Born in London Canada in 1949, Jim Chapman has been blessed with a life full of challenge and adventure. He was signed to Columbia Records in New York in 1968, played bass in rockabilly legend Ronnie Hawkins' band and toured across the eastern U.S. and Canada for years fronting several groups of his own. By 1973 he was the president of a major recording studio (Springfield Sound) where he honed his skills as a songwriter, studio musician and producer. He was also a partner in a successful artist's management company, the owner of a full-service advertising and promotion company, and the founder of London's first successful musical jingle production company. Health issues forced him to retire from the business world in 1980 and with his new wife Carlyn he went back on the road as an entertainer for much of the decade. The couple later returned to London, built another recording studio, and ran a profitable radio/TV musical jingle company and communications consultancy with clients like Kraft General Foods, Ontario Hydro, ParticipAction, The Ontario Senior Games, The Government of Canada, The Detroit Tigers' London farm team, and many others. From 1992 until 2012 Jim was a prominent London-based public affairs newspaper and magazine columnist and radio/TV broadcaster. Prior to his retirement in 2017, Jim had also been working as a professional writer and business consultant for more than a decade. In 1999 he died of a massive heart attack and had what is often referred to as a Near Death Experience Brought back to life in the ER, after a long recovery he wrote two books about the experience and lectured about it across Ontario and as far afield as New York, Dallas, and Seattle. He also appeared on the ABC, CTV, TVO, and Discovery television networks, on the BBC and CBC radio networks, and on dozens of radio stations and podcasts. In the early 2000s he also returned (from time to time) to his first love, performing as a singer and instrumentalist, headlining a number of concerts as well as performing in several bands. In 2023 he created “The Jim Chapman Show”, a live songs and stories performance geared to Baby Boomers. It was an almost instant success, and Jim has performed it at dozens of venues including concert halls, banquets, churches, private gatherings and Seniors' Homes, with engagements booked into 2025. In 2024 Jim put together a weekly musical show at London's Unity Centre, and it continues to entertain audiences with performances by top London-area musicians every Wednesday evening. He has released three albums of original songs and his ninth and latest published book, “Battle Of the Bands” is a combination history of London's music scene in the 50s and 60s and his own sixty-year musical career. Jim's books and CDs are available through The Bookstore, elsewhere on this website. Jim and Carlyn Chapman have been happily married for 45 years and they share their cosy retirement home with two loveable little dogs, Jo-Jo and Molly, and an elderly gentleman cat named Mr. Punkin. www.jimchapman.caBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.

Greg Brady and the panel of: Steve Paikin Author and Broadcaster, host of TVO's ‘The Agenda' Chloe Brown, policy analyst and former Toronto mayoral candidate. Discuss: 1. Regardless of polls all over the map, and the challenges afoot - I think two things are clear about the upcoming federal election. It is a TRUE heavyweight fight...we all think the "next" election is a critical one in turning the country's sails in a certain direction - but this is going to generate a ton of interest, eclipse voter apathy and indifference, and we probably will all be sick of the slogans, the platforms, and the mud-wrestling. Yes? Huge interest? Especially in stark contrast to the recent provincial election? 2. It's a bit inside - but the first two appointments by Mark Carney.....old-school Liberal cabinet ministers who fell well out of favour in controversial circumstances in the Trudeau era - Marco Mendicino as Chief of Staff to Carney, and David Lametti, the Justice Minister who had some embarrassing secret texts revealed in the Freedom Convoy/Emergencies Act era when the Inquiry happened regarding government direction. Like, right away - not sure you're telling Canada...you're moving along and so many lessons have been learned! 3. OIivia Chow did not attend the scene of the shooting in Scarborough this weekend.....I know, I know - we spend a lot of time on where she is, what she goes to, and how she explains it away afterwards - her myriad of explanations for snubbing the October 7th vigil were......not awesome - what about this one? 4. We need more public bathrooms AND garbage bins in Toronto - this gets us on the road to one of the two, does it not??? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Greg Brady and the panel of: Steve Paikin Author and Broadcaster, host of TVO's ‘The Agenda' Chloe Brown, policy analyst and former Toronto mayoral candidate. Discuss: 1. Tariffs - this isn't temporary, this just feels like our world the next 3 1/2 years, isn't it? 2. Does this feel like a permanent break with Canada/USA as friends/allies - it's very surreal 3-THEN...Toronto having a media moment for their BMO Field stadium expansion and a reminder - we're sharing the World Cup w/ the USA and Mexico, AND spending $146M of tax dollars on temporary seating for the stadium. 4 - Are we at the point where raising chickens for eggs in the city is no longer strange but a good idea? Greg Brady and the panel of: Steve Paikin Author and Broadcaster, host of TVO's ‘The Agenda' Chloe Brown, policy analyst and former Toronto mayoral candidate. Discuss: 1) Any thoughts from French language debate.....some scrutiny for Carney and Freeland but this was also a VERY friendly debate, a debate amongst "family" as Chrystia Freeland described it! All just playing nice w/ Carney? Is his French concerning? 2) Have we just shoved tariffs to the side? Aren't we going right into the abyss next week w/ the same threats President Trump thundered about at the end of January? 3) Olivia Chow - full credit, critical of snow contracts and the mobilization of clearing sidewalks. NOW.....I like that she's doing that, but, she's also saying now cars need to be towed and ticketed if in the wrong spot, and last week - she was less interested in this. We hear your reaction to Monday's Ontario leaders debate in Toronto and hear from frequent debate moderator and co-host of TVO's The Agenda, Steve Paikin.
