The Paradox of Selflessness: How Wokeism and Trumpism Betray Rational Self-Interest In this episode of Rational Egoist, host Michael Liebowitz and guest Robert Tracinski, Senior fellow at the Atlas Society and author of "Who is John Galt, Anyway? A Pocket Guide to Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged," explore the challenges of civil discourse in the age of wokeism and Trumpism. Drawing on their expertise in rational egoism, Liebowitz and Tracinski discuss the paradox of selflessness as it manifests in these two irrational beliefs. Wokeism promotes a collectivist mindset that seeks to suppress individual thinking and expression, while Trumpism emphasizes a cult of personality that values loyalty to the leader over rational self-interest. Liebowitz and Tracinski argue that both of these ideologies betray the true spirit of rational self-interest, which requires individuals to pursue their own goals and values in cooperation with others, without sacrificing their own well-being to the demands of the collective or the authority of the leader. The conversation also touches on the challenges of engaging in civil discourse in the era of social media and the importance of protecting individual rights and freedoms in order to build a more prosperous and just society for all. Ultimately, Liebowitz and Tracinski make the case that a rational egoist approach, based on the pursuit of rational self-interest, is the key to achieving true progress and prosperity in society, and that the irrational beliefs of wokeism and Trumpism are holding us back from achieving our full potential as individuals and as a society. Michael Liebowitz is a philosopher, political activist, and host of the Rational Egoist podcast. He is a passionate advocate for the philosophy of Objectivism, as developed by Ayn Rand, and has dedicated his life to promoting its principles of rational self-interest, individualism, and reason. In addition to his work as a podcast host, Liebowitz is also a prominent spokesperson for the Libertarian Party in the United States, and has been involved in a number of political campaigns advocating for individual rights and freedoms. Liebowitz's life story is a testament to the transformative power of Objectivism. After spending 25 years in prison, he was able to turn his life around by embracing the principles of rational self-interest and morality espoused by Ayn Rand. He has since become an influential voice in the libertarian and Objectivist communities, using his own experience to inspire others to live their lives in accordance with reason, individualism, and self-interest. Liebowitz is also the co-author of "Down the Rabbit Hole: How the Culture of Correction Encourages Crime," a book that explores the ways in which misguided societal attitudes towards punishment and rehabilitation have led to a rise in crime and recidivism. In addition to his work in politics and philosophy, Liebowitz is a regular guest on the Todd Feinburg show at WTIC, where he provides expert commentary on a range of political and social issues.

We talk about ethical egoism, which Rupert seems to feel is dismissed a little bit too lightly, and we hear about how he's going to try to defend it. While Rupert’s talking about ethics and about what determines or fixes ethical truths – where they come from – at the same time in the background there are lot of other issues about political philosophy and authority and freedom and the state. I cut some of that discussion out just to help keep this episode focused on a particular subject, but Rupert's made some reading suggestions for you to follow-up, and they cover some of these broader topics. So, some things for you to explore: * An introductory / survey article to get started is this one by James Rachels, 'Ethical Egoism', in Shafer-Landau, R (ed.) Ethical Theory: An Anthology.: Wiley-Blackwell, pp. 48-53 * This collected volume of papers on the topic comes hotly recommended: David Gauthier (ed.) Morality and Rational Self-Interest. New Jersey: Prentice Hall, 1970. * Rupert mentions Sidgwick's 'rational egoism', which is discussed in his 1872 book The Methods of Ethics. * A slightly more recent piece that comes up in our discussion is by Jesse Kalin (from 1975) "Two Kinds of Moral Reasoning: Ethical Egoism as a Moral Theory". Canadian Journal of Philosophy, 5 (3), pp.323-356. Matt Maruca began his self-education journey at age 13. In middle school Matt began seeking answers to a variety of chronic ailments, discovered the joys of self-directed learning and never looked back. After realizing and harnessing his efficacy and abilities, he found school to be an almost intolerable obstacle to his education. In this interlude between the two parts of Matt's story he asks my advice on a few topics. Question #1: Matt is learning more about politics and philosophy and wants to share these ideas with friends. What's the best approach? What framing errors should be avoided? How do we get ideological opponents to look at their own ideas critically? We talk about communication, persuasion, shame, compassion and the inquisitive approach. Question #2: Rational Self-Interest. Matt believes a strong society starts with strong individuals. How do we build ourselves up? Where do we begin in our efforts to feel better, stronger and more resourceful? In this epsiode I share some thoughts on the motive behind the recent mass shooting in Texas, as well as violence in general. I talk about the importance of the recognition of one's innate value in being able to value others. I also talk about survival, and the need for ethics, philosophy and virtue to make a comeback in our society. I share an empowering quote from Ayn Rand, talk about her ideas, and debunk many of the misconceptions about her work and how I feel it is important to understand given todays socio-political situation. Quote: ..Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swamps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists.. it is real.. it is possible.. it's yours. Ayn RandWriter, PhilosopherSome notes on Ayn Rand: warned against big government back when governments were 5% of what they are today - welfare state will increase poverty: a redistribution of wealth via the welfare state (socialism) will not solve poverty but create a dependant underclass - imperialism will lead to disaster - public education will worsen - crony capitalist with no morals will take control of the government - the elements of “capitalism” today that most people hate and protest against were all incessantly warned against and predicted BY Ayn Rand. - Rand believed the source of wealth is free trade and property rights. Economists for decades have established that the more FREE MARKET there is, the more economic growth and abundance there is. - She argued for the rights of women and against racism which she equated to tribalism decades before civil rights and classical feminism became hot political issues.
Objections to Objectivism: critiques of Ayn Rand from a moderate
Is rational self-interest sufficient as a basis for morals and indeed all philosophy? What does Rand mean by rational self-interest? How must I decide what is rational? Is our rational self-interest often obvious? Is rational self-interest enforcable or at all self-enforcing? Is rational self-interest persuasive? Can it change the hearts of evil men, or at least lead them into less evil? Plus, taking potshots using Ayn Rand as ammo, and considering the context of the non-initiation-of-force principle.
