In today's episode of the Atheist Experience, Justin and JMike discuss Biblical inaccuracies and the truth of these claims. Steve in NE, argues that enslaved people in Egypt would have owned their own houses. Justin explains that the Hebrews were subject to forced labor and how this differs from being owned as property. The illogical claims of Moses writing the Torah is as problematic as the stories Exodus. Sargon of Akkad is a story that is suspiciously similar to that of Moses; and it occurs earlier in time. There is no evidence that the Torah was written in Egyptian or that Moses wrote it. What language would Moses have spoken and used?Kevin in TX wants to know if it is wrong to believe in a deity based on self-preservation reasons. Having the support of family and peers may go away if you come out in some situations. How much and what component of this belief is fear based?Kaiser in OR thinks that The Atheist Experience is intellectually fraudulent because the issues of god are not complex enough to warrant a full show. How do you know that some of the hosts did not have a concept of god before they deconverted? We live in a society where lots of people believe in something we don't think exists; we push back when there are consequences for these beliefs. How are you not a hypocrite when you call yourself an evangelical atheist? Maybe you should roll with theists. Dylan in FL has questions about the validity of the New Testament. If the New Testament tells a lie about the older scriptures, should we still trust it? Does the Bible need to be inherent? How many lies have to be told before you say it is not true? Why does Mathew 2:14-16 tell a bold faced lie about a prophecy? The sharpshooter fallacy starts with the conclusion starts with an arrow in a tree where a circle is drawn around it to show the target. They start with the conclusion and then find things that look like it and call it prophecy. Alfred in TX says that religion has utility and wants to know if the hosts want it phased out. Mike explains that he wants to see the bad things that come from religion go away and how it depends on  a number of things. Justin uses a brilliant analogy of an umbrella that has utility, but every 1,000 uses omits a noxious gas. Why would god tell the Israelites that they could own slaves, kidnap women to make them wives? When conforming to Biblical lies, where do you draw the line? You might be de-converting quicker than you think if you continue on this path. Dr. Ben joins to offer some final thoughts before closing us out. Thank you for joining us today and we will see you next time!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-atheist-experience--3254896/support.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit zeteo.comAward-winning novelist and journalist Omar El Akkad has just released his first non-fiction book titled One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This. The book follows his previous fiction novel, American War, which was named by the BBC as one of 100 novels that shaped our world. The book's title, inspired by a viral tweet Akkad posted in October of 2023, gives you a good hint that the main theme is the genocide in Gaza. Akkad joins ‘Mehdi Unfiltered' to discuss the many themes in his book, what inspired it, and why so many are silent when they shouldn't be.“I think there's a lot of people who have become very well versed in looking away and keeping their head down and then checking every once in a while, to see what the prevailing opinion is,” he tells Mehdi. Indeed, the silence from so many on the suffering of Palestinians is deafening, but it isn't new, nor is it exclusive to Palestinians, as he explores in his powerful new book.“It is very difficult to find somebody who was on board with apartheid in South Africa. Everyone's against it, in hindsight. That avenue has always been available.” The more time passes, the more it seems everyone was on the right side of history. But in Gaza's case - the first live-streamed genocide - Mehdi asks Akkad if looking away is the same as it used to be.“I think operating under the systems of power that we have generally, relies in large extent on looking away, and this was much, much more difficult to look away from,” Akkad says. You can click here to buy a copy of Akkad's latest book ‘One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This' and also, do share your review with us in the comments below! fWotD Episode 2727: The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 22 October 2024 is The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes. The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes is a 2021 interactive drama and survival horror video game developed by Supermassive Games and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It is the third game of the first season of The Dark Pictures Anthology. The game features a multilinear plot in which decisions can significantly alter the trajectory of the story and change the relationships between the five playable protagonists; some lead to their permanent deaths. House of Ashes is set during the 2003 invasion of Iraq and follows five characters—four Americans working for the US Armed Forces and one Iraqi Republican Guard—who must escape from an underground Akkadian temple and survive the vampiric creatures that infest the area. Ashley Tisdale, who plays CIA operative Rachel King, was marketed as the game's leading actress. Jason Graves, a long-time collaborator with Supermassive for the series, composed the soundtrack during COVID-19 lockdowns in the United Kingdom.Reappearing in House of Ashes are staple mechanics of The Dark Pictures Anthology, such as quick time events (QTEs), two single-player and two multiplayer modes, and collectibles that allow players to see visions of possible future events. New features include a more interactive camera system, a handheld light source for easier navigation, and three difficulty levels to manage QTEs. The films Aliens, Predator, and The Descent, as well as the H. P. Lovecraft novella At the Mountains of Madness and the myth of the Curse of Akkad were the main influences for the game. The creatures were made using motion capture and hand animation, and the temple's design was inspired by ancient Mesopotamian architecture. Military specialists and Arabic speakers were consulted to ensure a faithful depiction of the war.House of Ashes was released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on 22 October 2021, to mixed reviews. Several critics deemed it an improvement from the previous two instalments in the anthology, and points of praise included the replay value, QTE intensity, cinematography, multiplayer modes, and likeability of the Iraqi character. Critiques were directed towards the game's pacing, scare factor, facial animations, texture and animation glitches, and handling of the Iraq War. The fourth game in the series and the season one finale, The Devil in Me, was revealed in a teaser trailer at the end of House of Ashes and released on 18 November 2022.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 13:46 UTC on Tuesday, 5 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Nicole.

