In this week's episode, titled "Today vs. Tomorrow," I embark on a journey that resonates deeply with me, sparked by the pervasive challenge of choosing between instant gratification and the rewards of delayed satisfaction. This theme, a reflection of the choices we face daily, ignites a desire in me to delve into the essence of making great decisions, the importance of nurturing 'yourself across time,' and the profound impact of developing beneficial habits today for the wellbeing of our future selves and the people in our lives. With personal stories and keen observations, I navigate the delicate balance between the pleasures of the present and the promises of the future. I challenge the often easy path of immediate rewards, advocating for a life defined by foresight, discipline, and a deep-seated commitment to our future selves. Drawing from a rich mosaic of experiences, I question the common practice of seeking short-term satisfaction at the expense of long-term gains. Moreover, this episode examines how our perception of time influences our decisions and behaviors. How does recognizing the finitude of our existence motivate us to prioritize actions that not only serve us today but also safeguard and enhance our tomorrows? Let's redefine gratification, prioritize our long-term wellbeing, and embark on a path of mindful decision-making. It's about making choices that resonate not just today, but echo into the future. Join me as we journey together, making each day count for ourselves and those we hold dear. Let's shape our tomorrows with the decisions we make today. As always, I will be sharing several thought-provoking concepts for you to ponder and apply in your life in the days to come. For those feeling empowered, there will also be a challenge awaiting your participation! All the love, all the power, all of the time! Today we focus on the best way to parent when your kids are young so they will be most prepared for planned emancipation when they reach adolescence. Dr. Ken is concerned about a kind of parenting that reverses the healthy pattern of teaching and disciplining young children followed by conscious releasing control in adolescence. "Reverse parenting" is the temptation many parents follow to allow their younger children too much freedom when young and then being surprised when freedoms given in in adolescence are of little impact. Are you "parenting in reverse?" Most people just want to be right. If you've ever paid close attention to how people talk to each other, nobody is actually listening. It's just a game of right vs. wrong where the “listener” is just waiting for the other person to stop talking so they can talk again. This is not listening. It's not even effective communication. Listening and communication are skills that need to be developed—skills that many adults don't ever end up mastering. This gets compounded when we become parents. If we haven't learned how to effectively communicate by the time we have children, we then make it damn near impossible for our children to learn and master these skills. It becomes a vicious cycle that makes relationships exhausting and hard. You've heard me discuss how many of our issues actually stem from our childhood. This is no different. As a child, I grew up in a very authoritarian household. My parents were my parents, not my friends. We were spanked, shouted at, and punished — we even had a naughty step and went to a boarding school. I never felt understood or listened to. I spent much of my childhood rebelling and doing whatever I could to be the exact opposite of my parents (which is actually what most children do when their parents aren't effective communicators). I craved acceptance and individuality but didn't receive those things from my parents. But I vowed to be the total opposite of them and have spent my entire adult life seeking and learning how to do better, especially for my own kids. I have never punished my children. They've never been shamed, shouted at, talked down to, or suppressed. I ask them questions and nurture their individuality. I teach them how to seek answers for themselves. And most importantly? I accept them for who they are, and they know and feel that every single day. If every parent can learn these important skills, we will witness a massive transformation in future generations. In this podcast, I will teach you exactly how to listen so your kids will talk and talk so your kids will listen. And in turn, your kids will have the healthiest, most fulfilling relationships at every level. Listen closely as I share the following strategies (and examples) that you can implement immediately in all of your relationships. But know this: it's not enough for you to simply listen and read these strategies. You must actively apply them in your life every chance you get. Strategies to have a better relationship with your kids: Use “It seems/sounds like…” questions to establish what they want. Ask “why” questions. Ask, “What would be the downside if you didn't get it?” (this identifies the REAL problem) Ask, “Why do you need it to be that way?” (this establishes the emotional attachment) I really hope you enjoy this episode! In this episode, Jerry Bradshaw discusses: The power of