trained storyteller, not even Liz could have written the adventure that would follow, which culminated in her transforming over half a dozen properties throughout Texas and Mexico as well as establishing herself as one of the most influential hoteliers of our time, only to see her legacy taken from her in a twist even Liz admits she didn't see coming. It's easy to draw parallels between Liz's experience and that of the town she helped to make famous, but as with any hero's journey, the road back leads to resurrection, and it's safe to say both stories are far from over.Often imitated but never duplicated, please enjoy Liz Lambert on The Days Between..

Despite having achieved what many dream of early in his career, Ethan's private struggle with his weight, his relationship with food, and what he calls his ‘mental garbage' has at times dominated his personal narrative.A seemingly well meaning, but misplaced attempt to course correct at the young age of 5, set him on rollercoaster of weight loss and weight gain that not only took a physical toll, but a mental and emotional one as well. In 2017, a short, but impactful TED talk, while simple in message, radically changed Ethan's mindset and approach to food and nutrition. Armed with this practical information, and in combination with the same work ethic that he has applied professionally, Ethan has now reached a level of physical well-being that can only be described as inspiring. While his story is unique, the struggle for self-acceptance and the desire to change one's appearance is not. Everyday, people attempt to navigate the road to physical health, having to sidestep confusing and contradictory information, dead end diets, and miracle cures. Through the course of our conversation, we discuss the importance of small goals, killing your clone, and the affect that words, however well intentioned, can have on shaping a person's destiny. Everyone is different and every body is different, but as Ethan has shown, through daily practice we all have the ability to transform ourselves, and the long term positive effect of that transformation, can be profound. Please enjoy Ethan Suplee on The Days Between..

From hip hop to rock-n-roll and from the stage to the big screen, Lysa Cooper knows everyone, and she's not afraid to tell you.Having left home as a teenager with a work ethic far beyond her years, she navigated the nightlife of 1980's New York City creating a name for herself as well known as the clubs and restaurants in which she worked. Photographer Ellen Von Unwerth recognized and encouraged Lysa's aesthetic talents early on, setting the stage for a life and career that can only be described as legendary. While the mark she has left on fashion and entertainment is undeniable, it's Lysa's natural ability to cut through the noise and fondness for connection, that has allowed her to create a global community of people from every walk of life, which she describes as her true abundance, and is seemingly a nod to her Quaker upbringing. As she embraces the latest chapter of her story as a medicinal healer, we discuss the importance of not being attached to one identity of yourself, the changing definition of celebrity, and why she won't take creative direction from people with bad shoes. Please sit back and enjoy the one and only Lysa Cooper on The Days Between..

This week I'm speaking with Amber Farr. As a clothing designer and CEO Amber will tell you her primary goal is to spark joy, but don't let her modest demeanor fool you. Armed with little more than a naturally competitive instinct and an eye for fit, Amber took her line Flynn Skye from the living room to over a million dollars in sales in just 2 years. A success made all the more impressive having had no formal education in business or fashion.Amber was one of the first to realize and then harness the marketing power of Instagram and in the process launched the careers of some of the biggest names in modeling today. A move that helped to define what would become the influencer economy. Her natural business sense is eclipsed only by her gift for design, which has enabled her to create a distinct look that is often imitated but never duplicated, though many brands have tried. As mounting pressure from the industry to produce more and faster took her farther away from her ‘why' she became disillusioned with the emotional and environmental impact of fast fashion, and made a choice that would surprise many, but ultimately stayed true to her initial passion. Never one to let the fear of the unknown stop her, Amber shares her latest venture, the value of collaboration, and why it's always important to bet on yourself. So with that, here's Amber Farr on The Days Between..

This week I'm speaking with Butch Walker. From cutting his teeth as a teenager during the salad days of the raucous Sunset Strip, to writing and producing power pop hits for some of the biggest stars of today, as a musician and producer, Butch has seen it all. His passion for music and a commitment to doing the work, has given him the longevity and perspective to successfully navigate the changing winds of the music business for over three decades. As a solo artist, he is able to, in his own words ‘fly below the radar', free of outside interference creating exactly what he wants, when he wants, and in the process, garner a loyal following willing to show up time and again to support his musical exploration.Butch has achieved success on a level many dream about but few are able to reach, only to, on more than one occasion, have it all taken away, sometimes overnight. Relying on a Do It Yourself work ethic, he has rebuilt his career stronger every time, all the while maintaining a humility and sense of humor that is uniquely his own. But rather than take my word for it, here's Butch Walker on The Days Between..

This week I'm speaking with Miranda Whitcomb Pontes. A self-described serial entrepreneur, Miranda's imprint and influence on the Nashville restaurant and hospitality scene is immeasurable. There are a few people in this world who can carry themselves on their first name alone, and in my experience, Miranda is certainly one of them.As I mention in our discussion, you could throw a rock in Nashville and it would be impossible not to hit someone who has either worked for or has visited one of the restaurants she helped bring to life. In 2012, she suffered a very personal tragedy in a very public way and not only had to endure the fallout from that tragedy, but find a way to pick herself up, and with the help of the community, continue to keep moving forward and ultimately thrive.Miranda's story is proof that success can be defined in many different ways and is also more often than not created through unconventional choices and taking paths where the outcome isn't always clear, but the instinct and feeling behind those choices always is..Here's Miranda Whitcomb Pontes on The Days Between..

This week I am speaking with Zach Skow, founder of Marley's Mutts and The Positive Change program. I first became aware of Zach through the Pawsitive Change Instagram page, and admittedly, I had some preconceived notions about the incarcerated, but after watching their videos and stories, as well as having experienced the transformational healing nature of dogs in my own life, through my two rescues, I quickly found my perspective changing and really saw the power in the work they were doing not only to change the lives of those participating in the program, but also to shift societal perceptions as a whole. As you will hear in our conversation, Pawsitive Change is about much more than photo ops and Instagram posts, and regardless of where you land on the greater issue of incarceration and how we as a society view, as well as treat people who have served time in prison, it's impossible to deny that they are making a very positive impact on a very under served segment of society. And that's not even taking into account the residual affect the program has had on the participants families, as well as race relations within the prison walls. And all of this work is made possible through private donations as incredibly they get no federal or state funding.Zach's personal journey is equally as powerful as the work he is doing with Positive Change, but I'll let you hear it in his own words. So with that, here's Zach Skow on The Days Between..