The documentary Russians at War shows the invasion of Ukraine from the point of view of Moscow's troops. The doc was supposed to screen during the Toronto International Film Festival, but organisers cancelled a screening amid protests and over threats to festival operations and public safety.A large part of the film's funding came through TVO, Ontario's public broadcaster. The filmmaker is a Russian-Canadian, Anastasia Trofimova, who once worked for Russian state-funded broadcaster RT. Trofimova made the film while living with front-line Russian troops for seven months. How exactly did she do that? Not without the consent of the Russian army, one would assume. We are told again and again that Russia controls one of the most sophisticated misinformation, disinformation, propaganda machines the world has ever known. Russia is in our algorithms, spreading fake news and skewing our elections. So, clearly, this Anastasia Trofimova is not somebody who we should be handing large sums of Canadian public money to so that she can tell us a story of sympathy for Russian troops. But what actually happened here? Is this a story about Russian propaganda or is it really a tale of Canadian censorship? Those questions are tackled when Jesse sits down with the producers of Russians at War and its director, filmmaker and journalist, Anastasia Trofimova.Host: Jesse BrownCredits: Tristan Capacchione (Audio Editor and Technical Producer), Bruce Thorson (Senior Producer), max collins (Director of Audio), Jesse Brown (Editor and Publisher)Guests: Cornelia Principe, Sean Farnel, Anastasia TrofimovaFact checking by Sam KonnertFurther reading:Statement regarding TIFF's decision to screen Russian propaganda — Ukrainian Canadian CongressTIFF suspends screening of film on Russian soldiers after threats — CBCTIFF turfs controversial documentary — CBC, Metro MorningSponsors: Squarespace : Check out https://squarespace.com/canadaland for a free trial, and when you're ready to launch use code canadaland to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain.BetterHelp: Visit https://betterhelp.com/canadaland today to get 10% off your first month.Public Service Alliance of Canada: Take action at https://remoteworks.ca today to support a future of work that benefits everyone. RuFF (Latitude 46 Publishing, 2024) is Rod Carley's highly-anticipated fourth novel. This historical fiction transports us to Elizabethan England, where we witness Shakespeare struggling through a midlife crisis while trying to win a national play competition to secure the King's business. Hilarious hijinks ensue, with whip-smart dialogue and a captivating tale that touches on salient social issues that persist today, including equality, justice, and censorship. Humour and incisive wit combine to create a compulsively readable and thought-provoking novel from this Leacock Award long-listed author. We know RuFF will be a favourite book of the year for many. More About RuFF: Rod Carley is back with another theatrical odyssey packed with an unforgettable cast of Elizabethan eccentrics. It's a madcap world more modern than tomorrow where gender is what a person makes of it (no matter the story beneath their petticoats or tights). Will Shakespeare is having a very bad year. Suffering from a mid-life crisis, a plague outbreak, and the death of the ancient Queen, Will's mettle is put to the test when the new King puts his witch-burning hobby aside to announce a national play competition that will determine which theatre company will secure his favour and remain in business. As he struggles to write a Scottish supernatural thriller, Will faces one ruff and puffy obstacle after another including a young rival punk poet and his activist-wife fighting for equality and a woman's right to tread the boards. Will and his band of misfits must ensure not only their own survival, but that of England as well.