just showing up and investing in the outcome with a manageable solution strategy. Book references for being a better K9 entrepreneur. What it means to be effective in your life and business. Planning for the future and investing in yourself and diversifying your business. Reflecting on life and doing the best that we can with our decisions. Key Takeaways: Do a little something every single day towards your goal and watch that success breed upon itself. You are not a victim and at the mercy of the society in which you live. You are capable of high achievement if you are proactive, and not reactive. Listen to understand. It is okay for you to be quiet and not just be waiting to make your point. Pay attention to what you are doing with your money and assets. Is it working for you or is it working against you? Take calculated risks and be willing to fail then learn from that failure. If you don’t take any risks, you will never succeed. "I don't understand why anybody who's in the dog training space, doesn't do competition. Some of the best trainers that I know are in competitions. Because it teaches you how to bounce back from failures, it teaches you that sometimes you have to find five different ways to try and get your dog to do something, until you find the one way that really sticks." — Jerry Bradshaw Get Jerry's book Controlled Aggression on Amazon.com Book References: The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven R. Guest Paige Niedringhaus has been a developer full time for 3 years, and today she is here to talk about Node 12. One of the things she is most excited about is the ES6 support that is now available, so things that used to require React, Angular, or Vue can now be done in Node. The require function will not have to be used in Node 12. AJ is worried about some of these changes and expresses his concerns. Paige assures him that in the beginning you won’t have to switch things to imports. You may have to change file extensions/types so Node can pick up what it’s supposed to be using. They are also trying to make it compatible with CommonJS. Node 12 also boasts an improved startup time. The panel discusses what specifically this means. They talk about the code cache and how Node caches the built in libraries that it comes prepackaged with. The V8 engine is also getting many performance enhancements. Paige talks about the shift from promises to async. In Node 12, async functions will actually be faster than promises. They discuss some of the difficulties they’ve had in the past with Async08, and especially callbacks. Another feature of Node 12 is better security. The transcripted security layer (TLS), which is how Node handles encrypted strains of communication, is upgrading to 1.3. The protocol is simpler to implement, quicker to negotiate sessions between the applications, provides increased end user privacy, and reduces request time. Overall, this means less latency for everybody. 1.3 also gets rid of the edge cases that caused TLS to be way far slower than it needed to be. The conversation turns to properly configuring default heap limits to prevent an ‘out of memory’ error. Configuring heap limits is something necessary when constructing an incredibly large object or array of objects. Node 12 also offers formatted diagnostic summaries, which can include information on total memory, used memory, memory limits, and environment lags. It can report on uncaught exceptions and fatal errors. Overall, Node 12 is trying to help with the debugging process. They talk about the different parsers available and how issues with key pairing in Node have been solved. Paige talks about using worker threads in Node 12. Worker threads are really beneficial for CPU intensive JavaScript operations. Worker threads are there for those things that eat up all of your memory, they can alleviate the load and keep your program running efficiently while doing their own operations on the sideline, and returning to the main thread once they’ve finished their job. None of the panelists have really used worker threads, so they discuss why that is and how they might use Worker Threads in Node 12. In addition, Node 12 is making Native module creation and support easier, as well as all the different binaries a node developer would want to support. In today's episode Steve starts off by talking about the importance of having an attitude of gratitude and how our focus determines not only how we feel, but our outcomes as well. J.R. is training dragon slayers and helps the listeners to give names to their biggest fears and obstacles. He expounds upon the mythological and symbolic significance of dragons, as well as the importance of acknowledging their existence, as it is the only way we may begin to conquer them. Pray For Your Enemy | How To & Why You Should | Acts 2and42 Podcast Ep. 34 It is a very difficult thing to be mistreated or harmed by someone and not retaliate. And even more difficult, to pray for them; to sincerely pray that God forgive them. It seems like a supernatural power that only Christ possessed, but thats not true. Every time you're speaking that is a time when your guest isn’t. Your podcasts or any form of interviews get much better when you stop trying to