Your Nervous System Is the Vital Sign Nobody Is Checking Blood pressure. Heart rate. Respiratory rate. These are the numbers medicine has built its entire screening system around. But what if the thing driving all of those numbers, the autonomic nervous system, is never actually assessed? Dr. Terri sits down with returning guest Jim LaValle — internationally recognized clinical pharmacist, board-certified clinical nutritionist, and founder of the Metabolic Code platform — for a conversation that connects dots most clinicians never connect. The nervous system as a root driver of cardiovascular disease, thyroid dysfunction, gut permeability, autoimmune disease, blood sugar dysregulation, and sleep failure. If you're doing all the right things and still not getting results, this episode may be the missing piece. They cover heart rate variability, what your wearable data is actually telling you, why 60% of people who die of a heart attack have no arterial disease present, and the specific supplements, adaptogens, theanine, holy basil, phospholipids, aged garlic extract, that can begin to calm a chronically activated sympathetic nervous system while you work on the root cause. This is a masterclass in practical nervous system medicine. Bring a pen. What you'll discover: Why heart rate variability is as important as blood pressure — and what it tells you about your cardiovascular risk [20:21] The shocking stat: 60% of people who die of a heart attack have no arterial disease present. What is actually killing them [22:22] How chronic sympathetic dominance suppresses T3, causes gut permeability, triggers autoimmune thyroiditis, and disrupts sleep — all from the same root cause [44:45] How to use your wearable data practically: what to look at in the morning, how to read your sleep data, and why your sleep score may be lying to you [50:32] Box breathing vs. meditation: why they are two different tools that work best together — and how to know when you've actually arrived in that meditative state [35:12] Why 5am boot camp may be the worst thing you can do for your nervous system — and what to do instead [59:15] The supplement protocol for calming sympathetic dominance: theanine, loric acid, holy basil, kava, phospholipids, magnesium threonate, and Kyolic aged garlic extract [1:12:24] How blood sugar directly drives sympathetic tone — and why people with diabetes almost always end up with heart disease [1:01:58] Why childhood stress and prenatal maternal stress can hardwire sympathetic dominance into the nervous system before a child is even born [1:06:13] You cannot optimize what you have not calmed. In Episode 377 of The Real Jason Duncan Podcast, you've heard it your whole life. Happy wife, happy life. It sounds like love. It sounds like wisdom. It sounds like exactly what a good husband is supposed to do. And for Jim Lange, that's what made it so dangerous. He believed it for decades. And it didn't make his marriage better. It made him a doormat in his own home — and he called it faithfulness. Jim Lange is a number one bestselling author, executive leadership coach, and men's marriage coach who spent more than 30 years in business and leadership. He is the author of The Happy Wife Happy Life Deception: How To Stop Walking On Eggshells & Be The Man You Were Made To Be, Bleedership: Biblical First-Aid for Leaders, and Calming the Storm Within. He leads Kingdom Factor leadership roundtable groups, coaches men trapped in destructive marriages, and leads The Council of Arimathea — a community for Christian business owners who have exited their businesses and are figuring out what comes next. He has been married to Carolyn for years and is a father of five grown children and grandfather of three. Today, Jim sits down with Jason to expose the lie handed to men like a wedding gift. Four words. Happy wife, happy life. And what those four words actually do to a man who believes them — not for a year, but for decades. In this episode, Jason and Jim cover: Where the belief came from for Jim — and how deep he was in it before he started to question it The high school breakup that planted a fear of rejection that followed him into marriage for 30 years Why growing up never hearing his parents argue became a false narrative that conflict equals the end How being raised to perform for love turned him into a chronic people pleaser — and why that's a trap Why happiness is an inside job — and why no husband has the power to make his wife happy no matter how hard he tries The men's group advice that made it worse — just love her more — and why it kept him stuck The fast that finally revealed where it all started — and what God showed him in that moment The year of fireworks that followed when he finally spoke up — and what happened when he brought in a mediator, his pastor, and a counselor Why a 6'8" man couldn't see that what was happening to him was abuse — and what his coach finally helped him see The physical cost of 30 years of walking on eggshells — adrenal fatigue, two years of crashes, and what it took to recover What he'd tell an engaged couple today about this concept — and what he wishes someone had told him 20 years ago Why this lie is especially pervasive in Christian circles — and what Scripture actually says about love, submission, and mutual respect The one thing Jim wants every man still inside this lie to hear before the episode ends You can't control her happiness. You never could. And the cage you built trying to is the most expensive one you'll ever live in.
