Prime Minister Mark Carney chose to deliver his highly anticipated speech to Canadians about “the scourge of antisemitism” from inside a storied Toronto synagogue, Holy Blossom. It's a spot where, for weeks this spring, heavily armed police SWAT teams were dispatched so worshippers could feel safe. Carney's speech — which was broadcast live nationally — follows years of increased violent attacks on Jewish institutions, including fire bombs, gunshots, physical altercations and graffiti. Carney acknowledged that antisemitism has reached levels not seen since the Second World War and announced his government will assemble a new team of experts who will study the causes and drivers of antisemitism right away. The new ministerial advisory council has only one Jewish member out of the seven. Rabbis, advocacy leaders and community figures said they appreciated the prime minister's speech, but questioned why it took him so long, why he didn't deliver it in the House of Commons, and — most glaringly — why he never mentioned Israel, Zionism, Hamas, Oct. 7 or Iran. NSW will introduce new laws criminalising Nazi chants and behaviours that signal support for extremist ideology, following a recent neo-Nazi protest outside Parliament. Offenders face up to a year in prison, with harsher penalties near Jewish sites. Jewish community leaders welcome the move as an ethical stand against rising hate, though experts warn legislation alone cannot eliminate extremism without broader education and prevention efforts.

Jewish community leaders in Melbourne and other Australian cities recently gathered for sombre vigils, hosted under the banner of the New Israeli Fund (NIF), to mark the two-year anniversary of the October 7th terror attacks. Amidst the solemn reflections, the gatherings also saw leaders address the prospect of a peace deal between Israel and Hamas.

On Sept. 19, Prime Minister Mark Carney's government unveiled a series of planned changes to Canada's criminal code. They, in part, crack down on the explosion of hate crimes across the country over the past two years since Oct. 7, mostly against Jewish people. The new bill is called the “Combatting Hate Act” and still has a way to go before it is passed and takes effect. Ottawa intends to make it a crime when hateful protesters try to scare and intimidate minorities, including Jews, from accessing their community buildings, including synagogues, Jewish Community Centres, Jewish seniors homes, Hebrew schools and even cemeteries. The new law would also, for the first time, outlaw the public display of the Nazi swastika and the SS symbol in Canada, as well as other terrorism signs, if the people waving them are wilfully urging hatred against an identifiable group. Many Jewish leaders are applauding the gesture as a strong signal that the Carney administration is keeping an election promise while putting a strong emphasis on fighting domestic antisemitism–that even while Canada announced on Sept. 21 it has formally recognized the Palestinian State, the government does not want to drag Middle Eastern politics onto Canadian soil. So what's in the new bill? Will it make it safer for Jews today, as the High Holidays begin? The short answer is: no. In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. He says “I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises.” And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.” Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—  and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham's descendants. For this reason he had to be made like them,fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.