control the interview and make it about you and just focus on the person you’re talking to. PLAN OUT YOUR IDEA With solid preparation, Dan managed to get 10,000 users in one night. That is insane. Compared to so many ideas I’ve seen with people spending years to get a thousand users. Caught up in running around doing all these different things and not using focussed effort on the most important areas to get the most leverage. This is definitely a great example of the 80/20 rule and focusing on what matters. FOCUS ON A NICHE Dan’s podcast is highly focused on just Great Business Leaders with a crazy amount of experience. He releases 16 episodes a year and in 2 years already had over a million listens, and I'm sure this year it’s going stratospheric. When you focus on just a quality niche it’s much easier to grow what you do and can take a lot less effort. It a sad truth that I am just too interested in too many things to nail myself down to one concept for the podcast and love being available to talk to any fascinating human. But, I’m definitely changing tactics to become a seasonal podcast where I go deep on one niche at a time and really make high-quality content for one field at a time. David is the owner and CEO of ABC Packaging Direct and you can find more about his company's products at: https://www.standuppouches.net/blog/author/david-marinac David and I talk about marketing, sales and motivation in the modern age. David is an extremely positive guy who has a lot of great information to share about finding success in life and in business. Books mentioned: David during the show recommended the book "Psychocybernetics" and I’m re-listening to the audio version. The book isn't about cyborgs it's instead about practical ways we can use the mental machinery we have to live better lives. Dr. Maltz the creator of psychocybernetics writes about how your self image really determines your actions and only by changing how you view yourself will you be able to change your life. I highly recommend the book. https://www.amazon.com/New-Psycho-Cybernetics-Maxwell-Maltz/dp/0735202850 The book I mentioned and also found extremely valuable is Dr. Jordan Peterson’s book: https://www.amazon.com/12-Rules-Life-Antidote-Chaos/dp/0345816021 Correction: During the podcast I mentioned the Book “Self Help” and the author was Samuel Smiles and it was written in 1859. You can read it here for free. It is one of the original self help books and like David spoke about during our conversation the old ideas are making a come back. http://files.libertyfund.org/files/297/Smiles_0379.pdf Darryl Bosshardt with Redmond RealSalt was on Episode 20 of the podcast and he is who recommend David for the show. Episode Description: Welcome to another episode of The Disruptive Entrepreneur Podcast! In this episode, Rob interviews the author of the best-selling book, 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, clinical psychologist Jordan Peters. Rob and Jordan cover predictors for entrepreneurial success, the importance of dynamic opposition in a business partnership, and just how crucial marketing and sales skills really are, even for creative artists. Together, Rob and Jordan break down the necessary evils of proper scheduling, the benefits of selling directly to consumers, and why you should always have someone around to say no. Key Takeaways: When analyzing potential business success, Jordan breaks things down into these categories: -Simple jobs: Where you train and then repeat what you've learned. Intelligence predicts how fast someone can learn a simple job but their levels of conscientiousness predict how well they will do it. -Complex jobs: Involve demands that change on a regular basis and cannot ever be fully “learned.” According to Jordan, IQ is the main predictor of success in a complex job. Jordan then breaks things down further into two very different business temperaments: -Managerial and administrative: Conservative, skeptical, organized, risk-averse, who are much more likely to say “no.” -Entrepreneurial: Liberal, excited, creative, lateral-thinking, risk-takers who are trait-open. Jordan explains that one is not inherently better than the other, but that both of these types of people need each other in order to operate a successful business. Creativity, inspiration, and energy are crucial elements but that creativity needs to be organized and focused. Rob agrees and points out that, “Entrepreneurs tend to hire versions of themselves at first, instead of being more self-aware and like, ‘I'm chaotic and disruptive and what I need is order.'” But he also emphasizes not going too far in the other direction and getting held back by a stifling managerial influence. Rob and Jordan then transition to the importance of knowing how to properly sell a product and understanding that making a good product is only the beginning of a very long road. The assumption that a good product will sell itself is just not true. However, Jordan warns that trying to sell your product through a big company instead also has drawbacks, mainly that they are naturally risk-averse, move very slowly, and may never even happen at all. Instead, Rob advocates for selling directly to consumers because: -You're always at