In this episode, I'm going to say something that might challenge what you've been taught in the healing space: Most nervous system tools don't actually heal you.Breathwork. Tapping. Grounding techniques. They've become the go-to solutions for regulation. But if you're still getting triggered…still repeating the same emotional patterns…still feeling like you have to “manage” yourself…Then something deeper is being missed. The Problem With Most Nervous System ToolsA lot of what's being taught right now focuses on:Calming the bodyRegulating in the momentManaging emotional reactionsAnd while that can feel helpful, it doesn't create lasting change. Because these tools only come in after the trigger is already activated. They don't address:Why the trigger existsWhere the emotional pattern came fromThe belief driving the reactionSo you stay in a loop of: trigger → tool → temporary relief → repeatWhy Other Approaches Keep You StuckThis is why people:Stay in therapy for yearsKeep using the same techniquesStill feel triggered despite “doing the work”Because they're being taught how to cope, not how to resolve. And when something isn't resolved, you have to keep managing it forever. What Actually Works (My Approach)My work is different.Instead of managing the nervous system, I go to the root of what's dysregulating it in the first place. That means:Identifying the original beliefRevisiting the emotional imprintChanging the meaning of the experienceRewiring the pattern at its sourceWhen I change the belief and the emotion attached to it, the trigger disappears. Not managed. Not controlled. Gone. Why This Creates Real, Lasting ChangeWhen you do this deeper work:You don't need tools to calm downYou don't get triggered in the same wayYou stop repeating the same emotional cyclesBecause you've removed the root cause. And when the root is gone, there's nothing left to regulate.A Personal ExampleI share my experience growing up with fear and strict conditioning that shaped my beliefs about men and relationships. Those beliefs followed me into adulthood until I went back and changed them. Not by breathing through the trigger but by transforming the belief that created it.That's when everything shifted. This Work Requires More — But Gives MoreThis isn't a quick fix.It requires:HonestyVulnerabilityWillingness to revisit discomfortBut the result is something most tools can't give you: Freedom from the pattern — not temporary relief from it.Download my free guide, Calm the Craving: 7 Steps to Break Emotional and Binge Eating, and finally end the cycle of out-of-control eating: www.sherryshaban.comWork With Sherry Shaban:Book your FREE 30-minute Food Freedom Call and start your journey to lasting change! www.sherryshabanfitness.com/clarityListen & SubscribeCatch more episodes at www.makepeacewithfood.com/podcast or subscribe on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or YouTube so you never miss an episode!Connect & Go DeeperJoin our Facebook Community: www.myfoodfreedomlifestyle.comWork with Sherry: www.sherryshaban.com/transformExplore more resources: www.makepeacewithfood.comShare Your TakeawayTag us on Instagram (@makepeacewithfoodofficial), Facebook (@MakePeaceWithFoodOfficial), TikTok (@sherryshaban), or LinkedIn (sherryshaban) and share your biggest insight from this episode!

Will I Ever Smile Again? Life After Child Loss Will I ever smile again? Not the one you put on so people stop worrying. Not the one you wear at the store so nobody asks. The real one — the kind that reaches your eyes. Some of you can't remember the last time it happened. And underneath that question is one you can barely say: if you ever do smile again, are you leaving your child behind? This is our 300th episode — a milestone we reached together — and there is no question more fitting to sit with than this one. Because the answer isn't what most people hand a grieving mother. It's deeper and far more honest than "hang in there." In this episode, you'll discover:

For years, chronic fatigue, joint pain, and skin issues can leave you feeling unheard, especially when your labs come back "normal." This episode explores why standard testing often misses the inflammation quietly driving those symptoms, and shares practical, faith-based steps for supporting your body through natural means. This episode is for the Christian woman who is tired of guessing at what's wrong and trying remedy after remedy with no real answers. She's done more research, tried more things, and asked more questions than most people around her — and she's ready for real, grounded next steps instead of more guesswork. What Inflammation Actually Is Inflammation is the body's natural response to injury, illness, or something foreign like germs, toxins, or chronic stress. It's a necessary part of healing, but when it becomes chronic, it can quietly contribute to exhaustion, autoimmune conditions, and a long list of health struggles that don't always show up clearly on a standard lab panel. Why Conventional Labs Don't Always Tell the Full Story Many common lab tests weren't designed to catch the subtler imbalances that functional and naturopathic practitioners often look for. After personal health struggles, including a painful skin flare-up back in 2019, a functional medicine evaluation revealed significant nutrient deficiencies and gut health issues that standard testing had never flagged. This isn't a claim that conventional labs are wrong. It is a reminder that they don't always capture the whole picture, and that seeking additional wisdom and information is a reasonable, faithful step toward better health. A Personal Turning Point Before making dietary changes, weight had dropped to 90 pounds from confusion over what to eat, and topical steroids were part of daily life. Committing to a gut cleanse, adjusting diet, and addressing nutritional deficiencies changed the trajectory entirely. Today, medication use is rare, energy is strong, and daily life includes working, homeschooling, and staying active. This isn't shared to boast, but as a testimony to what became possible through seeking God's wisdom for the body He designed. Practical Ways to Support Your Body Through Inflammation Several approaches have made a real difference over time: Fish oil has supported joint comfort, particularly easing stiffness that once caused a thumb to lock in place. Diluted, raw apple cider vinegar with the mother has helped calm flare-ups of heat and inflammation, especially in the hands. Warm baths with calming essential oil blends offer a simple way to unwind and support the body's stress response. Prioritizing seven to eight hours of sleep, rather than the four to six hours once considered normal, has made a noticeable difference. Prayer and quiet time with God, including learning to sit in silence and actually listen for His response rather than treating prayer as one-sided, has become a foundational stress-management practice. Breathing techniques, such as the physiological sigh and box breathing, offer accessible tools for calming the nervous system in stressful moments. Addressing emotional health through counseling, retreats, and community with other women has been just as important as physical remedies. Reducing toxic exposure by switching to cleaner personal care products has, for some, led to real improvements in symptoms like migraines and allergies. None of these are presented as a cure-all. They are pieces of a whole-person approach that honors both the body's design and the wisdom God provides through it. Staying curious and asking questions is a wise, faithful response, not an overreaction. Healing is rarely one single fix. It tends to come through small, consistent choices across nutrition, rest, stress, and spiritual life. Prayer is meant to be a conversation, not a monologue. Leaving room to listen can be as valuable as the words spoken. Real change often starts with choosing just one or two practical steps rather than trying to overhaul everything at once. Your body was designed with intention. Learning to understand it, rather than fight it, is part of stewarding the health God has given you. Ready for Your Next Right Step? And in the exhaustion of your grief, that question can rise up quietly: how much is one heart supposed to hold? This week, Teresa sits with you right there.