Genesis 10 is often referred to as the “Table of Nations,” as it provides a genealogy that traces the descendants of Noah's three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—following the flood. This chapter outlines how various peoples and nations of the ancient world emerged from Noah's family. Breakdown of Genesis 10: 1.The Descendants of Japheth (Genesis 10:2–5): Japheth's lineage is associated with the peoples of the northern and western regions, often seen as the ancestors of the Indo-European nations. Some key descendants include: •Gomer, linked to the Cimmerians or other northern tribes. •Magog, associated with peoples from the region near the Black Sea. •Javan, believed to be the ancestor of the Greeks and other maritime nations. Verse 5 mentions that these descendants spread out across the islands and coastal regions, suggesting that Japheth's line populated much of Europe and parts of Asia. 2.The Descendants of Ham (Genesis 10:6–20): Ham's descendants are typically associated with Africa and parts of the Near East. His lineage includes: •Cush, associated with Ethiopia or the Nubian region. •Mizraim, often identified with Egypt. •Canaan, whose descendants are connected with the land of Canaan. This section also includes a mention of Nimrod, a mighty hunter and ruler who established significant cities, such as Babel, Akkad, and Nineveh, playing a pivotal role in the rise of Mesopotamian civilization. 3.The Descendants of Shem (Genesis 10:21–31): Shem is traditionally seen as the ancestor of the Semitic peoples, including the Hebrews, Assyrians, and Arameans. His descendants, such as Elam, Asshur, and Arphaxad, populated the regions of the Middle East. Arphaxad's lineage eventually leads to Abram (Abraham), establishing the connection to the Israelites. Significance of Genesis 10: The genealogy in Genesis 10 provides an account of how the nations were divided after the flood. It highlights that humanity, despite its diversity, traces its origins back to a common ancestor—Noah. This chapter emphasizes the unity of the human race and establishes a foundational framework for understanding the relationships among the different peoples in biblical history. The “Table of Nations” also sets the stage for the Tower of Babel narrative in Genesis 11, where the scattering of peoples and the diversification of languages are described.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sendme-radio--732966/support.

The Bible as Literature
Why is There Violence in Deuteronomy?

The Bible as Literature

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 3, 2024 39:31

Why is there violence in the Bible? Why did the authors of Deuteronomy present parables of genocide? Why did the gospel writers posit a story about tribal, religious, and political betrayals, acts of treason, and violent acts by the hand of God? Why do both Testaments deal with war, cruelty, violence, and the threat of God's wrath? The New Testament is not new in its content. It is the same old content directed at a new audience. The Bible is not a bunch of broken fragments from different writers patched together arbitrarily. This is a boring orientalist theory invented by German colonial scholars that nobody who knows what they are talking about takes seriously anymore.J,E,D,P,Q. The last one is my favorite. If you can't find the source, there must be an all-powerful imaginary source called “Q.” It was such an excellent idea that Gene Roddenberry named an entire race of fictional narcissistic deities “Q.” Good job, biblical scholarship! You're so “mystical.”For heaven's sake, pick up a copy of Tarazi and catch up.As inconvenient as it is for Westernized (Hellenized) Christians, Paul's teaching of grace—his repurposing of Roman gratia in submission to the teaching of the Cross—was a reapplication of Deuteronomy's literary wrath against Israel's sense of self-entitlement and self-importance. A redirection of God's judgment against the latest monsters to invade and occupy Mesopotamia. Deuteronomy was something like a “directed conversation” held indirectly with all parties in which God himself warns everyone, beginning with Israel:“The land belongs to me. It put you in, and I can talk you out. ”The New Testament repeats this warning to a new audience: “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.” (Deuteronomy 21:22-23; Galatians 3:13) This verse or “sign” is the novelty of the prophetic self-destruction of the Temple and of the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, and its sign is clear: the Emperor has no clothes.I wish Congress understood Deuteronomy. But how could they? Even Western scholars, let alone the clergy, don't get it.