the decisionmaker -You get near-immediate feedback -It can be more rewarding knowing your product will change an individual's life Jordan agrees with this but also says that if you're selling directly then you absolutely have to understand how essential sales and marketing are. Jordan continues on saying that the artists and creatives who have contempt for the “business end” of things are only going to hurt themselves and never see any proper monetization from their creative works. Rob's solution for people who struggle with marketing and sales? Find someone who can: “To anyone listening who isn't really a natural sales or marketing person, partner or align with someone who is and you'll probably make a great team.” From there Rob and Jordan agree that dynamic opposition makes for good business balance, someone who's there to dream big and take risks and someone who can be conscientious and know when to say “no.” Having too many people with either personality in one company is never going to end well. They briefly switch to the value of structure and being held to a schedule, and if you can't be held to a schedule, finding someone who CAN hold you accountable to it. In short, in order to give your business the best opportunity for success, have people whose strengths and weaknesses complement each other. Managerial, conservative types may feel constraining, but often that constraint can hold you back from making mistakes and provide protection. Best Moments: Rob: “Your downfall is likely to be organizational administrative ability. So it's often useful for entrepreneurial types to pair themselves with administrative types.” Jordan: “Most new ideas are stupid, dangerous, and counterproductive.” Rob: “And they're the ones that change the world!” Jordan: “If you're a naive entrepreneur, you think ‘well, all I have to do is make a great product.' No, that's about five percent of it!” Jordan: “It's really, really hard to be a good salesperson. And people like that are unbelievably rare and unbelievably valuable.” Rob: “Discipline, while it's hard, it's rewarding at the end when you feel that sense of deep happiness when you've gone through it.” Valuable Resources: https://robmoore.com/ https://robmoore.com/podcast/ The Money Podcast - https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-money-podcast/id1358672174?mt=2 Money: Know More, Make More, Give More - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Money-Know-More-Make-Give/dp/1473641322/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1530197747&sr=1-1&refnements=p_27%3ARob+Moore Jordan's book: 12 Rules for Life - https://www.amazon.com/12-Rules-Life-Antidote-Chaos/dp/0345816021 Jordan's site for personality evaluations for better personal success - https://www.understandmyself.com/ About the Host: Rob Moore is the host of the UK's no. 1 business podcast “The Disruptive Entrepreneur,” as well as an entrepreneur, property investor, property educator, and holder of 3 world records for public speaking. In this edition of the Leader, Manager Coach Podcast Rob discusses 4 key points to success highlighted by prolific author and writer for the Times paper, Matthew Syed. Rob explains how to Re-Define Failure and how to dismiss the word failure from your vocabulary, and begin viewing failure as simply a stepping stone on the journey to success. Learn to bring on the challenges, in order to breed growth and become a stronger and more resilient individual. Rob talks about the need to fail fast, and that the individuals who get success quicker don't fear failure, they embrace it and move forward. It becomes a learning process. Understand how to Embrace Passionate Purposeful Practice in order to stretch the boundaries of what you do to grow, learn the value in the Creation of a Safe Environment, and why you will be much more likely to push yourself and share, but also to beware of the Comfort Zone and avoid complacency, as it will have a negative and detrimental effect on your success. Rob rounds off the episode by sharing his learnings from Jordan Peterson and his way of re-defining the world and why simply telling the truth is a difficult and profound thing and how to analyse your life and start to tell the truth. Why it's important to know what it is you want and to deal with the consequences no matter what, and as a result you'll end up at a much better place. You're listening to the Stoic Solutions Podcast - practical wisdom for everyday life. Although Jordan Peterson does not consider himself a Stoic or mention Stoicism as an inspiration, there are many parallels between messages from Stoic thinkers and Jordan Peterson relating to getting one's life in order; prevailing amidst suffering; capacity for people to strive towards the good; and questioning public opinion. I also talk about dissimilarities between Jordan Peterson and Stoic Philosophy focusing on his treatment of individuals and groups he disagrees with namely men going their own way (MGTOW) who he dubbed "pathetic weasels." Ideas, too, concerning dominance hierarchies, a focus of Peterson's work, are absent from Stoic texts. Surely, fans of Jordan Peterson's work and even Peterson himself could benefit from study and application of Stoic Philosophy.