“Yet to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to know, nor eyes to see, nor ears to hear.” (Deuteronomy 29:4)Remember, the writers of the Torah, who wrote under the pen name “Moses,” were something akin to disillusioned and disaffected State Department employees. So why did Scripture deal with violence head-on, placing all violence in the hands of the unseen and indepictable God? Let me count the ways for you. For all of you “evolved” and “enlightened” Westerners. The following are notable genocides and massacres committed by invaders against occupied populations, starting from the Mesopotamian era through the Greek and Roman periods.Conquest of Sumerian City-States by Sargon of Akkad (2334–2279 BC)Gutian Invasion and Destruction of Akkad (2150 BC)Destruction of Ur by the Elamites and Amorites (2004 BC)Destruction of Mari by Hammurabi (1761 BC)Destruction of Babylon by the Hittites (1595 BC)Elamite Conquest of Babylon (1155 BC)Assyrian Destruction of Susa (647 BC)Destruction of Babylon by Assyrians (689 BC)Persian Conquest of Elam (540 BC)Destruction of Thebes (335 BC)Siege of Tyre (332 BC)Destruction of Carthage (146 BC)Massacre of the Lusitanians (150 BC)Gallic Wars (58–50 BC)If you want to get a sense of the cruelty and horror of each of these events, read Deuteronomy!“NOTHING CHANGES UNDER THE SUN.”

The sons of Ra'mah were Sh'va and D'dan.8 Kush fathered Nimrod, who was the first powerful ruler on earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before Adonai — this is why people say, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before Adonai.” 10 His kingdom began with Bavel, Erekh, Akkad and Kalneh, in the land of Shin'ar. 11 Ashur went out from that land and built Ninveh, the city Rechovot, Kelach, 12 and Resen between Ninveh and Kelach — that one is the great city.13 Mitzrayim fathered the Ludim, the 'Anamim, the L'havim, the Naftuchim, 14 the Patrusim, the Kasluchim (from whom came the P'lishtim) and the Kaftorim.15 Kena'an fathered Tzidon his firstborn, Het, 16 the Y'vusi, the Emori, the Girgashi, 17 the Hivi, the 'Arki, the Sini, 18 the Arvadi, the Tz'mari and the Hamati. Afterwards, the families of the Kena'ani were dispersed. 19 The border of the Kena'ani was from Tzidon, as you go toward G'rar, to 'Azah; as you go toward S'dom, 'Amora, Admah and Tzvoyim, to Lesha.20 These were the descendants of Ham, according to their families and languages, in their lands and in their nations.Lineage of Shem21 Children were also born to Shem, ancestor of all the descendants of 'Ever and older brother of Yefet. 22 The sons of Shem were 'Elam, Ashur, Arpakhshad, Lud and Aram. 23 The sons of Aram were 'Utz, Hul, Geter and Mash. 24 Arpakhshad fathered Shelach, and Shelach fathered 'Ever. 25 To 'Ever were born two sons. One was given the name Peleg [division], because during his lifetime the earth was divided. His brother's name was Yoktan. 26 Yoktan fathered Almodad, Shelef, Hatzar-Mavet, Yerach, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 'Oval, Avima'el, Sheva, 29 Ofir, Havilah and Yovav — all these were the sons of Yoktan. 30 Their territory stretched from Mesha, as you go toward S'far, to the mountain in the east.31 These were the descendants of Shem, according to their families and languages, in their lands and in their nations.32 These were the families of the sons of Noach, according to their generations, in their nations. There is this content creator on youtube called Manosphere that experienced a lot of growth then had all his channel demonitized. Could you talk about that." Well Brian thanks for the donation and topic. I looked through his socialblade stats and he started about seven months ago and his channel immediately exploded in the first month with over two million views. He was approaching one hundred thousand subscribers and everything looked good and all of a sudden he couldn't make any more money. With YouTube these days there is a 6 to 12 month window of initial success and then you start to plateau and fade out. You get pumped up by the algorithm and die by the algorithm. I've seen stuff like this happen to dozens of creators over the last five years. That's when you learn who's in it for just the money and who's in it to make a difference, start a revolution or change the world. Manosphere was taken down for reusing content without adding enough of his own commentary. Meaning he was a clips channel playing mostly TikTok videos and doing it under fair use. Demonitizing him was YouTubes' way to discourage channels that just copy past content. Recently Carl Benjamin or Sargon of Akkad also got demonitized because apparently another channel was using his content. He's been on YouTube as long as my and started in 2014 and cleaned up his channel and didn't swear or break any of the rules and still got demonitized. He took to YouTube to complain about is and a few days later he was given a strike for bullying and harassment from YouTube. Clearly they have it out for him and a lot of guys. Twitter has recently started doing so shady stuff too. I'm paying 10 bucks a month so I don't get spammed by ads and yet Twitter is putting the ads in my feed over the last week. A while back they also gave me a 12 hour suspension for something I posted. They forced me to take it down but they didn't explain to me what the post was. They wouldn't let me see what had offended their policy. They wouldn't tell me which rule I had broken. All I'm doing is retweets from other. It's hard to know what it was because I post 20 to 30 times a day. So I won't be copying memes as much, reuploading them and posting them. I'll just repost them with a quote. That way Twitter won't be able to take me down again. But I'm sure they will come up with a reason. As for YouTube demonitization the best thing that might have ever happened to me might have been demonitization because I promoted the Brave Browser and made a boat load of basic attention tokens. That forced me to learn how crypto works and conveted them to Bitcoin which I never would have bought with my own money. And a couple of years from now I might be a multimillionaire. My advice for the content creator Manosphere would be to look into selling his own merchandise, advertising on his channel as well as getting something like Subscribestar up. You can't just rely on the advertising revenue from YouTube itself. It also looks like Manosphere stopped producing content for a month and disapeared after being demonitized. He pulled a ton of his content, probably re-applied for monetization and didn't get it so then started a second channel. That worked for me with my Sandman 2 channel but YouTube isn't treating me kindly giving me views. It was smart for Manosphere to do what he did but I doubt he's going to get to 97k subscribers on the new channel like the old one in six months and make five to ten K a month like he was probably doing. These days you also have to fight for every inch of exposure. Be it on Rumble, Bitchute, Twitter, or YouTube. Use every platform to grow. Use Subscribestar, Patreon, Cashapp, Paypal. You can't put all you eggs in one basket because some purple haired freak is going to come and smash that basket. Enheduana was a Sumerian princess who lived around 2300 BCE and composed what is now regarded as the earliest poetry by a known author. Her father, Sargon of Akkad, is said to have created the world's first empire, stretching from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean, and as part of his imperial mission he installed his daughter as the high priestess of the temple of the moon god, Nanna, in the city of Ur. In that capacity, Enheduana composed hymns of remarkable beauty, often governed by a powerful authorial voice.Anna Della Subin joins Tom to discuss a new translation of Enheduana's complete poems, read some of them in the original Sumerian, and consider the ways in which they challenge our ideas of authorship and literary history.Read more, and listen ad free, on the LRB website: https://lrb.me/enheduanapod Hosted on Acast. Today we read through the Dialogue of Pessimism and the Poor Man of Nippur. Both are comedies with a bit of edge to them, though in very different formats, showing the richness of ancient literature. Dialogue of Pessimism is basically a two-man standup routine, with a fair amount of philosophical ideas thrown in as part of the comedy. Poor Man of Nippur is a farce mixed with a revenge tale, grounded with a perspective we rarely see in ancient literature, the common man viewing the wealthy and powerful. Today we read through the five poems of Jeremiah's Lamentations over the destruction of Jerusalem. We look in particular at the historical context and the humanness of this 2600 year old performance, but also at some of the theological innovations that, already at the start of the Babylonian exile, are marking the exilic Jews out as a faith distinct from their neighbors and unique in the world. The main Mesopotamian context here is the genre of Laments which was already at least 1500 years old when Jeremiah wrote this one. I read one of these on the main show, a bonus episode between eps 55 and 56 called Lament for Ur, but if you want to get deeper into the now little known genre of this text, definitely take a look at the City Laments section on ETCSL: https://etcsl.orinst.ox.ac.uk/cgi-bin/etcsl.cgi?text=c.2.2*# The first Oldest Stories book, covering Sumer and Akkad, is available for purchase: https://a.co/d/64mxp6w --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/oldeststories/message

Israel has been destroyed by the Assyrians, and Judah very nearly follows. But Jerusalem never does fall to the Assyrians, and the re-emergence of the southern kingdom is almost as shocking as the internal discord that accompanies it. We look today a lot of prophets and religious policies alongside military issues, because these do seem to be driving politics and polarized factionalism in a big way. ONE OF THE MOST notorious characters in the Bible, and all of history, is a man about which we know almost nothing. Nimrod is blamed for the Tower of Babel and the occult wickedness of Babylon. However, a close reading of the Bible and the history of the ancient Near East doesn't specifically connect him with either. Some identify Nimrod as the Sumerian king Enmerkar, some as Sargon the Great of Akkad, others as the mythical hero of Uruk, Gilgamesh. How much do we really know about Nimrod? Is there any connection to Semiramis, Tammuz, and Christmas? Doug Van Dorn (www.douglasvandorn.com), author of Giants: Sons of the Gods, Dr. Judd Burton (www.BurtonBeyond.net), author of Interview With the Giant, and Brian Godawa (www.Godawa.com), best-selling author of the new novel Cruel Logic join us for our monthly round table to discuss the man, the myth, the legend—Nimrod. Here's the link to Derek's paper “The Double-Headed Eagle: Scottish Rite Freemasonry's Veneration of Nimrod.”This is the BBC News article that got everyone so excited 20 years ago: “Gilgamesh Tomb Believed Found.” Except that's not what Dr. Jörg Fassbinder actually said. Fassbinder's team did a magenetometric survey of the site of ancient Uruk, the city ruled by Gilgamesh probably 5,000 years ago (give or take). They mapped magnetic anomalies in the soil to find the city walls and outlines of buildings in the city. During the survey, they found the outline of a structure in what was formerly the course of the Euphrates River that was similar to the description of the tomb described in the Epic of Gilgamesh. Fassbinder and his team excavated nothing. And yet that BBC story has been twisted and retold so often that it's now taken as an article of faith that videos with titles like “Gilgamesh Nephilim King FOUND INTACT IN TOMB” are still being produced—and getting about 100 times more views than our program because we stick to actual evidence. Here's a 2002 story from Radio Free Europe about Dr. Fassbinder's work with a title that's more accurate and less clickbait: “Iraq: Archaeological Expedition Mapping Ancient City Of Uruk.”Here are the relevant papers by Jörg Fassbinder:Beneath the Euphrates Sediments: Magnetic Traces of the Mesopotamian Megacity Uruk (2020)Uruk (Iraq) Magnetometry in the First Megacity of Mesopotamia (2018)Magnetometry at Uruk (Iraq): City of King Gilgamesh (2003)You can see his work is all with the magnetometer, not the shovel or spade. For the first time ever, parents going through IVF can use whole genome sequencing to screen their embryos for hundreds of conditions. Harness the power of genetics to keep your family safe, with Orchid. Check them out at orchidhealth.com. On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib talks to Peter Nimitz about what he memorably calls the crisis of the 23rd century. Most people know of the fall of Rome, and the subsequent European Dark Ages. And because of scholars like Eric Cline, today growing numbers are aware of the civilizational collapse at the end of the Bronze Age, when an incipient global civilization enfolding everything from the shores of the eastern Mediterranean to Mesopotamia was torn apart by climate change and invasion. But before Rome, before the Hittites, the third millennium BC saw a climatic shock that seems to have abruptly transformed all Eurasia and Africa. There have long been glimmers of this upheaval; historical texts record chaos in Sumer and Akkad, while in Egypt the Old Kingdom fell. But today the toolkit of archaeology can illuminate far more, and is making clear that a massive climatic shift toppled fragile empires and transformed cultures. Some areas of Eurasia, like China, seem to have experienced massive drought. Others, like Siberia, became even colder, with regions becoming ever more inhospitable to human occupation. And now Nimitz has reviewed what we know region by region in a magisterial post, Crisis of the 23rd Century: Upheavals from Spain to the Yangtze. Razib presses him about the contrast between the three peninsulas of Southern Europe: the Iberian, Italian and Balkan, and how they each experienced the intrusion of Indo-Europeans during this period (informed by ancient DNA findings). They also discuss the potential divide between Corded Ware and non-Corded Ware Indo-European migrations, and how that shook out across Eurasia. Then they touch upon the civilizational hearths of the Near East, and the wholesale transformation that occurred at this moment culturally and demographically in the Horn of Africa. Finally they sweep eastward, into Siberia, Central Asia and finally China, where new cultures arose and old civilizations collapsed in the centuries after the crisis of the 23rd century.
